TB Build Quality - Thunderbolt General

As much as I hate to rant, I don't know where else would be appropriate to do so, so ignore this if you don't care.
I have own htc devices since the ppc6700. I have owned an iPhone and a Moto droid, but the rest htc. I have always found htc to build a quality product. I love the phone internals and gingerbread, oh and the kickstand has become imperative, but I feel like this is the worst quality htc handset I have ever owned. Since launch day I'm on my 5th phone. All manufacturer warranty exchanges. I had 2 recessed power buttons, one recessed volume rocker, and a broken wifi. The power button is again begining to recess more every day, on all of my tb's the metal finish on the kickstand flaked of.....I mean is anyone else kind of disappointed here? Have I just had ****ty luck? I am so gentle with these things I really don't understand what's going on.

Still on my first phone no screen cover, no phone case, rooted and flashed many ROMS and radios. So far so good, holding strong till Incredible HD

Had mine a month. Had one shut down that required a battery pull to get the phone to come on. Kickstand coating is just beginning to peel. Not happy about that, but been a good phone otherwise.

Thought I would add that my brother bought one and has had his about three Weeks. He's sending his back due to constantly losing data coverage in the same area I'm in and his phone vibration rarely works. Stock Roms for both of us. And his kickstand is warped, but he keeps his in his pocket and I use a clip-on.

Funny this post popped up.
My power button went kaput tonight.

I'm on my 5th t bolt as well, horrible build quality. My latest phone runs great but the screen has a green hue to it and the power button was messed up out of the box. All five of mine have had messed up power buttons (either out of the box or within a month) a retarded proximity sensor and the speakers and mics are poor quality and make this horrible as a phone (luckily I don't talk much) and one of them wasn't stable at 1 ghz, I had to underclock it to 800 mhz to stop the shut downs.
I got this phone because I know most of their phones are great, but even people I know who were big time HTC fans switched over to the charge. I really don't want to swap for a Samsung or LG but thats all they will switch my phone for, I wish they would switch it for a Motorola to get me through until my upgrade.

I'm at about 4 months or so with the TBolt and no issues what-so-ever. I have flashed numerous ROMs, kernels and radios over and over and no issues there either. Only thing is the kickstand has a few little flakes coming off but whatever it's a phone not an antique to be worried about. I actually think the build quality is quite nice and I like how it feels sturdy in my hands not glass like the jesusphone or plasticy like other Android phones I have had....ATRIX!!!!

only problems I've had on our 2 bolts is peeling of the kickstand. It's not hd2 build quality, but not bad. I don't like the plastic feel of the samsung devices.

I just called to have my 6th t bolt sent to me. I shouldn't have given up my Droid X, that was a great phone.

All the tbolts are buggy. Why send one back?

The HD2 has to be the best, most beautifully built phone I've ever owned.
Have you guys been offered any other phones in exchange? I've gone through 3 replacements and they haven't offered me any other phones.

I have two original TB's and havent had any problems with either. Maybe its the luck of the draw. I am also very nice to my phones. As for well built, the OG droid will never be beat.

Cause when your battery pops, or your earpeace is horribly distorted, or your WiFi doesn't work, or your proximity sensor is wiggin out, or your headphone jack doesn't work, you return it. I would love to get my hands on a thunderbolt without any issues, new or referb.

Me too, or a Bionic.
I think the reason I keep getting crappy phones is because these refurbished/certified phones suck and was someone else's reject before we get them.

Yea, I've had no problems on the functionality/software front. My problem is this is the most I've ever paid for a device on contract so I refuse to use one with a messed up power button, or a flakey kickstand, or wifi radio that's broken. I only bought this phone because:
1. Wanted unlimited data
2. Wanted 4g
3. Good Past experiences with HTC
I planned to upgrade to the bionic and give this phone to the fiance, but it took too long and now I'm not impressed with it. I love the experience and functionality of this phone. I like the charge too, but the only thing that pisses me off about the charge is that the browser is crippled. Its so laggy that it would make me embarresed to show my buddies with an iPhone something on the web.
With all this being said, I think the droid/nexus prime will be my next device. Reason being is that google has official stated that android will be focusing on OMAP compatibility in ice cream sandwich development, and I have a feeling the vigor will ship with a Qualcomm chipset. That combined with my thunderbolt experience. Still, I see no other devices on verizon currently that catch my interest.

I have no idea how some of you go through so many devices. It really blows my mind. I've had no issues at all with this thing.

