[Q] Rooted but CMW not working - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

Hello, i've got a prob. I have rooted my Tab 7.0plus and have installed SU, titanium backup and and Rom Manager (Full Version)
I can back up my through Titanium fine but I just cant get CWM to work as it should. If I choose Backup existing Rom, it asks for confirmation then the phone shuts down but instead of going ito recovery it just reboots.
Same thing happens if I choose reboot into recovery.
I can't get into recovery by pressing and holding power and vol- either
Any ideas? I am a Novice so please be gentle.
Cheers

what variant of GT+ do you have?

Root != CWM
You need to actually install CWM. Read the Development thread on it, and spend some time searching, because if you don't and post a dumb question in gary's thread, he WILL bust out the flamethrower. Just spend a day or two reading through threads and Googling before posting or flashing anything and you should be fine.
Also - Don't use ROM Manager, it causes problems on many devices. ROM Manager != CWM.

I followed the instructions to the letter! I know I have root su grants permissions but there is no way to get into recovery. I cant back up or restore what other recovery would you experts suggest? wi-fi 62100

Which instructions did you follow? link?
How do you know you have 'su' permissions? Have you installed the 'superuser' application from the market? Does it work?
"Backup from existing ROM" is _NOT_ an option from within CWM Recovery. It's an option from within "ROM Manager" (which is an application by CWM.) CWM Recovery is a completely different boot mode of the tablet.
Please don't use ROM Manager on this tablet. It won't work and the results might be interesting.
If you don't want to fiddle with volume up/down and power buttons to get into recovery, I'd suggest a nice little app in the android market called "Quick Boot." It also requires the tablet is rooted (and superuser is installed), but will let you reboot directly into recovery.
After you've booted into recovery, the screen will be black with text on it. It won't be the "tablet experience" you might be used to. The banner might include something like "CWM-based Recovery." If so, you are really in CWM Recovery. If it says something like "Android system recovery (3e)", you don't have CWM Recovery installed.
Now, I'm going to try and be friendly here. That's something hard for me. Just ask around and people will tell you that all devs are Divas or something. (I prefer to think of myself as more sarcastic than diva.. but whatever.)
Advice:
Don't install CWM Recovery (or ROM Manager) on your tablet. You aren't ready. That isn't insulting - but it's honest. You don't go sky diving before you learn how to wear a parachute. Search for topics like "ODIN" so you know how to restore your tablet if you screw things up or you want to get back to a factory state for some reason. Even ask around here for links to threads that give a good intro to "ODIN", "Recovery" and other android "hacking" topics.
(Surely someone has typed up a good thread on that stuff somewhere for some device... haven't they? I realize that a search would be too broad to get any reasonably usable results.)
After you feel comfortable with destroying your tablet and bringing it back from the dead, check the thread in my signature titled "CWM-based Recovery for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus GT-P6210"
Take care
Gary

Thanks Gary but i'm afraid it's knackered. I just got a black screen and it wont boot or go into recovery or anything. It's a shame though it took me ages to save up for it.

Now is the time to go into ODIN... You can probably get the device into download mode and reflash it...
Good luck
Gary

Thanks mate, fixed it. you saved my bacon!

Welcome! Read, Search, and read some more. As has been quoted oft times before "search is your friend". Each of the subjects listed is readily answerable here from previous posts. If you get stuck, research some more, and if still you are stumped ask away. Lots of good people here will help but they appreciate a little homework being done upfront first. Have fun and jump in.
1) Not yet. Wait for Honeycomb and we should be in business.
2) Depends on what rom you're running on your Droid 2. If you run Cyanogen there, then install Cyanogen on your tab and it'll be identical. Otherwise if you're running more or less stock on your Droid, then there's probably not going to be an exact match.
3) You don't have to "root" per se. The bootloader is already unlocked, so, in essence, you're already rooted. Just install clockwork and you're good to go.
4) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950 will give you restore instructions.
5) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245 tells you how to get up and going with custom roms.
6) Out of the available options, I'd currently recommend VEGAN, though of course it's somewhat of a matter of opinion.
Welcome to the forums, and glad you're here. Let us know if you have other questions.

