MR2 Coming Soon - Thunderbolt General

MR2 will be coming via OTA in the next couple of days MR2 has been through four different revisions and will be based on the 1.70.xx code. There are a number of fixes but the most important should be fixing the reboots and improving the 4G/3G transitions.
I know everyone is waiting for GB which is MR3, but it still needs some time. The good news is that it is being worked on it is already on its fifth SW revision.

Awesome. I can wait for GB no problem, I just want a fix for the reboots. I'm sick of my phone rebooting 5+ times a day, happy an update is coming soon.

OR... you could just scoot on over to the dev forum and pick yourself up a spiffy new rom built on MR2 which is quite solid and fast and will use the same or very similar radios to what will be in the OTA. I tried a couple of them. They are spartan on fancy stuff, but they are reliable if nothing else. Possibly the most functional and reliable roms over there.

Why does someone always have to pop intro threads like this and state the obvious. I'm sure everyone with a Thunderbolt that frequents these forums is aware that rooting and installing a custom rom is an option. Some people have their reasons for wanting to stay stock.
I for one am still stock because this is the first phone I've had in quite a while that the stock rom is quite good. I spent a long time on WinMo, so I am used to custom roms just the make the device functional. Right now custom roms on the TB are mostly just different, not necessarily a huge need to me (GB roms are debatable on this point).
Once the custom roms offer something I want that I can't get from stock (and mature a bit more), I'm sure I'll root and rom. For now I'm enjoying stock stability and a working camera. Just because someone can do something doesn't make it something they need to do.

My thoughts exactly. Sure I would like to avoid the reboots (given I have had 2 in a 3 week period), and maybe a faster better radio, but the software and sense is so solid.

Bingo.. agreed 100%
Coming from HTC devices like the 8525, ATT Tilt, and Touch Pro 2, Ive just about had my share of ROMs for a lifetime. I just want something that works. After paying all this money, Im gonna let Verizon and HTC do what they're supposed to do.

I agree with wanting an official update, but the stock rom is far from good. Yes the speed is good but the battery life is horrible. With custom roms I have been able to triple my battery life and limit the random reboots I was getting stock, along with the already good speed being improved. Das BAMF Stripped 1.8

agreed. So far only 1 reboot in 2 weeks (apparently that is good) and I get occasional instances where home button doesn't want to work.
I just wish the damn thing rebooted faster. It takes almost 2 minutes to boot, then another couple of minutes before sense is responsive.
Coming from the hd7 and 25 second boot times, this is killer...
I also made/used custom roms on my q9c, tp2 and hd2, but want to give stock a chance. Maybe I will root if I decide I need to tether, but so far, things are looking good stock.

"mr2" we leaked on the forums is NOT mr2. 1.66/1.67/1.68/1.69 will not be MR2.
I can confirm OP's comments on the current "mr2" candidate version number, and give a approximate release of july 6th. With verizon things are given to change, the release date can change, so can the version being released.

His comment was pretty blunt/unhelpful and rude, but there does tend to be some complaining from those that want to have their cake (those that don't want to root) and eat it too (still want updates/workarounds as quick as those that have root).
Those that seem to be frustrated by such things, perhaps android is not the phone for them or at least android phones that are not officially blessed by google (nexus phones).

DG's new rom? Speculation & rumor abound!

