general questions after rooting :) - HTC Sensation

Evening all,
Looking for a bit of direction. I'm new to this all, so please do forgive my lack thereof understanding. Okay, so I rooted the phone and installed clockworkmod along with superwipe, a specific radio (was on the page + recommended ) along with android revolution hd 3.6.1.
Can someone explain to me what a ROm is? I'm assuming it's the Android Revolution HD bit I now have on my phone + overclocked processor, etc. yes? Also, I stumbled upon the forums after purchasing an Anker battery. Are ROMs specific to OE parts? IE can I run the anker battery with my phone + custom ROM with no issues? Lastly, (lol) can someone please tell me how clockworkmod works? I installed it mainly after reading various threads. I don't even understand what's it's freaking for! The clockworkdmod isn't the actual ROOT, is it? I honestly can't seem to figure out what makes rooting so special -- aside from the fact that it's overclocked now. I thought rooting would be equivalent to jail breaking -- getting free apps, etc.. What exactly can I do with the phone, now ROOTED? Thanks for reading fellas! Would GREATLY and sincerely appreciate your time and information!

A rom is the firmware that the phone is running. Actually, clockworkmod is a recovery, you can access to it by powering off your device and then pressing volume down + power button. With it, you can backup and restore your current rom in case something goes wrong when you flash a new rom or other stuff.

Before you do that make sure that you go to settings then power and make sure that fast boot is off... Some roms come with an advanced power menu so when you trying to power down to go to recovery some you can restart and have it go right to recovery
This is one app youll want for sure and heres a vid to show you how it works

[Q] New to Optimus 3D and playing with Android

Hi all!
I just got my Optimus 3D on Tuesday on T-Mobile (In the UK) and so far I'm loving the device. Much better than the crappy iPhone 3GS I had before.
Anyway, I've been browsing around these forums and had one or two questions.
The main one is about installing the Performance pack posted here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168480 however it mentions about making a backup using ClockworkMod Recovery first. Now I did try a search and a look around, but couldn't seem to find a good tutorial on doing that. How should I go about installing ClockworkMod and how can I use it to make a backup of my phone? And in the event of anything going wrong, how can I use it to restore my phone to its previous state?
Then, when it comes to installing the pack itself, do I need to root my device in order to do this? Or can I install it using the stock LG ROM that came pre-installed?
In order to install the pack, do I simply connect using my USB cable and drag the files into the phone and over-write the pre-existing files?
Sorry if these questions sound basic, but as I said I'm somewhat new to Android, and I did try to search around but couldn't find a thread asking these questions for this device.
First root your device. Then install Rom Manager from the Market and install Clockwork thru the app. After, create a backup and then flash performance pack. I would get 2650 Quadrant score before and now I've gotten 3300!
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA App
If I root the device does that mean putting on a generic Android ROM? So would I lose all the pre-installed 3D apps/games and LG stuff? Or is rooting not the same as flashing a totally new ROM onto the phone?
Rooting just gives you access to system files and folders.
Ahhh I see, thanks.
I'll root my phone when I get home from work using the tutorial here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173431 then and download/install ROM Manager from the market. Is there any real advantage to getting the premium version of ROM Manager? Or will the free version suffice for the performance pack?
Once I have got ROM Manager installed, how do I install Clockwork and use it to take a backup? And then how do I flash the performance pack?
The premium just gets you some extra downloads (ROMS and tweaks) directly from your phone. There are no ROMS or tweaks for the O3D so no point in getting premium IMHO. The free one is more than enough.
After you install ROM manager, open the app and click on "flash clockworkmod recovery" and it will install the recovery.
After you install the recovery, you just click on backup current ROM and it will reboot and backup your phone.
Well I'm rooted and have made a backup, though I'm still unsure how to install the performance pack. I've downloaded the zip file with the folders inside, but I'm not sure what to do with it.
You need to boot into recovery and choose install from zip and chose the zip. Of course you need to put the the zip on the phone first.

Thanks! That worked a treat. Took a little bit of figuring out how to get into recovery mode, I was trying holding the volume keys whilst pressing the power button, but holding Up didn't seem to do anything, and holding down booted the phone into Safe Mode (Phones have Safe Mode's now?)
But I got there in the end through RomManager, and things certainly do seem to be running even faster now (not that it was slow before!).
Just for future reference though, incase I need to boot into recovery to do a restore, what's the correct hardware method to boot into recovery on the O3D from a powered off state?
One other question I have. When the 2.3 update comes out in September/October (I've seen conflicting reports), will I need to undo the performance pack by restoring from my pre-performance backup? Or will the 2.3 update just overwrite it? Or does nobody quite know yet?

