[Q] Flash Rom without Root Prior? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a TF but it has a s/n of B80 so I know I can't root for the time being. I have a Moto Backflip and a Samsung Captivate so I feel I'm pretty experienced when it comes to modifying Android devices. I've yet to run into a root issue like this for my TF. So my core question can I still flash a rom without root? I tried searching for this but I'm not having any luck. If you have any info or links to other threads that would be awesome. Thanks!

No you cannot. To flash a ROM you need CWM recovery and to get CWM you need root.

Need to Re-Root TF? Install CWM

Hey All,
I posted a question the other day that nobody got to... no worries.
I have obtained a full root. I have SU and have root apps running like TiBu, SetCPU and others and they work fine. I have root, I just can't get CWM.
I used this link at first to get both root and CWM. Like I said... root worked fine, CWM not so much. I have tried several times following those same steps to flash the cwm again and again but I only end up with an Android with an exclamation point.
I also tried a second computer running the same steps -- same results.
What I'm wondering now -- Can I use this other guide and instead of following the full guide, I skip to the CWM part. I should not have any problems with that, correct? The first part is getting temp root and the last part is full root. I already have full root, so can I skip to the CWM?
Or does anyone else have ideas?
Thank you!
I'm not that knowledgable about all of this stuff, I tried that method last night to try to root my phone and like others get stuck at the point where its dl the volds. I think this method was built for hc 3.0 and 3.01.
It won't hurt to give it a try though.
I just wish i could get root. To me this thing is a nightmare to hack. I managed to get my atrix rooted with cwm, unlocked with a custom rom, and this tab is tougher for me to crack.
Best of luck to you.

Kernel/ota questions

I've successfully recovered my tablet using this method. I was trying to update my TF using the batch script method and somehow managed to flash an outdated kernel. I know this because Asus tech support told me that was the reason my TF wasn't receiving the ota to 3.2. However, Asus tech support also told me that I could flash a new kernel by downloading the source code onto my tablet, then the TF would automatically recognize the [.rar] file and install my new kernel; which didn't work out as you might imagine.
I am now on official 3.1 8.4.4.11.and my kernel is v 2.6.36.3-00011-g3eb19ex And I can't get the OTA update. At one time I had official 3.2 [after previously flashing stock 3.1] but decided to try to root when I found out Netflix wasn't officially supported like the EEE pad site says it does.
Every time I try the batch script method, I end up stuck on the eee pad logo screen. Adb is working as well as apx drivers. Ultimate goal here is stock 3.2 rooted with netflix, but at this point I'd settle for stock official 3.2.
Any ideas? Tia
You may get help if you post your QUESTIONS in the correct forum.

Thanks for the input. I just felt that that based on the content of the question, it would be better suited here.
you could try the zip file from the thread titled [OTA]Stock 3.2 zip file
And +1 on wrong section. This is not related to developing a new ROM or features for the Eee Pad.
I'm trying to avoid flashing CWM, that's where I end up bricking it.

I would suggest you to try Nvflash. it is the easiest way to root that tf.
I think the relationship between nvflash and the TF is complicated.
There are a few bootloaders out there, including the one used by custom roms, as well as the 4 stock ones.
My theory is that the kernel images in the boot and recovery images have to match the bootloader that is on the TF.
Throw in the fact that the bootloader is only written using the nvflash --create command or during the OTA update, and we have TFs with all kinds of different bootloaders going around that won't match what people are flashing. I think this is why CWM breaks whenever there is a stock OTA that rewrites the bootloader. I think most people brick trying to go back to stock from a custom rom. Going from stock to custom usually isn't a problem because the compatible bootloader is flashed in the rooting process.
Is this the first time we've seen an completely unlocked bootloader on Android?

