ok im thint bad of king about switching to the g2x form my vibe and i was wondering is it really that bad of a phone. i keep reading all of these complaints and im wondering should i make the jump
Don't listen to what other people say. The phone is great, as long as it doesn't shutdown by itself. Screen bleed isn't as bad as people say. It's not noticeable with normal use... Only on a black background with Maximum Brightness, and in a dark room. It's blazing fast. Update baseband makes GPS lock instantly. Screen looks AMAZING. Build quality is really good as well. Don't forget that it runs stock Android... So development on this phone is great. Install any rooted 2.3.3 OTA ROM, or CyanogenMod 7.1 Nightly, and you're good to go.

As always, test one out in the store if you can. You might get a slightly different experience at home, though.
Just like there's plenty of phones with some problems, there's plenty of working ones as well.

I think this statement says a lot. To say a phone is great when it's not malfunctioning says a lot about the phone. If I were the OP I would not take that as a vote of confidence. That being said, OP don't buy the G2X, it's fine I suppose if you're someone unfortunate to have already purchased it and can't get out of it, but I would hardly suggest jumping on board with it at this juncture. My advice is to just be patient and wait for the Hercules or Nexus Prime. The G2X is an unstable phone that reboots itself and freezes randomly. Why jump onto a sinking ship? There are better options just over the horizon, wait for those.

Neither do I. The only problems I have are a useless FFC, glitchy A2DP, and an uncertain future.
Still... someone who comes here asking for advice and reassurance before purchasing a G2x is well served by strong words of caution. This is the unfortunate truth.
Awesome phone. I've gotten good ones and bad ones... In my experience there were more good then bad..once you get a good one, then in my opinion everything else sucks (that's available now in us.).
Don't listen to others saying no. I sold a vibrant for this and couldn't be happier. Even having gotten a bad few, I still love this device..
Just imagine every g2x line all the good ones.. I think it would be hard to beat.

So the OP will have to buy a phone based on chance...?
Honestly, I've exchanged my phone once already (the only reason my first one went back is because I thought it had a faulty GPS...turns out they all do!) and I really don't want to be bothered calling T-Mobile every two days until I'm on my nth replacement to get one that actually works.
To the OP, honestly I think ever phone will have its own problems so you just gotta look at the forums to see which ones you can live with.
People's biggest complains with this phone is that:
It restarts randomly (FroYo and Gingerbread).
Has a screen bleed (although better in GB).
The GPS doesn't function the way it should (mostly people complaining from a bad lock on, I personally can't get it to stay locked on for an extended period of time, with RunKeeper it looks like I'm a drunk and spiking up to mountains and running over lakes).
EDIT: And the most annoying thing that happens to me since the GB update: slow downs into oblivion. The phone will become unusable at random times for a good 10 minutes, or until a battery pull (because I'm not able to shut it down since it is unresponsive)
Then there are some that don't experience any of this...
I say take everything people say with a grain of salt. Obviously people make rash comments that stem from their emotional instability. That being said. I recently purchased the G2x, after hearing a lot of complaining about it. YOu must realize, one is much more likely to go out of his way to make known a complaint, than a praise. Human nature I suppose.
The G2x I got, 2.3.3 July baseband, is flawless. It is an amazing phone. No restarts, no bleed, instant GPS lock.
Im not stating that there are bad phones out there, and I empathize with those that may have recieved a few, but let the first impressions go, and realize that they are not ALL bad.
Dude this phone is beast I had mind since launch and it works great everyday, u will be very happy, to the people still having trouble with there phones take it back get a new one and if its past the 14 days send it to LG u have a year

Bud u need a new phone man, slow? This phone is still super fast after not rebooting for 3 days and GPS is almost instant everytime man
From what I've noticed this phone will give you what yuu put in to it. Like a car. To me with a lil tweaking n upgrades its better n faster than my girls nexus s. And im still on the old baseband.....feel like I bought a charger sxt n put a srt8 engine in it....the only complain I gave is my 4g....I use so much data that im always getting slowed down...like I said just like a car...llz

