Am I the only one thinking/hoping that we are getting Ice Cream Sandwich??? I mean it releases on October 11124 and we still don't have gingerbread you know? This is just hopeful thinking... it would be nice to have the absolute latest OS and features though

Nah... ATT is just slow.
Thumb rule: We are always a release behind
I don't mean to be pessimistic but that sounds very unlikely.
Maybe in the long run, but even that seems unlikely since new phones are coming out all the time.
Also, Samsung hasn't expressed much love for the Infuse so I doubt they would spend much time making an official ICS ROM for it.

Chances of ICS on the Infuse - extremely slim.
They're pretty good for the GSII though.

I read a lot of places, sorry i do not have the links, that once they have it, it should work with anything, just the software mods itself when it is installed on the phone/tablet/computer (if they make any). It sounds pretty out there, but it is nice to dream. If it would work, then the only updates that the phones would need from the carriers/manufacturers are the modems and kernels.
I would say yes way down the line but the sgs2 is gonna get all the love

im probably wrong, but im for sure i read somewhere saying that ICS was gunna be an operating system that was like for all android phones? what i mean is that ICS is gunna be one platform for all android phones like iOS for the iphone. idk
Who cares..., am I the only one who thinks that AAAALLLLL the OS's look the freaking Sam with a different number? Its like with my infuse when we went from froyo to "gingerbread" the only real advantage I noticed was a couple of features added, like tthe FRONT facing camera working with Skype, and other silly stuff like that. For instance, MIUI is a whole new beast on its own but speed dial option is eluding me lol
I guess I'm more or less rudely asking for a bonus feature list from ICS.

"all" in the generic sense - instead of having 2.x for phones and 3.x for tablets, 4.0 will support both phones and tablets.
However, every device that Android runs on needs customizations specific to the hardware. In many cases, those hardware drivers/libraries are closed source so it's not easy to port them unless the manufacturer does.
"all" in this case means a manufacturer can do a device bringup of 4.x on a tablet or a phone. But someone still needs to do the device bringup, and on a device with lots of closed-source proprietary bits, device bringup can be difficult if not impossible. Look at the state of CM7 for example - it didn't really get off the ground until Rogers released Gingerbread because the Froyo libraries weren't compatible with Gingerbread, and even with the Rogers proprietary bits, some things still don't work.
If it comes to the Infuse it won't be before May. Probably closer to a year from now.
The joys of fragmentation.

Patience...it's coming
Alot of people don't really understand the process of releasing an OS update for an android. From what I can gather, Google releases the OS to the manufacturers which then tailor it to the individual phones. Then they release it to the providers (AT&T, Sprint etc.) which tailor it to their network and pollute it with bloatware. When they're sure it's somewhat error free, they release it to us.
AT&T for example, is frantically trying to finish their version, but they obviously have an issue or two...or twenty...who knows. They have to finish it, compile it, then do test updates, then test the updates and pray it worked. It takes time. I am far from patient so I already installed the GB 2.3.5 leak and can honestly say it's a major improvement. Bluetooth works better, everything is faster, and those annoying lags whenever you do a level 2 memory clear or detach the USB are fixed. But the leak has its issues, so I'm giving AT&T the benefit of the doubt and waiting to see if the mid October release actually happens. But since they lied and failed to deliver in September, I'm not holding my breath.
As far as ICS is concerned, I doubt AT&T has even had a chance to look at it yet. I would be amazed if we saw it this time next year. But we will get it. LOTS of people have the Infuse so it's not going to be left out or treated like a forgotten step-child like some people claim. It's a great phone with one of the nicest, biggest displays you can get, and it runs anything you throw at it even with its single core processor. What makes the Infuse bad is forcing it to run on AT&T.

Because Samsung has yet to launch 2.2 on their own "premiere" Galaxy S line of phones.
Of course, this is my opinion.
2.2 has been released officially since May 2010.
Droid X was released July 15th, with Android 2.1
Android 2.2 was pushed OTA to Droid X on September 22, 2010
Samsung Captivate was released July 18th with Android 2.1... still no Froyo
I'm not complaining. I'm stating my opinion...
And now.. 2.3 is coming out and I think most of us would agree. If the N1 can handle 2.3, so can the Captivate, the whole Galaxy S line.
So yes.. lazy.. because now they will have to start working on a release for 2.3 and they haven't even finished a 2.2 release. You and I already know Motorola is on top of this.
Maybe lazy isn't the best choice of words.. but.. whatever. I think you get my point.
Ah, in relation to Froyo, gotcha. I agree to a certain extent.
I highly doubt we will see an official 2.3 release...

