What differences can we expect from the RTM release and the upcoming Mango release?

I would expect no difference. With new firmware and radio coming with the official rollout we may see a few hardware related things enabled that weren't enabled with just RTM (e.g. camera settings etc.)

It means users have tested all the features available with mango? So why so excitement on mango release dates? Why Microsoft said get away from home brewed apps and roms?

I'm looking forward more towards mango apps than the actual OS, but I suppose the only difference is going to be the radio and any carrier based apps...

os wise
nothing
firmware wise?
That's the difference. The OS is the same, but firmware update is where it is different. A bevy of devices currently running mango (save from the htc leaks) are running nodo firmware. No mango firmware yet.

At all these features available in RTM mango? If yes, what do you make out of the mention of remaining features of mango in the article?

Newb with Rom questions..

Before you guys flame me, i've already read a lot about the different roms, and i'm not coming asking for rom help.... I recently purchased an unlocked tilt with a custom rom already installed. I believe it is this rom... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=347879 I am going to change that rom and upgrade it to a much newer, and battery saving rom. When i was searching i came across this rom... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361544&highlight=extend+battery+life
I also came across this rom....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388947 Which rom in your opinion has better battery use, and is more stable?? If you dont think one of these are the best rom, which one would you suggest?? and finally, what rom are you using??
Thanks

no one can tell what's best for you. try out some different roms, that's the best way to tell whats best for you.
cant really suggest what u should use because its all based on personal prefs...i cant tell u which girl to go after as your wife or which house to buy or which car to buy...u have to test and see which one fits u most...and i'm using the L26 rom in my sigature
Nearly all of the ROMs posted here in the last two months are based on early leaked (unofficial) WM 6.1 builds. They are unofficial because they are still being debugged by HTC and the carriers. HTC is going to release an official 6.1 any day now and an at&t version is expected to follow shortly. Custom ROMs based on the official releases will be available within days of the official releases.
The last two unoficial at&t builds, 19209, 19213 (and all custom ROMS based on these builds) contain noticeable graphics performance improvements. The official releases will also have this improvement.
You could try one of the recent ROMS based on these builds now but you will want to move to something "official - based" once available, assuming you want to upgrade to WM 6.1
I've flashed half a dozen (or so) ROMs over the last two months but am currently on the stock at&t 19213.
Warning...this can be habit forming...
Enjoy!

Half right ! Microsoft has officially released WM 6.1 it is not " leaked. "
That is what 6.1 cooked roms are based on. Some carriers have already included it in roms for new phones and as updates.
It is rumored that a new rom with 6.1 will be available for the TyTn by the end of the month. The HTC rumor is that they will not upgrade the Tilt anytime soon, but other rumors say they will. Believe what you will
Microsoft oficially released WM 6.1 to manufacturers. Manufacturers must add another layer of software to integrate the OS to the hardware.Manufaturers also customize carrier specific models (i.e at&t Tilt) to an additional set of specifications that are ordered by the carrier. And so it goes...
See the link for a rom that is rumored to be an HTC official release for TyTn II. The rom is dated 5/2/08.

Here is the link to the latest leaked at&t version that HTC and at&T are developing for the Tilt.

Windows Mobile 6.5 Retail Release Confusion.

Perhaps someone can help me understand the situation with retail releases of windows mobile 6.5.
A lot of the roms here seem to be including the 6.5 release that has the big buttons at the bottom of the screen, instead of the cross in the top right hand corner, something that seems to have been in from around from version 23035 and up and a pretty important feature to help make windows 6.5 finger friendly. So why is it every single retail device i have seen online does not have this feature? What else is missing?
These are beta releases for wm6.5.1. It hasn't been released yet, hence beta. Wm6.5 is an official release.

Meaning what? That all the current crop of WM 6.5 devices being released will need to be upgraded to get these features. Assuming that the manufacturer decided to release an update?

Microsoft said a while ago that after 6.5 but before 7, there will be a version of 6.5 (6.5.1) with a GUI enhancements. These new builds you are seeing are the start of this update that will eventually come.

Anyone have any word on new builds of Mango coming soon?

Any news on when new Mango builds are coming?
Also, any news on tethering being added to future build of mango?
Nobody has any idea right now. We do know that beta 3 exists but it's for internal testing. If mango RTM comes out late August, I wouldn't be surprised to see it within a couple weeks.
For tethering, it won't be a native app in mango. I also am not sure if devs have access to an API to build one. Most phones have a method of doing it right now though.

Shouldn't tango beta be released to developers?

