Hey Guys,
I am new here so please forgive any embarressing newness moments regarding my questions.
I noticed that GTab has at least 4 different Roms that are being actively developed in their own way (big thank you to the devs btw).
I also see there is a post already asking which rom people this is the best.
I dont know if its fair on the devs to say best or not but I was wondering if each rom was developed for a certain purpose in mind?
I mean is one built for better gaming while the other is for better web browsing etc??
Can anyone pls advise suitability of purpose?
I get my GTab soon as i just ordered it and will be changing the rom on it almost immediately. I'm just unsure which on to choose is all.

There is not that much difference between the roms. They are based from different source so they all look a little different. The best thing to do is install clockwork and check them all out and see what is best for you. Install one and run it for awhile then make a backup in clockwork and install another. If you don't like it you can then restore your backup and be back up in about 5 minutes.
I would personally wait on cm7 before installing as it has some weird quirks the others don't. I have nothing against cyanogenmod as I am running cm7 on my droid right now.

None of them is really better at any one thing than the other. It is mostly just user interface differences. TnT Lite is based off of the stock TnT that came on the tablet. Zpad is based off of the rom made for the Zpad. vegaN is based from the rom for the Advent Vega, and Cyanogenmod is based off of... Well, Cyanogenmod.
The GTab, and the Zpad are like brothers. Both made by Malata, and are almost the same thing. The Advent Vega uses similar hardware to us as well.
My personal favorite is vegaN but really only because I don't like the upper notification bar in TnT. Zpad is another one I like for the same reason.
For just starting out I would go with either TnTLite, or vegaN as they are the most popular, and most supported.
Can't really go wrong with any of them and I play with them all. Like said before I would stay away from the Cyanogenmod rom unless you are a techie. It works well, but it has a different way of mapping memory and some other differences that can get you into trouble.
Easiest to get answers to questions are TnTLite, or vegaN...
Thanks for the quick response guys!
I cant wait till my Gtab arrives!
I haven't flashed to any Tom's yet, but this seems to be the most popular. Why is that? I looked at the change log and I don't understand what I would be gaining I guess.

same too me, I tried it over 3.1, what I experienced:
- browser little bit slower
- more SOD
- nothing real extra feature
I have to use a custom rom for a couple of reasons:
1) My stock rom is the Chinese verison, which means no google apps or google sync. Without google, it's just not android.
2) I need the Chinese input methods. I would normally switch to the USA stock rom, but it doesn't have Chinese input. Prime does/did, Chinese handwriting input is MIA, but I'll sure it will be taken care of.
I choose to use a custom rom for these reasons:
3) I don't like excess crap on my computer. I can modify a custom rom before I install it, mostly just removing apps that I will never use.
4) Root! I love freedom on my computer. Root lets me do things. All kinds of neat things: block ads, increase speed on sd card, delete/modify system apps and directories, and lots more. Look into it, it is fun.
5) Overclock. Prime doesn't have it, but you can add a kernal that does. I currently don't overclock, but as the Tegra 2 ages, i will overclock it. I'm specifically waiting for a rom with a high GPU overclock. There is one out there that currently does have a minor GPU overclock.
6) Clockwork Recovery. Backup, restore, switch roms, clear cache and more.
Why I choose Prime:
7) Dock battery meter in the taskbar.
8) Reboot/recovery options for power button.
After looking through the current selection of roms available, I choose Prime. But I keep my eye on revolver and Clemsyn.

How do you not? OP clearly states that there are optimizations made to increase load times etc etc.
No, op states "better user experience" which is very vague. Also I'm not having any slow load times, everything is pretty zippy.

Last time I flashed a Tom he punched me in the face...
One reason I haven't seen mentioned would also be themes, but it is still early in the game, there are few options. Custom Roms are generally just optimized better, though the Transformer doesn't have nearly the bloat some Android devices have making them almost essential...
Honestly once you learn, it is such an easy process that flashing different roms/kernels and trying them is the only real way to know what is best for you and your usage.

Then why are you worrying about ROMs? It's obvious you want some of that Baconcomb so just get it already.
Honestly, I don't know why people ever need to "beg" you to try something. If you're happy with what you got already, then be happy.

If you're curious, then just do it... because all in honesty. One person's opinion is only a opinion. The only way you're going to know if it's worth it is from YOUR personal experience. I can personally say that, PRIME 1.6 and root is good and its worth it.
If you don't want to take my word for it, then don't. I'm not going to beg you to do it.