Yeah haha. I mean I'm not bashing Samsung. I'm just in fear that they might be a bit over their heads now.
They basically are going to have to stay in constant development with this.. They haven't finished 2.2 yet and now 2.3 is about to be released.
I fear that our phones will be left behind FAR before they really should be.
Idk.. I'm a pessimist a guess.

That's strange...last few time I talked with the Galaxy people at Samsung..it was told to me that 2.2 has been finished at all of the Carriers for some time..This makes this very confusing for me to say the least. Is it really Samsung at fault...or the carriers that are at fault with all of the delays of releasing the 2.2 update stateside ? Is it the us based carriers that are adding to it to be able lock the phones down and change things around on it..or Samsung ?
I can understand where folks are saying Android is fragmented if the carriers are causing this, but I don't understand why there can't be unified coding across all manufacturers lines when it comes to the os of Android. After all isn't it based off of ASOP and Linux and isn't that supposed to be all open source..? I do understand the differences in the various hardware requirements between all of the Android phones..but the core os should be the same shouldn't it ? So...who is at fault..the carriers..or Samsung..or both ? Who is really causing the delays..? Who is going to make the determination if any future development happens..the carriers or Samsung ?

ROFL. Motorola is on top of nothing. Bottom maybe with VZW on top. If not for VZW, I don't know that Motorola would EVER push out updates. Just look at what they did with the cliq/backflip/dext/cliqxt/devour... it took FOREVER, and most parts of the world aren't even officially getting it (2.1).
Probably buying HTC from now on. They get cyanogen and sense, and somewhat timely updates

Hmmm... obviously, Samsung is working on a 2.2 release. We have already gotten two leaked builds. The official release will be coming. Now with regards to 2.3. I don't think it's going to happen. It seems as though Samsung is focusing their efforts to push new products rather than support old ones.
"Old Ones?" this phone isnt even 6 months old yet and it'll be obsolete soon. if not for the geniuses here at XDA it would already be obsolete. i love my captivate but i think its getting ready to get left in the dust. hope i get proven wrong though.
Left in the dust? How so? 2.3. Is not even out yet. At least we have leaked versions of froyo...which will still be better then an official one. All we need is the source. The devs can handle the rest from there otherwise the devs spend there time unlocking all the crap that Samsung and att locked down

This is what I don't like about Android (well not Android itself, but the Android market)...while N1 owners will be playing with 2.3 I will be stuck with 2.1.
F Samsung/Motorola whoever and their heavily modified ROMS. I don't need your Touchwiz/MotoBLUR/etc...just give me the stock ROM so that you save yourself the headache of upgrading and us too.
Samsung originally released their 2.2 back in late September/October to Europe - then was promptly pulled due to it being complete junk.
Now they are re-distributing it this month with a probably still junk release of 2.2. They screwed up so bad due to all the crap they half-assed into these phones (touchwiz, rfs file system etc...)
Samsung really needs to re-evaluate their development team and decide if they are going to be serious about the software side or farm it out to a third party that can program. Because.... their development department is probably the worst out there when it comes to android development.
I mean... there are probably Kirf teams in China that can code better!
Lazy.. no, greedy and not caring about the consumer and not taking pride the end result? Sure I can go with that.

This exactly.
Android is supposed to be this huge open source project, and while we can root and mod and flash all we like, we should also have the option of just being able to go to google and get the newest version ourselves.
The fact that not only the carriers (which is to be expected) but the manufacturers feel the need to bloat up the software is frustrating and annoying!
Here we are the last week of December. Promised dates for Froyo on the captivate have come and gone and keep changing. Samsung releases a new Android platform in the Nexus S and Google has control of software releases on it. I've had my Captivate since September, I'm running a custom ROM (Cognition) and for the most part my phone works with the GPS being the only sore spot.
Has Samsung/ATT abandoned development? Will we SEE Froyo released at all?
At this point I think the idea that they've scrapped it and are moving to Gingerbread is a pipedream.
There hasn't been a leaked final Froyo yet and that is really suprising to me.
We have the hottest hardware available right now and it's bogged down by the crappy stock software and 2.1 releases are crippled because we don't have proper source code for the Devs to work from.
I'm getting frustrated and contemplating selling this phone, but I LOVE the android platform and want to stick with it.
I feel the same way but I'm gonna hold out just a little longer