I've been doing a metric ton of reading before I flash my first rom. I was all set to flash P10.1 when I read a few posts by DG that led me to believe that Cog3 might be right around the corner.
Now I've read a further few posts by DG that state that Cognition is dead, because (his reasoning) Cog was always a pure-Captivate rom, & the latest rom he's working on isn't purely Captivate-based. Another few of his posts & accompanying posts by other users in those threads have led me to believe that whatever he's got cooking will be based on the "official" Rogers FroYo release. Maybe it's mostly based from that stock rom but has other add-ons from the i9000 line (i.e. to make it not pure-Captivate)?
After all my reading, I think that flashing a Captivate-based rom would be the way to go, if only for the fact that it would include the ability to utilize the sound processor (afaik, there aren't i9000-based roms that can do this, correct?).
Anyway, I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs since Monday waiting to see what DG's got in the oven & figured I'd start a thread to see what you all thought. This will be my first flash, & I don't plan to do a ton of switching around, so I want to get it "right" the first time.
tl;dr What's next from DG??
Just know that once you flash a rom, it wont be your last. DG roms are very good, along with Phoenix & Serendipity(my favorite).
I've flashed a handful of DG roms & I personally always find myself flashing back to one of Mikeys roms, he really knows his stuff.

Well last I thought DesignGears was working on the Gingerbread ROM for Galaxy S Phone ported from the Nexus S. And Supercurio was working with the Cyanogen Team on the project as well so maybe they're all in kahootz now. They haven't posted an update on it in awhile so maybe it's coming along good.
But it would be nice to get ahold of that Rogers Froyo, at a good stable point. At least then we'd have everything built for our Captivates specifically.

Right, & I believe that this is what's happening now. The Rogers Froyo that was just officially released via Kies is what I think DG's working with.
Am I totally off-base w/the Captivate/i9000/sound processor bit?
& yeah, I know what you all mean about constantly switching around, but I really only flashed a handful of times w/my old HTC. Guess I'm lazy
I started off as a noob, and basically still am. My first flash was cog 2.8 I believe. Now its something different every other day. You can't stop yourself one you've started.
Its an addiction for sure. Best of luck flashing once and that's it. I hope that works better for you than it did for me.
I'm so addicted that I got my wife a captivate also so I can try things on hers to see the differences from what I'm running.

As the poster above stated, many devs are working on an Armani JL1 rom right now. I am unsure what DG is doing/planning though. Just putting it out there.
Just like t-readyroc I've been holding off on my first flash. I don't think I can wait for official froyo any longer. I just keep thinking that once I flash a newer, more stable, rom will be released. So I don't know if I should wait or just take the plunge.
I'm still reading around on the most stable release. Any one have recommendations on a rom that is stable and easy to install.

See, for me, it's going to be the constant app/music/data restores every time that'll prevent me from being a flash-whore...
Anyway, to get back OT, one of the reasons I was really interested in P10.1 was the fact that the launcher works in landscape mode. Are there others that do the same?
& again back OT: Captivate/i9000 roms & the use (or lack thereof) of the Captivate's hardware audio processor - are there any kernels that work with i9000 roms that make use of it? Or are all i9000 roms stuck doing the processing in software?

it takes about 20 minutes from start to finish to flash a new rom for the complete process.
I said the same thing, "gonna find my fav rom and stick with it" That was a few years and phones ago and still flashing like crazy lol
But see, flashing whole new roms for the most part is almost a waste of time. Because usually why do you flash a new rom?
From the looks of a lot of ROM threads, going from release to release all the changes a lot of times are the installed system apps, and the themes to go with them. Yes, occasionaly there is a bigger release that warrants a new kernel or something of that nature.
To me, as an end user, ROM's could all use the same base rom (which they don't) and most people wouldn't know the difference. So find a ROM that doesn't force close on you, and flash the themes and apps you want into your ROM.
Personally I went from Flashing every ROM out there, and then just sticking to one that works, is deodexed so I can do whatever I want to it, and won't cause me to throw my phone in the trash.

Gingerbread vs Froyo on Captivate

Guys, just wanted to know your thoughts, if its advisable to move to GB on Captivate or remain on Froyo. In short, what are the advantages of moving to GB, over Froyo on Captivate, other than GB being the latest and greatest. I'm not sure if Captivate hardware at this point, can be supported completely by GB yet or other way around.
So let the discussion begin
I'm using miui and I love it. Had serendipity before and battery life is so much better with gb.

