[Q] Unable to S-OFF using XTC Clip - HTC ChaCha

I just got an XTC Clip and am unable to S-OFF after following instructions. I'm attempting this on a Telus HTC Status. Can someone walk me through this, if the S/W's instructions were incorrect? Thanks.

Whe you run XTC-Software, there is step-by=step guide how to do this, what do you think, what we should write more?

I followed the step-by-step. There's one step which is contradictory:
The s/w instructs me to hit Power button for Diag, but it only works when I hit the Volume-Down button. I think that the s/w refers to the ChaCha when it says "HTC Click".
I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong, as others have done this successfully. Will try again.

Yes, you doing everything ok. There is mistake in step-by-step guide.
When you generate goldcard and put in on phone, run bootloader it will start init. Diag module. Need to wait until you will see question "Vol+Up = Diag?" or something like that. Then you will go to diag module when will be Clear ... option. You activate this option by presing power button.

Doesn't work. I go all the way until the last step: “Clear s58 Data” and press the Power button to select. Then the phone simply reboots (it does NOT give me an option to clear security). Any ideas? Thanks.
EDIT: I think I found the problem. The SIM adapter supplied with the XTC clip isn't the same size as a regular SIM. Hence, it doesn't get inserted completely, as it doesn't "click" into place. Therefore, I suspect a connection issue I can't do anything about. Is there a place where I can purchase an XTC Clip SIM adapter that is the same size as the SIM and can "click" into place? Thx.
PS> I also tried a factory reset before trying to S-OFF.

Yeah, there is a problem with this cables, but there is a simply solution provided on xtcclip forum. You simply need to put some extra layer of sticky paper on pack of sim connection. And for simple reason, stick wire that going from xtc box to the case.

Tried that, doesn't work. The SIM adapter simply isn't staying in there fully. It needs to "click" into place, which it doesn't

Yeah, I know what you have on mind. I have that same problem, but I use my SIM card to push XTC Cable on place with proper "click" sound. First be sure that you take out your sim card probler - bu click-out, to have possible do to click-in.
And be sure, that you using correct cable

It worked! I used a dummy SIM card to push the XTC cable all the way in until it stuck (had to try a few times until it stuck). It's now S-OFF. Thanks for all your help!

Sucessfully S-Off but not unlocked
I got the s-off to work finally... You need to double check that the cables are in the right way round and make sure the sim card is fully in until it clicks by using another sim to push it in fully...
Only problem is it didn't unlock the phone like it says it would...
I put a different sim card in but still not accepting
anyone got a solution

Interesting. I had it unlocked via code before using the Clip to S-OFF, so not sure if it would have worked for me either. Perhaps iDAREK can help.

mmh got my XTC Clip Today ...
i alway get the reboot-bug .. tried the paper mod and without the mod .. nothing works
i am out of ideas at the moment

chnage the battery ...

after about 30 retries and a lot of papermodding ... it finally worked and i am S-OFF now ...

Congratulations and welcome to the free world!

It is fiddly to get all the connections exactly right...
Well done!

I am experiencing trouble too ... I have gotten the faux sim card to push in with the aid of a real sim card (one of the supplied flex cables had an end that was very much like the ChaCha's Sim card size and shape ... does anyone know what side of the cable you should stick into the SIM card slot?), but I still get a locked phone ... it does look like I may have unlocked the carrier though, as that option in HBoot is blue? There is one step that confuses me, and is not listed in the XTC Clip program on PC - it says something about calibration, and needing to get the phone into horizontal mode ... I tried vertical and horizontal, no luck. Just reboots back to default, except once when I got "Verify Str not found CID Write Error NG CID Set FAIL!" that happened on two tries. On the other tries there was no indication if the Clip worked or not, until I went back into HBoot and saw "S-On". I had not gotten any request on the phone or the computer to disable security check or anything like that. Also, I initially could not get the Clip to turn on, after trying several USB ports. I plugged it into a wall socket USB outlet and it worked! After that I was able to plug it into the same USB ports that failed before ... I bought the XTC Clip because of the madness surrounding the HTC Dev bootloader unlocking method (my phone is AT&T Status at 2.14, not 1.23) and even paid a GSM shop to root it. They didn't but at least I was able to get money back. I ordered the XTC Clip as this fourm and YouTube vids made it seem easy ... It would really help if XTC would have had a detailed guide with pictures on their website, if not with the product!