Keep using Gingerbread, otherwise you will lose the 3D converter capabilities...
the ICS update has one but so far is not really working, not through xbsall's ported version and certainly not through the thrill's official ICS rom...

Possibly soft bricked.

I did search, but in all honesty Im not really sure what Im looking for. Yesterday I rooted with the Ace Hack. Then today I was looking through Rom Manager, and I downloaded cyanogenmod, and when it finished it wanted to load it, so I let it. Ive done two backups prior to this. Now when I turn it on the white HTC screen comes up, then it goes to the cyanogenmod 7 screen, skateboarding android with a ring around him and a loading arrow. And thats all it does, over and over. Is there a way to boot to the backups? A certain button combonation I should be using? Specific terms I should search for? Please, at least, point me in the right direction.

You'll need to do a complete wipe to install CM over an existing sense build. Sense stores the dalvik on the data partition and CM7 stores it on the cache partition. If you don't do a full wipe, then the dalvik never gets set up properly.
You should still be able to get into cwm recovery via hboot. Make sure phone is off (pull battery if necessary). Hold VOL-DOWN button while pressing power for about a second. You should end up in the HBOOT screen. Select recovery and press power. Hopefully CWM recovery will boot up and you can just do a "Wipe data/Factory Reset" and be good.
I had just found out how to boot to recovery seconds before I checked the thread again. Instead I went to backup and recover, and restored from a backup, and it didnt work. So I am trying what you suggested, I really appreciate you giving me all the steps required.
I may have told it to not delete the dalvik when it wanted to start up cyanogenmod.
So what is the best way to download roms and switch between them?

1 suggestion...ditch rom manager. I've had issues before where it messed up my downloads. Not everyone has this issue I will say, but I would try not using it. All the devs update their threads here on xda with the latest versions in their threads. Download them from the site, boot into recovery, back up your current rom, and flash away!

Agreed. I've never used RomManager with the Inspire, but I had nothing but problems with it on my Aria.
It gone. How do you switch between roms then?

Like I said above...use the threads to find the roms. Download them and flash them in recovery. ALWAYS create a back up so you can flash back to your back ups if you want. All that can be done in recovery.
If you do not know how to do this then my thoughts on why rom manager exists are true. Search the threads and learn how to do all the fun stuff without rom manager and without needing someone to hold your hand. (Wasn't being mean just a figure of speech)

[Q] now that I have root, is it different to get CWM?

easier perhaps? I read about a rom manager you download from the market...
Thanks to what efforts everyone contributes here, I've found after getting out of soft brick, I managed to get root. And I'm almost happy with the handset, now that I got root explorer to work. It works best as a browser for the 20 gigs of junk on my sd card, I've found.
What I have is the SGH-i727 att branded, returned to stock, 2.3.5, my kernel is 2.6.35.11 also I flashed something in the i777 forum, is the reason for "returned to stock". My handle could be adjusted to "stupidbiker". And I've been properly scolded.
So what's a good way to get clockwork mod in my situation?
And I don't care about a warranty or a counter, or does the counter do other bad things?
And a link for operating clockwork mod? Everyone here can push three buttons except me! LOL I've pulled it off a few times on accident, but I bet in here somewhere there is a correct procedure outlined for operating clockworkmod. A link to that would be way cool.
Wow I'm stupid. K. Thanks.
This is question and answer right? I got lots of questions!
Once I get clockworkmod in the device with all the colors, I'm gonna flash a rom, the ice cream rocket I saw, also I want to test CM7, I'm in L.A. and in the LTE area and looks like I could provide input.
I'm using search, but if someone plants a good link it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

download rom manager, install cwm from that, select tmobile galaxy s2 when asked.
see what I found
First you need to flash Clockworkmod Recovery. Then you place the zip on your SDcard, do a Nandroid backup through clockworkmod Recovery (not necessary but highly, highly recommended... especially if you have never done this before.) Then select install zip from SD card, find the .Zip file and run it and you should be golden.
What is nandroid? I use Mybackup Pro. Same sort of stuff right? I'm getting close to getting my arms around everything....

Thank you for such a quick reply. I am on AT&T. Why would I select Tmobile?
"because that's the one that works"
is an answer I can accept. I'm not fussy just stupid.
Thank you!
I have successfully flashed ClockworkMod Recovery using ROM Manager. I'm so pleased I'm gonna get premium. I see directions! It shows a button for flashing a custom rom that I store on my SD card? Do I dare?
I picked the tmobile thing and so far so good. I got data and just tried a phone call. Happy.
I will follow the other threads now. If a moderator thinks people will get more stupid reading my new thread they may delete it.
I soft bricked
figured out Odin enough to flash back to stock
got root
went to market and installed ROM Manager
turned on wifi as ROM Manager recommended
after a good hookup, I flashed ClockworkMod recovery
Surfed the web, made a phone call, took a picture, uploaded to facebook
Looks like I'm all good.
I'm feeling ready...