GR-12, I9000 reoriented vG.1.2 and UGKC1 modem works better than any other I9000 port I have ever used. GPS is way better without any "fixes" added!
Don't be fooled by the "glowing" testimonials. All the GB ROMs are still in development and have some issues. It just depends on whether you can live with those issues or not. If you need everything on your phone to work properly, stick with a Froyo-based ROM for now.

You mean that GPS is better on GB ? I never had any issues with GPS in all the latest Froyo ROM's.
I think GB is just better out of box! Better performance, FANTASTIC (comparatively) GPS, stability, and bragging rights to me friends (maybe that one is just me ha).
The only disadvantage is the lack of variety. There are GB ROMs surfacing, but it'll take time before we have more than maybe 5 to choose from, with 1 or 2 elites (well, that's with froyo as well regardless of the number of ROMs IMHO).
Basically, the choice is yours. I love GB, but it has presented some unforseen problems on some of my friends' phones and I've had to fix them (nothing major, just randomness).
There's my two cents!
Regards
Smith

Yea, to be frank, I did use a couple of GB ROM's and they were good, but lots of bugs still to be fixed. I personally felt the only 2 reasons to go to GB was bcoz it was the latest/greatest and some GB ROM's support Netflix

Here's the problem with anecdotal evidence, it only applies to the person giving it. What you consider to be "zero problems and full functionality" is only relevant to the way YOU use your phone. It doesn't mean everyone using that ROM will have the exact same experience because they likely don't use their phone exactly as you do. Reading the various GB ROM threads, there's enough people having issues ranging from minor to major to validate my statement. I don't have to use the ROM to see that. There's a reason "best ROM" threads get deleted or closed in here. It's because what works for one may not work for another. Rather than try to pass off my experience with a ROM I prefer to caution people not to accept the "glowing reviews" without a grain of salt. Maybe there'd be less people with problems if they were just a little hesitant to jump into flashing XYZ ROM based on those glowing reviews.
All gb based roms, as they are right now, are full of bugs/problems. Anyone who states otherwise is either a liar a fan boy or just doesn't know what they are talking about. Period.
GB roms have better battery life which is very important for me. and gallery flies : )

Here's the thing, GB is the future around here. Very little development is continuing on froyo roms. One very popular rom is being finished by it's developer and a few others are also being finalized. The focus is rapidly shifting to GB for obvious reasons, it's just better and has way more potential. Personally I've had no issues with it and find it every bit as stable as the best froyo roms.
You will never know if you don't try it how it will run for you, but reading threads and listening to people complain about this and that can be found in any rom thread, froyo or GB.

The problem is that because it is the next big thing, there are those who are jumping into it who have neither the expertise or ability to fix it when it goes wrong. I see people who haven't even mastered the simpler task of updating from Eclair to Froyo willing to start right off with the more complex procedure of flashing a GB ROM. Then many of those people (if they don't screw up the flash) end up trying to go back not knowing anything about the changed bootloaders and they end up in a world of hurt. The forums are filled with them and their issues. I'm all for experimentation, but human nature often overrides common sense and you get too many people who would rather jump feet first into the deep end and then come looking for someone to throw them a life preserver instead of putting on a flotation device before going into the water.

Thats a personal decision. I'm not about to tell someone not to try something, it should be their decision based on how comfortable they feel about the process. In reality it's more like 1 or 2% who end up with serious issues, I believe it was icezar who confirmed those percentages. If people take the time and read the instructions, it's no more difficult than flashing froyo. I remember a few bricks when froyo roms started appearing. Your always going to have some idiots who don't read first and get in trouble. Thats why all Devs post a disclaimer in their original posts. User beware no matter what you flash.

I haven't ran into any problems that have warranted switching back to Froyo ROMs yet. Sure, they're not as polished as some of the Froyo ROMs, but it's not something you can notice right off the bat anyways, unless you're a developer yourself and actually looks for bugs/problems.
Went MIUI a couple of hours ago.
Now i find myself restoring back apps on A3 via TiBu.
Spoiled by stablity.
GR-12 actually got me to use my Captivate again, and even though I sold it, it worked fine for everything I used it for. That's texting, talking on the phone, and GPS, to name a few. Bluetooth may not work while your streaming Pandora as you drive down the road using the calculator, but I didn't really try any of that.