I dont see how someone can suggest buying a phone that with a few exchanges you might end up with a good one. That makes no sense. My G1 out the box worked, my Mytouch out the box worked, my Nexus One out the box worked, my mytouch 4g out the box worked, hell my HD2 running Android works better than my G2X, and yes, I have tried several.
Dont get me wrong as I must say WHEN my G2X is running right its balls to the walls fast. I think its probably the fastest Android phone available...as long as I dont need GPS or the phone hasnt shut its self off (if I could be so lucky as to have mine reboot) its not bad, not bad at all. Unfortunately I need my GPS, I am a truck driver and rely on my GPS.
I think honestly its an issue with dual cores right now, I would wait for a bit like others have said and pick up something a bit later. Perhaps even wait for ICS since I believe that will be more optimized for dual and quads.
Its your gamble. If you dont mind possibly sending it back, trying out another one with the clear understanding that its a crap shoot at best if its going to work or not go for it. Me personally? I would not buy it again knowing what I know now and what I have been through with this phone.

I totally agree with this. The people in this thread that are urging the OP to go out and get this phone are not being realistic. Some people don't want to keep swapping phones until they get one that doesn't malfunction. Sure the G2X is a great phone WHEN IT WORKS. The problem is those times when it IS NOT working. For people who are locked into their phone and can't leave this may be tolerable. For people who don't mind having to hack their phone for it to have any semblance of reliability may be tolerable. However, for many people that is unacceptable. I think it's best that the OP at least be made aware of the reality of the situation (the state of the G2X and other phones coming soon) and let him make his decision. My opinion is that it doesn't make sense to jump on board with a phone that may potentially have to swap and swap over and over...a phone that even T-Mobile doesn't really want to offer support for anymore. To me it makes more sense to wait since there are better devices coming out in the near future.
If you're going to leave it stock then you may have issues. If you're planning to mod it and flash alternative roms then you're going to love the phone. The hardware is amazing. LG/T-Mobile's version of the android software is buggy.

What he said is correct, stock form doesn't make the hardware justice. I have a vibrant and got my wife the g2x. The first one we got we returned due to random restarts and signal loss. Second one worked ok but returned and cancelled contract because Costco had it for half the price with accessories included. Now my wife hates me tinkering with her phones which I love to do. But after so much complaints from her about not receiving or able to make calls and phone slowing down I convinced her to let me install a custom rom. I installed eagleblood 1.05 and she hasn't complained once anymore and after setting it up and going back to my vibrant which I also run a custom rom and kernel, made my vibe seem to move slow as a turtle. And the screen just looked so much more vibrant as well. It also felt much more "comfortable" , "sturdy" in my hand than my vibrant. Bottom line is if you are lucky enough to get one that doesn't have hardware problems and you are willing to install custom roms on it, then go for it otherwise I would suggest you stick with your vibrant.

In my opinion, one in 3 or 4 of the original phones are good. I've ended up with one of the good ones after 5 tries.
As Sarni sez', this phone is a beast. Does everything I ask of it. Love the full page internet with Dolphin hd. I sold my Sensation and never looked back.
Now LG.......they just stink period.
But my G2X is awesome, everything works. I'm still on Froyo and rooted, I don't want the update.
I work for a cell phone company and very often see an issue with the xt720 where it freezes, but the lights at the bottom remain on. It can't be remedied unless you do a Battery pull.
My HD2 broke and my company has offered to let me buy the xt720 for very cheap, however I need a phone that won't constantly freeze on me.
so my question is - do the custom roms fix the freezing issue? And do the 2.2 roms help with the speed of the phone? I've read mixed reports.

My feeling is that the freezing is related to crappy sd cards. In any case, once I replaced my sd card with a faster one that problem stopped even on stock 2.1. However, some people have problems even after replacing the sd card. So, there's likely some sort of sd card compatibility issue but I don't think anyone knows how to identify which sdcards will work and which ones won't. The one motorola shipped with XT720 is awful, though.
Same here. The Milestone XT720 came with a free 8GB Class 2 micro SDCard. When I replaced it with a class 10 the problem seemed to vanish.
But I also removed lookout so it might also be the culprit. Have to check on it...