Oh, I haven't stuck on sticky paper just yet ... the faux sim card end seemed to be pretty secure, even after closing the battery cover.

Sim socket connector loose?

@mod: sorry i posted in the wrong forum, please move to General, thanks
Hey everybody,
i just dropped my phone from about 30 cm on concrete floor.
everything seemed to be allright, only after i turned off the cellular radio in the Comm Manager and turned it on again shortly after, my phone was reporting that i have not inserted a Sim card....
After several soft resets, and trying my sim in other phones, i suppose a cable/connector in the phone got loosened by the fall.
I do not have access to HTC repair services or any other repair options, but i think i can manage to fix it myself as long it is no hardware damage.
IF anybody knows how to( instructions or likely), i would be happy to hear it..
Also ive seen the "how to replace LCD/ dismantle device" instructions but they seem to involve dissembling the whole phone into parts.
Thanks guys

yea dude your gonna have to take your phone apart . . .like you said you can follow the instruction for LCD replacement guide (LINK ATTACHED BELOW), but your gonna need some tools. taking the phone apart is not hard but you gotta have patience and atleast need like 1 - 2 hours of time ...
you need TORX T6 SCREWDRIVER and TORX T4 SCREWDRIVER ...

Did you check the sim-lock?
Slide out keyboard. Shake gently if the door to the sim opens up it is not locked. Push the lock in the direction of arrow with door closed. It is the plastic bar next to the door. You may want to check if the sim is all the way inserted as well. Phone will act like the sim is bad with both of the above conditions.

Installed wrong rom, need help

Ok, so basically I installed a gsm rom on my phone, instead of a cdma rom, now the phone will not do anything, is there anything that can be done, or should i just buy a new phone.
Try to get into bootloader mode. Hold the volume down key + the power key at the same time. You should be able to get to the tri-colored boot loader screen. From there attach your TP2 to a USB and flash a CDMA rom like normal.
i tried that, and still nothing, i actually noticed it doesn't even wanna charge
actually it is charging, but nothing else
I just wanna know if you have saved your phone or not.
I was going to flash a gsm rom,but I see your situation now,so..
If anybody know how to change a gsm rom to a cdma rom?
Nope all it does is charge, i cant nothing else to work on it

We have Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile and Touch Pro 2's on both carriers and I did that by mistake on my T-Mobile device. Okay, this is what I did; first, you're going to need a clean sd memory card that will at least hold the ROM you're flashing. I don't recommend you put anything else on this card except the ROM.
One note, you must be Hard SPL'd to do this; if not this is all mute.
The reset button on Verizon's TP2 is located under the back cover on the device's left side just under the volume rocker; it's a red dot that says "RESET".
With the ROM on the memory card insert the memory card; next hold down both the volume down and reset button simultaneously, releasing the reset button first and then the volume down rocker and your bootloader screen with Red, Green, Blue and White with yellow characters will appear. By the way you can also use this procedure to flash your device via sync and PC if "USB" appears in the white portion of the screen if you have an existing "CDMA" ROM on your Rhodium 500 device (CDMA).
Now, I'm going to tell you right from the start this works perfect with GSM Rhodiums; I've never tried it with my wife's device which has God status in this house and I'm not about to piss her off on a wild hunch.
Double check the forum whether someone else has been a victim and it's not all that unusual, though I admit I felt like a real dumbass when I did my device and I got an all white screen. Just remember RHOD500 is your device; you see RHOD210; that's GSM. Take care!

