Think I bricked it for good : any suggestions - Captivate General

So today I was trying to updated to the latest Continuum and after i flashed it it was acting wonky. I hadn't reverted to stock in a while so i thought.. might as well.
So here is what i did
1.) odin 1 click to stock
2.) whenever i flash back to stock i lose 3 button combos. I thought well, i could try to fix it, or i can just flash the GB bootloaders which have it anyway so:
3.) adb reboot download
4.) odin flash GB bootloaders as PDA
5.) very shortly thereafter odin failed and phone rebooted
6.) stuck with Phone ..!.. PC
I have tried every possible key combination known to man. 2 button, 3 button, combinations of holding and releasing buttons plugging in usb taking out the battery, etc etc.
I even went out and made a jig. I have tried both 300k resistor to directly to the mini usb pcb and made a little usb jack with 300k attached. (i also tried 301, 302 and 303).
All of these boot the phone but go directly to phone ..!.. pc.
The only thing i'm not sure of is if the jig is actually 300k, i don't have a potentiometer to test it. The pack of radioshack resistors i bought though did have 5 in it, so i tried various combos of them in-case one was flak.
Is there anything i didn't think of yet? I'll try to take my jig to a potentiometer on tomorrow (work is conveniently located on the way to the ATT store) and if all else fails i'll take it to att and see what they can do.
Is there anything i haven't tried that i should? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

You arent bricked with that screen.
Try power and vol down.
Failing that, take batt out, plug in usb, then batt.
Still doesnt work?
Buy, or make a proper (tested) jig.

If you power the phone off then connect your jig, and all it does is try to boot the phone as normal then you have an improper resistance. You are most likely changing the resistance when you hold the jig with your fingers. Try holding it with gloves on or something, or order a microusb breakout board to solder your resistors on to.

This
Duck tape where your fingers are gonna touch.

Well. I was masking it with scotch tape like i saw in an example. I rebuilt the jig with 3x100 and 1x1 and wrapped it in duct tape. still boots to Phone ..!.. PC. I'll get to a potentiometer tomorrow and make sure it's got the right rating.
I also ordered a real jig, but it won't be here for days.
So.. is there anyone out there who has gotten the Phone ..!.. PC screen and _not_ been able to recover from it?

Highly doubtful.. that's the "**** your pants when you first see it" screen but everyone manages to recover from it eventually, unless they have some sort of hardware problem.

Haha, yes. I was just typing fast. They are the same 100k and 1k ohm resistors most of the tutorials i've seen get from radioshack

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13482176#post13482176
make sure your tape is covering the jig completely. Even the tiniest amount of contact will interrupt the resistance.

Speaking of bricking, mine wont turn on at all, its ****ing dead. bought a JIG and ill wait for it to come and try my luck, buy a new one if not. Good luck bro

So, I brought my jig in to work today and tested it with a volt meter. When setup with 3x100k and 2x1k it read as 301k. i taped it securely with duct tape and tested it again, still 301k. Tried it out a few times... phone ..!.. pc screen.
I brought it into AT&T and they set up a warranty service for it. Lets hope it goes off with out a hitch. Just for grins and giggles. I'll keep my homemade jig and when i get my new phone i'll try it out. My guess is it will work. I think in the bootloader flashing fail it wrote some of the bootloader but not the whole thing or something like that.

Sorry to say but you are mistaken. If it were ANY problem with a bootloader you would have gotten nothing out of your phone, nothing. At all. Not a single thing.
was your phone on that screen while you were trying the jig? It has to be powered off to work. If it was off How long did you try? It can be tricky to get it just right on the pins.
It's cool you're getting it replaced I guess but a jig would have worked. I can guarantee that.