I can't ask this there because I have less then 10 posts
But on the guide about installing closkworkmod, I am having an extremely difficult time.
Entering ClockworkMod:
If you want to get into ClockworkMod you need to shut down your device, then press the Power and Volume+ button (the same way you did to install ClockworkMod).
However, when I do that, it is just installing some thing again.
And I don't even know if I installed cwm in the first place.
I unzipped the update.zip and the Recovery folder to the root of the tablet, followed the instructions it showed it updating something, and now trying to enter cwm, all it ever does is repeat the update.

Delete the update and try to boot into recovery again.
also, nothing shows up in my root folder on the tablet, and when I downloaded the internal to my tablet, and I tried to copy from downloads and paste in to the root folder, it says paste failed.
EDIT*
So I deleted the clockwork d/l from sdcard/downloads, and tried to boot into recovery, It showed me the same install box, however I had deleted the install zip.
So I am pretty sure I didn't install cwm in the first place.
I don't know how to get the update.zip into the right location, and I don't have a microSD to install it from.
Cancel that, I don't know what I was doing wrong.
It is now installed.

Q about cwm 3.0+ and 2.3.2

Out of sheer curiosity and wonder, I noticed after the OTA was installed, su was not working, duh, I knew that would happen, so I re rooted the device, I made a back up of the rom every single time it was updated, so I noticed when clicking "reboot into recovery" option in rom manager (keep in mind I am on 2.3.2) it boots me into stock android <3e> recovery and not CWM 3.0.x.x. Which is weird because after that I do a battery pull to jump into the bootloader to access recovery there, nope, still takes me to the damn stock recovery, so back to the bootloader and fastboot my way back. After that, I noticed once back booted in android I go into RM and "flash recovery" (3.0.x.x) and voila! I get back into CWM, but I have to flash it every single time.
Has anyone noticed this?
Feel free to hit me up on twitter since I try to stay outta forums, thank you.

Wow, I'm sorry to be cranky, but this is unreal.
Your question has been asked and answered a hundred times in this forum if you'd bothered to search, and you're not even willing to a monitor the forum for an answer, you want us to come search you out on Twitter?!?!?
Here's a hint to find the answer to your question, use the forum search button and search for the phrase /etc/install-recovery.sh.
You'll find dozens of posts telling you to rename that file, which Google added with the updates to overwrite any custom recoveries with the stock one on each boot of the phone... Rename the file and you won't have to flash cwm every time any more.
Okay, that last post was a bit more harsh than I meant it to be, perhaps, but I'm leaving it intact. Since you "try to stay outta forums" you probably don't know proper etiquette:
1) search before asking; your issue has most likely been asked before. It's annoying to forum regulars when people show up and ask the same thing over and over that's already been answered.
2) read the FAQ thread before asking; your issue has most likely been addressed in it. It's annoying to forum regulars when people show up and ask the same thing over and over that's already been answered in the FAQ.
3) if you're going to come to the forums and ask a question, then come back periodically and see if it's been answered. We're doing you a favor answering your question, at least show some effort by coming back and reading it instead of asking someone else to come find you in another forum and spoon feed it to you. If you're really just too important or time-challenged to do that, then subscribe to the thread you created and get an email notice when posts are made to it.[/I]
You'll need to rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.old.
Its located in the /etc system folder. You can use root explorer or any another alternative. Refer to the rooting guides available as they include a more thorough explanation of how to do this. And please, no twitter.

I don't recall that working for me. I'm not even sure why that would work. Every boot up that script is ran unless you delete or rename it, isn't it? I guess I'll have to play with it when I get a chance.
EDIT: Do you mean renaming clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.img to just recovery.img when pushing it via fastboot? Never tried that here.