Out and out, I disagree with this. A Voodoo lagfix charged Cappy (i.e RFS-fixed) merely lacks Flash from 2.2.
There is no need on the Hummingbird platform for the 2.2 JIT improvements that dramatically boosted the performance of Snapdragon based handsets.
Touchwiz/Sense/etc is merely a demon that plagued pre 2.3 devices (and we haven't seen what Carrier/Vendor bull**** is coming with 2.3 yet, I wouldn't say we're out of the woods yet) and to be honest they are all as bad as each other - particularly if they are so ingrained that you can't dump them by replacing their components without root (much less adb/full rom flash).
There is 3 problems with the Captivate platform, to be sure, imo in the order of importance.
1. RFS
2. GPS
3. AT&T/Samsung's lack of updates/source/news
Overall, I think that Froyo is being held up over GPS not being "fixed" as well as the sleeping shutdown bug, and AT&T's general ineptitude.
tahnks for cutting off what I said to make your point. STOCK SOFTWARE SUCKS. Devs' custome ROMS are good, but held back due to the lack of an official 2.2 release and source code.

It's STOCK and can't be modified without rooting therefore my point stands.
i really dont see what is wrong with the custom roms based on leaked firmware, it runs very smooth, and coming from a nexus one, there is definitely a noticeable difference.
but then again, the nexus one is almost a whole year older than the galaxy s phones, so if there is no difference, i would say they are doing it wrong.
meh.. Ive come to depend 100% on XDA for my updates.
I don't think we will ever see any official OTA updates from Att any time soon.

SAmsung reps are telling AT&T they are skipping 2.2 and just putting out 2.3. Heard it from the horse's mouth ...
Take it for whatever that is worth. I doubt Samsung USA reps have a clue anymore, but that is what they shared with AT&T.
It's a good thing we have so many awesome devs creating new ROMs that are imo much better than anything AT&T/Samsung could ever release as the official updates would still come with tons of AT&T bloatware and TouchWiz, and would most likely use the laggy RFS filesystem like JF6 and JH7.

I will be the skeptical (hater) one here.
I still will let action speak for itself.
Just remember that if this has nothing to do with development, you will have failed 100 folds with this community and further tarnish the Samsung name.
I'd rather hear Samsung is on the phone with AT$T pushing for faster updates instead.
IMO, I smell sales...
Not getting my hopes up.
If it's that official Captivate Ginberbread was coming I'd skeet skeet skeet, but if it's Official Captivate Froyo I'd just raise my eyebrow - soon enough having 2.2 is going to be like having 1.6 was last June where everyone was slowly getting 2.1 and eagerly waiting for for 2.2 while 2.3 was already on everyones tongues for the must have's for their next phone.
Seriously, after all the recent smartphone announcements I've heard in the past seven months of owning this phone it has got to be real good for me to take a second look at any Samsung device. Samsung and AT&T fooled me once with the BlackJack in 2006 and they've fooled me again with the Galaxy S in 2010, Samsung makes great latest and greatest hardware but once it's out the door it's usually DIY if you want a speedy (as in before half a year or more has passed before Samsung and AT&T decide to put it out) firmware upgrade. At this point I perceive that Samsung will probably put out 2.2 on their own for the Captivate and the other American Galaxy S models just like they did with the BlackJack. Official firmware upgradeable smartphones were a rarity then and with only select Windows Mobile phones doing it but now it's the norm, get with the times or lose your current or potential customers to HTC and Motorola!
Manufacturers/carriers really need to start giving out at least a one year up to date guarantee for updates especially if the hardware is fully capable, and the Galaxy S series has enough umph to go at least two years on the hardware side so ATT/Samsung better not pull an EOL and discontinue support right at July for this almost wonderful phone!!!
"Hey I know that your phone hasn't been updated so why don't you just buy our nexus s it will be on att in the next couple of months is running 2.3 and you should (crosses fingers) get an update for it soon after the next google firmware update. Oh and it'll only cost you about $700 or more dollars." Or is it "we will be pushing 2.2 to your phones; however you will have to pay $X for it" im sorry but I am so fed up with att and samsung. I love my captivate but that's thanks to all the devs here. But ill wait and to see what the next disappointment a big coroeration can try and serve to me on a silver platter
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The only thing, and I mean the ONLY thing that will get Samsung off of my ****-list is a lag-free, gps-working, Gingerbread ROM.
Had they delivered in November like they promised, a lag-free, gps-working, Froyo ROM would have been enough.
But the penalty for waiting until god damn March is that Froyo is no longer acceptable.
I am really hoping that this is gonna be gingerbread, I will not get my hopes up however. I hope this is for real because otherwise this is my very last Samsung phone. The only thing that I really love is the screen.