The phone was definitely off when i was using the jig. It would then boot to that screen. I tried it about 15 times. Both with my mini-usb adapter i made and by just touching the resistors to the pcb in the mini-usb connector.
I guess i'll know in a couple days when i get a new phone if my jig works or not. I also orderd a pre-made jig for future problems.
I wish i could say it was just user error on my part, but i think something was truly messed up. I read something on another thread about some stock rom doesn't have a way to get into download mode? (keys or jig -- only adb i guess?) maybe that's what i flashed initially?

A jig will always work unless it's actually a brick, or your usb port is broken. Sometimes the button combo is lost yes. And, adb only works if you can get to the OS.

I'm aware that ADB only works from the OS. Generally after flashing this stock rom, i had to boot into OS and ADB to get to download mode (buttons never worked). I never tried a jig before though.
I actually think that the jig I ordered may be here before my new phone. Either way, I'll hang on to the old phone until my jig comes and then i'll try a commercial jig.
Perhaps i'm the first person with a 'soft-brick' that is actually a 'hard-brick'? *shrug*

If so you are super duper amazingly unlucky!!
I've heard of 2 accounts of a hard brick, one was a problem with the param.lfs, but one was actually a bootloader mix brick, that have been recovered from by a jig.
What they did was:
Pull battery
Insert battery DON'T TOUCH ANY BUTTONS
Insert jig.
Hold volume buttons.
That booted them into download mode and saved their phones.
Those are odd accounts but your phone isn't that damaged in comparison. That being said anything is possible, but I'd put money down the jig will work. The only reason it wouldn't is like I said, if your usb port is broken.

If you think its completely bricked, ill buy it for $10
just pm me

Are you placing the ponds of the jig on the 2 correct usb pins (i think it is five and six).

Have you tried cutting up a micro usb cable tip and then trying it? I had the same problem with mine. Couldn't get the jig to work until this method.

[Q] Jig only booting phone, not download mode

Ok editing original post, here was the initial issue:
I was planning on going to MIUI and had some issues going from Torch to it (wouldn't boot past CWM), so I went back to stock, used odin to flash the speedmod kernel, and tried 3-button into CWM but then remembered my Captivate is one of the unlucky ones without the 3-button and when I went back to stock it removed my 3-button fix. So now it's sitting at the speedmod Galaxy S picture and won't boot past that. I can't get into recovery and it won't go into download mode with volume up and down then plug in the USB. Figuring I may have to make a jig, but does anyone else have any fixes?
Now for the update:
I made a jig but when I do it, it just boots the phone and doesn't go into download mode. Any ideas as to why? I followed the directions found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889128&highlight=usb+jig
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512&highlight=usb+jig
yeah if its not putting your phone into download mode,
you have the wrong resistance. (total amount of resistor value).
it has to be exact -/+ 5% ish
there are a couple dozen combinations that do different things.
also dont hold your homemade jig with bare fingers, use some tape to hold the pins, so your fingers dont create a parralell path and change the resistance.,
looks like I just didn't try it enough times... go figure. thanks
Make sure you aren't touching the resistors with your finger, or you'll change the overall resistance.
i beleive i covered that with my tape thing above...

a new type of bricking your phone perhapse?!