First you should do what SNittyKitty wrote.
What company is your TP2 from?
If that doesn't make it respond write to HTC Support and tell them you install a ROM from there page and now it's not responding. And by not responding I mean the charging light not turning on when connected.
Same Problem
I had someone send me the unlocker for the Rhod500 and it was actually for the Raph. Although I did not find that out until after I tried to flash it. Now I have the same problem. Any luck yet? Also, when i plug in the phone to the computer it comes up in device manager but I cant do anything. I figure if it is in device manager I should be able to fix the issue but I dont know.
If you flashed the raphael unlocker then there is no fixing the phone. It is toast, it does make a nice paper weight

Think I bricked it for good : any suggestions

So today I was trying to updated to the latest Continuum and after i flashed it it was acting wonky. I hadn't reverted to stock in a while so i thought.. might as well.
So here is what i did
1.) odin 1 click to stock
2.) whenever i flash back to stock i lose 3 button combos. I thought well, i could try to fix it, or i can just flash the GB bootloaders which have it anyway so:
3.) adb reboot download
4.) odin flash GB bootloaders as PDA
5.) very shortly thereafter odin failed and phone rebooted
6.) stuck with Phone ..!.. PC
I have tried every possible key combination known to man. 2 button, 3 button, combinations of holding and releasing buttons plugging in usb taking out the battery, etc etc.
I even went out and made a jig. I have tried both 300k resistor to directly to the mini usb pcb and made a little usb jack with 300k attached. (i also tried 301, 302 and 303).
All of these boot the phone but go directly to phone ..!.. pc.
The only thing i'm not sure of is if the jig is actually 300k, i don't have a potentiometer to test it. The pack of radioshack resistors i bought though did have 5 in it, so i tried various combos of them in-case one was flak.
Is there anything i didn't think of yet? I'll try to take my jig to a potentiometer on tomorrow (work is conveniently located on the way to the ATT store) and if all else fails i'll take it to att and see what they can do.
Is there anything i haven't tried that i should? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
You arent bricked with that screen.
Try power and vol down.
Failing that, take batt out, plug in usb, then batt.
Still doesnt work?
Buy, or make a proper (tested) jig.
If you power the phone off then connect your jig, and all it does is try to boot the phone as normal then you have an improper resistance. You are most likely changing the resistance when you hold the jig with your fingers. Try holding it with gloves on or something, or order a microusb breakout board to solder your resistors on to.

Duck tape where your fingers are gonna touch.
Well. I was masking it with scotch tape like i saw in an example. I rebuilt the jig with 3x100 and 1x1 and wrapped it in duct tape. still boots to Phone ..!.. PC. I'll get to a potentiometer tomorrow and make sure it's got the right rating.
I also ordered a real jig, but it won't be here for days.
So.. is there anyone out there who has gotten the Phone ..!.. PC screen and _not_ been able to recover from it?

Haha, yes. I was just typing fast. They are the same 100k and 1k ohm resistors most of the tutorials i've seen get from radioshack
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13482176#post13482176
make sure your tape is covering the jig completely. Even the tiniest amount of contact will interrupt the resistance.
Speaking of bricking, mine wont turn on at all, its ****ing dead. bought a JIG and ill wait for it to come and try my luck, buy a new one if not. Good luck bro
So, I brought my jig in to work today and tested it with a volt meter. When setup with 3x100k and 2x1k it read as 301k. i taped it securely with duct tape and tested it again, still 301k. Tried it out a few times... phone ..!.. pc screen.
I brought it into AT&T and they set up a warranty service for it. Lets hope it goes off with out a hitch. Just for grins and giggles. I'll keep my homemade jig and when i get my new phone i'll try it out. My guess is it will work. I think in the bootloader flashing fail it wrote some of the bootloader but not the whole thing or something like that.

