I've researched around and there seems to be quite a few methods of rooting my asus transformer. I'm no expert and can understand the methods but want to root my tab without, well, 'rooting' it!!!
What is the most simplest method for rooting my device? Is the build number important to what BLOB version I use? Do I really know what that means?
Dumb it down for me please.

Agreed. I just bought my transformer today, and I've been on the transformers thread for quite some time now and I'm still a little confused about the root process. This is obviously not my first rodeo (hince my signature below). The transformer section needs to be updated and organized better, to the benefit of noobs and androidaholics alike. Can I get a mod to do this, and have the Reference Guide in the development section updated and possibly have better and thorough instructions? Speaking from experience, doing this will prevent alot of un-needed posts clogging up the forum.
So far, from what I gather is that if you just bought one as of this date, and your transformer has 3.1 or 3.2, you have to use the nvflash method to root. If this is true, then my question is, what if I have 3.1, and i want to root, but do not want to install a custom rom at this time? The instructions say that you have to install the prime rom, in which I don't want to do.
While i am no linux user, (having been a windows follower for decades), i find this linux-based root procedure to be extremely user-friendly and a no-brainer to deploy and use.

I just wrote my own unrooting script and that script that you mentioned looks pretty good to me. A lot easier than the method I used to root.
If you have a B7O tablet, you may not be able to use nvflash anymore. There are reports that ASUS changed the secure boot key on the latest versions, so the one used in nvflash won't work.
I have the b6 model with the build no in my signature. Which method do I use? Please advise

I just rooted my transformer using this method. It works. Its the closest you are going to get to a one click method at this time. And my transformer had android 3.1 out of box and i updated to 3.2 before attempting this method.
Lol I have "bricked" my Transformer like 5 times today trying to get the god forsaken Clockwork Recovery Mod installed...
I've gotten really good at rooting the thing, but every time I try to push Clockwork Recovery with nvflash, either the recovery doesn't work (nothing happens after Power+Volume down followed by Volume Up... It just sits there), or the thing won't boot.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. I really want Netflix on this thing, and the only I seem to be able to change out the necessary library is through CWM...

I was sucessful using ubuntu 11.04. You have to issue the sudo command to run the process. Theres no reason why it wouldnt for kubutu. Also, the creator of this method just upgraded his method today to version 2. It was version 2 that i was able to root, making sure that i followed the instructions carefuly

Crap! I just ran into another problem...
After I used Clockwork Recovery to flash 3.2, Clockwork went away! I even ran the Live CD again to see if I could get it to go. Does Clockwork Recovery not support 3.2 yet?
That i'm not sure of . I chose not to install clockworkmod recovery.
Try running the CD again.

It really doesn't get much easier than this.Took me longer to download the iso find a program to burn it to disk than it took to root
Made CWR a breeze too. Just getting rid of browser adds with Addfree and backups with titanium is worth rooting
I have stock TW_epad-8.6.5.9-20110816. I noticed a couple of ways to root older versions.
How about my rom version? Which way to go to root my TF?
I have the same issue, I had it rooted when it was 8.6.5.6 but when I did the upgrade and tried to reroot it with the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714, the same instructions I used the first time, with the new boot image provided and followed all the same instructions, yet for some reason it is not rooting this time.
may i ask which updated version are you on? is it 8.6.5.9tw? and what happened to the TF after you cannot root it this time

I actually rooted my device with the same procedure. I learned about 8.6.5.9 20110816 twenty minuts later (doh!). This removed root of course. I re-rooted it using the same instructions and image I burned. Rooted once again.
Sucessfuly rooted and installed CWM and custom ROM

So today I decided to root my phone. I want to be able to use WiFi tethering without paying their ridiculous monthly fee, so I came here and read all I could about rooting my phone.
I downloaded the "Charge Kit V2" and proceeded with the instructions to install the "EE4stock_DXC.tar.md5" file to my phone. Everything worked as advertised and was completed in less than three minutes. I boot the phone, select the reboot option, and everything appears exactly as I left it.
Thinking I was rooted I downloaded the Android WiFi Tether app, but the thing won't work! So I go back to the FAQ and read that I could check to see if I were rooted by downloading a terminal emulator and typing "SU" into it. I did, and got "Permission Denied". I'm thinking this means I'm not rooted...
Am I rooted? If not, what did I do wrong? If so, why won't my WiFi tether work?