I'd love to have a Bionic, but I'm not using an upgrade for it. They told me I could do an early upgrade since I've had so many problems but I feel I should be entitled to a decent phone since I already paid them $270 for this pos. I wasn't suppose to get an upgrade until may, and I want to hold out until then to get a phone that'll hold me over for 2 years but I need a phone to get me through until then and all they offer is Samsung and LG which I stay away from (phones only, I love my Samsung tv and I keep eyeing a galaxy tab). The only reason I don't switch to the charge is poor signal, all of my old Samsung phones had poor signal and most reviews I read about the charge mentioned that as one of the cons. If the browser is the only thing holding back from a charge why don't you try a 3rd party browser?

Google ... another mess???

I was really excited when I heard the rumours about the nexus S along with 2.3.
Now it's been released I am extremely disappointed. It is no different from the Samsung galaxy S, which in my opinion was not a good device to start with, with it's cheap plastic design, lag problems and GPS issues etc. They even dropped the SD card slot which was the final nail in the coffin for me. Didnt implement hspa+ and dropped the bluetooth 3.0.
So for now i'll be sticking to my HTC desire with a custom 2.3 rom when it becomes available.
I suppose 2.3 comes with some welcomed features but we will have to wait till honeycomb to see the full UI update i guess.
What are your thoughts? Will the nexus S be your next device?
Let me know what you think.
I don't know but HTC is also full of problems too, i hope people realize that HTC uses cheap crap into their phones, the nexus one's awful touch screen, tiny speakers, dust under the screen, power button problems. I don't understand why people praise HTC so much i mean their warranty isn't stellar, having to send your phone for 3 weeks isn't very appealing.
Galaxy S to start with is already a better phone than the nexus one, the GPS works and everything works in the vibrant.

My thoughts are that people who complain about Google not releasing the phone of their dreams have missed the point of the Nexus S
I think:
No SD card= no problem, It's a phone after all guys, if you need music I would get an iPod, I use Pandora or groove shark anyways...I can't even fill my 8Gb card as it is!
Plastic Build= This is not a problem for me either because it's googles phone, i bet it will feel solid after all and I like the classy black gloss look so im biased anyways...
No HSPA+ = I don;t think many people are actually getting up to the 7mb anyways, but in the near future I think T mobile will be updating it to a whopping 21Mb so this is a bit upsetting but I only get edge at my house anyways so I'm okay with this too
This is the ONLY fully supported GOOGLE PHONE as of now remember. The nexus one is slowly dying
That's why I will have mine on the 16th!
Not sure why so many people complain about the Galaxy S line of phones. I have the Fascinate and I am not getting lag, the plastic case is plenty durable, my GPS also works fine.

EXACTLY i held a fascinate and it felt so solid! I just don't understand it....and HSPA+? You can still get up to 7.2 MB, but that isn't good enough? I mean that flies on my Nexus one already! I dont need any more speed.

lets keep it real, GOOGLE missed on the N1 because you couldnt walk into a national retailer, touch it, feel it, try it.
Best Buy Mobile is one of the best places to get a smartphone if not the best, they certainly have the most and best prices. rebates anyone? any retailer is going to have idiots who dont know what theyre talking about...trust me it would be worst in a WalMart, Shack, or Target for example.

I'm not praising HTC at all. I don't agree that HTC uses cheap crap in their phones. HTC's design and build quality is one of the best in the industry. I do agree no phone is perfect, Some HTC's do have problems like the lack of a good quality speaker and the multi-touch issues on the N1. However the new HTC line up looks promising such as the G2/desire z and desire HD etc.
When I was playing on my friends galaxy S I did notice the lag issue and GPS problems. To me the actual build quality seemed cheap. However I will say, great processor and internal hardware, with that gorgeous AMOLED screen. That's just my experience of the device.

I think you might be missing the point I am trying to make.
I wasn't expecting the phone of my dreams, far from it. My point is that the specs are almost identical to that of the galaxy S. With exception to the NFC and gyro of course.
The reason why expandable memory is a deal breaker for me, amongst other things, is the fact they are removing a feature, I know for some people this will be fine, but it reminds me of the iphone and how apple removes basic features, in their closed system.
The nexus S could have been great, but it was rushed for release just for the Christmas season.
Above all that here in the UK its going to cost a whopping £550 on launch day!
I think the nexus S will be fine for most, but there's nothing revolutionary about it.
The last I heard about a "revolutionary" phone was from steve job's mouth. Just sayin. I don't think google is saying this is a revolutionary device. Nexus named phone just means its Google's baby.
Some people just have too much expectation.