Sorry to say but you are mistaken. If it were ANY problem with a bootloader you would have gotten nothing out of your phone, nothing. At all. Not a single thing.
was your phone on that screen while you were trying the jig? It has to be powered off to work. If it was off How long did you try? It can be tricky to get it just right on the pins.
It's cool you're getting it replaced I guess but a jig would have worked. I can guarantee that.
The phone was definitely off when i was using the jig. It would then boot to that screen. I tried it about 15 times. Both with my mini-usb adapter i made and by just touching the resistors to the pcb in the mini-usb connector.
I guess i'll know in a couple days when i get a new phone if my jig works or not. I also orderd a pre-made jig for future problems.
I wish i could say it was just user error on my part, but i think something was truly messed up. I read something on another thread about some stock rom doesn't have a way to get into download mode? (keys or jig -- only adb i guess?) maybe that's what i flashed initially?
A jig will always work unless it's actually a brick, or your usb port is broken. Sometimes the button combo is lost yes. And, adb only works if you can get to the OS.
I'm aware that ADB only works from the OS. Generally after flashing this stock rom, i had to boot into OS and ADB to get to download mode (buttons never worked). I never tried a jig before though.
I actually think that the jig I ordered may be here before my new phone. Either way, I'll hang on to the old phone until my jig comes and then i'll try a commercial jig.
Perhaps i'm the first person with a 'soft-brick' that is actually a 'hard-brick'? *shrug*

If so you are super duper amazingly unlucky!!
I've heard of 2 accounts of a hard brick, one was a problem with the param.lfs, but one was actually a bootloader mix brick, that have been recovered from by a jig.
What they did was:
Pull battery
Insert battery DON'T TOUCH ANY BUTTONS
Insert jig.
Hold volume buttons.
That booted them into download mode and saved their phones.
Those are odd accounts but your phone isn't that damaged in comparison. That being said anything is possible, but I'd put money down the jig will work. The only reason it wouldn't is like I said, if your usb port is broken.
If you think its completely bricked, ill buy it for $10
just pm me
Are you placing the ponds of the jig on the 2 correct usb pins (i think it is five and six).

SIM Card Not Recognized - SIM Tray Won't Open

So, as you can probably guess from the thread title, my SIM Card is not being recognized by my phone and I cannot seem to get the tray open. Will AT&T fix this even if I've rooted my phone and unlocked my bootloader? Any suggestions on how to get my tray open? I've tried using the tool that came with my phone and a paperclip and neither of them will open the tray.
Edit: I finally managed to pry it open. After taking the SIM Card out and putting it back in again, everything is working fine for now. Hopefully it stays that way.

the easiest way to get the door open is to use a pin or toothpick or something of the sort and push it into the small hole on the sim door gently until it pops right open
So it sounds like it was working fine, then you had the SIM not recognized error, and tried to open the tray? Does it seem that the tray is damaged or anything like that? Did you previously open the tray, drop the phone or anything that may have caused the tray to get damaged? Seems odd that something like that would just happen spontaneously. Or does the tray seem okay, just a lot harder to open than you thought it would be?

Well I guess I lightly dropped it onto the carpet the night before it stopped working. Also, the main problem was that I couldn't get the tray to open using the little hole next to it. Maybe it just seemed hard because I remember it popping open a lot easier when I first put in a SIM card.

Am I Hard Bricked Or Not?