apparently they are very similar (but dont get crazy and start installing the tmobile gs2 kernel/roms) - also there is no skyrocket version yet...
but yes cwm does work perfectly from rom manager when you select tmobile gs2

just download rom manager, have fun.. good luck
hey ****enbiker would you say your kinda ''noobish'' when it comes to this ? lol I'm just super scared to do this. To avoid voiding my warranty I was even thinking of just saving a check and getting a nexus s to fool around with, but if your new to this and would say ''ALMOST anyone can do it'' I'd say I might be game. I just would like to learn somethings from newer rooters rather than annoy/piss off the Vets!
I have screwed up every phone I got my hands on so not a noob exactly. I am at present using cm7 and considering the new kernel released this morning. What's holding me back is how well it works and how easily I screw up and screen rotation work around is good enough so why flash and set up again... oh I will flash again but just got it all restored back and gotta take it to work tomorrow ...
Yeah pretty much if I can do it anyone can. I really am ignorant compared to a programmer or developer. But not many noobs have broken as much stuff as I have!

I am having trouble getting CWM to boot on device start-up with the Vol Up Key, is this how you do it or am I doing it wrong?

YouTube stutters on CM
Okay after I finally settled in with version 4 I have figured out that version 3 it was okay YouTube did not stutter or jerk, it is this new Da_G's kernel when the video went to hell. I remember the problem appeared in version 3 after flashing Da_G's kernel.
I have not tried any other kernel beside Da_G's with version 4. And YouTube is skippy jerking all to our dismay here. Or there, where ever I was to report this, beg pardon.

I see you don't have to press the power button?
I always begin that way, I press all three at once.
Volume up, volume down, and power.
After it buzzes three times I keep the volume up and down held, but let go of the power button.
I keep the volume up and down held until I see a logo on the screen. Then I let go of the phone and it boots into the scarey black screen with dos writing and you have to navigate with the hardware buttons.
That's how I've been doing it and it puts me into cwm recovery straight from putting the battery back in, every time.
If a true noob is reading this, you're dropping in after I've rooted and then obtained clockworkmod from the market, granted it superuser permissions, and then, after getting past the advertisements, you select to flash clockworkmod.
Also you'll see discussion of not getting a signal and getting an APN. Before you try CyanogenMod or CM7, which is what I use, you take your handset that has a working signal, and download an app from the market called "APN backup and restore" and do a backup of your APN. (not for those who refuse to populate the phone with a chip) (also not for those who don't have a working wifi readily available) Now make sure you have a copy of that on the other chip. The Skyrocket has an internal SD and also an external SD which ATT turns out is too cheap to put one in there when they sell it...
Make sure you have ApnBackupRestore folder with it's xml content on both chips.
Then go to CM7, in the op, get version 4, then go to the kernel thread and get Da_G's kernel, and put them on BOTH sd cards (so you won't have trouble finding it LOL)
And there you have it. Yet another blue collar attempt at helping folks that are smarter than I am that aren't as brave as I am!
Pull the battery, and apparently only hold the two volume buttons after putting the battery back in, never tried it that way! Wipe Data/Factory reset, find the rom and install it, find the kernel and flash that zip as well (install it, trying to help with lingo) reboot, then hook up to wifi, download APN backup/restore from the market (your phone will sync and load it for you when you log in with your google gmail to set up the handset. Run the APN backup and restore app and enjoy CyanogenMod!
My favorite, can you tell, LOL