I don't agree on making a general comment like HTC rocks and Samsung sucks or vice versa. In gadgets world, you have to take each product and review it as it is. About build quality , I have a cheap Samsung slide phone and it has been taking some awful falls for a while, on hard floors and streets and although it's fully made of plastic, it amazed me how it's still holding up with just scratches and it's performing just like the first day I got it. There is no one device that can fit all people, everyone has something to look for in his phone. For me, NS fits me the most now. You might have some other specifications that you are looking for too, so this might not be your phone.
Couple of key points for me...
Not realy '****ed' up per se, just dropped the ball on a couple of points:
NO HSPA+= No purchase for me, my next phone has to have it (currently with HD2)
No HD video recording. WTF!? I'm sure someone will unleash it in a custom ROM or hack, but off the bat, just plain doopid!
I was almost there until I found out those 2 points. I'd rather get a MyTouch 4G.

No 4G, No HD Video, No SD Slot. These are staples in current cell phones. Is it that hard for google to put in a phone? NO PURCHASE.

Thunderbolt vs Droid X

Now that some of you have had your Thunderbolts a while now, I dont know how many had a droid x before. but for those of you that did was it a huge upgrade or what. I've been putting off upgrading but the urge wont go away because I want 4g. I'd probably have to buy it used on craigslist. Is it worth it? Reliable? Sense vs Blur etc. Any opinions appreciated.
Jeff
Bro I had the same feelings as u but I jumped on the Bolt a day after release and let me tell u its the best decision ever. The phone is super fast and 4g speeds are hell of amazing. I def recommend u get the tbolt personally there isnt a better phone you an get from verizon other than the bolt and their wont be for months. I say go for it you will be happy you did.
I dont know if its a huge jump but Im not looking back. My dx was phone had good Roms but was ready for something different. Must have been what I was looking for because Im sticking with it.
My wife got a DX last year. I never liked it, and I really tired too. I stuck it out with my Touch Pro 2 until about 3 weeks ago, when I finally got my TBolt. What a great phone this is. I am really glad I stuck with HTC. I like the build quality, and the overall feel of the phone. I have used HTC phones since the 6700, and the TBolt does not disappoint.
Now, on the flip side, my wife HATES my TBolt. Her DX died on her a week ago, and we had to get a refurb. She used my phone several times over a day and a half, and she said she would never own a TBolt. Guess my wife will be getting a Bionic for Christmas!
Rob
I've had the D1, D2, DX, Fascinate, and now the Thunderbolt. None of the phones I had in the past compare accept for the D1 because of the developer support. This is the first time I have been all the way happy with a phone purchase in my life. The funny thing is that I got the Thunderbolt just to lock in 4G thinking it wasn't that much of an upgrade. Wow I was so wrong.
I've got a TB, my wife has an X.
I absolutely love my TB, even with it's battery life being less than optimal. I can't stand her X, I think Blur is the ugliest UI ever.....
I don't know if this is a totally fair opinion since she won't let me root hers, and I'm rooted running das BAMF 2.1......
That aside, even when I was stock, I felt that her X lagged a lot more than my TB.....probably due to my extra RAM.
It's an upgrade in some areas and a downgrade in others. The only reason I didn't go back to the X was 4g.

I had a Droid X before. It was a better phone. While the Thunderbolt is noticeably faster and snappier, but the DX has better build quality and is much more reliable. In addition to that, it could go 2 days easily on a charge without installing a ROM or turning everyting off.
Honestly, if it wasnt for the 4G capability, the TB would be a pretty "meh" phone.
I loved my X. It was like a member of my family. I've been a Moto guy since the StarTAC but I can safely say I do not regret going with the Bolt for one second. It's a different experience altogether but there is a lot of fun to be had with the Bolt.
I am also a big Moto guy but I do like my Thunderbolt. The screen is much better and I don't find myself missing those extra 54 pixels too much anymore. The one thing I hate about the Thunderbolt is the plastic body. The materials used in the DX are much better but the polish of HTC seems much better than Moto. For example the phone doesn't start to overheat for no reason or reboot for no reason (at least mine doesn't). Also the headphone jack feels solid and I really don't think it will break like the one on my DX.
Thanks for all the opinions, ill give myself two weeks or so to make the switch. Funny you brought up the headphone jack since I use my phone for music alot. It cuts out if I move a certain way while working. It just started doing that a few weeks ago, and does so with 3 different sets of headphones. Im rooted/deodexed/overclocked and was running liberty. I dont mind the setup besides 3g and now the hassle of returning to stock and then getting one of their crappy refurbished x's that my girlfriend has gotten 3 of by now. (they ended up being worse than her original she hated)
It seems that build quality and reliably are the two most missed things about the X. The X is half the weight but it feels like a tank compared to the Thunderbolt. there are a few things that are a major pain for me on the tbolt like when I long press in any browser I get the wrong pop up unless I zoom in (I'm a tab browser so this is really annoying.) I never had a problem with the headphone jack on the X in 10 months, but I do on the Thunderbolt in just 2 months, along with a now recessed power button. At first I didn't like the tbolt screen as much, now I've changed sides, I think this depends on which one your use to. All in all I like my tbolt but I would gladly give it up for the next Motorola 4g phone , once its rooted.
Edit: Battery life is almost as good on my tbolt running Das BAMF Stripped 1.8 as my X with ApeX or Liberty.
I came from the Dinc and my wife has the DX, I had the option to trade my Dinc for the X when it first came out but didn't. I have never been very impressed with Moto phones. I didn't like the feel of it in my hand. I really like the TB but I'm a little unimpressed with the support we have received since they screwed up the last OTA. If they will release GB 2.3.4 I will be tickled pink with this phone. I have played around with my wife's DX a bit but I just don't like it. The things I don't like about the TB are the battery & not having the latest software. The 4G rocks though!
Seems like people are a little blind to brand loyalty. Hmmmm build quality and reliability, Last I checked the Thunderbolt is solid as hell. Remember all of the problems the X had when it came out and how long it took to fix even with rooting? Remember all of the random freezing? The only knock I would give the thunderbolt is that it didn't come with 2.3 out of the box, but that doesn't matter because I'm running it rite now.
Edit: I almost forgot that some people aren't happy that the Thunderbolt is single core. Well as long as the real life performance stays close to dual core phones for while like it is now then that argument doesn,t hold up
I couldn't bring myself to buy the X, it looked too much like a calculator. On design alone the Tbolt wins out IMHO. Having said that the Thunderbolt is the best phone I have every had. Bamf GB 2.1 remix 2.0 radio

