[Q] Custom Kernel - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi my skyrocket is currently running 4.0.3 ics leaked rom, and I was wondering if i could flash custom kernel on ics rom, or would I have to stock gingerbread to use custom kernel. I just do not want to get bricked etc. Thank you.

It depends on the ROM, if it's SKY ICS or some other modded Samsung rom, then you pretty much have to stick with stock, or do some research because I don't really know what Kernels are available for it. Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in...
If it's AOSP based (CM9, AOKP, Chimaira, etc), then the only other option I know of is InstigatorX's kernel, which seems to work quite well. Pick a stable version, since the latest has issues with the camera. The stock kernel for CM9 is also quite good, but the CPU governors added in Instigators are great for saving battery.

You can flash cymbaline. Don't try to flash instigator's cm9 kernal you aren't using an aosp rom. Cymbaline fits your deal nicely. You'll dig it.

Razor's kernel is the Defuse kernel but yes, you can flash the different kernel over your current rom. But the Defuse kernel does appear to have a couple bugs in it so I wait wait a little bit.
thank you very much
if the android version is the same and they are for the same device it is very likely for the rom and kernel to be compatable. exceptions touch wiz roms need touch wiz kernels, aosp kernels need aosp roms, sense roms need sense kernels. there are some rare situations where a rom and kernel build need to match like some gingerbread versions for the i9000 dont work with kernels from certain other gb versions. but since we only have 2 firmware builds and they dont have a conflict between them you should be able to use any rom with any kernel unless the des did something wierd to get a feature working.

[Q] What's your favourite ICS ROM?

Hello NS community! I exchanged my Desire for my fiancee's NS and now I'm flash happy.
I intentionally did not ask what the BEST ROM was to avoid a flame war, so please share what you find to be your FAVOURITE ICS flavour.
Until now I tried CyberGR-MOD v1 but it was very unstable for me so I was unimpressed. Next up on the flash list are CM9 Alpha 18 and Peter Alfonso's ROM.
Suggestions?
Peter Alfonso ICS
Thanks, for now I'm running CM9 Alpha18 and seems to be quite stable.
I just flashed bixies' ROM last night and it seems to be very stable so far.
IMO, the real fun with Nexus S is the kernel, we have many great kernels for you to play with

Currently I'm using Matr1x-cfs_v14.0Matr1x-cfs_v14.0. OCed at 1460 and no FCs, no reboots, no freezes, just buttery smooth performance.
Slightly off-topic, but I have to say I'm terribly impressed withe the Nexus S - it's a very powerful device.

I've read good things about that ROM and I'll be sure to flash that next, if CM9 disappoints.

It has been feeling very smooth, at least in the few hours I've used it. We'll see how it goes.
AOSP+ and Matrix 14 cfs gives me a great combination of performance and battery life. I tried ICUP too and it gives great performance but battery life is better with Matrix.
So is CM9 smooth and stable enough to be used as my everyday ROM? Also, are there any posts or wikis about all the different kernels, guides on flashing and their pros and cons? My last dev device was a Blade and there weren't nearly as many different kernels and options available for that. Oh, and does CM9 come with a kernel..I don't need to flash anything else?

Yes CM9 comes with it's own kernel. It's a mod on the 3.0.8 kernel. CM9 been running on my phone for 6 days now without a single reboot and FC.

What I normally do is:
* do a full wipe (system, data, cache) if you are flashing a different ROM
* flash ROM first, reboot to make sure it runs properly
* flash kernel, wipe dalvik-cache (or also cache, just in case)
Always flash a ROM that says it supports your phone model. Also make sure that if you're using ICS ROM then flash an ICS kernel. On the other hand, if you're using GB ROM then flash a GB kernel.

Does Stock Jelly Bean work on Matr1x Kernel?

Hi,
I have installed Matr1x kernel. I am using Stock ICS Rom only. Will the New Jelly Bean Update.zip work.
Can i install using cwm.
Please advise me.
Regards,
asdf2020
It should flash through CWM, but keep in mind it'll overwrite your recovery and replace your kernel.