So, I rooted my wife's old Galaxy S3 (Verizon). It took a bit to figure out as this is my first Samsung device I've ever tried to root. I read as much as I could find before I did the deed. Basically I tried a few of the known methods out there. Nothing worked until the Towelroot method. Worked like a charm. I didn't do anything weird. I put Rom Manager on it to put a custom recovery on it. I did forget that I didn't unlock the bootloader. Now the phone is/was on Android 4.3 JellyBean. Anyways I did EZ-Unlock to unlock it. I removed the normal bloatware. Nothing that would harm the phone. Then because this phone is running off of WiFi only and I kept getting the no Sim card message I decided to power down and put a non active Sim card into it. That's where things went horribly wrong. I turned it off, put the Sim card in, powered it back on or tried to and the phone did nothing. I got no vibration no lights not a thing. So after trying several button combinations I pulled the battery and plugged it in and that got the red charging light. When I plug it into my lap top it makes the recognize device sound but can't find drivers for it. I tried to do the hard brick recovery where you download the hard brick onto an sd card and then the phone SHOULD boot off of it. Well that didn't even work. I just can't understand what exactly understand why this happened or what happened to get to this point. Any help would be amazing guys. It is just a play toy at this point. But it's important to have the phone working in case of needing it for a temporary phone.
It is impossible to downgrade from the 4.3 locked bootloader to the unlocked bootloader. Verizon killed the loophole, so yes you are hard bricked. You were right in trying the SD card de-brick. Did you try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166?
Make sure you use a class 10 SD card and one that has the same storage size as the phone's internal storage (16/32).
If that doesn't work you need to get a JTAG repair. I know http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/ has a JTAG repair service. They even have a bootloader downgrade service to revert to the unlocked bootloader!
OK, so the de-brick method. The guy has 2 of those videos up. The one that I believe everyone is going off of is the one where he states you have to have a certain SD card. The other he states that it will work with anything and that it's much easier than the previous video. So having seen both, I don't honestly know what direction to go in. I don't have any income or money right now to go buy the right card if that's what I need to do. I also can't do the JTAG. However I did read up and watch a few videos on making my own jig. I also found one on ebay for 4 bucks with free shipping. That I could possibly swing. But 20 bucks or 50 bucks I can't. It sucks that this all happened, as much as I dislike Samsung phones because of their plastic feel and touchwiz I was looking forward to getting rid of touchwiz and seeing what the phone could really do. I was unaware that the loophole had not been reopened. I suppose I was reading things wrong then because while there are restrictions on what Roms you can flash I thought that we were still able to unlock the bootloader. I mean Ez-Unlock worked from what the phone said. Now if that's what hard bricked it then ok I guess, I just would have thought something would have went wrong right after and not wait until I powered the phone off. Meh, live and learn I suppose. Perhaps getting the jig or making my own for a buck is what I should do to see if I can get it to all work again so I can start from scratch. I should have known when I tried to root a Samsung phone from sprint a couple years ago that this was a bad idea. I soft bricked that one and couldn't get it to come back from it no matter what I did so a third party store had to do it for me. Then I soft bricked it again. Samsung phones hate me. LOL I appreciate the help. Any further help and or thoughts on this matter are totally welcome!!
Yeah once you use EZ Unlock the phone will still be fine until you try to reboot and it goes through the boot process. Once it doesn't recognize that part of the bootchain it bricks.
But yeah if you can make a jig to get yourself into download mode you can ODIN a stock 4.3 tar and be back up and running.
So it was EZ-Unlock huh? Alright well now I know. I'll run to radio shack and get the resistors I need and give it a shot. Doesn't seem like it's all that hard to do really, just a matter of hitting the right points in the charging port.

Hope I am wrong but the jig won't help you. If it does make sure you tell us because using a jig would be preferred over the SD card trick.

Jig won't work, not even worth trying.
Well, I tried making the jig and that didn't work. Not sure if I'm just not hitting the right parts on it or what? Now the battery is totally dead but I swapped it with my father in law's fully charged S3. Now I went ahead and bought the little jig thing that they sell on E-bay. Yeah that hasn't worked yet. I'm going to research into it more and see if I'm just doing something wrong or not. But it should be plug in and boom it goes into download mode. If not then next month I'll get the SD card I need and try that method. Right now I'm just stuck. And not only stuck with this problem but also stuck waiting for my upgrade phone replacement to come in tomorrow as I upgraded from my DNA to the One M7 but that one is on a boot loop so now I'm waiting on the LG G2. Ugh, my luck with phones is just not going in the way of Good. LOL

You're hard bricked, you need to do the SD card method or send it out for a jtag repair.
A USB jig will never work in this situation.
Well I guess that's what I'll have to do next month when I get paid again. Go get the SD card and give that a try.

They're pretty cheap on Amazon, less than $20.
Or you can jtag for $30.