I agree that the Tbolt is pretty "meh" out of the box, but a custom rom turns it into a completely different beast. Yes, that is true about custom roms on any phone, which is why I wouldn't consider a Moto Bionic or Droid Charge or LG Revolution. The Tbolt developer community is outstanding.

The Thunderbolt is far from solid. Most (not all) have random reboots, the only time I had any with the X was when I overclocked too much. I don't remember any freezing problems when I got the X or many of the problems, especially ones that couldn't be fixed with root, but I got it 10 days after release so I'm not sure of any problems in the first week. The only problem I remember was how slow the X could be at times, but root and autokiller fixed that. Hardware wise (build quality) my X never gave me problems, but some people hat problems with the headphone jack, all the other problems were minimal. With my thunderbolt the headphone jack is already giving me problems, I have dead pixels and I now have a flush power button. I will be getting another soon it just sucks that I have to get a refurbished phone to replace my new phone. If it happens again (the power button seems to be a big problem for many people) I'll request another Motorola phone, I really miss the great reception and call quality my MOTO phones have had. I will never use a LG or Samsung again, I have had several crappy phones from them. The thunderbolt hasn't turned me off of HTC but I'd rather wait until their hardware matches the quality of their software (even though I don't like sense, it is the best stock UI other than vanilla android) and Motorola's software can be fixed by devs to match their hardware quality.

This is a nice feature, I'm not sure why other manufactures aren't using this. Maybe all the manufactures will start using this with their next line of phones.

So, I got my Bionic yesterday and...

So, I got my Bionic yesterday and, to be honest, I miss my Thunderbolt. As much as I love HTC phones, I've always thought Moto had better build quality. That is not the case with this phone. It doesn't feel as well made as my OG Droid, Droid X, or Thunderbolt. It is a snappy little device, but I miss the Sense UI and it's easy Facebook integration. So, now I'm just waiting on the Vigor or Prime in the next few months and I'll be out of the Bionic.

I wonder how many people feel like you do?
I have never seen a better example of "The grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence" than when it comes to people and phones.
I have always been shocked at how many times some people on here swap phones and get them off contract at full price or add lines just to have a newer phone.
I'm mostly just grateful I don't have a Blackberry running a crippled OS like BBOS 4 or 5 anymore. Compared to that, even having a older phone like the Incredible or Moto Droid 1 would be preferable.
The overall return on satisfaction from swapping a pretty new Android phone to a slightly newer Android phone just doesn't seem as long lasting as a big leap like going from a Blackberry to Android to me.
Bionic is fast. Really fast. This does not make up for:
Cheap feel.
Kiddy look with painted on buttons.
Mesh pattern on screen. It is BAD.
Meh battery. I didn't see much improvement.
Locked bootloader.
Horrible software. It looks pretty but the functionality isnt there.
I had an X. I loved the build quality and the LED's and the intensity of the vibrate. All things which the Bolt lacks, minus the build quality. My old X is sitting in my desk drawer and I don't miss it.
I think the UI has a lot to do with how I feel. I've learned to live without LED's. I had the moto A630 about 4 or 5yrs back. I loved that phone, too. I'm HTC, from here on out though.

