want to root and overclock my ns4g without a ROM - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to root and overclock my ns4g but I don't want a ROM is this possible? I'm running 2.3.5 and I just came from a epic 4g, what is the safest kernel and speed? Thank you.

What do you mean you don't want a ROM?
You are running a stock ROM lol. However, you can continue to run it and flash kernels without using a custom ROM

you dont need setcpu to run some kernels on stock rooted

Yeah I meant non custom, ok just wanted to make sure because on my old epic you had to be careful about what kernel you used some for ext4 and some rfs, anyone recommend a fast kernel for a stock ROM?

Quick question about SetCPU

Does SetCPU do any good for my phone if I'm using a stock kernel? Right now, I'm running WeaponG2x with stock kernel.
Also, if I do need a custom kernel to use SetCPU, can someone recommend a good kernel?
Thanks.

You could underclock/undervolt and set profiles, but not overclock. There are only two OTA based kernels for G2x, Dragon or Faux.
Dragon:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246419 (I prefer this one)
Faux:

Quick and straight to the point, thanks so much. Oh, one more thing, what's the main difference between those two kernels?

Probably the only difference is which one your phone works best with. You should try them both out for a couple of days nd then stick with whichever u like the best.

I'm using a dragon version for CM7, very stable very solid.
For weapon you'll want to use faux's kernel. He has a thread in developement somewhere with his gingerbread, froyo, and weapon roms

[Q] Sensation chip is not on the list of SetCpu 2.2.4

Sensation chip is not on the list of SetCpu 2.2.4 even though the post say yes.
Can't find MSM8X60. And I can't change the speed. Maximum is only up to 528MHz no longer 1.5GHz... Help!
OK, first off, this should be in q and a section. Second, did you select autodetect?? I use setcpu regularly and always use the autodetect option.

Your kernel probably doesn't support it.
Which ROM/Kernel are you using?

This. Most custom kernels in here work just fine.

Yeah, you're most likely using a stock kernel that doesn't support over clocking and under clocking. Usually is the case when that happens with setcpu

Well, I'm using stock rom. There's no autodetect options for me to choose. If I want change back to normal frequency then how to do it?

Hi, I'm using stock rom. I must use custom rom to use the setcpu app?
I'd recommend flashing a custom rom, as you get far more options to choose from - more freedom as well. If it truly does become clocked at 500ish Mhz, just uninstall SetCPU and you should be set.

[Q] Kernel Quesion

Is there a kernel that works preferably one with OC/UV, that works with a completely stock phone, its rooted but i like the feel of stock so i havent flashed any roms yet.
By stock, do you mean stock Gingerbread? If so, I'd suggest Zen Arcade's Infusion-Z:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25724526
SGS Kernel Flasher from the Play Store is an easy way to flash the zImage on the phone.

[Q] Custom Kernel

Hi my skyrocket is currently running 4.0.3 ics leaked rom, and I was wondering if i could flash custom kernel on ics rom, or would I have to stock gingerbread to use custom kernel. I just do not want to get bricked etc. Thank you.
It depends on the ROM, if it's SKY ICS or some other modded Samsung rom, then you pretty much have to stick with stock, or do some research because I don't really know what Kernels are available for it. Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in...
If it's AOSP based (CM9, AOKP, Chimaira, etc), then the only other option I know of is InstigatorX's kernel, which seems to work quite well. Pick a stable version, since the latest has issues with the camera. The stock kernel for CM9 is also quite good, but the CPU governors added in Instigators are great for saving battery.

You can flash cymbaline. Don't try to flash instigator's cm9 kernal you aren't using an aosp rom. Cymbaline fits your deal nicely. You'll dig it.

I also use this kernel and in conjunction with System Tuner for OC/UV.

You dont need the app to use the kernel, but you need to have an unlocked bootloader, a custom recovery (maybe also a rooted phone).

Before installing faux kernel do a nandroid backup in recovery. If you're unsatisfied with faux kernel then restore your backup.

do you loose data when installing a custom kernel? what are the advantages of this kernel? I am enjoying the stock rom and want to stick with it, but don't know what I'm missing if I switch the kernel to Faux123. Already UL and rooted

No, you will not loose your data when flashing a new kernel.
Long story short, the advantages are a much more effecient and optimised kernel that will allow for better performance, battery life or a balance between the two depending on what your after and how you setup the kernel... Read, read and when you think you've read enough, read somemore!

Thank you for your reply,
I did read up on this kernel but the info I found wasn't for this device and I didn't know there was anything specific to the Moto G.