lol WOOT !!! cant wait...
i highly doubt its official gingerbread, i would scream like a girl if it was tho. kernel source maybe? or, a sort of xda - samsung exchange, in where samsung might port over the codes and allow official OTA to go over as a beta program.
very excited
I think at this point it would have to be official Gingerbread + an HSPA+ modem + greatly improved GPS to cause me to seriously reconsider complaining to AT&T until they let me upgrade to an Inspire.
Not that I have any grudge against Samsung; I love the Captivate from a raw hardware standpoint, and the screen is still incomparable (until SAMOLED+, that is), but after getting lost because of the GPS tracking issues more than once, and several close calls with random shutdowns at night culminating in having to actually drag out an old clock radio, I simply can't rely on the thing to do its job.
I can has gingerbread?
Why would Samsung need to talk to XDA before releasing an announcement? Doesn't sound like a Gingerbread announcement. Which means I'll continue to be disappointed.
That sounds right to me. Just announcing something like GB for Captivate would be a huge win for Samsung's damaged brand. Why would they share that PR spotlight with XDA?
Seems like more hype to me. I do honestly hope they prove me wrong though...

yep, I'm always thinking about what a complete waste this phone really is. Released with froyo, no dual core support drivers are crap and when/if we do ever get a fully functional gingerbread it will be at the end of its cycle and never really get its dual core support. Lg purposely gimped it with 512mb ram. A real shame. I fully expect to not ever see an official ICS release. All these dual cores being released with gingerbread ram requirements are going to be put to waste.

I honestly think 512mb of ram isn't a requirement for ICS. If that's the case then the Nexus S and Nexus One (which both have 512mb of ram) will be left in the past and I don't think Google is ready to stop yet. I foresee at least one more major update for the Nexus S (ICS) and then maybe Google will have more strict requirements. I think Google is more big on software rather than hardware. As for the G2x receiving ICS officially that will most likely not happen, especially since the G2x didn't make the expected sales LG were going for. Remember majority equals priority for these big name company's and majority don't own a G2x. Majority switched to the Sensation or whatever even exchange they can get. This will be my first and last LG phone unless the next line of Nexus is with LG (I hope its either HTC or Samsung for Super Amoled screen).

i talked to a guy today, who said he overheard someone on an airplane bound for zimbabwe, that he heard from his girlfriend in argentina that ice cream sandwhich would be out by end of sept. for the g2x. woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!
I dunno where you get your info from, but they are wrong! I was told by Santa Clause, who heard it from the Easter Bunny, who won the info in a bet with a leprechaun that was running away from a unicorn while chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, that Ice Cream Sandwich won't be available on the G2X until at least winter.
I ate an ice cream sandwich today...way better than gingerbread.
I post very rarely, cause I am a very capable leech and can use the search button. In this case I feel like the g2x isn't getting enough love. Yes, in all likelihood we will not be getting official ICS support, but we will get CM9. Even though the 2 cores wont be completely utilized, the tegra2 will probably be faster than that qualcomm SoC. Anyone I know that has moved to the sensation has stated the g2x is a faster device. Anyways, I am using a Cherry Pick cm7 nightly from... that other site, with faux's kernel and decided to give that V6 supercharger a try. It is buttery smooth, no APN problems, no BSOD, battery life under heavy use is incredible. I have used Weapon, White's Miui, EB, Axura, and CM7.1. Take your pick, they are all amazing. We have some awesome developers and I sincerely appreciate what you've done with this widely underrated handset. I will now retreat back into my hole. Might be fun just to have a thread not so negative ya know!
I know I might be jumping the ship. I'm on MIUI with faux 4.3 UV kernel and I love this phone. Everything is fast, everything works. However as far as future proof the only reason I am thinking of switching is because of the support. The dev section for the g2x is dying. We have 2 or 3 ROMS that are actually good and get updated frequently. Have you looked at the sensation dev section? There are about 8 active threads. The mytouch 4G(my old phone) is much older than this phone and still has a more active dev section. Its disappointing.

I agree. Seems as though imo lg and nvidia are the reason. I may be wrong but from what I understand the devs just have a hard time with the drivers they are provided.

Higher processor speed =/= better performance.
That's not how CPUs work.