I don't think that package is rooted, or at least it didn't root you when flashed (which happens sometimes).. use odin to flash CWM, boot straight into it and flash the superuser apk, when you boot up update the superuser app in the market and update the binary, after that you'll be rooted no problems

this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580 is a pretty good info thread on how to flash and what everything is though it's a little dated and most of the roms/CWM files are older, everything else like drivers and Odin versions are fine... CWM is short for ClockWorkMod recovery and along with Odin is what we use to flash roms/kernels/etc. to our phones, and yes in Odin it goes in the same PDA spot as a rom and flashes like normal... however since you don't have a custom kernel to make CWM 'stick' in your system its one time use after you flash it in Odin and you will have to Odin flash it again every time you want to use it, making it perfect if all you want to do is simply root the phone

After tinkering with it a few times, as well as a scare with a failed flash and temporarily bricked phone, I got it to work! I'm now rooted and have successfully run the tethering app with no errors.

Great site and forum you guys have here. I've been lurking in the background for about a month now since converting to Android from Crackberry, studying as much as possible about rooting my new Skyrocket.
I've narrowed down the method that I'll be using shortly to the 3 subject options, and was just wondering, what you recommend and why? I've also watched videos on each, and they all seem like they work and I can handle the task. But I want to avoid tripping the flash counter or getting myself in other more complicated trouble that I'd need your help with.
My plan is to root, flash CWM, do a Nandroid backup, then just freeze some things up using Titanium Backup to start. I think I said that right. Maybe not. But that's the plan for now, without new ROMs or kernels. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, and I apologize for the rookie questions. Again, great forum.
I can tell you a little trick that might save you from ever having to trip you flash counter. Use the odin method of rooting, its in the dev section. After you push cwm with odin, boot into cwm and make a backup of stock unrooted. Then proceed to flashing the superuser zip and rooting. Take the stock unrooted backup and save it to your desktop or something. Now your rooted with cwm . If you ever have to restore to stock you can restore the unrooted stock backup, then push the stock recovery with odin and presto your back to stock without tripping counter. Only works if you backup stock firmware before rooting. Also I've noticed that usually when I softbrick I can get away with just flashing cwm in odin, booting into recovery and proceeding from there. If I could start all over that's how ide do it I think. Just an idea. Also this method gets you farmiliar with odin, which you'll desperately need someday, if you already know how to use it you'll be set. A good thing to do is know is how to fix your phone "before" you break it lol(cause you surely will at some point). Then there's no panic when it happens cheers and good luck!

I'm no expert but when I updated from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 using S.O.C was no longer an option. I had to use the all power ODIN. link
But I suggest reading, googling, and rereading steps until you're confident of what to do without guessing if you're doing it right or not.
BTW, don't discount ROMs, they will make you love your phone more than you thought possible. And with the initial Nandroid bup you can always revert...

After a few days of research and trying to figure out how not to trip the flash counter, this is the best way. Huge thumbs up for the suggestion!
Wow. That is really great information. Thank you! I had written off the Odin method, as it seemed a little complicated for a rookie like myself -- hence why it wasn't included in the subject options.
But after reading what you had to say, it makes complete sense. The Odin method is the only way to make a complete backup (using CWM) of my truly unrooted device, where the other methods, the mirror (backup) would be of a rooted device so a restore back to stock would be more difficult. Correct?
I just read all 20 pages of the link you supplied, and it seems I've got a pretty good understanding of what to do and what not to do. Will give it a whirl today and let you know. By the way, someone posted a video which talks about how the superuser.zip file is not necessary -- this is not true if you aren't putting on a new ROM. Which I am not. Just a heads up for anyone else out there looking at it. Thanks again man, you nailed it.

A restore to stock wouldn't necessarily be any more complicated because we have odin files for that too. But it will trip your counter. Sometimes tripping the counter is unavoidable, I pretend like mine doesn't even exist. Let us know if you need any help
Remember to make the nandroid backup of stock unrooted before you flash the superuser.zip.
When you do flash the superuser zip, it might throw up an error and not flash, this is ok, happens to me everytime, just keep trying to install it and eventually she will take:thumbup:

Perfect success! Couldn't have gone any better. From the driver installs, to the Odin launch, CWM backup, and finally the SU flash -- each step was flawless. It took 3 tries on the Superuser.zip file before it installed without errors, which was expected. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I just updated Superuser to the latest version, but now I'm seeing that Busybox seems to be an important add-on now that I'm rooted for some apps to work properly. Agreed? If so, is the popular version on Play the one to download?
Also, whats the best way for me to send the backup I just made from my phone to computer as you mentioned? Where is it located on phone? Thanks again. You've been a huge help, and I'm stoked to be part of the club -- maybe just a junior member still, but learning more each day.

