do i have to Clockwordmod flash it first then root the phone?

Yea, first flash clockworkmod with nvflash and then flash the root zip file from jboxer's thread. Reboot and your stock rom will be rooted.

then i should be able to flash any rom correct

Exactly correct. No need to root first. That zip is for those who want to keep their stock rom and just root it.
If you want to flash another rom, then no need to root first. Just nvflash cwm and flash roms to your heart's content.

so i dont even have to root the phone to flash the rom? i can just nvflash and then flash the rom?

Yes and Yes. If you flash a rooted rom then it will be rooted. CWM runs a mini OS, not the full OS, so rooting is not an issue when you are in CWM. Clockworkmod always runs fully rooted.

[Q] Help with first attempt at root

Can someone please post a link on how one goes about rooting their phone now that superoneclick does not work after GB update? I didn't root before the update, and just tried to go through the process but to no avail. I really want to start flashing roms and unlock the power of the phone now that I have seen GB.
correct me if im wrong but i think you need to flash a rom that has root already.
as of right now you cannot root GB.
Run nvflash from the Dev section. Follow the instructions closely. There is a video available. Then flash xboarders rom. Then you will have a rooted updated rom.

First, download the rooted GB 2.3.3 ROM and copy it onto your SD card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
You won't be able to root with Superoneclick or any other rooting app. The easiest and fastest way to go about this is to flash CWM via NV flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
After flashing CWM reboot in recovery mode and flash the rooted ROM and voila!
You have the newest baseband and a rooted GB phone.
P.S. To be honest, I think the only reason that makes it worth going through all this trouble is being able to flash the new baseband on your phone.
Good Luck!

That is the easiest way to get root access.
Thank you all! So I'll be able to flash CM7 after this?
Also, I would assume devs are working on a way to use superoneclick, am I wrong?

I keep seeing this same reply and wondering... Can't someone make the necessary root files a flashable zip and then we don't have to flash a whole ROM to attain root?
Actually, so far they can't. The way you get root on your phones is by finding a security exploit so you can write a few files, and busybox simlinks to the system. Then, it installs superuser. No roms are rooted on android by default (well, stock ones anyways.) Since all the current methods to root a gingerbread rom don't work on the new update, this is the only way to do it for now.

[Q] G2x root or flash first

Sorry to ask a noob question
I have been looking into rooting my phone so I can use the 6 axis ps3 app
Where I get lost is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039985 says cant use super 1 click root need to flash first leads to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Which says if you are just getting started http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715 which leads back to root
So how do I flash a different rom without rooting first which requires the other rom
Does the chicken or the egg come first
First do the nvflash thing
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
then you can flash this stock rooted rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
after that you have root and you can flash any other roms you want.

Mostly correct. Use nvflash to put clockworkmod recovery on your phone. Then you can use it to flash any rom compatible with this phone. We have a lot of freedom with this phone because of its unlocked bootloader. As far as "root" goes (root privileges, superuser, su, etc), that is built into whichever rom you install. I think basically all custom roms are rooted.

Rooted stock rom ICS 4.0.4 but...

Let's say I want to flash a rom and made a backup thru CWM of my stock rom will I be able to keep root if I flash it back to the stock rom ?
II'm doing this cause I care most about no auto brightness issue than the actual advantage to go with a custom rom.
Thanks
Why don't you just root your stock ROM then? You need to be rooted to flash CWM recovery anyways..

If your ROM is already rooted, and you're restoring it from CWM, yes. If you're using fastboot to re-flash the stock ROM, no, you'll have to re-root it.
I'm kind of confused about what you're asking, though. Can you give more specific details? Are you going to flash a different ROM and try to flash the stock ROM, or parts of it, on top of the new ROM? I wouldn't do that unless you're very sure of what you're doing.

custom recovery problem

i have nexus s 4.0.4 im already root it but when install custom recovery drom rom manager its work but after reboot its gone how can i dix that
i use this guid to root it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088494
and i have a question can i install a rom with a stock recovery
You'll need a custom recovery to install a ROM. Follow these instructions and you'll be good to go:
Harbb said:
Delete or rename /system/etc/install-recovery.sh and flash CWM one last time. It'll stick. Each boot, stock ROMs reflash the stock recovery unless you delete/rename that file.