Well most all the ones shipped with it were awful, They don't send the same one, I have 3 different brands with my best one being sandisk. And I think most of the time it is class 4 but I got one class 2. You could get lucky and get a decent brand. But Mz is right it is most def. an sdcard issue. tell them to throw in a kingston and it's a deal! lol. But if you get the sandisk I think you will be ok.

But If your looking for a better replacement for your previous device, then, its better If you don't consider this as an option. I must admit that we have great developers who work like hell to give us all the current features we are enjoying. Without them this phone is nothing now. Finally its up to you. But,remember this phone cannot do all that it promised in the advertisements and is also pretty outdated

I don't know about that, I have a Nexus S now but still love my XT. It really depends on if you don't mind maintaining it by keeping up with this forum and flashing ROM's and updates. With the right ROM and the right tweaks it's a pretty darn good phone. Just my opinion, it's an issue where both sides could be right. If you are getting it real cheap and don't have the opportunity to get something better I would say go for it, and this way when the opportunity arises when you can get another, you will have this phone to play with. With CM7 on the edge of being complete I feel I might not even have needed my nexus S, but good thing I got my Nexus really cheap. But I enjoy maintaining the XT, I like flashing new things and seeing the improvements, kind of like a hobby and I am learning something.

32gb class 10 from Topram. Bought it on eBay. Have purchased from them before so I know they sell "real" cards.
What I also found is that you need to overclock this phone to get the best from it.
Get yourself "Milestone Overclock" from this forum or from the Android Market and push your phone to 1000Mhz.
I have it running like that 24/7 for almost 7 months on various ROMS even though they say to use it only on stock ROM, and I rarely have a lag problem. If you leave it on stock CPU settings it can get a bit frustrating!

I have a doubt, since Google acquired Motorola, Is there any change of the boot-loader being unlocked. If so, does it mean we can further push the limitations of this device?

The XT bootloader was slated to be unlocked sometime in the last quarter of 2011, but here we are at the beginning of that quarter and nothing new. We can only upgrade only so far based on memory and other factors. At this point, I think that the CM7 builds are about as far as this phone can go. But hey, that is way better than the 2.1 that it was only given by the manufacturer.

Happened a few months ago, but I am pretty sure it isn't the whole Motorola company but just a piece of it. Can't remember exactly but there is a thread on it somewhere in here.

No, we've never been slated for an unlock. The conditions Motorola gave for unlocks are (1) carrier allows and (2) part of a regular update. We're never getting any updates.
Matt and Mark of Motorola support forums confirmed that XT720 isn't even on the table for unlocks (they've deleted their getsatisfaction so that thread is toast).

yes, still using the original SD 8GB class 6 that came with the phone
and yes that card is very crappy, a few friends of mine we all got the phone the exact same day
both of them had their 8GB died on them
just replace it with a good 16GB or larger if you can afford it
Hey guys,
So, I own a Galaxy Ace, which is pretty outdated (but actually a few months newer than Nexus S).
What I mean is that it's quite slow with JB AOKP, and doesn't run it properly (no camera and no video codecs so far).
So, considering that Nexus S is still getting google updates for Android and that it seems like a very nice phone, and that it's cheap, should I sell my Galaxy Ace and get a Nexus S?

I've had a Nexus S since it was released and as much as I love it, I think the hardware is starting to get a little dated. Unless it's an extremely good price, I wouldn't spend the money to get one.

Thanks. I've been reading here about how slow JB some people get. Even, I think we can say that it's a top device with a decent screen. After NS, all I see are phones/tablets, which doesn't look good to me at all. Bigger screens than 4" is a deal breaker for me.

I'd say buy the NS! I've also had it since release and running JB now. For me it runs smoother than every before. Compared to the Ace you'll be very surprised!
Though if you have a bit more money to spare, wait for the new nexus phones and see if a 4" or 4.3" turns up.

