I'm trying to root my replacement Sensation. However, I'm getting stuck at a very dumb spot. I downloaded HTC Sync from HTC. Now, during install it just hangs while trying to install msxml 4.....
I've let it sit there for over an hour and it just constantly says "installing". And my CPU monitor consistently reads 1% - 2% cpu usage which is a good indicator that nothing is even happening.
I tried Googling the issue but everyone else with HTC Sync install issues are getting an error of some sort. I'm not getting an error at all. It just sits there. I've tried rebooting, redownloading, disabling antivirus, disabling firewall... everything.
I do not get this. I'm stuck at probably the most simple step of the entire rooting process. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I tried
Will it let you cancel the install without force quitting the installer?
Maybe you could try manually installing MSXML:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/search.aspx?q=msxml
I know that HTC Sync takes AGES to install (I have it on XP, Vista and Win 7 and they've all take a long time...not an hour though!).
BTW what OS are you on? Have you tried running the installer as Administrator in the compatibility tab on the file properties (shouldn't have to but still...)
Good luck

Ok...for the last week, my phone has been resetting itself randomly. It started when I had LucidREM's apps to sd. I then flashed The Dudes cupcake build (.93) and I'm still having problems. Anyone know the issue? I tried flashing to different builds, and wiping the phone doesn't solve the issue...

one of your apps is causing that boot loop..
what are some of the apps you have on your g1 ?
some of the power manager, and home screen apps conflict with the OS and cause reboots... if not redownload the rom, it might have been corrupted...
when your phone boots up after app move, give it time to finish moving the apps, as long as the android doesnt turn off and back on during the boot process its still moving apps.
I've had this exact issue on multiple Cupcake based releases. After a TON of testing, I found out what it was for me. All my apps were compliant and with 50 apps and almost hundreds of personalized settings, I refuse to do a complete wipe and start over. Do you have auto-sync enabled? I found if I disabled that, it stopped rebooting. There was no issue when I manually sync either. It was only when auto-syn was checked and it attempted to do a sync.
I know settings.apk, settingsprovider.apk, and in some builds sync.apk are part of this process. Does anyone know any other files involved. I have tried replacing these three to no avail. I found if you update and acore crashes from Haykuro to JF, all you have to do is adb remove contacts.db and then sync your contacts because the file itself is incompatible. Same with messaging and gmail. I am hoping it is just a similar instance. Usually, it's been possible to move between builds by just removing the db files for the syncable apps, as HTC and google used two different program styles.
Temporary fix: Turn off auto-sync and use WiSync. Do not enable auto-sync anywhere in the program, but enable force sync on wifi connection and all three force options. This is nowhere near a permanant solution, but if you wifi enable on charge like I do, you will sync when charging. Manual sync still works for other times, but this will at least sync everything in one shot without having to go through manually.

I think you were right! I uninstalled power manager, and some battery widgets that were useless on the cupcake builds anyway and haven't had the issue since. Thanks a lot for the tip.
Thank you also, twistedumbrella. If for some reason the problem crops up again, I'll try your advice.
I am having terrible difficulty getting my phone to connect via HTC sync. All of the drivers are installed, it says it see's my phone properly, but it remains disconnected at all times. One time out of maybe 10 or 15 it will work, but I cannot get it working consistently. I am using 32bit Win 7, and I'm not sure what the heck is going on. The only version of Sync I've been successful connecting with is 2.05. 2.08 has never worked.
Am I missing something? Doing something wrong? Its making it impossible for me to get things done on my phone, and its driving me mad. I keep uninstalling and reinstalling. I keep rebooting my phone, etc. I'm at my wits end.
it never worked for me, but at the same time i never needed it
Are you sure the drivers are properly installed? Are you able to use adb? I've heard (and experienced) there's trouble getting the drivers to install properly on Windows 7. If they aren't properly installed, you can install them manually:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/24/workaround-for-htc-hero-sync-problem-in-windows-7/
If they are installed properly, are you seeing the HTC Sync notification on your phone when you plug it in? There's a sync "daemon" on the phone that makes the connection to the computer. Is it possible you removed it? I'm not sure what apk it is.
Hardly ever, I just use the Google clouds to do my synching...and there are issues with that
It says the drivers are properly installed. My phone is rooted, and I've used adb when I can get the phone to sync. I get errors when I'm using the command line at other times. I don't know if there is a way to use adb shell if the phone isn't synced. Thats what bothers me. For instance, I tried to get # while not sync so I can install the new 1.5.1 recovery image. When I go adb shell I get this line
/ #
instead of just
#
I'll try to manually install the drivers, and see how that goes. Thanks for the replies.
Sync doesn't play nice with Vista 64 thus no sync for me.
What I did was export all of my contacts stuff to a .csv file and uploaded it into my gmail account then did a sync with gmail.