Just to be clear, we're talking about having clockwork NOT overwritten by the stock each bootup. I'm a little confused because you say "that's how i do it every time..." If it sticks, why do you need to do it more than once?
Assuming you mean clockwork sticking without renaming the install-recovery.sh file, please read on. If that's not what you meant, skip the rest below...
I don't think people necessarily miss it, they assume things like you say
I didn't follow your guide to root mine (it wasn't out yet, and isn't Mac), but obviously I've read it. I did notice that you rename it, but assumed it's not necessary, since Koush's instructions don't have you do that and you get a successful flash without renaming.
Anyways, I just tested this out on my NS.
I was on stock recovery, and I have not renamed my /etc/install-recovery.sh file.
I booted the phone to fastboot mode, renamed my clockwork recovery to recovery.img.
I then "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and after a successful flash message, selected recovery from the fastboot menu.
The phone booted to clockwork recovery, which confirms a successful installation of it.
I then rebooted the phone, and after it was fully booted, rebooted it to fastboot mode. When I selected recovery, I then get the box with an arrow pointing into the android, so I hit the proper keys and I ended up in stock recovery (blue text).
The install-recovery.sh script still reflashed the stock recovery even though I flashed it per your instructions.
If I rename that script and then install clockwork, any attempt to boot recovery goes straight to clockwork recovery (orange text, extra features, etc).
Did I do something different than you're suggesting? Based on my test, I don't think you have any option other than to rename that script (or delete the backup image it uses to flash stock) if you want to remain on Clockwork.
Thoughts?
you should still have the CW recovery, if you pushed it into the phone as recovery.img
after i reboot the phone, i can go back into CW just by selecting Recovery
i just use those reboot software, or manually hold volume up + power
then i get into the fastboot mode
in fastboot mode i select Recovery
and that takes me back to CW recovery
i did not rename the install-recovery.sh, just in case i ever want to restore the phone back to stock
i do know that if i do not rename the recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.img to recovery.img, then i will lose CW right after the reboot

Well, that's a weird one. You didn't say I tested it wrong, but I am getting different results than you.
If I were ambitious I would make a youtube video of it to show my results, not as a challenge, just to see if I'm doing something wrong.
Are you stock ROM? If not, maybe that's a difference that would explain it.
i'm on Bionix 1.3 beta
perhaps that's the difference?

Almost certainly the difference.
I'll wager that if you go to the /system/etc folder that Bionix has removed that script for you. That would explain why it's not running and restoring the stock.
Check that out and let me know; we may have solved the mystery here.
FYI, I just downloaded the bionix 1.3 files and checked inside, no install-recovery.sh in it...

[Q] Rooted via One-Click Live CD...now what?

Hello!
Rooted via the one-click live script. At the end of the process...it notified me that my system boot image was in the home directory. This was a tad misleading to a new Android user. I figured that the image was on my tablet, or my MicroSD card, so i rebooted back in to windows to "copy to my local disk or a usb drive" (that's the part that made me think that the image was on the device. Now i realize that it was in the memory.
Did i lose something big by rebooting and effectively deleting the image?
Anyways, i'm currently working on a B70, and would like to understand the difference between the stock rom, CWM. I have also seen something called Prime written about in somewhere around 100 different places.
What's the difference between stock, CWM, and prime?
Which is best for a tinkerer?
Lastly, i installed ROM Manager at the suggestion of a article. No matter what i do, i'm constantly told that i need Clockwork Mod Recovery installed to do anything, but when i go to flash clockworkmod recovery i can't find the transformer in the phone model list.
I'd also like to make a Nandroid backup (i understand this is a bit akin to creating a restore image of the whole--and i mean WHOLE tablet), but all of the searching I've done in the market and via Google has led me astray.
What steps are customary good practice to take after rooting for the first time, and where can i find those apps/programs?
I know this is a lot, i apologize, but there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of articles, each of them slightly different, which slightly different versions of software/roms/apps.
Spreading thanks.
When you boot with the live CD, it will be in the home directory.
CWM is not a rom, it is a custom recovery. It is needed to flash roms. Prime is a very close to stock rom that is great for tinkering.
Rom manager is the program that goes hand in hand with clockwork mod. Unfortunately it doesn't work as far as I've seen on the tf. Once you have CWM installed you can access it by holding volume down while powering up for five seconds and then pressing volume up. There you can backup, flash prime rom, and you're set!
Thanks! That clears a lot up for me! I used the live-cd method to root, and there are a ton of guides on installing CWM Recovery. I think i'd like to flash prime.
I have the 8.5.6.9 firmware, so which guide would be best to use to install CWM recovery?
I've been looking at various methods, and can't find any obvious match. Does the "US" in my firmware mean that i have a US transformer and not a WW? I got this through a distributor and not a regular retail store. So i suppose it's possible i have a unique device. Because of this, i've been thinking about un-rooting, and then using BRK's script to root+ install busywork+ CWM recovery. The live cd one-click-root didn't actually give me the option to install CWM recovery.
I suppose i should make a nandroid backup before doing all of this, amirite?