Couldn't agree more. After being an Atrix owner I'm over Motorola. The phone felt cheap as hell and the locked bootloader was annoying. Add that to the fact the qHD screen was very disappointing I chose to never buy Motorola again unless they put a device out that proves me wrong.
I'm sticking with the TBolt until the Prime hits VzW!

Exactly!! Luckily, I don't pay for cell phones or I'd be a little more upset than I am. I'm going to weigh my options between the Vigor and the Prime when they hit the market.

Absolutely agree. You listed exactly every issue I have had with this phone. Even the extended battery barely helps with heavy use on 3G. I must say other than the thinness, lightweight, and dual core speed this device has turned out to be a great dissappointment (incomparable to the Galaxy SII). Also, I no longer trust Motorola's UI due to it's lack of basic features such as seperate notifications for e-mail accounts and syncing only existing contacts with Facebook. If the ThunderBolt had a dual core CPU, even to this day I would call it the best device on Verizon (I'll deal with the extended battery if I have to). I'm definitely switching to the next flagship Verizon device. At this point, my only decision here is Samsung Galaxy Prime, HTC Rezound (Vigor), or the LG LU6200 (Revolution 2?).

Yeah, I dropped in a VZ store when I was at a mall last week. I messed around with all of the phones there, including the Bionic, and was very disappointed with them all. The Bionic is overall nice, but something is off with the screen. Despite it being newer, it seems to have poorer quality than a relatively mediocre TB screen. Especially up close.
Samsung has a good rep, and admittedly I am eyeing the Prime...However the Charge is just a POS. It feels like a kids toy in your hand and looks ridiculous.
I loved LG flip phones back in the day...but they are far behind in the smart phone arena. That's all there is to it.
For all of us who nervously bought the TB months ago instead of waiting for the Bionic...Looks like we made the right choice. I managed to drop mine in a lake and revive it, but the speakers are shot. So I am looking for an upgrade. Haven't seen anything worthwhile yet, hoping the Prime is decent. Supposedly it will have a metal frame, which I loved on the OG droid.
The bionic is nice... screen is lackluster but speeds are definately better. I am torn between better service or nicer screen. May send my bionic back, just not sure yet.
I returned my Bionic after 4 days, the straw that broke the camel's back for me was an annoying feedback when using my earbuds

I wish I could use my ear buds with my t bolt. Either the audio jack was messed up out of the box or within a couple weeks of use the left side output stops working, all 6 have been like this. This is one of the reasons I want a new Motorola. The Bionic has the noise but at least it isn't a broken jack, I think it'll be fixed in a future firmware, or custom Rom.
All 6?

Not trying to be a **** here but why do you even post here anymore? It seems lately all you do is bash HTC or the Thunderbolt and love all over Motorola and the Bionic. You know there is a Bionic forum right?
Oh and for the record I'm still on my first TBolt and have had no hardware issues at all.
I've got a slightly bent patch cable in my car that will only work if turned in one way, otherwise the left side drops out. That's probably the issue.

I've argued with this guy a lot. I don't know how to explain his experience. I went to BlackBerry for a while because of Motorola devices. I literally couldn't replace them as fast as they broke.

Agreed. I've heard way too many people claim Motorola makes great devices with excellent build quality. Then explain the Atrix to me then for one. I owned that phone and it felt like a plastic POS toy my 4 year old would play with. Every HTC phone so far I've owned or played with felt sturdy and durable.

Because I have a t bolt and not a bionic, I haven't said anything about the bionic except that it seemed fast and smooth for the 10 I used one in the store and that I would prefer that over my t bolt. I do talk about how good Motorola phones have been for me in the past (several razr's, krazr's, ad an X) but nothing about a bionic because I haven't owned one and can't honestly give my opinion. I would be fine with the t bolt if I could just yr one without hardware issues. I used to rave about the t bolt (for 2 weeks) and a couple people bought them because I recommended them, they now have charges' after several faulty t bolts but I refuse to own a Samsung or LG, that's why I still have a t bolt

Ahh ok. Well anyways seems like you and your friends have bad luck though. I know a few people other than myself who are all on TBolt #1 and love it and have had no issues. One of them was a Charge owner who despised his battery life. It literally drained faster than I have ever seen a battery drain. This happened for the first 4 days he owned it with basically nothing installed (former BB owner wasn't used to Android yet). I'm sure there are defective bolts out there just like there are defective everything out there though. I personally think Motorola is overrated and won't purchase another product of theirs.