[OFFICIAL] Gingerbread to start roll out tomorrow!

http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1818
As the notice says, what will start today "will be a limited pilot for the update" with "a broader rollout to myTouch 4G customers will begin in the coming weeks and will continue through the end of the year." It sounds like a lucky few MT4G owners could get the update today, but the majority will probably have to wait a few weeks, if not months.
I've had Gingerbread on my phone for a long time now.
My phone is rooted through Visionary, will this cause an issue with the OTA update?
You will not receive an OTA update while rooted.
Can someone make a Backup/ROM for new release.
I don't feel like going back to Stock just to get an update.
I updated the radio and phone is rooted. Don't want to have to give up root just to have a peek at this.

I'm sure one of our amazing devs will have rom for us in a couple days. The devs here are much faster than waiting for an OTA update.
i got my OTA update this morning at 745am central time.
Why do rooted users want an ota? That takes away the point us using xda, just equity for devs to make a better version with more features and fixes.

Because sometimes the stock rom is better than the custom built roms. It took a long time for me to find something that was nicer than the stock phone.
For me, a lot of the custom roms are themed in a way that looks terrible to me, and a lot of them just feel inconsistent. The stock MySense that came with the phone was much nicer to use. It wasn't until the Sense 3.0 roms started coming out that it made me actually want to switch away from stock.
I rooted to try new roms, but sometimes, stock is better ( for me at least ).

Then you wait for a stock rooted rom. Usually released in a few days after the official one (however for this update it was out about 2 days ago). If you update OTA you will lose root.
Running stock and rooted, that way I am able to change what I want to or leave it as is and have the ability to run apps requiring root

I guess I should have added the caveat that I went with the stock rom but root added. OTA somehow translated to stock with root in my head.

A lot of the custom roms while faster are buggy. I just upgraded from a Mytouch 3G and this phone is still amazingly fast to me, I don't need the extra speed.
I am not sure what advantages the OTA will have for most of us. The custom ROMs have removed all the bloat and are much faster. Additionally, most everyone running a custom ROM has already been using Gingerbread for months now.

that's why I rock stock, with root (for screen caps) nothing else. I like mine bug free and stable.

I've used many custom roms that are pretty much bug free , and sometimes even stock has bugs, there is no such thing as PERFECT BUG FREE CODE, I've never come across that.

Custom roms usually have the least bugs compared to stock roms not to mention that we get quicker fixes than what Google and HTC can give us. I'm pretty sure you probably not using the stock kernel. Most kernels bundle with stock are minimal line decent at best. Most of these roms in the mytouch community are bug free.

I had stock 2.2 on my original Glacier for about, oh, two hours or so before I got home and rooted/flashed CM7 to it. The power button broke within a month, though, so I unrooted it and switched it out for a new one.
The new one I rooted while waiting for the bus, and flashed CM7 on the bus ride to SF. So this phone has actually only had the stock ROM for less than 20 minutes.

If it's bug-free, wouldn't that also make it stable? Personally I don't need more than 1GHz, but I make a moderate overclock to 1.2GHz in order to reap the benefits of silky-smooth animations and scrolling widgets. App switching is also faster.
I run CM7 nightlies. Occasionally I run into bugs. Very infrequently. The most recent bug I encountered was random soft reboots in nightly #133, which was promptly fixed in nightly #134. Before that, the last bug I found was waaaaay back in 7.0.3 stable, when wifi refused to work properly with faux's AOSP kernel (and this isn't even a CM bug, it was an issue with faux's kernel).
CM7 has been stable enough to be a daily driver since 7.0.0 RC1.

slowing down - stay rooted???