Wow...
He asked what was the difference between stock and Prime, and you went off in another direction. He wasn't asking to be "begged" into using Prime nor asking for others to convince him into using Prime at all.
Anyways, I know Prime has a few optimizations, but I don't know if it brings any substantial changes. There's a link to download the power/recovery mod, so I suppose it could be applied to any ROM including rooted stock.
One reason I would like to root my tf101 is to be able to use a USB dongle. But I am waiting for 3.2 to come out before since I just got my tf101.
The stock version is pretty good actually. No major complaints so far.
I hav ebeen using Prime for a while but ASUS stock version is definitely quite good. Even more so for lack of garbageware that so plagues the mobile phones...
Yea I guess I'm in the same camp. I haven't seen a compelling reason to move to a different ROM versus rooted stock. There are too many posts that seem to lead users to believe that a different ROM is the same as root. Remember you can root the stock ROM. The OP is asking what user experience enhancements make Prime (or any other ROM) compelling.
If you read changelog second post it will tell you exactly what's new in the ROM. Many changes are only useful for experienced linux users, but many others are useful for everyone. The nice thing about roms is that most of the things and tweaks are already done for you. If you don't need/care about those changes then there is no point for you to reflash.
Which BXX mod did you get ?
I'm curious because I'm thinking of picking up one of these today ( the guy at Orifice Depot tried to get me to buy an Iconia, but that thing doesn't have anywhere near the support the TF is getting...)....?
Manufacturer's (ASUS included) have to be very careful about their ROM releases so they are thoroughly tested and ready to release to the general public. Consequently they are slower to release updates (i.e. NVidia updates, etc.). Custom ROMs generally consolidate the best and latest releases from various manufacturer's into the most cuttest edge versions you can possibly be running. As you'll notice this can also mean more lock-ups and weird issues since you are getting just-available changes. So if you prefer max stability, stick with the manufacturer's updates. For many of us part of the fun of owning an Android tablet is the rapid pace that custom ROMs are put out and the interesting/quirky things they bring us.

I got a B60 TF and a B60 dock from my local OD this past weekend (Denver, CO).
Prime Vs Stock
Reason why I flashed the Prime Rom. With Prime and a netflix patch I'm able to stream netflix movie. Also now Adhoc connections work. I can Wifi tehther my TF101 with my Driod using the adhoc connection. I can now easily reboot into recovery prior to this going into recovery was a bit tricky. This was not possible even with HC 3.2. Also I don't have to worry about losing root becuase of an OTA update.
I am actually a flashaholic when it comes to flashing roms on my phone. But so far, I haven't come across any compelling reasons to flash custom roms on my transformer. The need to flash roms on phones offer benefits that are non existant on a tablet. For instance, one major reason to flash custom roms on phones is to enable free wifi tethering, which obviously does not apply here. Another reason, as stated above is to remove bloatware. The transformer doesn't really have that. And yet another reason is to be able to update to the latest Android version before the official release. Correct me if i'm wrong but when I looked, the 3.2 update came out officially before any transformer custom roms had it. There are a couple more minor customizations options that I'm not seeing yet being offered by the transformer roms. I am fully aware of the speed enhancements and optimizations that custom roms offer, but considering the custom roms for the transformer are still relatively new (no disrespect or discredit to the devs for their hard work), and considering that even still now, the rooting and flashing methods keep getting outdated and changed, it's too early in this ballgame for me to flash.
I've been lurking the forums here now for a month and finally pulled the trigger, my TF get's here monday.
I have yet to see any reason to flash a custom rom or even root at this point. I'll be rooting it just to say it's rooted and just for a couple of root only programs I have. The custom roms don't really bring anything to the table that this tablet doesn't have. it has the newest version of android with all the bells and whistles. I'm not going to be overclocking. I understand netflix is big for some people, but, from what I have read flashing the fix breaks some video playback. I'm ok to wait for the official netflix patch. A 32gb MicroSD and the 16gb on board space is plenty to store movies on for travel etc. I also have a server I run at home that will stream my entire movie,. TV, and music collections directly to me.
Having the best of the best and the most up to date version of android does have it's perks
ICS has also now been ported and boots up on the Droid 3 lol. Great work to Hashcode for getting it going!

Well, it is a 3G phone, so there shouldn't be issues getting the radios working. I do find it amusing the type of the support these cheesy phones get though.
I don't want to get off topic, but I am curious what sort of CIQ and other potential spyware has been implemented in ICS. It seems a good opportunity for Google to embed CIQ deep within the framework, but alas, who knows.
The main two features of ICS that I think I would like, but don't need, is USB OTG and WiFi Direct.

You already know. Yes, we are eager for ICS/CM7.1/CM7.2/CM9...and everything under the sun that a working RIL would enable us. But, having said that, I think the vast majority of us place FUNCTION in front of FEATURES.
We, Android enthusists with the skills to flash but not actually dev, are like children and will never be satisfied. We need a healthy meal, but are going to whine to have candy for dinner every night. As a dev, you're more similar to our parent in this metaphor... Don't take it personally when we metaphorically say we hate you--we don't. We love you. We need your help to eat at all, so make sure it's the best meal you can provide.
Besides, if the RIL never comes, who bought this phone for Ice Cream Sandwich anyway? I bought this phone for 4G.

If you want an AOSP ROM, you shouldn't buy a Samsung phone.
Twice bitten for me. Neither of my Samsung phones has had an AOSP ROM.
As a self-proclaimed nube, I am generally curious what advantages we would see on AOSP anyways.
Is there some super-spiffy amazing bad-ass feature that I don't know about?
Humble 5.0 is great for me. I will try Infinity if/when its ready.
ICS in particular has WiFi Direct and USB OTG as I mentioned above, which I assume that CM7 wouldn't enable.

AOSP tends to offer a faster experience, and better battery life. It does this by not having any carrier or OEM bloat anywhere. There is a lot of stuff added on to the stock ROM that cannot be removed. To give you an idea, a heavily debloated TW ROM for the Fascinate is usually ~160MB, give or take, where as a stock AOSP ROM is <100MB for the same Android version, GB in this case. That would mean that even the best debloated/cleaned up TouchWiz ROM is still going to have about 40% more useless junk in it than a stock AOSP ROM, and that junk slows down the system and drains the battery.

Bionic got ICS support because Kejar has a Bionic probably. I'm just glad we are on the eve of GB finally and that Imnuts and Imoseyon can get to business with some code.
Over the years around computers I've learned one thing, the next OS is always easier to use, easier to program in and what not, but it is always more complex and requires more hardware, more RAM and shortly after release the end user experience isn't all that much better than it was 6 months earlier. You should see DOS 5 run on a quad core monster processor - wow!

I agree with what you're saying mostly, but your post almost sounds like you expect Imnuts and Imoseyon to develop and post their work when they have zero obligation to develop and/or share any of their work in any way. If I wasn't so hard-pressed for cash, I would donate more to the devs. I will when I am able though.
One should also remember the short life cycle of smartphones. I am already looking forward to the Galaxy S III mostly for the display- SAMOLED III.
Also, I would like to be able to watch 480p Flash content in the browser without having to overclock, hopefully 720p Flash in the browser with the GS3.
Of course I would like my Charge to blaze along at its maximum potential, but there is a thin line between spending and wasting time on dated hardware. If you want the the best experience on a device, then it would be best to buy older hardware that it well-developed, like the Fascinate. I am willing to sacrifice for the perks of the Charge, like the SAMOLED+ display and 4G.
In theory wouldn't we be able to take an ics Rom from the prime, get drivers working for our tegra to achieve hardware acceleration? Not completely sure of the differences between both devices other than the processor.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
It would take time in order for developers to translate the drivers.
Put it this way. It would be quicker, and easier, to wait even a month for the TF101 to receive ICS rather than trying to translate from the Prime to the TF101.
Rumor mill has it that the TF101 will be receiving ICS at the end of the month.
I heard a rumor about an ICS rom already out there on the web, but that's just a rumor. You have to ask yourself if it's worth it to risk your tablet's life or just wait a month. Don't do like me...
Fellas, they're already working on porting the Motorola xoom's ICS over to the TF101 as we speak. Working out a few bugs now, could possibly be here before the official ICS build if noobs will quit asking them how to flash the unfinished product and other development-unrelated questions (in other words, have a peek, but don't bug the big guys at work )
BTW TF201 has the Tegra 3, while Xoom has a tegra 2..much easier to port from what I understand..so don't hold your breath on the Prime's ICS coming to roost on your OG TF any time soon..
I saw something from Asus that said we won't be getting it until February. I'll be looking forward to the Xoom port!

I personnally think it's stupid to take risks to get what you can get in one month, in a more adapted way. Who knows! Maybe you'll end up bricking your device...
Xoom has most of the same hardware....so they're just taking the items that aren't for our device and replacing them with proper drivers.

For one, it isn't a risk once the devs have gotten it right to flash if you know what you are doing, there will have been 100 people who flashed the ROM repeatedly while testing before you ever gt your hands on it.
Second point- the official ICS update will almost surely take some time to Root, if your device wasn't rooted before the update, and no such problem will exist with a dev ICS ROM since it will be rooted in the source.
Final point- ICS is ICS, if the hardware works, and software functions, there isn't much difference between the official build and a ported build, except for the ported build is at the mercy of the devs to put whatever goodies and extras the official ICS build didn't include..
ICS official = wait and get stuck without root
ICS dev ROM = be here soon and have root + extras.
Which one do you prefer now?

Outside of proprietary hardware drivers, I have yet to see an OEM ROM exceed performance of a community ROM. OEMs have nowhere near the amount of people working on their ROMs as a community version, and nowhere near the amount of eyes checking for bugs.

There is always a risk when you flash a rom, always. Now I had your opinion before I bricked my device, and I knew what I was doing. Then again, you have to choose between security and variety.

This is so true. Even if the OTA ICS update were to be released, I would still wait for a Dev to mess around with it before I updated. Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of OEM skins and their performance is always lacking.

How did you get a brick? Flash failed halfway through or something? I've probably flashed 100 ROMs, from xbox to android, the only device I ever bricked was a windows phone, and its just soft bricked now. I didn't know what I was doing with that thing...I've had plenty of close calls don't get me wrong, heck I lifted up a trace on my xbox motherboard and had to repair it on the spot with solder within 10 minutes or the clock-capacitor would have discharged forcing me into clock-loops (death for an xbox)..'know what you're doing' has very different levels of complexity
There is always a risk, to be sure, I should have worded myself better. But the same amount of risk as any ROM, not specific to this one..I've never heard of an OTA update failing and bricking a device, but I'm sure it can happen as well..anytime you are flashing onboard firmware there's always a chance something can go wrong. I was just saying that a Dev rom will have been flashed and booted and reflashed 100 or 1000 times by the devs during the build process before any of us 'outsiders' gets a taste of it. In my opinion, that's about as risk-free as it gets with modding these things..and in the end, who is going to upgrade to ICS without wanting it rooted? At least, who on this site?
I feel much more confident loading an already rooted ICS rom from the community than I do flashing the OTA update and wondering if I'm going to lose root/recovery etc. It is a personal opinion though..

This.
OEM updates of any kind are more known for borking a system than a community version and again, it is because there are many more eyes on a community version. OEM versions are seen as a necessary evil for them. The life cycle of the product is usually over or already over and they do not want to devote any resources to an endeavour that now only costs money instead of makes money.
Asus may be a little different with the TF101 because they still are selling a fair amount of them. Best Buy still keeps restocking the 16GB version and with the TF201 problems they may push the TF101 as a sort of "budget premium" since ICS completely re-invigorates older hardware (my Atrix is running an alpha build without OC and GPU accel and it is just as smooth as full GPU and OC).
I still plan on waiting for Gnufabio's ICS Revolver release.
Cheers!

I just tingled at the thought.
ICS does breathe a lot of new life in to old hardware. My old Incredible runs it fairly smoothly, just laggs a bit on transitions. But it did make me more interested in my old phone.
Hi all,
My name is swagstr and I've been active in the OG EVO forums for a good part of the last year. I also have an EVO 3D and just picked up an OG Transformer from 1saleaday.
I haven't received the unit yet, but I am trying to figure out exactly what I'm going to do with it when I receive it.
Before I start, I AM NOT A NOOB... But I've never used/rooted a Transformer, so bear with me. I've been doing a lot of research for this device too (and I know how to hit search )
If the device comes with Honeycomb... should I leave it there? I'm going to be sharing it with my gf and I'm sure she is going to become agitated if our new tablet is rebooting periodically.
Also, is ICS that unstable? What causes the reboots? It seems to be the "Sleep of Death" but I'm still a little fuzzy
I know a lot of what I can do is going to depend on what my serial number is Just looking for a good general direction.
In summary:
Does ICS suck as bad as everyone makes it out to be?
Is AOSP as bad (or worse) than stock ICS
If it comes with HC, should I leave it there?
General list of ROMs and kernels that are bad ass
Thanks for reading! I hope I will be able to contribute to this awesome device and learn as much as I know about the OG EVO soon

General list of ROMs and kernels that are bad ass
Thanks for reading! I hope I will be able to contribute to this awesome device and learn as much as I know about the OG EVO soon

1. No. Its the loud minority that makes it seem bad. Yes, there are issues. Yes, some gets RR/SOD's quite often (a lot of people, myself included, gets it very rarely or not at all).
Random reboots during use is extremely rare. Its when its sleeping it usually happens.
2. No, its a hell a lot better in every aspect.
3. Up to you, I say no. The goodies in ICS makes it more appealing than HC, despite its issues. But if you want a really really stable device - then go with HC (but not stock).
4. I like team EOS builds. reports say that guevenors kernel is very good, but I havnt tried it myself.
I suggest you try out the roms available in the dev. section and stick with the one you like best.
Thank you!!

Goatshocker pretty much hit the nail on the head with the loud minority thing, in my personal experience ICS actually fixed a bunch of problems I had with HC. I did flash a custom rom and kernel, which I Highly recommend you do. If you get your tablet on hc and you can root with razorclaw use that then flash a rom, if not upgrade to the proper ics version for vipermod opt. 1 and use that.
I suggest android revolution hd, it's ics and very stable
Stock hc is stable but is not using all capacity from tegra2
Stock ics is using the power of tegra2 but is unstable.