I get it, its not as exciting. I had the g1 while it development was peaked. We still got a device that is gonna be future proof long enough to get to the kal-el powered phones. Which is when I will probably think it will be worth upgrading. Remember the software has not yet caught up to this hyper powered hardware. Most of the development so far has gone to getting the operating system to a point where they can start optimizing it. Shadow Gun doesn't even start to flex the power of this chipset. Well, that is my ignorant impression of the android situation.

I know I'm just saying but we've been able to overclock the gpu too and right now our neocore nemamark etc. scores are high as hell lol get it.... But yeah dont hate and in real world performance its silky smooth. That's what she said xD
Oh and I hope you guys get that devs support you need gl with that

I'm really grateful for the work the devs have done fixing up this phone. I hope people will be patient with them in the next few months. We don't want to lose any more devs. This handset had potential.
You people kill me. How many roms do you intend on running on your phone? You can only run one unless you have dual boot. You talk about the devs abandoning g2x or not enough development. Well what do you want to see that hasent been done? There are nightlies out everyday. Somebody must be developing something. Here's what you do, pick a rom, any rom and stick with it.

Some more roms are about to start back up. If LG is telling the truth then we will get leaked drivers soon. Btw look up the history of the HTC Droid Eris we got no support from Verizon or HTC the reason I'll never own a another HTC device this phone has updated faster with promise of more updates unlike that phone was killed before it got started

That's not a fair comparison. HTC has the best track record of updates by a LARGE margin. You're comparing the Eris... Which has very bad hardware. But look HTC's record, they updated the two year old Incredible to GB... Almost every 1ghz or higher HTC has GB. Maybe even all of them if I'm not mistaken. So as for updates, I'd go with HTC. I just dislike HTC's hardware, their phones always deal with stupid defects like different screens, eMMC issues, dust under the screen, and just abnormal build quality issues.

What makes you say that? They backpedaled a bit on the no ICS statement but only so far as to say they were still testing phones for compatibility, which basically means nothing.

Well we also have an (un)official 2.3.4 from a G2x variant working on our phones. Once we start having several different models being updated, then we'll all start having bits and pieces to play with.
This is why HTC phones typically have lots of development because they release TONS of phones and they can pull bits and pieces together to better other devices. Once LG starts pumping out more "similar" phones, we'll start to get more and more missing pieces to get it working.
If not the devs will improvise such as they did with the A2DP driver on AOSP roms.
At this point the G2x on CM7 is pretty much near perfect. Battery life seems great, everything works as it should, GPS is almost instant. I have no complaints. We also have several roms currently. Remember that not all the G2x roms are just posted here at XDA
The G2x is a sexy phone. It is still a beast and is faster then most newer phones out there today. It may even play games faster then the Galaxy Nexus... who knows. But you have to know we'll get ICS. Either from the CM team or LG or both. I'd really like to see this phone with ICS and how well it performs against the Galaxy Nexus.
The O2x/G2x/O3D are LG's flagship models. Moving forward, LG just can not NOT upgrade at least some of their phones to ICS because that would be suicide. The G2x is a little more then 6months old. I'd say that we WILL get it but might be mid-2012 because you KNOW they'll release a stock ICS phone or two before upgrading existing handsets but I would expect this from most carriers.
Also the next Android release is typically buggy the first few builds while Google fixes it. The Nexus One and Nexus S both had new versions of Android but it wasn't released to other devices until the second or third revision. The Nexus S came out this time last year and the Nexus One wasn't officially updated until late January or February. Then other phones started to follow suite once a stable version was released.
So unless Google is doing something radically different then before, the Galaxy Nexus will hold ICS to itself for several months before any other device will see it (officially). So unless you are moving to the Galaxy Nexus, no other available phone has any benefit over the G2x at this point.

keep up the great work devs....and remember children will act like children. Do not let the negative kids chase you off. Most of us appreciate the hard work.

Very well said.
You know I've never understood why "we only have 3 or so really good roms" is a bad thing. Really, what more do we need? We have CM7 for the AOSP crowd, MIUI for the iPhone lookalikers, and Weapon for stock lovers. Throw in Ultimate for 2.2 and Eaglesblood for minimalism and I really don't see what we're missing out on.
More != better.

Agreed, how often do most people change ROMs anyway? (I'm not talking about nightlies or new versions, but about swapping between say CM7 and MIUI.) I'd rather have a handful of well-developed projects than a dozen or so ones that meander along without ever really completing.
Thanks as well to the devs - loving the work!