I've read.. really I have..
Oden's
3 button fix
using linux..
using android sdk and the adb commands..
I haven't tried the JIG yet.
But I wanted to show you guys first before I leave work for the day and stop and Radio Shack on my way home.
I can't get into the Download Mode. When i power on the phone normally I get the AT&T "World Phone" screen. white with blue AT&T logo
If I hold down the Vol down or both down and up and plug in the usb cable from my pc to the captivate i get THIS!!??
So It's not hardware bricked (I don't think)... but what do I do?!
I can't get any of the one click loaders to see the phone, it doesn't ever get into a recognizable mode.
What happened:
I had CyanogenMod 7.1.. I wanted to see what MIUI was all about. Then I wanted to go back.. I went into recovery and formatted EVERYTHING i could find, factory reset, and now I have this non-animated waiting animation.
I figured I could flash back to factory and clean the phone then flash with CWM to CM7.1... I WAS WRONG!!!!!
Jig should get you where you need to be. Looks like you lost your button combos. What is your build number and which bootloaders are you using?
the only info i have left is the inside label.
Samsung
Model: SGH-i897
FCC ID: A3LSGHI897
IMEI: not telling
S/N: R1XZA58158D
1010 REV 0.4
SKU: 65187
1010 is your build number. 2010 October.
But.... I still need to use a JIG? No way of fixing this with software?
I hate to say it, but probably not. In formatting "everything", it seems like you've formatted out the software parts that would allow you to get back to where you could use software to fix this. A jig will get you to download mode, as it's a hardware-based solution.
Would a quick stop at the local AT&T store help any? Can they do a factory reset with their equipment? The only advantage i see is that they might do it for FREE and I wouldn't need to fudge around with the stupid resistors?
DO NOT USE 3button fix! DONT EVER. you will hard-brick for real if you have gingerbread bootloaders before flashing 3 button fix. 3 button fix is obsolete. to fix (if needed) use the i897 ginegerbread bootloaders to get 3 button fix and get gingerbread ready at the same time without bricking. if you cant find the thread [MOD] i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders, you shouldnt be flashing ANYTHING from this site,
that being said.\
take out battery,
put in battery,
HOLD both volume buttons,
PLUG IN USB TO PHONE/PC
KEEP BUTTONS HELD UNTIL YOU SEE YELLOW TRIANGLE
it works, trust me.

Att store does not and will not re-flash the software on your phone, if you even let them see it they will know you VOIDED YOUR WARRANTY. dont ask questions like that. we will KNOW you havent read a damn thing on this site.
Looks like the PARAMS partition was damaged on your device. Your PARAMS can be configured to boot the phone to any mode. it's the BOOT_MODE parameter I think. Using this simple string value you can tell your device to boot into charging, normal, download, recovery and several others which I have no clue about.
Looks like your device has valid bootloaders, but the kernel has been instructed to boot into charging mode. It won't finish charging mode because the qualifications are not met.
I'm betting that since you obviously have a valid PBL, and SBL, you can plug that into the stock charger outlet and have the kernel boot into battery charging mode, then turn it on normally. But definately reflash your params.

First off.. Mind your manners and respect the forum for what it is. A place for all of us to learn and expand our knowledge on these awesome devices
Second off, you joined this forum a few months ago.. I've been here since 2005.. so please don't assume that I haven't read a "damn thing on this site" or that I haven't contributed to the site either! This is not the first time I've rooted or flashed or recovered from a bricked phone before. It's not even the first time on a Captivate. also, I've been reading since 9am.
I'm in real good with my AT&T guys so no need to worry about voiding anything. They already know and they have asked me to root their phones as well. They also offered me a job but they can't afford me.
So... the question wasn't "will they know I voided my warranty" or "do they flash".. the question was, "Can they do a factory reset with their equipment" which I admit should have been worded, Can they get me into download mode with their equipment?
Thank you for the information regarding the 3 button fix being obsolete. I wasn't planning on flashing it but good info anyway.
"take out battery, put in battery, HOLD both volume buttons, PLUG IN USB TO PHONE/PC, KEEP BUTTONS HELD UNTIL YOU SEE YELLOW TRIANGLE, it works, trust me." = doesn't work.. that's why I'm posting.
I held the buttons for over 60 seconds (thumb goes numb after that) and I also tried Just the Vol Down button.. Same results as picture attached in the first post of this thread.
so yeaaaaaaa... i stopped off at radio shack on the way home and got the resistors to make the jig.. aaaaaaaaaaaand it didn't work.
I was successfully able to get the jig to touch just the first 2 pins next to the head phones jack and i got the exact same non-animated animation circle.
SOOOooooo i'm starting to look into the fact that I still have insurance on my line
Buy a jig instead if making one. They are less than $10
Edit
Did you try plugging in to Odin after using your home made jig? Also, make sure to wrap the jig in tape so your fingers aren't in contact with any of the jig. Contact with the jig can change the resistance, rendering it useless.

