[Q] Which phone should I get - General Questions and Answers

Basically I am looking at
SGSII
Samsung Captivate II
Google Nexus (The new one coming out)
I don't mind waiting till it comes out. I am buying them outright, also I use a pay as you go plan, and I don't think I will need a data plan, as I have wireless pretty much everywhere.
Thanks

from the rumors, def wait for the new google nexus.

Since you're willing to wait, then I suggest waiting for the Nexus Prime. If you wanted to buy one now, then it would be the SGS II.

nexus prime is almost here cant you wait 3 more months?

I have the HTC inspire 4G big bucks but worth it .
K4GET

Check out HTC Vigor (Thunderbolt 2 ?).
I'm looking at phones now too and I think I'm most likely going with the HTC Vigor, which I've just read may end up being the Thunderbolt 2. I believe it will be out around Oct. 5-6. Really nice rumored specs, if they are correct it is a fantastic phone.
I might wait until the Nexus Prime comes out to see what that has but if it's a few months my old phone may not make it until that one comes out. Not sure when it's releasing.
What is the pay as you go you are using and is it a nationwide option? My contract is up and I was going to switch to Verizon with the new purchase but I'm curious if you end up saving money doing it your way? The cost of the phone is a lot more, how long does it take for you to recup that? How much do you use the phone and how much do you end up spending per month? I really don't use my current phone that much but it's not a smartphone so I expect my usage to increase once I get a new one.

3 Months? I don't want to wait too long. I thought it might come out in October?

On theprimesmartphone.com it says november

Anyone hear carriers for HTC Sensation SE? This or the Vigor look very promising as long as one hits Verizon.

Darn, I don't want to wait that long, considering the phone I have now is about 7 years old and the backlight doesn't work.
I hear the SGSII is a good phone. I think I would perfer something that is made by Samsung.

I am on Rogers pay as you go, I do the 100$ a year option. Basically I don't use that money up, I use my phone rarely, however, when I get this new phone, it may change (Considering it is like going from a a win95 computer to a win7). If I had a plan, I believe it would be at least 30$ a month, so in about 3 months, I would pay the same amount I would normally in a year. Buying it outright is still cheaper considering that you are probably locked for a 3 year contract.
If I got a SGSII, I would pay 600$ for the phone, and then 300$ for 3 years of pay as you go, so 900$. If I got a plan for 3 years, it would be 170$ + 50$x12x3 = 1970$, (It said a minimum amount of 50$/month), so yea, I am saving 1000$ although, I don't use my phone too much, so if you are a big talker, and you go through the 100$ in less than 2 months, a plan would be better.

Personally I would choose Desire.
thanks, i see the only diff.is fm radio and more ram on the desire everything else is exactly the same .but does any one know if tmobile usa is getting it or i have to spend a couple of hundred bucks to get one over seas...or just get nexus.....? what do you think..
The desire: is sexier, has better RAM, is thinner without compromising the screen size, have tactile buttons that makes you certain that you pressed a function key, and have an optical track-pad.
Keep in mind that if you have sticky hands due to sticky food, beverages, work, and etc, than you shouldn't get the Nexus 1. Once those things are in your trackball, you literally can't get them out. And once they are in, than the trackball will stop working, just like every other BlackBerry with those trackballs.
Basically, the Desire is better than the Nexus 1.
If you are buying a Desire in regards to Nexus 1 as a contender, than get the Desire.
If you have a Nexus 1 and a decided to buy a Desire, than you are making a huge mistake because you aren't getting enough improvements through this upgrade.
There you have it! The word upgrade should answer everything.
thanks ,i knew it desire was better, tmobile just told me that if i get desire it wouldn't work here in los angeles ,so guess i have to stick with nexus, and i will save 250 buck too, oh well may be in a couple of month i give this one to my chick and i get a better one lol
I don't think there is a desire available with t-mobile's 3g bands while there is a nexus with them, so you might want to consider that.
I personally like the look of the N1 better, but that is completely subjective. Whether you think sense UI is worth it is completely subjective too. Same with the capacitive buttons.
The only thing that objectively makes the desire better is the FM radio, and a bit more ram (which will be required by sense anyway).
The nexus one has a noise cancelling speaker for when you are on calls, and i don't know if the desire is rootable yet.
According to the site linked, the nexus one is slightly thinner.
Also i used 2 blackberrys over 2 years and only had trackball problems on the older model, which was second hand anyway. The trackball is the primary navigation tool on the BB, it is only secondary, or thirdary on the N1, so i don't believe it to be an issue.