1- The live cd from version V2 comes with the ability to install cwm; maybe you missed some text.
2- You lost nothing: from version V3 you can unroot and revert to stock boot and recovery images (this won't work if you install custom ROM or KERNEL). You can always flash a stock kernel and recovery with the script from brk.
3- you can install cwm with my livecd, with mashi's script or with brk's script. Anyway Rom Manager won't work.
4- the so called "nandroid backup" is the backup you did when you boot in cwm. So if you don't have cwm installed, you can't do a nandroid backup first
5- Are you sure you don't have cwm installed? With your tablet powered off, press and hold VOL DOWN + POWER until you see a small text in the upper left corner of the screen. The release all and press VOL UP. If you see an orange menu, then you have cwm installed; if you see a green android with an exclamation mark, then no cwm.
6- For question about the live cd , please ask in the thread.
i very much appreciate the timely response from you guys.
I was extremely careful when I used your live CD. I was never explicitly given the choice to install cwm.
This is my first ever android device, and the fact that I got it rooted, backed up, and flashed + updated is a testament to all of you that work so very hard.
Your one click live-cd gave me the confidence to test root with my B70 on my very first day of tinkering. For that I'll donate as soon I'm able.
I'm currently on prime 1.82 patched to 1.84 (even though i dont see much difference between this and stick...i did receive a nice performance boost) and just solved a few market errors I was having (mainly the "error processing" error).
I suppose I was overwhelmed by the multitude of guides and methods. I just needed the encouragement.
Well guys this was the next to last frontier for me. All that's left is arduino and development!!!

The officially unofficial Tiamat Moray ROM Q&A Thread

This thread is an attempt to help out the Tiamat Developers by answering the frequently asked questions in one consolidated thread. This thread should also be helpful to those who either cannot use the search feature or are having a hard time figuring out the correct search terms to find what they are looking for. If you have suggestions or added questions/answers feel free to reply and I will update the OP.
NOTE: I am not a developer. All of the information in this thread is from other members who have helped me out or information I found in the XDA forums. I do not take credit for any of the great work that has been done on this ROM and I will point back to the original answer when possible. I am only trying to help lessen the burden on the developers so they can spend more time getting us the best features. Hopefully you find this helpful as well.
I've flashed this ROM and now I get update notifications. Should I accept the update? How do I stop these notifications?
No, you should never accept an OTA upgrade when using any custom ROM/Kernel. This could result in severe problems. Your best bet is to be patient and give the developers time to react. If the update is worthwhile I am sure they will roll it out pretty quickly.
To get rid of the notifications flash Mod pack 3 as noted here.
OK I made the mistake of accepting the OTA update and now my Xoom won't boot. What can I do?
okantomi said:

If not, you can try and get fastboot by tapping volume down sooner after it reboots.