Hahaha awesome! welcome to the nexus community! Are you going to do any hacking on the phone? If not, did you perform a factory reset? if so, try refreshing the "update" section, maybe it'll pop up.

Thanks! About hacking, you know how we feel about new phones.. sad about taking their virginity. I got rid of my Ace because I want a phone that saves me more time than what I spend making it work properly. So I'll stick with ICS for now, and wait the JB OTA to pop up. Tried the update section, but not a factory reset. Do you think that the factory reset could make the update show up?

This is a known trick to push the OTA. Pull the SIM card out and have a strong WIFI signal. Open the Settings application. Select Apps. Select the All drawer, and select Google Service Frameworks. Force Stop the application, then Clear Data. Now check for an update. Select About Phone in Settings, and select System Update. It will have something like 1969.
If nothing then repeat all the steps above.
Oh and root that Nexus S...it begs for it :good:

Also, could the performance/battery life get better just from a single root? I'd need scripts like adrenaline engine or v6 supercharger, right?

This trick does not influence anything.
Just rooting won't give you any performance. Also there are some discussions going about these scripts. I'm not a big fan. I just flashed a different rom with different kernel.

Like Kwibis said it doesn't effect anything if you do it this way. Pull SIM and turn on wifi. Go close to the wireless router for a solid link.
"Some discussions" lol They are heated to say the least...the creator of V6 Supercharger..Zeppelinrox, believes whole heartedly that it works and thousands of others will back him. Thousands of others say placebo...you have to decide for yourself. I'm torn since he's a fellow Canadian...lol. I've used it but that was a long time a go..
Rooting may or may not improve your phone. Depends on the ROM and Kernel chosen and every phone is different so there is no "Best ROM/Kernel" combo...I hate that question...lol.
Read up and if you choose to root do it the right way and learn ADB (Android Debug Bridge) using Android SDK. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782 Old thread but still works, just get the newer recovery and superuser. DON'T use a one click because you will learn nothing so when you ef something up you'll annoy people by starting a thread for a problem you should know how to solve. Oh and unlocking your phone wipes everything so backup your music, pics, etc.

About OTA update, I just thought that there might be a reason why my phone didn't get it yet. If it was my old Ace, I would have done it the first time I read, but everything just works so great, that I don't want to mess up and then have to get into rom, kernel and scripts choosing again. About rooting, I misunderstood up there, the simple act of rooting it obviously wouldn't improve performance at all. But again, everything works so great that I'm even afraid of pushing OTA hahaha.
Boy, this GPS locks FAST. Indoors with windows closed. I still can't believe this. This would never (ever ever) happen with Ace, no matter how best your path for gps fix was. With stock config, well, sometimes you can't even get signal outdoors with the cleanest skies.
Anyway, will try the OTA trick (I miss my messed up JB on Ace).

Tried the steps 4 times. Nothing happened. I saw the "Last checked in ..../1969", but it didn't find any new updates.
I guess ICS is ok too.
Lol check your date and clock. Are they set right?
Rooting is that you get superuser access so you can perform actions that normally wouldn't be possible like backing up apps and data.

I'd suggest to buy the Galaxy Nexus instead of a NS. I have compared the two phones side by side and the GS just feels faster, sleeker and more responsive. I should add that I chose a Nexus device specifficaly because of the multitude of roms that were (are) available for it.
One thing I dislike in GS is the enormous screen. It just feels like an overkill for me. I'm content with the size NS provides.
One thing I dislike in NS is the touchscreen buttons order - I have amended that through remapping the buttons. For example the "menu" button is my "home" button. If you are left handed you should be fine and maybe you will not need to tinker with this.

finally got root on my zenpad s 8. i can't say how this'll affect updates in the future, but this is done after taking the first update out of the box as of 7-19-15.

