Sorry to ask a noob question
I have been looking into rooting my phone so I can use the 6 axis ps3 app
Where I get lost is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039985 says cant use super 1 click root need to flash first leads to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Which says if you are just getting started http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715 which leads back to root
So how do I flash a different rom without rooting first which requires the other rom
Does the chicken or the egg come first
First do the nvflash thing
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
then you can flash this stock rooted rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
after that you have root and you can flash any other roms you want.

Mostly correct. Use nvflash to put clockworkmod recovery on your phone. Then you can use it to flash any rom compatible with this phone. We have a lot of freedom with this phone because of its unlocked bootloader. As far as "root" goes (root privileges, superuser, su, etc), that is built into whichever rom you install. I think basically all custom roms are rooted.

This is where I got my root from and is it ok to use this one? I like this one as it has the clockwork mod recovery as an option to root with

Or should I use this one?

ClockworkMod Recovery does not give you root. It gives you the ability to install ROMs, Kernels, and MODs.
If you're going to be using a rooted kernel, then just install ClockworkMod and then install your kernel.
If you just want root, I'd imagine both will be fine as the first link seems to just use the scripts from the 2nd link.
You shouldn't use any one click method if you plan on using a custom kernel. The kernel itself will have root, and can conflict with the once click method. Use your preferred method of flashing CWM, and flash your kernel. Root is not needed for CWM to work.
Well for some reason without rooting I can not install CWM. So should I root, install CWM and then uninstall root?
Thanks.
Edit: I think it worked this time around.
Edit 2: It did work.
Should you flash a kernel or a rom first?
I would go ROM first, then kernel, in the off chance that the ROM has a kernel included. You also don't need to reboot between flashes; flash within the same session.
Can someone please post a link on how one goes about rooting their phone now that superoneclick does not work after GB update? I didn't root before the update, and just tried to go through the process but to no avail. I really want to start flashing roms and unlock the power of the phone now that I have seen GB.
correct me if im wrong but i think you need to flash a rom that has root already.
as of right now you cannot root GB.
Run nvflash from the Dev section. Follow the instructions closely. There is a video available. Then flash xboarders rom. Then you will have a rooted updated rom.

First, download the rooted GB 2.3.3 ROM and copy it onto your SD card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
You won't be able to root with Superoneclick or any other rooting app. The easiest and fastest way to go about this is to flash CWM via NV flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
After flashing CWM reboot in recovery mode and flash the rooted ROM and voila!
You have the newest baseband and a rooted GB phone.
P.S. To be honest, I think the only reason that makes it worth going through all this trouble is being able to flash the new baseband on your phone.
Good Luck!

That is the easiest way to get root access.
Thank you all! So I'll be able to flash CM7 after this?
Also, I would assume devs are working on a way to use superoneclick, am I wrong?

I keep seeing this same reply and wondering... Can't someone make the necessary root files a flashable zip and then we don't have to flash a whole ROM to attain root?
Actually, so far they can't. The way you get root on your phones is by finding a security exploit so you can write a few files, and busybox simlinks to the system. Then, it installs superuser. No roms are rooted on android by default (well, stock ones anyways.) Since all the current methods to root a gingerbread rom don't work on the new update, this is the only way to do it for now.
I have a g2x and i can't root it. ive rooted my other one 2.2.2 which was easy as heck. but now im stuck with the update on the one im using. if you guys could help me out it would be appreciated.
Here's a very similar thread. You're answer is there.

do i have to Clockwordmod flash it first then root the phone?
Yea, first flash clockworkmod with nvflash and then flash the root zip file from jboxer's thread. Reboot and your stock rom will be rooted.
then i should be able to flash any rom correct

Exactly correct. No need to root first. That zip is for those who want to keep their stock rom and just root it.
If you want to flash another rom, then no need to root first. Just nvflash cwm and flash roms to your heart's content.
so i dont even have to root the phone to flash the rom? i can just nvflash and then flash the rom?

Yes and Yes. If you flash a rooted rom then it will be rooted. CWM runs a mini OS, not the full OS, so rooting is not an issue when you are in CWM. Clockworkmod always runs fully rooted.
Can someone explain me why rooting a phone is not possible on all kernels? If I understand this correctly, rooting a phone basically means putting "su" program into firmware (and probably put something like SUID bit on it).
I know that on a new phone the original problem is that to install su you need to have write permissions for system partition which in turn requires root. This circle is normally broken by running an exploit or somehow else breaking into the system.
But once we have root on 2.3.4 and install CWM and 2.3.6, why isn't it possible to install "su" program there? What makes me feel completely stupid is the fact that it's possible to have root with custom kernel on the same firmware.
Dude, please update your information. It's possible, and it's getting the most popular method to root since we got CWM. Moreover there are at least 3 threads where it is written. So just go for it!
Ok, looks like my original vision was fully correct. Just got misleaded by some comments in the 2.3.6 thread. It IS really possible to just install superuser without changing the kernel or installing a custom kernel.
Oh yes it is just flash cam via odin, and then flash su via cwm and voila!

I wish we knew it is so easy 2 months ago.
Indeed, but as far as I can remember we didn't have cwm then, just some rooted kernels.
This method itself is easy and pretty common among plenty android devices. That's the way I rooted my old htc incredible s (after I unlocked bootloader). But because cwm was sorely lacking it was a "no go".
Background:
I got myself a second-hand I9020T a couple of days back which had CWM recovery and a 4.0.4 Userdebug testkeys build on it. As circumstances turned out, I flashed the phone to the factory 4.1.2 (from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images), but didn't note down the details of the old 4.0.4 ROM.
I rather like stock roms. However, I like stock roms with root even more.
Questions:
I wanted to know if there was any method to root my Nexus S without resorting to using ClockworkMod recovery? I'm hoping for a z4root kind of method which doesn't mess around with the boot loader.
Does such a method even exist.
I'm hoping that I don't have to mess around with the boot loader, yet get root access and all the power to do direct querying of my SMS DB.
Note: I can install CWM recovery, but I'd rather not. It's just the superficial choice I'm making, not a well informed decision.

You don't have to mess with the bootloader itself, just the recovery.
And no, you will need a custom recovery to flash chainsDD superuser or chainfire SuperSU. There's TWRP also available and popular, if you simply do not like CWM.

Is is possible to install the SU update (whichever of the 2) and go back to the stock recovery?

Yes. I don't see why would one want to do that, but that's possible.
Once you're done with your flashing, you can flash stock Jellybean recovery from here:
