Suggestions for new Transformer - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My name is swagstr and I've been active in the OG EVO forums for a good part of the last year. I also have an EVO 3D and just picked up an OG Transformer from 1saleaday.
I haven't received the unit yet, but I am trying to figure out exactly what I'm going to do with it when I receive it.
Before I start, I AM NOT A NOOB... But I've never used/rooted a Transformer, so bear with me. I've been doing a lot of research for this device too (and I know how to hit search )
If the device comes with Honeycomb... should I leave it there? I'm going to be sharing it with my gf and I'm sure she is going to become agitated if our new tablet is rebooting periodically.
Also, is ICS that unstable? What causes the reboots? It seems to be the "Sleep of Death" but I'm still a little fuzzy
I know a lot of what I can do is going to depend on what my serial number is Just looking for a good general direction.
In summary:
Does ICS suck as bad as everyone makes it out to be?
Is AOSP as bad (or worse) than stock ICS
If it comes with HC, should I leave it there?
General list of ROMs and kernels that are bad ass
Thanks for reading! I hope I will be able to contribute to this awesome device and learn as much as I know about the OG EVO soon

1. No. Its the loud minority that makes it seem bad. Yes, there are issues. Yes, some gets RR/SOD's quite often (a lot of people, myself included, gets it very rarely or not at all).
Random reboots during use is extremely rare. Its when its sleeping it usually happens.
2. No, its a hell a lot better in every aspect.
3. Up to you, I say no. The goodies in ICS makes it more appealing than HC, despite its issues. But if you want a really really stable device - then go with HC (but not stock).
4. I like team EOS builds. reports say that guevenors kernel is very good, but I havnt tried it myself.
I suggest you try out the roms available in the dev. section and stick with the one you like best.

Thank you!!

Goatshocker pretty much hit the nail on the head with the loud minority thing, in my personal experience ICS actually fixed a bunch of problems I had with HC. I did flash a custom rom and kernel, which I Highly recommend you do. If you get your tablet on hc and you can root with razorclaw use that then flash a rom, if not upgrade to the proper ics version for vipermod opt. 1 and use that.

I suggest android revolution hd, it's ics and very stable
Stock hc is stable but is not using all capacity from tegra2
Stock ics is using the power of tegra2 but is unstable.

MR2 Coming Soon

MR2 will be coming via OTA in the next couple of days MR2 has been through four different revisions and will be based on the 1.70.xx code. There are a number of fixes but the most important should be fixing the reboots and improving the 4G/3G transitions.
I know everyone is waiting for GB which is MR3, but it still needs some time. The good news is that it is being worked on it is already on its fifth SW revision.
Awesome. I can wait for GB no problem, I just want a fix for the reboots. I'm sick of my phone rebooting 5+ times a day, happy an update is coming soon.

OR... you could just scoot on over to the dev forum and pick yourself up a spiffy new rom built on MR2 which is quite solid and fast and will use the same or very similar radios to what will be in the OTA. I tried a couple of them. They are spartan on fancy stuff, but they are reliable if nothing else. Possibly the most functional and reliable roms over there.
Why does someone always have to pop intro threads like this and state the obvious. I'm sure everyone with a Thunderbolt that frequents these forums is aware that rooting and installing a custom rom is an option. Some people have their reasons for wanting to stay stock.
I for one am still stock because this is the first phone I've had in quite a while that the stock rom is quite good. I spent a long time on WinMo, so I am used to custom roms just the make the device functional. Right now custom roms on the TB are mostly just different, not necessarily a huge need to me (GB roms are debatable on this point).
Once the custom roms offer something I want that I can't get from stock (and mature a bit more), I'm sure I'll root and rom. For now I'm enjoying stock stability and a working camera. Just because someone can do something doesn't make it something they need to do.

My thoughts exactly. Sure I would like to avoid the reboots (given I have had 2 in a 3 week period), and maybe a faster better radio, but the software and sense is so solid.

Bingo.. agreed 100%
Coming from HTC devices like the 8525, ATT Tilt, and Touch Pro 2, Ive just about had my share of ROMs for a lifetime. I just want something that works. After paying all this money, Im gonna let Verizon and HTC do what they're supposed to do.

I agree with wanting an official update, but the stock rom is far from good. Yes the speed is good but the battery life is horrible. With custom roms I have been able to triple my battery life and limit the random reboots I was getting stock, along with the already good speed being improved. Das BAMF Stripped 1.8

agreed. So far only 1 reboot in 2 weeks (apparently that is good) and I get occasional instances where home button doesn't want to work.
I just wish the damn thing rebooted faster. It takes almost 2 minutes to boot, then another couple of minutes before sense is responsive.
Coming from the hd7 and 25 second boot times, this is killer...
I also made/used custom roms on my q9c, tp2 and hd2, but want to give stock a chance. Maybe I will root if I decide I need to tether, but so far, things are looking good stock.

"mr2" we leaked on the forums is NOT mr2. 1.66/1.67/1.68/1.69 will not be MR2.
I can confirm OP's comments on the current "mr2" candidate version number, and give a approximate release of july 6th. With verizon things are given to change, the release date can change, so can the version being released.

His comment was pretty blunt/unhelpful and rude, but there does tend to be some complaining from those that want to have their cake (those that don't want to root) and eat it too (still want updates/workarounds as quick as those that have root).
Those that seem to be frustrated by such things, perhaps android is not the phone for them or at least android phones that are not officially blessed by google (nexus phones).

Anyone else saddened that the development of roms have basically halted?

Trigger is done, roman moved on. Xboarder stopped a long time ago.
There are about 5 left,
EB? I think this is still being worked on..
MIUI
CM7
Whitehawk's 2.3.3 & other stock-based roms
Faux's Nexus
That's it. I hope Krylon's & Whitehawk's up-coming rom is kick-ass.

Once the Prime or Hercules launch you can probably bet that it will be a complete afterthought
I may be off the mark but as far as I'm concerned, NVidia's the one who screwed us all by not releasing their source. In the absence of that development can only go so far. This will be my last NVidia device of any kind if I can help it -- for phones/tablets, I'm going with TI or Qualcomm and for laptops, I'm going with ... well, whatever I can get away with
I'm happy so long as CM7 keeps chugging along and the lge_star keeps getting device-specific updates.

Yeah Nvidia can suck it. ATI and for Computers and TI/Samsung/Qualcomm for mobile.
Nvidia has never been that open with their products. And likely never will.
I'm not worried about it. Its a pretty bad ass phone, once you get it working right. Trigger and Roman aren't necessarily gone...he's just working on other phones too. Plus, I'm sure new devs are getting some G2Xs every day. Somebody will step in to fill all the voids. Whitehawkx is around, Fits is busy, faux, and obviously the CM team...our world isn't so bleak. Hell, man...get the dev tools and make us something.

When I get my g2x next week I'll see if HTC sense is possible.
Used to be a HUGE CM7 fan, still am but I am thoroughly impressed with MIUI and the level of customization and user interface, its just alot cleaner. And of couse MIUI would be nowhere without the CM7 base. Hats off to both teams! My G2x would be garbage without them.

Whose MUIU are you using? The one here or the one over on the other site?
I'm using Jface's 8.19 rom since it was released a few weeks ago and aside from the lack of WiFi Calling and WiFi Tether, it is running like a dream. Battery is good and the phone is snappy. I was getting FC's with Rom Manager Premium but RM updated and now its good.
But really, CM and MIUI are pretty much the icing on the cake. Both are updated regularly by their respective teams.
It is also funny that this thread is right above "Nightlies are like crack". There are plenty of stuff to flash and try but right now, most roms are "as good as they can get "hardware-wise" aside from little tweaks and bug fixes all of them are working fairly well.
I need WiFi calling so that version isn't a viable option for me. There are still some little bugs with the version on the other site (having problem installing and applying themes). Once the bugs are worked out it would be a viable alternative to CM7. I still use Weapons as my daily ROM, and CM7 when I want Netflix. If CM7 or MIUI found a way to get HBO Go working and allowed HDMI output control I would probably start using them on a daily basis.

With minimal support from LG and Nvidia devs can only do so much. Most rooms have already become about as good as it's possible to be within their constraints.

Ya I just got this phone. This is the 13th android I ever had and definitely near the bottom for development. Not much variety and seems to be going downhill
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
You can't get much variety because this phone is based off Stock android. Can't really blame the devs if LG couldn't produce a respectable upgrade.
All the ROMs are based of CM7, AOSP, or Stock 2.3.3
If you seen one you seen them all. Can't have SENSE on this device. That would create more flavor of ROMs.
But the biggest deterrent is LG and NVIDIA. No support, you can only get so far. Lesson learned. Don't buy a device that has no love/support from manufacturer.
lately i've been upgrading less and less. i think once the phone gets to a stable environment (which is almost has) there really is less and less reason for development since it is stable.
There was someone that was looking into porting motoblur and optimus 2x but he seems to have gone AWOL

Thinking about getting this phone, but dev section seems dead why?

I was thinking about selling my Vibrant and buying a G2x, but the dev section seems to be pretty dead. Any reason why wasnt this CMs personal phone at one time?
I think part of it is LG's quick memory regarding it. Quick as in quick to forget it, and Nvidia won't release driver source so devs are forced to reuse the 2.3.3 release in order to get 100% functionality.

Some devs don't post updates on xda. Some of them give updatea via twitter or other sites. But it's not dead.

Does anyone know if they will ever release new drivers? So basically until they do which is most likely never this phone has been as updated as possible? I noticed CM7 is still updating which means 2.3.6 so is there much chance of ICS? Finally who are some good people to follow on twitter for good roms? Thanks a ton guys!
due to overall problems
I believe there were many more developers that planned on developing for the g2x and bought the device to do so as i did.
But with so may problems at the start i just didnt want to even attempt to rom for this device and be blamed when the phone self destructed. after much tampering it is running pretty well but i just dont trust the phone and im sure there are some others that didnt work on the G2X for the same reason. There are some very good options out there and talented people that are working on the G2x. so dont be afraid due to low quanity because there is some high quality work done.
Not sure it will grow much since its been obvious that tmobile and lg's fix for the phone is to shutup until it goes away. But the roms have the phone running pretty well and you wont be disapointed, But i would wait until oct 12th and get the hercules(even without the samsung chip) will be a killer phone or the HTC coming out the same day with similar specs.
This phone works fabulously with CyanogenMod, EXCEPT that bluetooth audio (to a wireless headset or whatever) doesn't work.
Other than that, EVEYRYTHING works. Love this phone.
Well that's disappointing to hear that I probably will never see ICS running on this device. It's a very capable device and the fact that LG refuses to update makes me want to put them in the same category as Viewsonic (unfortunately I also bought the g-tablet).

will be the best hope to get icecream running. if they do so than other rommers will also follow suite. but cm leads the way on drivers and such for most roms. so if they dont do it ussually noone does. But i wouldnt expect to see anything from LG, they have not shown anything in the way of skill or care to put out updates for their devices.
Because there ate stable ROMs out there and you can only do so much. Other lively dev sections ate deceiving - 20 variations of the stock ROM with different wallpapers and start up screens does not mean a lot of development for the phone.

There are plenty of devs to follow just some took some time off to dev for other devices ... I follow fitsnugly because he does some great compiling with his roms ... Morfic has some awesome kernals and faux123 has his aosp rom and awesome kernals... doniqq has his eaglesblood roms ... whitehawkx has weapon rom... so there's plenty ... One of the basic things I had to decide on was whether I wanted the LG camera app with an OTA based rom or all the fancy-ness of a CM7 based rom. Now I'm at the point where I just group OTA or CM7 and go from there.

I was running this rom up until 5 minutes ago... I just reflashed fitsnuglys 9/27 kang... Dont get me wrong the 2.3.3 roms are great... There's just something about the cm7 and the kangs that I like... There's always something new added to them and for me they seem to make my phone run better ... Sure there's no LG camera but there's plenty of camera market apps..
Yeah, I see updates for ROMs pretty often, every 5-10days, that's a good release period, and if you want to use a ROM that is constantly being developed just run CM7, a lot of people say it's not good with battery but if you flash one of morfics kernels you will have great battery life. Some people run into issues with it but if you wipe everything you should be fine. Faux's AOSP Rom+Kernel run great together also.
While development might have slowed down a bit for this phone, there's still plenty of excellent devs and roms to choose from. I have always preferred faux's aosp rom/kernel combo for my daily stable/very reliable/great performing/battery life.
Now if you want to see no development look no further then the mytouch4g slide thread. That's just sad cuz even the og mt4g has tons of devs working on it and its still a great phone.

It's laughable at this point.

ICS has also now been ported and boots up on the Droid 3 lol. Great work to Hashcode for getting it going!

Well, it is a 3G phone, so there shouldn't be issues getting the radios working. I do find it amusing the type of the support these cheesy phones get though.
I don't want to get off topic, but I am curious what sort of CIQ and other potential spyware has been implemented in ICS. It seems a good opportunity for Google to embed CIQ deep within the framework, but alas, who knows.
The main two features of ICS that I think I would like, but don't need, is USB OTG and WiFi Direct.

You already know. Yes, we are eager for ICS/CM7.1/CM7.2/CM9...and everything under the sun that a working RIL would enable us. But, having said that, I think the vast majority of us place FUNCTION in front of FEATURES.
We, Android enthusists with the skills to flash but not actually dev, are like children and will never be satisfied. We need a healthy meal, but are going to whine to have candy for dinner every night. As a dev, you're more similar to our parent in this metaphor... Don't take it personally when we metaphorically say we hate you--we don't. We love you. We need your help to eat at all, so make sure it's the best meal you can provide.
Besides, if the RIL never comes, who bought this phone for Ice Cream Sandwich anyway? I bought this phone for 4G.

If you want an AOSP ROM, you shouldn't buy a Samsung phone.
Twice bitten for me. Neither of my Samsung phones has had an AOSP ROM.
As a self-proclaimed nube, I am generally curious what advantages we would see on AOSP anyways.
Is there some super-spiffy amazing bad-ass feature that I don't know about?
Humble 5.0 is great for me. I will try Infinity if/when its ready.
ICS in particular has WiFi Direct and USB OTG as I mentioned above, which I assume that CM7 wouldn't enable.

AOSP tends to offer a faster experience, and better battery life. It does this by not having any carrier or OEM bloat anywhere. There is a lot of stuff added on to the stock ROM that cannot be removed. To give you an idea, a heavily debloated TW ROM for the Fascinate is usually ~160MB, give or take, where as a stock AOSP ROM is <100MB for the same Android version, GB in this case. That would mean that even the best debloated/cleaned up TouchWiz ROM is still going to have about 40% more useless junk in it than a stock AOSP ROM, and that junk slows down the system and drains the battery.

I keep hearing we won't have ics because we have a 4g phone but the bionic just got ics port... Maybe we still have hope?

Bionic got ICS support because Kejar has a Bionic probably. I'm just glad we are on the eve of GB finally and that Imnuts and Imoseyon can get to business with some code.
Over the years around computers I've learned one thing, the next OS is always easier to use, easier to program in and what not, but it is always more complex and requires more hardware, more RAM and shortly after release the end user experience isn't all that much better than it was 6 months earlier. You should see DOS 5 run on a quad core monster processor - wow!

I agree with what you're saying mostly, but your post almost sounds like you expect Imnuts and Imoseyon to develop and post their work when they have zero obligation to develop and/or share any of their work in any way. If I wasn't so hard-pressed for cash, I would donate more to the devs. I will when I am able though.
One should also remember the short life cycle of smartphones. I am already looking forward to the Galaxy S III mostly for the display- SAMOLED III.
Also, I would like to be able to watch 480p Flash content in the browser without having to overclock, hopefully 720p Flash in the browser with the GS3.
Of course I would like my Charge to blaze along at its maximum potential, but there is a thin line between spending and wasting time on dated hardware. If you want the the best experience on a device, then it would be best to buy older hardware that it well-developed, like the Fascinate. I am willing to sacrifice for the perks of the Charge, like the SAMOLED+ display and 4G.

If you're too impatient for us devs to get cm7 and/or cm9 ported to this phone, then we'll be glad to see you go.
Good Luck!
Really? Was that really necessary, op?

It hurts me a little in the inside seeing that, but I'll live. This phone has been great, don't diss it!

My comment may have been a little harsh and I will delete it. Seriously though, this phone will always be one step behind the rest. It is a great device and it's hardware specs fall in line with those receiving ICS. Samsung just got Ginger out to us and how long has that been out?
I do appreciate all the work the Devs have done and are doing. Without you guys this phone would be completely dead. Currently though it is half dead and time to sell based on Samsung's decision.
I have the feeling this phone will get ICS through other channels, but that remains to be seen, for one, and the lack of support for this device from Samsung is really the point here, for two.
With the Android Update Alliance a clear attempt to simply stay concerns for fragmentation and lacking, irresponsible product support shining so clearly through it's remains, I am very glad to have kept this phone and to have supported developers that are on my team, and not just pretending to be. Sell? NO WAI.
What outcome does that hold? More money to Samsung for the seemingly delicious SGS2? Or better yet, complaining about the unhealthy support at the device deli I am seats at, only to cross the street and put money down to bite on another manufacturer's mis-advertised meal?
No no, my question remains.
Where's the beef? It goes unanswered.
Except here at XDA. Where support means putting my money where my mouth is. Raver, Hawk, and Co. can expect their christmas bonus. The money I won't spend on empty promises can go to those who were promised nothing, promised nothing, and delivered anyways.
May all your device purchases be used, may all your developers get their just rewards, and may all your manufacturers have their feet held close to the fire.
Merry Christmas to XDA, and to all abused consumers on Android who haven't wised up to where your dollars belong, a swift flight.
I am happy to stay right here, of new devices steer clear, and to upgrade eventually without fear - all thanks to the community found so near. Two clicks to XDA!

ooh, that's a cheap move by Sammy. All they care about is cash. They are quite aware that this phone will run ICS almost as well as gs2, not counting the dual core thing. If not that, it will still be as fast if not faster than GB on this. Oh well, at least we will get CM7. I don't know about cm9 because we might have the same kernel source issue. Oh well, maybe ill get the next of the nexuses. Maybe with "jolly rancher" or something similar. Maybe 4.1 or 5.0.
Anyway, those who are average and don't mod their android phones who get the ICS update ota from Samsung won't even notice it is different because touchwiz would kill it anyway.
Edit: nice poem aldreth. You posted before me, so I didn't see it previously.

Did sammy ever even promise us GB? I don't recall one being made, and with ICS on the horizon, our chances were looking less and less likely. The plans for the SGS4G may not have been announced, but there is still a slight chance. i'll get my ICS soon enough, whether it be with this device or another.

Seriously???
May be a stupid question but what would you so need in ICS that GB cannot deliver? You realize that it's not gonna be any faster or better, right? I mean you're running on the same exact hardware and you'll see about the same level of performance out of it no matter which android os you're using.
Sorry, I just don't get this constant need to upgrade thing...
I know I'm upgrading the os when there's
1. a definite improvement in its performance
2. soft that runs on it and doesn't run on the older os
Meanwhile and probably for the next year or so everything will work fine with GB.
Slick ass movie by samsung. Them ****s want us to buy another phone.
@Airfluip1- You said we will at least get CM7, is that for sure? I mean is someone working on it now and is it official or un-official?
I do not see the point of ICS as it is basically only a cosmetic difference than what we are running now. The awesome devs here have already made Roms that outperform ICS on our phones. I would much rather see MIUI but, CM7 will be good too.

I guess what I should have said was how much better could ICS be versus what we have now with the custom Roms? I mean my phone is seriously fast and will run anything I want, so what's the point? What could I do with ICS that I cannot do now?

With a newer kernel, one would only expect bugfixes, performance fixes, and new features (like host usb support, new arm hibernation support, and a ton of others...)
With a newer android, I know there are bugs that I opened with AOSP that are fixed in ICS. So that would be nice to be able to test the resolution of the bugs I opened. Lots of other android specific fixes, performance improvements, and new features.

I'll bet you'll be impressed when you use it, but work will need to be done before we can get there... so...

You obviously don't love android as much as us.
If you don't care about what android, then go buy a used G1 or an iPhone.

ICS is beautiful. Not just the eye-candy but the features are greater. I mean, if we get more Bhundvens, and etc working to make our phone as fast as a galaxy nexus, then if we get ICS, we can make it faster. Like I said though. Android love = loving and cherishing the updates. Every version will be better. But we should make the best of trying to get each version.(That's just me). Also, why MIUI, i love CM7 much better.(personal preference, maybe just what you like, I hate iPhone, just like MIUI, I love AOSP android, CM7)
But I guess we will get CM7 sometime. +1 to Bhundven.

I was basing what I said off of " don't fix something that's not broken ". I just don't see enough improvements ( software-wise ) to make me wanna switch from ( hopefully soon ) CM7 to ICS or even Tehgyb's Rom I am on now to ICS. I love Android and I loved having CM7 on all of my devices, I still have an Optimus V and Incredible S running CM7 and I was really disappointed when I got this phone and there was not a CM7 for it which blew me away as seeing as this is a Galaxy S phone. I'm not saying ICS is not good, I'm just saying that talking and reading about it hasn't done anything to me to make me want to use it. Of course I will try it the first day it is available for this phone and I probaly will say " Damn, this is nice! " but, until I can use it for myself and not just read about it, I'm going to stick with my point.
@Airfluip1, I will never own an iAnything.
bswann, since no one has actually answered your question about what features ICS has that GB does not, you can try reading these articles to get a better idea:
http://www.androidauthority.com/android-2-3-gingerbread-vs-android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-37742/
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc...android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-1043150/review
To the user, it seems like it's mostly UI improvements, making certain tasks easier to perform and monitor. Also, I heard ICS will automatically adjust to whatever screen resolution it runs on, so you won't need a different version to run on a phone vs a tablet (like honeycomb).
It seems the backend has been restructured as well, and while this probably won't be visible to the user, we can only assume that it will make the system run smoother and faster as a whole. I hope so, anyway.
So really, in a nutshell, ICS probably won't give your phone a bunch of features it doesn't have already, but it should make things run smoother, faster, and easier.
I'm not on contract, so I might upgrade IF I feel that ICS offers some things I can't live without, and I will get to test it soon on my HP Touchpad (CM team is working on a port right now). But for now, GB serves me well on my GS4G.
ICS
All i know is that my fast phone was made faster by the dev's here. Most of us appreciate the time spent as I enjoy sampling all the rom's.
If someone can port the ICS to our phone I am sure it will be that much better.
Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Devs are already working on CM7. Just give it some time. In the future I'll be developing for this phone as well.