Try the steps he told you again, but flip flop putting in the battery, and plugging in usb... i.e. plug phone into usb, hold both volume buttons, THEN insert battery. instant download mode. worked every time for every build number captivate i've ever tried.
that didn't work either..
I just bought: 'SainSmart Micro USB Dongle Jig for Samsung Galaxy S Captivate / Vibrant' by Sain Store on amazon.com for $1.95 plus shipping. I'll let you know how THAT goes.
Also, Just a heads up. I have insurance on the phone. So I called up to find out what I could find out. First off, they don't care if you void the warrenty with software. Just so long as there is no physical damage and no water damage. Second, they HAVE to replace the Captivate with another Captivate if they have some left on the shelf. If they are out, they could have replaced it with a new Samsung Galaxy S II for the same deductible of $125. I'm holding off on replacing like for like right now until I try the JIG.
I may wait a month and see if they run out of Captivates too! lol.

Newer captivates can't unbrick?

After 3 months with Samsung repair they finally agreed their Chinese knockoff 1010 Captivate was faulty and gave me a brand new 1108.
The Samsung repair guy even told me that they had different runs of 1007-1010, half of the batches were Korean parts and built solid, and other runs where it had many Chinese made parts and built hastily.
My 1010 had to be from China town. It had a bad speaker, flimsy power button, flimsy latch on bottom of phone that holds back cover on, it wouldn't stay in place. And the GPS didn't work for squat, which if it wasn't for the fact it sometimes locked onto one sat, I would think there wasn't a GPS chip in that phone at all.
I never dropped my old phone, and it even had a Bodyglove case on it since I got it. And now that I think about it, the old 1010 Captivate battery definitely said Made in China, this 1108 has a battery that says Made in Korea. I'm really happy with this new 1108 Captivate, GPS works great and everything is a lot better.
Anyway, long story short I used Odin3 1-click to flash KH1 and it failed midway through the flash for no reason apparent to me, except that newer phones are specific about how they like to be flashed? I used Odin3 1-click for some other bootloaders and it worked. I read about it before trying anything with this new Captivate and heard that Odin3 was supposed to be OK...
I'm stuck at the brick screen that has the icon Phone--Exclamation Point--PC. Nothing works to get into download mode, USB battery pull, all different button combos and timing with unplugging usb and putting battery in, releasing power button.
I've tried everything but a jig. Is this a known problem with newer captivates that a jig is the only way to unbrick it from the Exclamation Point screen? What if a jig doesn't work? OMG I don't know if Samsung will even talk to me if I try to replace it again.
The screen you see is download mode, just slightly different. Odin should detect it, and you should be able to try flashing again.
No luck, bootloader is gone and for some reason Samsung disabled 3-button. I'd say I'm really lucky the flash didn't stop at another point. I'm gonna need to try a jig.

If Odin doesn't read it then it's back to AT&T. Tell them you accidentally pulled the usb from the computer while you were transferring files. I had the captivate from sept 10 til oct 11. The jig won't work. Its either go to AT&T or send it off for jtag.

Anyway, yesterday I ordered a jig off Amazon Prime overnight and the Lasership guy was delivering it as I was leaving for work 8AM EST. CBA with the 300k resistor cause lining up the pins is a pain, and my hands sweat too much, hyperhydrosis... But dang that was a fast delivery.
And the jig worked too, as I knew it would because 3-button was still rebooting the phone, just not going to DL mode. And the bootloader flash randomly stopping and saying flash failed wasn't completely user error. I should have flashed the individual pda, not used 1-click, but Samsung changed something in the newer captivate batches.
Samsung probably felt like screwing everyone who doesn't use their s**tty touchwiz, that or ATT had a hand in it. Then on top of that the 3-button is disabled.
Of course the jig is still going to work because Samsung isn't going to JTAG everything, they would just rather use a bluebox jig on any phones that came in bricked.