Tango is supposed to be released Q1 2012, so shouldn't beta be released by the end of this year? Or is Microsoft waiting for CES?
I got mango 7711 on my phone about 4 months before final 7720. Going by that time frame tango should be out for beta 1 but i haven't heard anything from microsoft about a tentative release schedule for the beta.
Anybody think tango is being delayed until a better chip is manufactured that doesn't kill battery life with the LTE radio? RIM is waiting till end of 2012 to release blackberry 10 because of the same problem with LTE. And i'm sure Apple is waiting as well.
Tango was never meant to be a huge upgrade over mango (that's Apollo), so i'm guessing its some features with mostly hardware upgrades such as LTE and dual core processors.

Maybe that's why. We didn't get NoDo early...

Didn't think about that, but you're right. Mango was big because the apps needed to be changed to work with instant resume and live tiles. If the apps don't need to be upgraded for tango, there really isn't a reason for msft to release the beta.
I think it will be available after details reveal on CES 2012
7740 Wasn't released to us either... Mango, like Windows8, needed apps to be recoded and recompiled... It made no sense to release it to devs with the general public because no apps would have been available. Tango doesn't represent any change in the way apps run, and I'm sure Microsoft has their own beta team testing it.
I wonder if there will be Georgian language support. Mango lacks it. It would be nice to read in Georgian in native apps.
Same question about Georgian language support
2012 International CES, January 10-13
thats when we'll find out

WP 7.8 Release?

Does anyone have any information on when WP7.8 will be available or if there is any source online to get our hands on it, so that porting may begin?
Here is an excellent article about the features one can expect in 7.8
Here's an Update wherein it is stated that RTM (Release to Manufacturing) is September while GA (General Availability) is November. ;-)
It will be released with the first WP8 devices.
They did mention that there will be a program that allows you access to the updates early. I'm not sure if Windows Phone 7.8 is included in that, or if its just Windows Phone 8 and higher.
Nokia lumia 900 gets WP7.8 for a couple of weeks, this is officialy confirmed by Nokia ana Microsoft .

During the Summit I have understood that this feature is only for WP8-updates and not for WP7.8 because this update is released by the carriers.... So, we will have to wait .... :-/
I understood that the new update route is one of those few new things that come with 7.8
WP 7.8 is for the 1st & 2nd gen of WP devices that could not upgrade to WP8, sort of consolation
Once Nokia releases the update for Windows Phone 7.8 for the Nokia Lumia 900 can we expect a port soon to other devices like the HD7 ? or do we have to wait till HTC or Tmobile officially announces it ? (which I do not wish for)

This is the Windows Phone 8 forum, not 7 :silly:
wp7.8 will be sent directly, not via providers. That means everybody should get this & get this the same date.
No, WP8 will receive subsequent updates 'over the air' but you have to have it to get that as I understand it!
AFAIK Nokia plans to release the Tango update (7.5) in the upcoming weeks, not the 7.8 update. We'll probably have to wait more especially given that MS is not very confident with the 7.8 performance as of now.
Our best bet is to wait for the Windows Phone 8 SDK coming late this summer. Chances are it will include a usable WP 7.8 build.
I don't understand why people are talking about "porting" 7.8 to older phones. Every phone that runs Mango will get the 7.8 update, regardless of age or carrier. They've said they're pushing this update out without carrier intervention.
Also, Nokia did say that the 7.8 update would be release "in the coming weeks." That could mean withing the next few weeks, or by the time Windows Phone 8 comes out. Those are both technically "in the coming weeks."

hey, according to multiple tech sites, the Windows Phone 7.8 will be released right after the WP8 has been outed in the market.

Well, I for one have an old HD2 which of course is excluded of the luxury of official updates. Also I thought it'd be more fitting to put in here than in wp7 forum because of similarity.. sorry if I was wrong there. Happy with the outcome so far. I wanted to make a platform for discussion regarding 7.8 release and that we got; )

No, this has been clearly said by Microsoft and followed up with big people who work with and are at Microsoft, you will ONLY get the new tile layout on the main page (to have the 3 size tiles) and nothing else.
Only other changes you could possably get will be in a App format(downloadable via the marketplace). Not a update. If you want more of the new stuff, you will have to BUY a WP8 device when it's released.
This has been said from Microsoft a few times now...

There was a update to that, they took it back.

That statement that you would get 7.8 on Nokia devices in a few weeks is INCORRECT, here is WPcentral's take on it...
http://www.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-78-update-available-weeks
It's TBA... So no one knows at this point...
Trust me, I wish it was true because if Nokia got it, we'd all get it, as I am sure someone will rip it to work on any device...
I have a Samsung focus v1.3 running a custom ROM. Will I be able to update to 7.8 when it comes out?