download the latest chainfire su: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip and copy to your device or sd card
make sure your android sdk is up-to-date.
if you happened to already install the device and the usb adb device has the yellow warning on it, just updated the device driver after installing the intel drivers. select brows my computer... let me pick... scroll down to intel and select adb device.
next verify that adb recognizes your device -> adb devices
unzip IntelAndroid-FBRL-05-16-2015-PTR and run launcher.bat
if your device is detected select T2 and press enter.
wait a good while as it reboots into recovery. you'll see an error on the launcher bat about failing b/c of too many links or something, just ignore. you device will restart and have a buncha lines of text. after about 3-5min it'll boot into CWM. install su zip and reboot (didn't need to fix su at the propt).
you may want to do a nandroid before flashing SU. i skipped it so i can't say whether it'll be successful or not, but it's better to be i case something goes wrong. i'm still w/in my return period
there you go. enjoy an adfree device or what ever you want to do with your rooted tablet!

Mine is now stuck on spinning in the boot. It wont start up
try booting back into recovery and running the script again - the launcher.bat . did you follow the instructions exactly? you should have booted to a tethered cwm where you flash root from. if you boot back into cwm reflash root. I'm assuming you allowed cwm to fix root. I skipped that step.
I believe you can get into recovery by holding vol down while booting up.

- Sweet relief. Now to debloat the hell out of this puppy!
Update - After root and debloat this thing runs like butter. I cant believe how good this is for $199. I was a bit worried about the Intel chip, but it actually runs cooler than any Snapdragon 600 or 800 I have ever used. Even when streaming video for hours.

Can I get a de-bloat list? I removed quite a bit but not sure what all is safe to remove. Its running great now, but i would love to get as much of that junk off as possible.

I haven't really gone through and tested everything to make sure its all 100% for sure good. A few hours of use with no issues at all. I just use Titanium backup and then go as follows. Freeze/Disable anything that starts with the word ASUS that you dont use. Even the Asus services (not keyboard and obvious stuff). I kept the Asus launcher though even though I use Nova because it caused issues with wallpapers when I disabled it.
then go through the list of apps and Freeze ones you dont use. A good way is to get the app "Advanced task killer free" . See what apps are running in your background. If its running and you dont use it freeze it. That should get you most of the way there. If you arent sure, just do a few at a time and see how it runs. If you broke something, unfreeze it. No harm done. I am not really done either... It's a process.
yep this thing is a steal at $200 and root makes it even better. wonder why there's so few reviews on best buy. it's been out for 3 weeks or so. I was #2 review.
4:3 is growing on me. I started digging it with my nexus 9. I doubt I'd get 4:3 for anything bigger than 9 in though.

Yup, that is good advice. You can always unfreeze, you cant always re-install. Titanium Backup full version is well worth the couple dollars.
Ugh I'm stuck between buying the 199 model or waiting for the 299 model, I mean I don't honestly need 4gb of ram nor 64gb of storage. I just want them Haha, I'd use it mostly for reading and movies really.

i'm using mine the same way so i decided to not spend another $100 for the CA version. though for taking notes and stuff should be nice on this thing. it is freaking light! those who have weaker arm strength or have to hold a tablet for extended periods may like it better than a galaxy note 8 (only slightly lighter) or 10.1. it's waaaay lighter than a surface.
i can notice when a tablet i heavier than another one, but i don't complain like so many people seem to over a few ounces since the weight differences are sometimes just the weight of pencil or burger... i've never struggled holding a friggin pencil! but this thing is like holding nothing. it's amazing how much battery life and performance you can get in it.

Buy the Cheaper one now and if you need more, but the other one later.
I am with madsquabbles on this though. I have a high end PC and a high end smartphone for mobile... I really dont do anything heavy on a tablet, just browse web, imgur, email and occasional streaming and a few apps. Any decent tablet will do the job.
I didn't think of it that way, I also have desktop and high end mobile, probably grab one Today!