[Q] Rooted but CMW not working

Hello, i've got a prob. I have rooted my Tab 7.0plus and have installed SU, titanium backup and and Rom Manager (Full Version)
I can back up my through Titanium fine but I just cant get CWM to work as it should. If I choose Backup existing Rom, it asks for confirmation then the phone shuts down but instead of going ito recovery it just reboots.
Same thing happens if I choose reboot into recovery.
I can't get into recovery by pressing and holding power and vol- either
Any ideas? I am a Novice so please be gentle.
Cheers
what variant of GT+ do you have?
Root != CWM
You need to actually install CWM. Read the Development thread on it, and spend some time searching, because if you don't and post a dumb question in gary's thread, he WILL bust out the flamethrower. Just spend a day or two reading through threads and Googling before posting or flashing anything and you should be fine.
Also - Don't use ROM Manager, it causes problems on many devices. ROM Manager != CWM.
I followed the instructions to the letter! I know I have root su grants permissions but there is no way to get into recovery. I cant back up or restore what other recovery would you experts suggest? wi-fi 62100
Which instructions did you follow? link?
How do you know you have 'su' permissions? Have you installed the 'superuser' application from the market? Does it work?
"Backup from existing ROM" is _NOT_ an option from within CWM Recovery. It's an option from within "ROM Manager" (which is an application by CWM.) CWM Recovery is a completely different boot mode of the tablet.
Please don't use ROM Manager on this tablet. It won't work and the results might be interesting.
If you don't want to fiddle with volume up/down and power buttons to get into recovery, I'd suggest a nice little app in the android market called "Quick Boot." It also requires the tablet is rooted (and superuser is installed), but will let you reboot directly into recovery.
After you've booted into recovery, the screen will be black with text on it. It won't be the "tablet experience" you might be used to. The banner might include something like "CWM-based Recovery." If so, you are really in CWM Recovery. If it says something like "Android system recovery (3e)", you don't have CWM Recovery installed.
Now, I'm going to try and be friendly here. That's something hard for me. Just ask around and people will tell you that all devs are Divas or something. (I prefer to think of myself as more sarcastic than diva.. but whatever.)
Advice:
Don't install CWM Recovery (or ROM Manager) on your tablet. You aren't ready. That isn't insulting - but it's honest. You don't go sky diving before you learn how to wear a parachute. Search for topics like "ODIN" so you know how to restore your tablet if you screw things up or you want to get back to a factory state for some reason. Even ask around here for links to threads that give a good intro to "ODIN", "Recovery" and other android "hacking" topics.
(Surely someone has typed up a good thread on that stuff somewhere for some device... haven't they? I realize that a search would be too broad to get any reasonably usable results.)
After you feel comfortable with destroying your tablet and bringing it back from the dead, check the thread in my signature titled "CWM-based Recovery for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus GT-P6210"
Take care
Gary
Thanks Gary but i'm afraid it's knackered. I just got a black screen and it wont boot or go into recovery or anything. It's a shame though it took me ages to save up for it.
Now is the time to go into ODIN... You can probably get the device into download mode and reflash it...
Good luck
Gary

[Q] Clockworkmod warns: "bad recovery" - What to do?

Hello guys,
a few days ago I dared to root my Xperia X10 Mini Pro with SuperOneClick and flashed a Cyanogenmod 7 Android 2.3.3 ROM. All in all, it worked pretty well.
After doing some apps installation stuff I rebooted in the Recovery (Clockworkmod which obviously came along with the ROM) and made a backup, just for the case. Afterwards, I selected "power off" in the CWM menu because I wanted to go to bed.
Then, immediately, CWM said something like "Error - This recovery seems to be bad" and something with a "risk". I managed however to power off. Can't remember if that worked via CWM or if I pushed the power off hardbutton or removed the battery.
Yet - the ROM seems to work. Now I'm a bit anxious because of the CWM error.
Is there really a risk? I planned to dare unlocking the bootloader soon. Is it dangerous to do this with a "bad recovery" or doesn't that matter at all?
Is there a possibility to repair CWM? Can I just install a new CWM? If yes - how?
Sorry - pretty noobish questions, I know.
Can you help me anyway?
Thanks a lot!
deleted post
Thank you for your help! I already thought that no one would answer because the thread disappered on page 3 of this forum
I've never heard from Odin before and therefore googled it. It only occured in connection with Samsung devices. Are you sure it is compatible to my Sony Ericsson?
Anyway, can I also install a new CWM via ROM Manager or wouldn't you recommend this?
Warning: I'm a noob. Take my advice at your own risk!
From what I understand, flashing CWM via Rom Manager is exactly the same as manual flashing (perhaps better, since the Rom Manager presumably keeps up to date). So I think you should be able to do so and make another recovery (without going through any of that manual flashing stuff). You should get a second opinion just because I'm so noobish, but I think this is the case.
However, from my limited understanding, I don't think the recovery will make any difference when dealing with the bootloader. The bootloader is, more or less, the very first set of instructions executed when the phone turns on. If you mess that up, your phone won't even be able to get into recovery mode. Also, the recovery images are stored on your sd card, which is wiped upon unlocking. Once again, I could be wrong.

Dude, what are you talking about? You can't use ODIN on a non-Samsung phone.

don't use rom manager just use the odin for your safety, you can bet that samsung users are the one benefiting on odin but as you can see erricson and samsung are both android phones and if you examine them both device have similar programs, and one thing, always keep in mind that you have to back up your current rom for emergency uses so you can still get back to were you started in case something went wrong.

OK now this is flat out wrong. Each Android device has a different program used. Samsung has Odin, HTC has an RUU. Not sure about SE. But never use a software made for one device on another unless you want a brick. Just because they both use android doesn't mean they are the same.
Thanks to everyone, especially Product F(RED)!
No offence, trich025, but I guess you were wrong.
Can I destroy something by re-installing or updating CWM via ROM-Manager just in case my CWM has a bug?