ok... looks like the interest in the TB is waning. new phone options are coming available. posts and threads are slowing in this forum and others. development is slowing (Th3ory hasnt put out a new rom in like 1 1/2 weeks now ).
is it time to find one ROM for a daily and settle in? at some point will it make sense to convert the TB back to stock and run with verizon and its updates?
i probably will keep my TB for another year. any thoughts?
thanks

Yes interest in the TB is slowing and therefore so is development.
Yes newer phones are coming out
Switching to verizon and their updates is a turd choice though unless they come out with something utterly amazing and 0 DEV's here adopt it. Will never happen though unless the entire community is dead.

thanks, never meant to start an industrial-strength stupid thread. guess i was just wondering how long developers would be around pumping out new material, and whether or not people more experienced than me wouild be around for my gallacically stupid questions and such.

Sorry man, but I read that OP and thought "What is this guy thinking?!?!?" Go back to stock and take whatever Verizon dishes out? I don't grasp the mental process that would conclude that as an option. I don't think interest is waning. I'll check that dipstick after Verizon sells it for free, or close to it, which is usually when sales get real good. Th3ory isn't exactly a benchmark of ROM development either. In fact, cranking out ROMs at a rate of any more than once every month is kinda unusual. BAMF went nearly 2 months without so much as a revision. Chingy usually goes at least a month. I don't understand what the deal is with Synergy and their goofy nightlies... how much can you tweak something before it's junk? I point to Ziggy's kernels as having exceeded that limit.
I came from the dInc. When I left that device as a primary device I stopped paying much attention to the ROMs for it. Now when I go and look around over there, there's heaps of devs I never heard of (a few with egos WAY too big for their sig), cranking out ROMs of all sorts. I know they hate to admit it over there, but the dInc is DEAD. If you want to see a device that seems dry on interest, visit the dInc2 forums, or some of the Motorola device forums. Or a LOT of forums, really. I don't know where you think devs are going since there isn't actually a better device worth upgrading to on Verizon. And don't say the Bionic; that thing was obsolete almost the day it launched, and the launch of the Inc HD WILL kill it. If you don't think a lot of the dev from that device will trickle down here, may I point you to all the stuff from the EVO 3D that's already made it's way here.
@ loonatik78...
yeah i guess after re-reading my OP it's kind of hard to take seriously. the TB is my first smart phone. never even knew there were forums like this that supported the phone, nor had i even a clue that these things could be rooted and modifed in such a way. certainly glad i googled my way XDA.
support has been wonderful here, and frankly find your posts well worth reading. thanks.

as for going back to stock - well not a chance.
Even if it's the end of the line for sense updates (as far as from verizon), there will be updates to AOSP ROMs like CM7 and OMFGB long after as many phones have.
Switch to a new ROM? For example, Synergy has many updates a week currently and shows no sign of a stopping point in the future. Not to mention the ROM is completly badass and runs smooth like buttah
When was the Tbolt released, Jan or Feb of this year ? Interest will wane around Spring '13... A lot more people keep their phones for the two years or so that VZW "rewards" than you think. It's been what, six months ? The HTC Eris forum is still going strong, just as an example!

If only aosp roms had working nfl app and gps for me. Even with fixes, most apps that use gps either put me across the world, or just error out.
Guess if dev stalls, I might just have to learn to build roms myself.

First off GPS works fine, second yea, the NFL app is still wonky but I strongly believe there are better alternatives on the market.
Second I would say go to OMFGB, since our phone is in their tree, any updates they make go to our phone, so even when we are forgot about we will still recieve updates as long as their team is around.
Also, synergy is not a bad choice (Especially if you like daily updates), BAMF forever would be a good choice as well. It was just released and runs super smooth. Plus updates are coming every 2 or 3 days at most.
Also, (And hopefully, final) we should be getting a Sense 3.5 port soon, (Team BAMF is currently spearheading that operation).
So sorry to tell you but development is still going strong.

sorry, but I'm not the only one having problems with gps on aosp ROMs. It's not just getting a working signal before flashing. Even after doing that and maps finding me ok, most apps that need gps to find you, such as search, gasbuddy, etc, end up placing me at least 2 miles away unless wifi is on.
It's ok, really don't mind sense ROMs. I freeze, uninstall a lot of sense parts and use different launchers. Playing with shell 3d right now.