From this thread.
With this ROM certain websites don't load correctly or I can't get to the mobile version of a site.
This ROM by default sets the User Agent String to "desktop". If you want to revert to the stock settings flash either Mod pack 1 or 2 depending which version of Moray you are running. Look here.
I flashed this ROM and now when I click links in email or my file explorer the screen just dims and nothing happens.
This is a bug in Android 3.2 and not specific to this ROM. To solve this, simply ensure auto-rotate is enabled and rotate the device from landscape to portrait and back to landscape. The app chooser window should appear allowing you to choose which app to open the selected file.
I just flashed this ROM and the speed is amazing, so I OC'd it to 1.7GHz cuz I want more and I am now stuck in a boot loop. This worked for others why not me?
The Xoom was only specified to run at 1.0 GHz, anything beyond that is a gift. Due to part-to-part variation not everyone's Xoom will be stable at the same speed. Yes some people are able to run at 1.7 GHz, but many cannot. For your specific Xoom try out the various speeds, but do NOT click "Set on Boot". This way if it crashes it will revert back to stock speed and you will be able to boot. Once you are satisfied with a speed then feel free to enable "Set on Boot". Before you do so I would suggest making a nandroid backup so you can restore just in case.
How do you get out of this boot-loop? The only way I know of is to boot into recovery and restore a nandroid backup if you have one or perform a full wipe if you do not.
I updated to the latest CWM and I cannot find the zip card or I get "get error: E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)."
Latest is not always the best, for the Xoom you need to either use ClockworkMod 3.2.0.0 (R4C) or CMW Rogue Recovery v1.1.1
After flashing this ROM the Motorola icon gets distorted during boot up, is that a problem?
Basically it is not a problem. This kernel has a patch provided by NVidia which causes the distortion during boot. It does not cause any problems after it boots.
Is there a way to get the stock WiFi and Battery icons?
Yes
How do I boot into recovery without ADB or my PC attached?
There are a couple methods.
1) The latest Tiamat ROM includes this if you press and hold the power button. Just pick what you want and hit OK.
2) Download and install "Quick Boot" from the market. It gives you the above options as well as others when you run the app.
3) Turn the Xoom on, wait ~2 seconds after your see the Dual Core logo, then press the volume down key. In the upper left corner it should say "Android Recovery", then press the volume up key to select it.
How do I get started? Any good guides?
There are several guides that are pretty good. The best one I have found and personally used is here.
The Xoom Heaven thread found here is also a good place to start for all sorts of information.
If you have another question please feel free to post to this thread. If you are having a problem or have a question it is likely that someone else along the lines will have the same problem or question. I will continue to update this OP with the list of F.A.Q.s.
Additional Q&As
After installing this ROM I am having issues with the market not finding all of my apps or apps are giving errors when trying to install them.
See this post for one possible solution.

i performed a factory reset from the os-> settings and once again performed a wipe/factory reset from the cwm recovery but still can't get back to the initial setup screen (where you enter your google a/c, etc)
any idea?
Thanks!!
Here is one..
Why does Market show up in USD even though my locale is set to UK, my language is English British along with my keyboard layout?
Ive had boot loops twice. Both times i could get into recovery but could not get backup to restore . kept getting cant read /sdcard. also cant reinstall update .zip becuase the sd card wont mount. I have only gotten back in by letting it sit powered off for a bit.
any ideas?
should i adb a stock image and start again?
should i flash a different recovery?

What version of recovery is installed now? If you have the version that doesn't recognize your external sdcard you should certainly flash a compatible recovery version through fastboot.

Is there a way to check version without booting into recovery? Which version would you suggest?
And thank you

There are only two recoveries compatible..
you will find them in the Xoom Android Developmet Board in the sticky threads

Links to both of these recoveries are also in the first post of this thread.