The cwm backup will probably be on you external SD under clockworkmod>backup. If not on external use internal. Just mount USB storage on your computer. After you get the stock backup off your SD , boot back into recovery and make a backup of your rooted stock firmware if you already haven't. You want to always have atleast one nandroid on your SD in case boo boo's occur.
As for the busy box thing I'm not exactly sure. All I can say on that is if any app request you to update it just allow it to. Maybe try the market app you mentioned. I'm not entirely too sure. Also maybe consider flashing a rom. You'll have that rooted backup on your SD you can restore whenever you'd like.

Thanks again for the help and props. More success yesterday; moved the full stock ROM (unrooted) Nandroid to my computer, and then made another Nandroid of my rooted stock ROM. That too I put on the computer, but also left a copy my SD card.
Installed Titanium Backup Pro, and am now studying up on which .APK files I can safely freeze. Found a spreadsheet from the SG2 forum, and I'm guessing it's applicable for our device. Would post the link, but I'm not allowed to yet.
Lastly, I picked up the Nexus 2100 mah battery for which I'll be installing shortly as well. Starting to get more tuned up now, but you are right, once all this is complete I'll look at some custom ROM's as well. I guess freezing all of these files wouldn't really be necessary if I put on a new ROM anyway. Oh well. Baby steps.

Guys, my son messed up and followed instructions off the Max "HighOnAndroid" at www.galaxynote5root.com
He flashed twrp 3.0.2-1
He followed step by step. After flashing twrp, he booted back into recovery and flashed
No-verify-opt-encrypt
And
Update-SuperSU-v2.46
When he booted it back up, its stuck on the sprint splash screen. It is specifically in the screen that says LTE Plus More spectrum better network.
After I got off from work, I came home to him crying.
Ok, I have started to download the factory ROM from Sammobile but I am wondering if maybe there isnt an easier fix. I am not to familiar with changing kernels. Ive never needed to worry about them. Could I maybe just need to flash a new kernel?
From looking on here, really all he needed to do was flash twrp then SuperSU... Does anyone know a way to fix this faster than waiting 6 hours for the Sammobile stock rom?

Ok guys...
I got the file downloaded from sammobile. I installed it and got it installed and working. Then I tried to do the root myself. I followed the guide on this site. However I still couldn't get it working. It was still bootlooping. But not the same bootloop. This time around, it didn't get past the very 1st screen. I again flashed back the stock ROM and again everything works fine.
The files I tried to install are:
Twrp-3.0.2-1nobleltespr.tar.md5
Then I did the twrp install boot deal, booted into twrp and installed:
BeastMode-Stock-N920P-1.3-O16.tar.md5
BETA-Flashable_SuperSU-2.52
I now take it that the issue is my twrp says noble while I read not to use the noble kernel to use BeastMode. But I could be way off...
Man alive, I didn't know just how much I appreciated CF Auto Root until just now...
You probably already figured this out by now but follow the instructions and links in my thread. You should only reboot directly to twrp from download mode after flashing twrp btw in case you haven't figured it out by now.

Thank you for responding. I was able to get the factory ROM installed and working fine.

Root on stock is relatively simple.
TWRP + SuperSU only.
But as you saw, it's still easy to get it wrong.

Ok, so since I have flashed TWRP and SuperSU, and all it ever does it bootloop, would I be able to install TWRP, then flash MOAR on top of it? Then I would have a rooted MOAR if I understand correctly. My issue is that ive always had root accomplished before installing a custom ROM.
If all I have to do is flash twrp then SuperSU, I dont understand what I could be doing wrong.
But I'm going to take a look at your link you provided and see if I can't get root 1st.

Ok, so since I have flashed TWRP and SuperSU, and all it ever does it bootloop, would I be able to install TWRP, then flash MOAR on top of it? Then I would have a rooted MOAR if I understand correctly. My issue is that ive always had root accomplished before installing a custom ROM.
If all I have to do is flash twrp then SuperSU, I dont understand what I could be doing wrong.
But I'm going to take a look at your link you provided and see if I can't get root 1st.

Old habits are hard to break. A properly deodexed rom that is pre-rooted only requires twrp and a proper wipe before installing.
For rooting stock, it really is fairly simple. The instructions I provided are probably a little overly detailed but I had to cover as much as possible for those that have never done it before so it 'looks' complex but once you've done it a few times you will see that its really not that hard to do.

Thank you for pointing me to your thread. I was able to get root on my sons phone. Hard to believe the SuperSU was the problem... But it was... I was using the one from chainfires site, but yours worked when his created bootloops.