Looking to buy triumph but need opinions and feedback

Hello all, I've been with virgin mobile for about 2 years now and I've owned the LG otimus v and HTC wildfire s, I currently own HTC wildfire s and I'm not liking it, I'm thinking of buying the triumph. So my question is how do you like the triumph? What is the good and the bad? Should I buy the triumph or wait for new virgin mobile phones to come out? I ask here cause members here no phones more then regualr internet reviews so I want to ask the people that no this phone in and out
NookColor Cyanogenmod 7.1 "Overclocked"
Well, I have to say I have a love/hate thing going on with my MT.
I would say my biggest disappointment is battery life. I know Android doesn't get great life, but out of the box, this thing will last maybe 5 hours in your pocket. I use juice defender and can get about 15 hours in 1 charge with medium-light use.
Reception is a little spotty sometimes, I get about 80-95dbm everywhere I go. When I had my OV I would get 75-85dbm.
One thing I really do like about it though is I have never had any major issues with software. Hardly anything ever FC'd on me.
And the screen size and resolution is pretty nice, nothing to really jaw dropping, but way better than the OV.
Overall, I am happy I made the switch. Aside from my displeasure with Virgin Mobile, this is a pretty decent phone.
If you have any more questions, I'll be happy to try to answer them.
Sent from my Triumph using Tapatalk
Well I have the MT, although I switched to T-mo, because where I am VM service isn't the greatest. So I have a MT4GS, so my opinions might be b bit biased because of that although I have had the triumph longer...
Good: Fairly fast processor, flash support, led flash on camera, gorilla glass screen, 4.1" screen, HDMI out support, lots of dev support, virtually unbricakble, can record in "720p".
Bad: ****ty touchscreen that barely recognizes 2 touches, VM speeds aren't that great (at least for me), blue tinted screen (at least on mine and other people have complained about it), regular lcd screen, capacitive buttons, no dedicated camera keys, speakers aren't that great, screen will sometimes be whitewashed or graphically screwed up (turn screen off and on and its fixed), Touchscreen ignores touches at times, rebranded, the 720p capture isn't that great mainly this and pictures are because of a POS camera sensor.
It may seem like there are lots of bads, but they really aren't that major if you don't play a whole lot of games, because this touchscreen is not made for that. Its ultimately up to you to choose. VM may or may not come out with a phone anytime soon that has equal or better specs than the MT, so if you want to wait you can, but the MT isn't all that bad. I've had mine for a few months and rooted it, installed custom roms, etc. My main problem is where I live I get horrible service on my phone and with T-mo I get a near perfect signal and 4G! Its definitely a upgrade from the OV (I used to own one), the wildfire its an upgrade in some aspects I haven't owned it so I could only tell you on paper its better.
Great info both of you, thanks to you two my mind has been made up and I will get the triumph, perhaps when the price will go down a bit, I just bought the wildfire s so I'm gonna wait a bit, but hopefully soon I will be over in this part of xda

Ok well those guys aren't wrong, but my Triumph has all the issue's that many people have reported maybe it's because i bought it when it first came out. Anyway my Triumph has crap reception but theres an app for that lol, also some roms make my phone hot as hell & the battery charging sucks, sometimes it won't charge & i have to go through all this bull**** to get it to charge again. On the other hand i would never go back to the Samsung Intercept this phone is a beast when set up right so i guess it's a love hate relationship for me & the Motorola Triumph.
O I see, I'm sure its way better then my wildfire s....god I hate my wildfire s, Idk y virgin mobile would even allow this to be sold to there customers

that bad huh ? To be honest i think it might be my phone my wife has one & hers seems to be good, so i guess it's a crap shoot on if you get a good one or a bad one.
That's true! The virgin mobile HTC wildfire s has a diffrent design back door so you can't buy extended batterys and hard to find nice cases, all the good stuff is on the gsm phones (tmobile) phone feels cheap, i can't stand sense roms bad battery life to small lol and it goes on....

What phone of VM's isn't under construction? I think the only solid android phone they had was the OV all the others seem to have some major problems at times.

Yea seems like it. The only phone I didn't have any problems with (besides VM's network being slow as hell), was my rumor touch. Then when the OV cam out I didn't have any major problems. The MT doesn't have major problems on my end, but it does have a lot of minor problems that shouldn't be there. Not to mention a touchscreen that barely recognizes 2 touches on both the MT and the OV. That's one thing I hated about them.
Have you removed the crappy stock screen protector ? Not the peel off one that's on it right out the box. Did this to mine & had Ghost Armor put on it & now the touch response it fantastic.

And it still has touch issue's huh ? I guess add it to the list of BS this phone can provide us LOL. On the other hand i had zagg protector on my triumph too, Ghost Armor is better & guaranteed for life.
Ya I was thinking about selling my wildfire s to go back to the optimus v, although I don't like the wildfire s but that's only my opinion, I'm not telling any one not to buy it but just my thoughts of why I don't like it, but if some want to try the wildfire s give it a shot

zagg is garaunteed for life too. And its a hardware issue. The digitizer is a pos either that or the phone just can't track the fingers either way if you put both fingers together on the same horizontal area the axis snap together tel you move further apart. Get a visual touch test app and you'll see what I mean.