Yup, save that $100 for your next phone
I got one as a spur of the moment decision. I am Canadian and I happen to be vacationing in New York. I walked into the best buy in Albany and they happen to have one on display. The screen really wowed me and its colors and contrast and I couldn't believe how late it was. I thought it would be nice to have a smaller tablet in this form factor. Overall so far I have really enjoyed it the only tiny issue I have with it is it the bottom right third of the device has a small creek on it sometimes when I first pick it up but after holding it for a while it will not make the noise anymore. It is a small issue and I can certainly live with it as it would be too difficult for me to bring back to return in the United States. Additionally I happen to get lucky and have one of the first LCD screen tablet I have never bought that did not have any light B bleed whatsoever. Even the iPads I have thought in the past have had at least one return before getting one that was satisfactory in that regard.

Furthermore I certainly hope that this device gets its own forum as now that there is a routing option and I see these and phones have custom ROMs it should only be a matter of time that there is a demand for development on this it expensive yet really beautiful tablet

I bought the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 on sale for the same price as the Asus and I'll be taking the Galaxy back. They're pretty comparable devices but all things being equal I prefer the Asus. The Galaxy does have the luxury of having a developer community already but now that it's eol they'll be moving on. Hopefully some will hop to this device!

When I'm watching movies the screen looks like it's adjusting the brightness. I don't have the brightness set to auto. Anyone else having this problem.? I've gone thru all the settings, can't figure it out. That's the only gripe I have with the tablet. Any help would be awesome.

I haven't had to root anything since the Evo 4g I used to have and its been shoved in a backpack with an extended battery for the past 2 years. I had several G1's, several old school Nexus devices and 3 or 4 Captivates. Couple of HTC devices thron in for good measure too.
I work for AppleCare and have had an iphone for the past 3 years but its gotten to the point where they are basically, blah. Just...nothing special about them. Long story short, i traded a 6 plus for my new S7 and couldn't be happier.
Questions: How afr out of the loop am I? I've used Odin but it was new when I stopped flashing.
-Is there anyting to gain from flashing/rooting besides debloating?? That was the main reason several years ago, that and trying to OC the processors. Hell, with quad cores and 4 gigs, who needs to OC anymore?? lol
Anyway, hope that makes sense and I look forward to being an active member once again.

First off let me say welcome back to the awesome side
As to what you're missing, it really depends on what you need from your device. While most of the features you'd need root to obtain are now a part of stock android, there are still a few things missing like ad blocking, or an awesome sound mod like v4a. And even then, some root apps/mods don't play nicely with Touchwiz.
My advice is to browse though the s7 forums and see if anything entices you that's worth rooting for.

its good to be back. mt wife still has her 6 plus but she's swapping it tomorrow for an s8. shes hella excited.
i remember tethering being a huge driver for rooting becuase carriers didnt see the usage. I have 14 gigs of hot spot that doesn't use my actual cell data so i don't guess i need to root. lol
I would love get all the crap off and go vanilla Nougat but i doubt its possible at this time. Thats about all i would want. pure google.

I believe the s7 forums have a decent amount of stable AOSP ROMs. I've not been over there in a while but you can take a look.
Vanilla android is very possible to obtain. But you might need to get your hands a bit dirty. As you're probably aware how tightly Samsung has been locking down "their" devices as of late.

oh yea. I've kept up with all the news about locking bootloaders and what not. wish they would just put vanilla on them and just sell the phone for what it is, a phone. i don't mind getting dirty to be honest.
i remember when the capivates first came out they were supposed to be unbrickable. come to find out, they could be bricked, but a guy on here made a rig with a diode in a usb csble and it unbricked it. that was some cool stuff. lol

I hear TW isn't as bad as it was once. But I guess that's subjective. I do agree with you though. And stock android would just fly on Samsung's hardware.

i honestly love this phone.
its quick, great camera, expandable storage and looks awesome. I've got a 128 gig sd card in right now but ill be picking up another card so this one can go back in my laptop.
i have never minded touchwiz but its came a long way. a long long way.
one thing i would love to do, since i tether so much, is to have a tether option on the home screen(like a little switch) instead of having to go into settings-connections-tether in order to turn it on.

I'm actually planning on getting one myself. Further down in the year though. The device is absolutely beautiful.
Most of the toggles/widgets on the playstore are dated. So they might not support newer versions of android. Especially the heavily modded TW. This app looks fairly recent though. So give it a shot