yeah your right is not going to be the primary just like bb, well thanks to all you guys for all the advise..peace
Its a matter or personal preference I'm afraid...the specs bewteen the devices or almost identical. I'm getting the HTC Desire (hopefully within the next week), but again this is just my own personal preference as I think its better
I now have the Desire - and I'm not regretting my choice. SenseUI is good, and the speed of the phone (when compared to an outgoing Hero) is immense. I've also owned an iPhone in the past, and I can honestly say that this phone trumps the Apple effort (except in Apps).
I would recommend the phone to anyone - but once someone sees it, they don't need recommendations.

as you can see from the enormous line, the phone is total win.
this was taken 10 minutes before they opened.
p.s. that lady just wanted a new battery for her phone and was upset that the store was still closed.
oh man.....
Heh this makes me laugh. I was pissed this morning when I had to head down to the VZW store to get a battery for a work colleague. I was expecting to have to wait forever. They had all these roped off areas with red carpet laid down and not one person standing in line.
I think with the upcoming Rezound and Galaxy Nexus, most people will wait to compare all three before making a decision. I know I will.

we've already compared y0.
No one in their right mind is getting the RAZR, so it just comes down to the other 2.
And it's not that the Nexus is better then the Rezound(or vice versa)... just moreso which one is more suited to the individual's needs/tastes.

Noob Question
I'm sorry that I don't get this Moto bashing. Sure the first gen Razrs were well, not all that great, but they did their jobs well. Hey they were the most phones sold worldwide.
Either way, the new one looks pretty decent, what's the bad about it? The specs were not all that bad, from what I saw, so why the hate?

Nice phone except for the locked and encrypted bootloader, and the non-removable battery. Have fun with your Moto iPhone.

the screen is horrible compared to the rezound and galaxy nexus. Non-removable battery is another potential problem. The phone is very wide and doesn't feel comfortable in the hand at all.
Just came back from best buy looking to play with the rezound, razr and kindle fire.
1. Razr battery was dead, was locked up in a cabinet instead of on display. Got to hold it but wouldn't stay on.
2. Only 1 Rezound in stock and none on display, asked why, they said they haven't really set up for it.
3. Fire hadn't even arrived yet to be put on display.
Total fail by best buy. Best Buy, The Borders of 2012.

heh.. the Best Buy Mobile in the mall here had 'dummy' RAZR & Rezound phones on display. They said they have Rezounds in stock, but have yet to receive any RAZR's.
reminds me of when the hd7 launched on t-mobile. Had to go to 3 stores to find one that even had a demo unit. None of them had set up for it on launch day. Sad that carriers don't get it. If you advertise the phone, it will sell.
Yeah I don't particularly care for the RAZR (or any Motorola products). That being said, I got to play with the RAZR and it was okay. The screen sounds bad on paper, but in person, its not the end of the world. Screen was passable, still totally usable. My store actually sold just 1 RAZR, but it was a more of a swap than a return. Haha.
But then I got to play with the Galaxy Nexus and that screen was muchhhh nicer. ICS was all flashy, and to be quite honest, a bit confusing, but I guess that's expected since a lot has changed.
Also played with the Rezound and I very much liked that phone. Screen was also beautiful, and still quality HTC build materials.

The first T-Mobile store that I went to had a live demo sitting behind the counter. I got to play with it while they activated my HD7. This was a week before the actual release day too. But yes, I agree, having phones out helps to sell them.
I entered the 11/11/11 sweepstakes on Verizon's Twitter and i won a free Droid Razr, nice! I will be giving it to my wife maybe of she performs ( insert lude sex act here ) for a ( insert a crazy lenght of time here ) I wish it came a few days back I mean come on I just bought her a phone off ebay for 100 bucks.

Brand new surface pro with blacklight bleeding

Hello.
It kills me to admit that my brand new $ 1200 surface pro has some light bleeding around the botton right and right areas of the screen.
Ive looked it up a but and it seems that this was an earlier issue so I actually didnt think there would be a chance I would end up facing this problem. I havent seen any complaints throughout may-june.
Here are 2 pics:
First one is with the place lit at the boot screen.