Considering Galaxy S3 - Looking for owner input

I need a new phone. My Galaxy Nexus is shot... It was my first Samsung phone though so I'm a little gunshy due to the problems I have had. I am trying to decide if I should go with the Galaxy S3 or wait for the Motorola Razr Maxx or HD that is supposedly coming soon.
Problems I had with GNEX
Data Drops - known problem, I put up with it, but it was annoying. Data would drop and then take min to reconnect, sometimes few times a day
Screen cracked two places - First phone I ever cracked the screen, but much larger screen then I had before (Dinc). Phone still usable but annoying. Both phones I'm considering have the Gorilla Glass so I assume this wont be an issue
USB Charging port - the final straw, the port went bad. GNex sometimes thinks it is charging when not plugged in and switches every few seconds causing the display to come on constantly and kill my battery within two hours from a full charge. Other times I have to plug in and out just to get it to charge overnight. I know the USB board can be replaced but seriously, not putting money into this phone. I'm worried the GS3 has the same USB charging problem board???
Google Wallet - Verizon blocked it on GNex and GS3... I assume they will block on Razr??? I am rooted so I was able to install the APK but it was always hit or miss as far as using wallet... only worked about 50% of the time. It would connect but then say the transaction did not go thru. I really want to use NFC.
How does the rooted ROM community view each phone? Will the Razr have as many custom ROMs? I will Root whatever phone I get.
The Razr Maxx's aren't out yet so can't tell how they hold up... The GS3 worries me most with the USB charging port and the above issues I had with the Samsung line...
Any comments appreciated. I have an upgrade avaible now so I don't have to wait, but I can limp thru the day with the Gnex plugged in at work a lot so if the Razrs are worth waiting for I can... unless they're not expected till January, but they claim BEFORE the holidays so I assume November?
Also, are there any phones I'm missing? I liked the Dinc and HTC Sense (I know... I know... ) but no HTC phones seem to have NFC and the flagship is not avail on Verizon. I need to stay on Verizon. I will root.
Thanks,
Jim
First i must say the GS3 is MUCH better than the GNex and i haven't had any data drops so far, the screen seems fine but as always be careful with it. I can't say much about the port because i've never heard of that going bad on anything before. Now about rooting and custom roms. From what i can see the GS3 will have a wide arrange of custom roms and support for awhile. The Razr Hd and Razr Maxx Hd will get support but i doubt it will come near as much as the Gs3 as the Gs3 is much more popular than any other android phone. Google Wallet is also blocked on all Verizon phones. Also i personally think the Razr Maxx Hd looks awesome but i already got a gs3 so thats that. Hope this helped your decision.

Spotty data and drops all over the place here... coming from all htc devices it's horrible... that being said.. the phone is very nice n fast but if u can't live with the crappy Samsung radios anymore I'd say wait.
Google wallet can be fixed via rooting.
Sent from my unlocked VZW Galaxy SIII
I live in an area where I have 4g LTE everywhere so I can't say anything bad about the radio cause I have no issues with mine nor did I have issues with My Gnex (as far as the radio)... I would say that Samsung makes THE most cheapest phones out there as far as parts and build quality but I still LOVE my phone for some reason.... Maybe cause it's just fast as hell and some of the downfalls don't affect me but I will tell you that you had better make sure that you get a solid S3 NEW cause if and when it does fail their refurbs are a JOKE and I think I am on my fourth Verizon refurb cause they keep sending me garbage but I finally have one that I "think" is going to be good minus the power button being loose as hell but I think every S3 I have had has a loose power button... Just know that the bootloader is unlocked and if you go to another phone it's gonna be locked until these kickass devs over here figure it out... And as far as development goes, I am in LOVE!! Sooo many options with my S3's and I don't see it stopping anytime soon... Read the forums and make a wise decision but I don't regret getting this phone I think I have just been cursed by Verizon.... Just please don't buy an iPhone.... LOL Have a great day!
Coming from a Droid X (rooted) to a GS3 (not rooted yet) can't really complain. In Phoenix coverage is very good, even along desolate hwy's and out in the desert far from anything. Just recently drove across country and used Sirius/XM 90% of the way and made a ton of calls. XM app only dropped out 3 times, in some very remote areas of hwy. Didn't drop a single call and sound quality was good, even traveling at 75 mph. Sent a lot of SMS with Pictures taken along the way, all w/o problem.
Will say that inside of buildings here in PHX, I do see slightly lower signal strength than my Droid X. It's not a deal breaker as the structures I'm talking about are old and mainly steel and concrete. Took a short period of time to adjust to the TouchWiz, but it's no more difficult than any other manufacture tweaked OS. The phone definitely does not have the "built US strong" feel, kinda flimsy. I could drop the DX and not worry too much. This phone I spent a few extra $'s for a stronger case.
Overall, I'd say it's a good phone for now until something better comes along. Could be worse, gotta co-worker with an LG that drives him nuts. He's gonna need therapy one day.
Haha no iphone for me. Wife has one but I wont go over to the cult. Thanks for the replies so far... Seems people like the Samsung but it still has problems that make me worry. I'm tempted to wait for the Razr just too see them both but I think the GS3 has some better specs... I live in northern NJ outside nyc so very good coverage but my nexus still just periodically losses all connections and has to reconnect... Four replacements makes me nervous....