Guess I should have read the thread before posting here, sorry for being a troll.
I tried this ROM on my 4G Xoom, but it left me without 4G or 3G (wifi only). Any way to get this working, or do I have to wait for an update?
I did try activating the network in settings, but it never connected even half an hour.
Thanks to steps mentioned by user 'LordDeath' in another thread and a bit of experimenting with a rooted 4G Xoom and a friends 3G Xoom running Moray, there seems to be a remedy for those who are having issues with the market compatibility issues as well as missing apps. I did not activate until attempting to sign in to the market and had missing apps and compatibility issues. I simply did a full wipe & reset and made sure the full activation went through in set up then let it automatically start restoring. I took a peek in the market after a a minute and all my apps were back with no compatibility issues. Here is a copy of his original post and mine but the last step was not needed for me.

Translated into English it means "Error while processing the purchase". It was a free app, btw.
To solve this issue I did the following:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Active the device during the wizard on the first boot with my Google account
3. Restore the nandroid backup of the official 3.1 ROM
Therefore it seems that the market servers check your device-compatibility only during the activation process at the first startup.

"This fixed everything for my friend running Moray and even corrected the issues on my 4G Xoom..."
I should add that though this fixes the issue, if you change your pixel density you may run into similar issues but can correct it by setting it back to 160 before going into the market.

[Q] Clockworkmod warns: "bad recovery" - What to do?

Hello guys,
a few days ago I dared to root my Xperia X10 Mini Pro with SuperOneClick and flashed a Cyanogenmod 7 Android 2.3.3 ROM. All in all, it worked pretty well.
After doing some apps installation stuff I rebooted in the Recovery (Clockworkmod which obviously came along with the ROM) and made a backup, just for the case. Afterwards, I selected "power off" in the CWM menu because I wanted to go to bed.
Then, immediately, CWM said something like "Error - This recovery seems to be bad" and something with a "risk". I managed however to power off. Can't remember if that worked via CWM or if I pushed the power off hardbutton or removed the battery.
Yet - the ROM seems to work. Now I'm a bit anxious because of the CWM error.
Is there really a risk? I planned to dare unlocking the bootloader soon. Is it dangerous to do this with a "bad recovery" or doesn't that matter at all?
Is there a possibility to repair CWM? Can I just install a new CWM? If yes - how?
Sorry - pretty noobish questions, I know.
Can you help me anyway?
Thanks a lot!

Thank you for your help! I already thought that no one would answer because the thread disappered on page 3 of this forum
I've never heard from Odin before and therefore googled it. It only occured in connection with Samsung devices. Are you sure it is compatible to my Sony Ericsson?
Anyway, can I also install a new CWM via ROM Manager or wouldn't you recommend this?
Warning: I'm a noob. Take my advice at your own risk!
From what I understand, flashing CWM via Rom Manager is exactly the same as manual flashing (perhaps better, since the Rom Manager presumably keeps up to date). So I think you should be able to do so and make another recovery (without going through any of that manual flashing stuff). You should get a second opinion just because I'm so noobish, but I think this is the case.
However, from my limited understanding, I don't think the recovery will make any difference when dealing with the bootloader. The bootloader is, more or less, the very first set of instructions executed when the phone turns on. If you mess that up, your phone won't even be able to get into recovery mode. Also, the recovery images are stored on your sd card, which is wiped upon unlocking. Once again, I could be wrong.

Dude, what are you talking about? You can't use ODIN on a non-Samsung phone.
trich025 said:
don't use rom manager just use the odin for your safety, you can bet that samsung users are the one benefiting on odin but as you can see erricson and samsung are both android phones and if you examine them both device have similar programs, and one thing, always keep in mind that you have to back up your current rom for emergency uses so you can still get back to were you started in case something went wrong.
if i helped you with this problem you could click the thanks button >>>>

OK now this is flat out wrong. Each Android device has a different program used. Samsung has Odin, HTC has an RUU. Not sure about SE. But never use a software made for one device on another unless you want a brick. Just because they both use android doesn't mean they are the same.
Thanks to everyone, especially Product F(RED)!
No offence, trich025, but I guess you were wrong.
Can I destroy something by re-installing or updating CWM via ROM-Manager just in case my CWM has a bug?