WOW some people can't listen.
And no one said send it to Samsung for a JTAG. There's a guy here on xda that'll do it for $40. Samsung will charge you over $100.
Samsung does not do jtag.. at least not in their service manuals.
I do UnBrickable Mod for $30 + shipping. UBM is far superior to JTAG. You can delete all the bootloaders on your device or replace them with your favorite Justin Beiber MP3 and UnBrickable Mod will still allow you to access download mode.
We put the device into a debug mode where it will accept a memory input from USB rather than booting from a flash.

Sorry if it sounded like I was replying to you, I wasn't. My friends were also telling me "o no! black screen of death, jig won't work, it's bricked for good."
It was just a general statement, it wasn't directed at you. I didn't mean I was going to send it to Samsung to have it unbricked/JTAGed whatever. I meant that Samsung has purposefully made newer of Captivates easier to brick, but they didn't go so far as to make them permanently brick, they didn't disable the jig method.
Samsung knows they will see a lot of those bricked phones come back to them from Asurion/ATT Warranty Repair to turn into refurbs and they don't want to have to crack open every single one to unbrick them, that's why they left the jig method in place.

Dang, that's awesome. I want to get that mod because I have a feeling a bootloader flash will brick the phone again, and I won't be so lucky with a jig next time.
How long after you receive the phone before the mod is done and it's shipped back?

[Q] Brick?

Hey folks, looking for a bit of help. So my wife washed my phone.(it didn't actually make it through the entire cycle because i realized what she did a minute or two too late. Regardless, the phone still got wet. I immediately pulled the battery along with SIM and SD.(I didn't try to power it on) I put the phone into a bag of rice and left it there for over 3 days. The phone seemed to be completely dried but i put it in the food dehydrator for good measure. The phone stayed in the dehydrator for 18+ hours. I reinserted the battery and plugged into AC and to my surprise I actually had a display. However, the phone gets to the AT&T screen and then reboots very near the end of the animation.(If left alone, the phone will boot loop indefinitely) I am able to boot into CWM recovery successfully. I tried flashing a ROM but the phone still boot loops. Flashing seems to work like it should, ie no errors, boot animation for ICS when flashing that. And yes, I've cleared cache/factory wipe/etc multiple times) I am unable to get into download via vol keys and usb cable to PC. I have a working jig that doesn't seem to invoke download mode either.(Plugging in the jig actually boots the phone into CWM recovery) The next step is to try forcing the phone into download via ADB.(downloading SDK onto new laptop now)
So after the above novel, my question is this: besides key combo, jig, and ADB is there an alternate way to force phone into download mode? A google search doesn't yield much...mostly articles ripped off of this site.
Is it possible to flash a .zip or script to force into download mode?
p.s. Odin does recognize the phone as a target when using the jig even though the phone is in recovery instead of DL mode.
Its worth mentioning that my lovely wife did spring for a brand new skyrocket the day my phone was washed meaning this phone is yet another to tinker with.

You may have stuck volume buttons due to water or partial shorts on usb connectors. Try and get some isopro achohol and clean contacts and get compressed air spray to clear any debri
. Also take out sim card and clean it and the contacts
Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion. I too considered that one of the buttons was stuck. However i am able to navigate within CWM recovery using the vol+ and the vol- buttons.
I actually did your other suggestion too.(not exactly but pretty close) I left that part out of my original post for the sake of brevity. Here's what I did:
I detached the the PCB from digitizer. I've got an electronics background so I happen to have quite a variety of small tools. One of which is a tiny medium/lite stiffness wire bristled brush.(It's like a tiny paint brush) I lightly brushed and cleaned all connections. This includes the connectable/disconnectable ribbon cables as well as any solder joint that I was able to access. Some ICs are "sealed" with epoxy so those connections couldn't be accessed.(Also seems like they stayed water proof) Basically I cleaned every place on the PCB that I saw irregularities. There were tiny spots of corrosive build up that looked as if they may be possibly shorting IC pins. Almost like "tin whiskers" except i used a magnifying lens and not a microscope.
I next used an air hose to remove debris I had just brushed off.(By the way, I like to stay away from canned air when using directly on components, it seems to leave a film. sometimes the un-evaporated contents also cause dust to cake)
I used a cap of isopropyl and some cotton swabs to clean the contacts further then let air dry. I wish I would have taken before and after pics because there was a huge difference. Anyways, this was actually done in between the bag of rice and dehydrator steps I mentioned earlier.