sync doesn't play nice with many people at all
Im getting really pissed about this issue with adb.
I updated HTC sync, then it worked fine untill i disconnected phone.
Then i did the workaround with drivers that is posted all around internet, but it did not help.
Has anyone got any other solutions than manual install of drivers or updating htc sync?
I feel like searching for solutions for 4 hours is enough for me.

Sync won't work if adb is running.
Kill adb.exe
Sync doesn't play at all on my wife's lappy but works perfectly on my pc and lappy. Go Figure!!
Workaraound worked for me
I was referred to the workaround already referred to at mydigitallife by HTC customer service and it worked fine for my HTC Hero (Telus). Although my phone was never listed as My Htc Phone like the directions state, just plain old Android phone. Nevertheless, the workaround worked for me.
Windows 7 64 bit with HTC Hero (Telus).
I found that while sing windows 7 (x86 or x64) Windows kept reloading a ASUS/Gamin driver for the ADB.. so what I did after installing the HTC sync was to open device manager and open the ADB device and right click on the device and uninstalled the offending device.. and selected REMOVE driver/software when it asked..
then all was good.. and it used the "My HTC" or DREAM driver.. and worked fine...
again...if you remove all instances of the driver and start over, following these directions, it should work.

I installed the new HTC Sync Manager, but when it attempts to detect my phone, my laptop goes BSOD. I've tried to rebooting the phone, but it doesn't help. Anyone else having this problem?

I also had this problem. I think I just reinstalled the Sync Manager and it worked fine, but I also remember some hiccup involving the order I started up Sync Manager, plugged in the phone, and told the phone to go into "sync" mode. If reinstalling doesn't help try playing with that order. Sorry I don't remember specifically what I had to do, but I did have that problem and eventually got it to work.
Has anyone installed the optional update kb2962407 (published 6/10/2014) on their Windows RT 8.0 Device? I installed it last night and after rebooting the jailbreak hangs at "getting signing level". I've been using version 1.13a for a long time now, so I went and downloaded 1.20 which got stuck at the same spot. System doesn't crash or BSOD or anything, just nothing further happens in the PowerShell window. It should prompt for the volume up, down etc. I know it was well past the two minute uptime. Tried rebooting a few times too.
Fortunately after uninstalling this update the jailbreak started working again. Big sigh of relief...
Just curious if anyone else has experience issues with this update and the jailbreak?
Recently I can't seem to get FB Messenger to update. Tried several times. Cleared the apps cache, reboot my tablet etc all to no avail. So I tried reinstalling it, but after I removed the app it no longer will install anymore either.
When attempting to update, and now reinstall, it manages to download successfully, but once it hits the installation phase it just sit there saying, "installing" nonstop. Won't let me stop the installation or anything. I have to force close the play store in order to get it to stop.
So....Any ideas on how to fix this and why it's happening ? I am pretty savvy when it comes to Android and tech in general, and can fix anything that I run into, but the solution to this has eluded me and it's rather frustrating lol. Any help is greatly appreciated.
It's just too much for this tablet. I had this bug on three different devices with 1gb of ram running 5.0 or newer software. You can downgrade to 4.4 or use messenger lite.