Does it will wipe my data/apps as well?
No. Everything will be the same. I flashed over ICS and everything was kept the same for me

For ****s-and-giggles, I threw the matr1x kernel on top of my 4.1.1 ota last night ... It didn't work.

Yea. My app settings stayed the same, but like I said, my kernel got replaced, which is expected. I don't use matrix though and seeing as the kernel sources vary, chances of it working are pretty slim, as seen above.

Your kernel will get replaced. I wouldn't recommend it because I've tried other kernels with the official OTA JB ROM and the experience wasn't as smooth. I have yet to try Matr1x kernel yet though.
No different versiĆ³n of Ndroid not supported at least yet ;D
Lets just say hes workin on it i would expect
So......official JB 4.1 won't work on my Matr1x kernel

Latest version of Zeus/ GB kernels

So I've been running the unofficial ICS and jellybean ROMs and have run into some problems. To avoid that, I'm going to return to stock .3.6 and just in GB ROMs. Zeus treats the battery kindly, so I'm going to run that. However, I can't find the latest version. I can only find v6.0.. the original.
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412957
I would like to run the latest version of v6.
In addition, I'm looking to run a good GB kernel. The defuse kernel sounds like it will accommodate Zeus very nicely. I found the defuse kernel v1.4. Will this kernel be compatible with Zeus?
Thanks

defuse kernel is froyo. you'll be in a boot loop treat if you flash it over zeus.
zeus 6 may have been on the infusion kernel by bedwa,..i can't remember...
the choices you can run with zeus: uclb3 stock, zen's a1600 or b1400, entropy's dd.

V6.0 is not the initial release....that is like the 6th release...actually more then that if I remember correctly there were also some "x.x" releases as well...you probably won't find the latest as dman took it down and requested no one make mirrors...because I guess people were being dumb and complaining

Hmmmm. I was looking for v6.x.. just could not find them. That would make more sense after what u said. I know there were previous versions of Zeus, like v5 for instance. So over time the bugs should be pretty much worked out. V6 sounds great!

Rom+Kernel advices.

I want a stable rom and kernel. The camera should be able to take 8MB pics and capture 1080p video. If possible I want JB or ICS.
please help. I have been seeking for rom and kernel for a long time. The developers does not give understandable specs like openly for me...

official CM 7.2 is my recommendation.
ICS and JB are not fully working and since you want a stable one I'd stay away from those.
Alright then I guess I need to tell like '' the most stable ROM and Kernel among the JB and ICS. Guys please help me! Camera should work 1080p

The only way that will work is on Adampk's and Mazout360's CM10.1 Rom Build 7 which is the only rom that has full HWA to make the camera work properly. Downside is that the Radio (Cellular Network) will NOT work. This means no calls, SMS, data, etc. Anything to do with your Mobile Network will not work.

If you have problems with Faux kernels try Trinitys. I could never get Faux's kernels to play nice with my phone and while they ran smoother the random reboots, black screens and having to keep phone from sleeping just killed it for me.
This was oh stock voltage as well.

guys I think the best rom is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420972 that one for me! At least the developer tells the specs of the rom clearly... I just did not understand how to install v6supercharger, it seems hard to do.
I currently have KashaMalaga (jb 4.1.1.) with harsh kernel 1.4 GHZ everything's looking pretty stable except camera ( no 1080p ) well I'll go with that for a while than maybe install above rom and hopefully v6supercharger
I installed Hellfire cm7 GB 2.3.7. with v6 supercharger. All fine but screen sensitivity is really low.

I'm using CM7.2 stable with Wolfscript and Harsh kernel and my phone is flying! Very stable and very fast (after Wolf script), though battery life has taken a hit after running the script. My next flash will be Mazout360's dual-boot CM10.1 unofficial with a GB ROM as my daily (still haven't decided which - they're all so good! )