Building has proved challenging but as far as taking a leak and debloat deoxed and add root busy box WiFi tether that is very easy. Even adding a custom kernel is very easy. Tweaking extra settings is where I am lost right now such as RAMdisk edits and other such tweaks need info.

built them on winmo, both tp2 and hd2. Just haven't had time to read up enough on android. But if it becomes a necessity, I will find the time.

Custom Roms: No longer the "must do" they once were?....

Ok, so im moving from the htc sensation XE to the HTC one.
During my time with the sensation, i pretty much put on every rom/kernal/patch etc and the in the end, im posting this from a stock rom.
Why?
Well, i found that not one custom Rom worked 100%. The CM ROMs especially, with poor camera, poor scrolling and poor telephone.
ARHD became unbearable, with FC's and Permission bugs, the Sense 4 ROMs were slow and on and on.
Coming back to stock, after using ROMs which (apparently ) have been super optimised, I don't notice much difference in performance tbh. Battery life is similar, speed is similar etc.
YMMV on this one, but whatever.
In fact, the stock Rom just works
So, fast forward to two more iterations f the smart phone, and I believe the immense power now available should mean that the "optimization" ROMs, CM etc are becoming pointless. There is ample power to run the stock Rom no matter how bloated it is.
Some exceptions would be a slow roll out of updates from your carrier though.
Anyway, after flashing so much, and reverting back to stock, I'm not going to be in a rush to put a custom Rom on the One when it comes.
Even rooting it, I may hold off for a while. I'm just not sure these days what the point is.
Why knacker up the warranty?
Pah!
Different people have different uses/needs. All custom ROMs pretty much worked on my HD2 (although it's an exception since it originally had WinMo) and all of them work smoothly on the N4. Different devices also have different bugs, so you can't base the entire decision on your experience with only one device. As for why you'd want to flash one if you're OK with performance, the answer is that some of them have tonnes of features and UI enhancements. Take PA over stock 4.2.2 for example, or an AOSP based ROM over TouchWiz.
I have been thinking the same for all the reasons mentioned. I would like Titanium and Nandroids and some status bar themes. But, otherwise, for me, custom roms may not offer much. And, they do seem to have their own quirks. The stock roms and better processors now days can stand on their own for most folks. Having flashed hundreds of roms, there has been many occasions were I did something and said "Oh S--T" I am bricked. Luckily I have always been able to recoup. I am looking at the One and S4 and may root after a bit, but may not flash a custom rom. My One S had no issues running with the bloatware. But, who knows after so much flashing it may be hard to stop.

This is where alot of people get confused. The point of making a custom rom was never for everyday people to be flashing them, They were for developers to try new things and see what they could make happen. Does this break things? Yeah from time to time but that is all part of learning.
That's all true also DK. It does depend what we want from phone and if we want the risks of flashing. I have done it long enough and maybe just getting old and tired. It takes a lot of time to keep up with the roms and not have to rely on others for all your info. Although XDA was/is a dev forum, it has also benefited in member growth with all the people now interested in flashing.
I think it is more likely with the new phones that some will not see the need to flash a custom rom as much as they wanted/needed to say 3-4 years ago.
Either way it is still a personal choice and more than likely I will still flash whether I need to or not--

Oh trust me If it wasnt for the crapware and bloat OEMs added to their devices and the absolute UGLY look to them I may not feel a NEED to flash a custom rom but with the listed things for me it is still very needed. Mainly the UGLY. I can deal with a bit of lag but it better be good looking while it lags lol
agreed--