Second one is with lights out, black image on full screen.
They are both with brightness at 100%, but it really doesnt make that much differene if it's set to 50%.
What do you guys think? I shouldnt be expecting those right? I know that people had much worse bleeds once, but that was before.
I also dont want to keep exchanging till I get a good one, that's too much of a hassle. So if you tell me that all of them are probably be the same I wont exchange.
It bugs me that such an expensive device would present this kind of irritating and ugly problem after 6 months in production.
Warranty claim. Your entitled so why not :/
The thing is im visiting canada right now, and thats where I bought it. The store is called future shop.
Im still within the 14 return/exchange period.
And now im seriously thinking whether I should return it for good, keep mine or get it replaced, hoping the new one would be free from defects.
Get it replaced under warranty. At FutureShop, ideally, but any Microsoft store should replace it no trouble. That's definitely a defect; the backlights shouldn't be *visible* in that way at all.

But what if the next one is the same or even worse? Isnt it likely that he whole batch sent to the sae store would have the same production issues?
Test it before you take it home, get a refund if they can't provide a non-defective model? Leaving aside the fact that it's highly unlikely that an entire production run has a visually obvious defect, this is Consumer Electronics 101. Hell, it's Being A Customer 101. If somebody sold you a defective toaster, you'd take it back under warranty. If somebody sold you a defective Ferrari, you'd take it back under warranty.
I agree. Keep asking for one till you get one that satisfies you. You paid for it, so you deserve to get a fully functional product.

Thanks guys. You encouraged me. The thing is Im aware how most stores behave when such things happen. They will start to make things difficult, creating excuses and so on and on. I hate that.
Also, could you give me some ideas on how to test it for light bleeding in a bright lit store?

request to take it to a storage cupboard?
Here in the UK if a shop starts being awkward normally just just whip your phone out, make it highly obvious that your searching for the trading standards number, perhaps going as far as almost pressing the dial button and then they'll usually give in but from what I hear the US equivalent of trading standards are useless so shops might ignore the same threat.

You're right. That's why I always buy from stores that have great customer service. Microsoft store and apple store at good examples. They just replace it till you're happy
I've had issues like this with my ipad back when I had it. Its not normal and you shouldnt have any trouble getting it replaced if you take it into the shop again. They should know about these things.

Unlocked or Carrier Specific. What is the difference

Seems right.. With the US models being bootloader locked, which prevents you from customizing your phone.. What is the advantage now of buying a complete unlocked phone over a carrier specific one? I mean if you buy a carrier one upfront no monthly payments, you could have them unlock the phones. I'm considering on purchasing a new phone next month. But not sure which to buy yet.. So I do not want to spent say $200 more for a unlocked device if there is not going to any real advantage over a carrier specific device.
Most phones cost the same unlocked or locked..but being unlocked you can go to any carrier you want with no contract or them keeping your phone hostage.
I have a AT&T Note 10+ and recently bought the unlocked version.
I thought there be a big difference. Not so at least with Samsung. Less the AT&T software my package disabler list was near identical for both.
Net difference just about zero.
The unlock version functions the same on the AT&T network. Simply slammed in the sim card and it was good to go. However I don't use wifi or video calling so no idea if that's the same.
If you go with a AT&T phone plan to buy once you reach the 1 or 2 years mark you could pay it off and save a couple hundred dollars which is what I did. Do whatever works best for you.
If you like the Notes a used N10+ is another option. They are still available new too. I'm not impressed with the Samsung flagships that followed the N10+ as they are inferior in a number of ways. Because of this I bought a new N10+ running on Android 10 and avoided being forced to use 11 or 12 which suck pretty bad, especially 12. So I have twins now.

That is why I'm considering just buying a phone locked phone. I do see sellers selling the unlocked version for far more than the carrier specific ones. Since I'm buying in cash I can have it unlocked right from the start.... I'm with t-mobile currently and have the A52 5G. This is the only phone in yrs I have financed... At the end of April, I'm paying it off, but still not sure which phone to purchase.. I have had various makers, but usually like the Samsung... Been looking at the Note 10+ and the S21 Ultra.. Not going to buy the newest unless it had a great deal.. But either way my phone and the wife's Iphone 13 pro max she wants, will be paid in full at the time of purchase...