Haha... I'm a cop so I prob need an otterbox, but I didn't get one with the nexus it would make the phone huge. I'm used top the size now so am otterbox prob wouldn't bother me. Just thought maybe with gorilla glass a thinner case might be OK.

If you are really worried about wear and tear on the usb port this mod should be right up your alley: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877191
All in all, it takes no more than 20-30 minutes to install, worst case.
It depends how much you care and flashing roms, I'd wait for the razr maxx HD. It's suppose to have a locked boot loader, but they're unlocking all there new phones. Some new phones are suppose to be coming out in the next couple months, so you might wanna wait to see what's coming.
Sent from my Cocaine White S3.
If you can, I'd at least advise waiting a few months for the next Nexus, Maxx HD etc. Phones with the next gen chipset (S4 Pro etc) are coming out soon.
My S3 is a great phone, but I have to agree the radios are worse than my previous HTC phone. If you are in an area with poor signal, the S3 will frequently drop data and gps locks.
Wow that's a really cool mod... I like. As for flashing ROMs I am pretty crazy until I find one I like then I back off and usually just do the updates. Sometimes it takes a while to find something that has all the features I want.
I'm still undecided...going to go look at the store today and hold it.
One more question... I read the reviews talk about the screen on gs3 being a little darker... Is this a problem or is it fixed with the custom ROMs?
Jim
Being in New Hampshire, with no other 4g coverage here on any other carrier, the service is awesome. The screen seems a tad darker than my epic 4g was on Sprint, but it is far from a problem. Rooting is extremely easy. Like it takes 2 minutes literally. Tons of stable ROMs. I definitely made a really good choice with the GS3, you won't be disappointed.

Doesn't Verizon offer a 14 day return/exchange policy? Worst case is try it, if you don't like it return it for another phone. Just don't root it during that time frame if you want to play it safe. Otherwise, ROMS provided for the GS3 are awesome in this community. I've had both the Sprint variant and now on Verizon for it's 4G LTE service.
Personally I'd wait a few months. Reception sucks but it's not too bad.

I would go with it and a JB ROM... I almost bought the iPhone 5 and backed out to keep my GS3 and unlimited Data..thank god I went over 2 GB today lol

I am also in the upgrade search. Thanks to all that contributed it may have helped me a bit with my choice as well coming from my Dinc.
Yes thank you for everyone's input. The opinions seem to be a little split, but that is to be expected. I'm leaning towards the GS3. I went to my local Verizon guy I've been dealing with for years. He said hands down he would go with the GS3. He said the Razr is still a bit behind in specs. I also see that the GS3 is 2GB RAM and the Razrs are only 1GB... The GS3 felt nice in hand.. sleek and smooth. The Motorola is still too clunky feeling to me.. angular and just not sleek. Personal opinion.
He also said there is no set release date for the Razrs... and I can get the GS3 cheaper. I also liked the reviews of the TouchWiz gestures...Interested to see how they are. Do any of the custom ROMs maintain the Touch Wiz gestures or features?
I think with the better specs right now I'd go with the GS3. The biggest problems, screen and reception, seem to be issues I can deal with. I rarely use my Nexus at full brightness and I the reception seems to be better than NExus in my area.

Also the battery on the GS3 seems to be pretty good considering its not promoted as such like the Maxx HD will be...

I almost got it too. Went to apple store and compared it hands on. I had 30 day return policy. Compared to the iphone, the colors are so much more vibrant! And the screen size is icing on the cake.

I'll also add that I own a macbook pro, and syncing--unless you run bootcamp--can be a PITA. Even with Android file transfer, it's often hit or miss.

It depends how much you care and flashing roms, I'd wait for the razr maxx HD. It's suppose to have a locked boot loader, but they're unlocking all there new phones. Some new phones are suppose to be coming out in the next couple months, so you might wanna wait to see what's coming.

there is no way a Verizon phone will come with a unlocked bootloader unless its that dreaded iPhone.