Yes sir. The original phone was bought out of contract at full price since I didn't want to wait for my upgrade to roll around. I was eligible for the contract discount this time.
Questions go in q&a
Here's the update:
I was able to force DL mode through ADB. Now that I can use Odin, I've realized that I'm not sure what i should flash. I'm thinking I'm going to try to completely return to stock. Simply flashing a ROM seems to work except for the boot loop. The boot loop happens regardless of the ROM i flash. The boot animation changes with different roms as expected. This leads me to believe the internal storage is indeed functional.
Should I try a kernel?
Bootloader?(is one even available?)
Stock Recovery?

[Q] Bricked by pulling battery?

Scenerio:
Pulled the battery out of my note while it was on (at 27%). It was running fine, better than ever actually on cm 10.1 with flap kernel. I pull the battery on my phone everyday and swap, I never shut it off before doing so.
Now, when I put in a battery, it shows the white samsung sign and then goes blank (approx 2 seconds)...
If I hold "down" volume, while inserting the battery, I get recovery mode, but it too blanks out after approx 3 seconds
If I hold up and down volume simultaneously, I get to the glowing samsung sign before it cuts out, also approx 3 seconds of on time.
Plugging it in, while battery is in, results in constant vibrate, no other sign of life, plugging it into a pc yields the same result.
Tried having the pc recognize it, via odin, when in recovery. The pc does see it until it shuts off after 3 seconds...
I do not know how, but I think it is severly broken. I am wondering if a usb jig, or even jtag might solve my problem. Searched the net a bit to no avail.
Any ideas, anyone?
Check to make sure your battery pins are 100% straight and not bent, it could be something is not totally making contact.
No go

I have fully charged one. That isn't it
Leave battery out of phone for 30 minutes and try again?
I doubt a jtag would fix it, sounds like hardware.

Tried it this morning after leaving it out all night, no go again. I think I am in warranty though. I think I'll have to give that a try.

Orangekid, thanks for the help and input. I'll have to update this thread as I go. I am sure someone somewhere will be in this boat again.

No problem, sorry we couldn't get a good resolution, that is a really weird problem.
And you're 100% sure the pins are fine and the contact point for the pins doesn't have any gunk or anything.

Yup, I even pulled them out a bit, to ensure the connection was extra firm. Nada. :crying:
Fixed!
I took the back off (again!) as per the how-to youtube video....
Then I took some tweezers....
and wiggled the crap out of the power button. Side to side, back and forth....I wiggled with some force. I half hoped I would bust the damn power button off the board and just use usb to start the thing up....a working note, even crippled by usb start up, is better than none right?
So, needless to say, I fiddled then checked it with a battery...fiddled and checked it with a battery and when I could check it with a battery, where it wouldn't buzz and shut off immediately, I knew I was getting somewhere.
I am back in CM 10.1 with Flap kernel.
The moral? Grab the tweezers!
P.S. I am also very paranoid of my problem returning. The quandary? To get back on stock and clear my custom mod # which would put me back in warranty coverage (for about a month and a half)....or ride it out, knowing I can just break the damn power button (or replace via solder) when it goes south again. This long without my favorite phone (and facing a 300 dollar replacement) has been killer!