My 4G unlimited data plan with AT&T is grandfathered and cheap. I would lose it going to 5G along with battery life for questionable speed gains.
My oldest N10+ is 2.5 yo and the only repair is a replacement battery, no big deal. It looks and runs like new in spite of very heavy usage. The display is still perfect, no dead pixels or degradation. It supports a V30 SD card up to 1tb which I'm upgrading to from a 512gb one. The beast is a work horse that gets 8-10 hours SOT once optimized*. It's display while 60hz has a better color rendering index than probably even the newest variable refresh rate displays and definitely better than the N20U. Great for pics and vids. A near perfect white point and gamma profile. Excellent color management that the variable refresh rate displays lack as they are extremely hard to calibrate.
It's form factor is better than all the newer Samsung flagships. Only 7mm thick and the camera assembly sits almost flush to the rear cover.
The cam and vid capabilities are very good, while laser AF be nice it's AF works well. The spen sits where it should if you're right handed, on the right not the left side. One downside is the longer latency of the N10+ spen then the newer models, but it has all the spen tricks including the bt remote shutter release. As far as processor and ram speed it's snappy and with 12gb of ram it doesn't run out of ram. Bonus if you get one running on Android 9 or 10, no cpu cycling sucking scoped storage to slow it down or get in your hair. The current OS load on this one will be 2 yo in June, still fast, stable with minimal maintenance. Part of my decision was the no learning curve and easy set up for a second one.
&
It's just fun to use.
*my N10+'s are heavily optimized both with settings as well as with Package Disabler. A good case is mandatory, I'm using the Zizo Bolt. A great case that easy to hold, doesn't attract dirt and has sucked up close to a dozen 2-4 foot drops onto concrete with zero phone damage.
Stock N10+ customized using free Samsung icon packs, the Goodlock family of apps and free 3rd party apps like Digi Clock and Double Tap.

Question Annoyed with Samsung support.

I registered my phone when I got it. Then had a problem with the battery draining badly (like 20% overnight) and wifi going in and out. So, I went through the portal as pictured, they sent me a box to ship it from Ma to Texas, then promptly refused to look at it because it's Tracfone and are sending it back unrepaired.
Now is it me or does that say I have a warranty til 10/11/2023 on my Galaxy A53 5G 128GB (Tracfone)?
I'm just checking, because it looks to me like Samsung is refusing to honor the warranty I have here. Heck, like I said, they even paid for the shipping and my warranty clearly states it's a Tracfone. Why pay to have me send it out if they were going to do that. $##t like this gets me fuming, but I'm trying not to have another heart attack. I get on Samsung support chat somehow and they said they don't have the parts for Tracfone A53, and I called BS because an A53 is an A53, only the software is different and its already in the phone. Got nowhere. They were supposed to call me back an hour ago, never got the call.

UPFATE: I now have been promised a callback on 3 separate occasions. I have yet to receive a call. I did get a text today saying my phone was received and it will take up to 4 days to repair, But in reality they refused to look at it and it was shipped back 6 days ago. What incompetence...

I called straight talk last week and the guy was trying to talk me out of it because he said they're going to give me a used phone. I'm like this one isn't working; I need another one. So, he set it up to have me send it back, only he didn't. Never got an email, the box, or anything. But that's beside the point, I clearly have a valid Samsung warranty. I really don't want the hassle. Samsung support sucks, all set with Samsung. At least with iPhone I could walk into an apple store no matter what carrier and get a replacement in 10 min as long as I was within the warranty period.

Exactly what is the point then?
Try taking it to a Samsung experience center at a Best buy. Or if you used a MC or Visa card to buy it do a charge back through the bank. That's all I got.
Apples suck as bad as Samsung support...

The point is I have a warranty and Samsung wont honor it. They had me ship it to Texas (1500 miles?) knowing what it was. I bought at Walmart and it's too late to return it. I paid cash, have receipt but too late. So Samsung support sucks.
Apple sucks a lot less support-wise. No 2 ways about it. The 2 times in the past 14 years I had an issue with an iPhone I was able to walk out with a replacement in less than a half hour. There really is no comparison. I don't like that you can't change your own battery, or replace your OLED screen without losing some functionalities, but as far as support goes it's night and day.