No. Android Development is for "DEVELOPMENT" does this thread have any kind of release? No.
That's why there's a sticky thread that says,
[REF] SEARCH BEFORE POSTING!! All Questions Go In The Q&A FORUM!!

ok folks i get it. I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do right now about accidently posting this in the wrong forum? Please forgive me. Mods feel free to move the thread or ban me or both. Whatever the normal punishment is.
Use the NVFlash unroot method here:
http://tabletroms.com/forums/showthread.php?1071-Asus-Transformer-NVFlash-Stock-3.1-Recovery-Roms
That will get it back to stock everything with 8.4.4.5. Then, you can manually install 8.4.4.11 with the download on the Asus website. After that it will recognize the OTA update to 8.6.5.6. Once you've done all that, use the Batch Script for a quick root, and you're done. I did this today. As long as you follow all the steps, it's a breeze.
I don't think it will recognize the OTA update to 8656. Roach's update will work, but not the stock update.

It will recognize it, because if you follow all the steps I listed, you're completely stock until you run the batch script to root 3.2. I did this myself on my transformer today.
My OP is not very clear, but that is exactly the steps I've followed to get to where I am today. I've given it 2 days to detect the new update and i've got nothing. I'm currently sitting on stock 8.4.4.11 waiting for the OTA.

[Q] How to root TW 8.6.5.9 20110816?

I have stock TW_epad-8.6.5.9-20110816. I noticed a couple of ways to root older versions.
How about my rom version? Which way to go to root my TF?
I have the same issue, I had it rooted when it was 8.6.5.6 but when I did the upgrade and tried to reroot it with the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714, the same instructions I used the first time, with the new boot image provided and followed all the same instructions, yet for some reason it is not rooting this time.
may i ask which updated version are you on? is it 8.6.5.9tw? and what happened to the TF after you cannot root it this time
also very curious to know if it's my firmware. I also have 8.6.5.9 20110816
I've tried countless rooting and trying to install cwm and flashing roms... I literally kept running into walls. So after some less doing and more reading, I am suspecting it might have something to do with my device itself.
Also, I read that it might be related to the fact I have the newer TF, B70K?
if anyone can confirm or relate, that'd be much appreciated
thanks

I successfully rooted my recently updated Tranformer using this method: http://www.todaytablet.com/step-by-...omb-3-2-root-with-one-click-for-windows-user/
I actually rooted my device with the same procedure. I learned about 8.6.5.9 20110816 twenty minuts later (doh!). This removed root of course. I re-rooted it using the same instructions and image I burned. Rooted once again.
Sucessfuly rooted and installed CWM and custom ROM
Guys,
yesterday i received my transformer from germany, DE build 8.5.6.9 version. I managed to root it with this method
Here is the link

Sorry - seems like I just posted the exact same question.
I will just add that I tried to install CWM recovery before updating the FW to 10.6.1.27.5 and had the exact same problem with the previous FW.
does anyone know if i can downgrade it from 10.6.27.5 to 10.6.27.1 or even before that?
thanks.

Welcome to XDA,
To solve any problems with your device, 1st search and read, read, read! Then ask questions if you can't find it. If anyone helps you, thank them using the "Thanks" button. Take things slowly, don't overload yourself with information. Eventually you'll be a pro and helping others out.
Watch this to learn not how to be a n00b new user and to be a good user.

If you read enough, you would of learnt all (stock) TF300T users lost root after the update to .27.1, and also .27.5.
To get root, try downgrading and rooting via mottochopper
Read these:
Mother of all guides and then some
Downgrade Android
Use this for root afterwards, works with versions before .27.1
Have fun rooting! If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.
Hit that thanks button, its a good habit to get into.
problem resolved

questin about cwm

HI I bought this RCA tablet RCT6272W23 and took the chance of rooting through KINGO in which it worked like a charm. The question I have is could trying to install CWM so I can make a complete backup of the stock rom cause me to brick the Tablet? I know their is no support for the tablet and it is not on the ROM managers list of devices. I was just wondering if it was a risk to just try it? thanks in advance
Well I don't know or think there is any cwm recovery for your tablet. So I don't see how you can install any?
