[Q] Reserved space & differing free space - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Realised today that with Zune 4.8 and Mango RTM (didn't monitor with previous versions), I'm seeing differing amounts of free space reports. Zune tells me I have around 1GB left, while my device is sure that I have closer to 2GB. Apart from this discrepancy, I'm concerned about where all my storage space has gone. I have not used 6 GB.
I have disabled reserved space. When I disabled it, the phone still read close to 2GB but Zune updated to show more free space.
I have around 2.5 GB of "reserved space and other content". Third-party stuff should not be taking more than 1 GB (around 10 games & 5 apps).
All my media is synced through Zune and therefore displayed as separate to the reserved space. This adds up to just over 3 GB.

Reserved space should be system files, Apps, Games and their local storage. And well, you're not the only one who has suspiciously high reserved space. I think that the difference between Zune and your phone is speced that is reserved for the system though. You may modify this in Zune by going to Settings -> Phone -> Reserved space.

I am sick to death of this issue and Zune's refusal to let me manage my own files by drag and drop.
I can understand them wanting to protect the OS, but PLEASE LET ME SIMPLY DRAG AND DROP MY OWN MEDIA FROM ANY PC, WINDOWS, LINUX OR MAC, WITHOUT THE NEED FOR ZUNE.
After 7 years of Windows phones, this is becoming a deal breaker for me.
Here's my current "Reserved Space". Apparently I now have over 13GB reserved.
Pretty impressive for a device that only comes with 8GB Is someone going to tell me that this is behaviour by design?

I have the same Problem. Since the Final Mango update, the system "consumes" 8 Gig of memory... deleted ALL deletable Apps, deleted all History in IE, Maps, Office, etc. Still It says that those Apps, System, etc eat 8 Gig. For me it menas that Mango is killing the space. Although the Beta didnt do that!
Maybe this is a Problem which someone should tell MS. Maybe they know something (although I dont believe that!)

Same issue with my Omnia 7 7720 ! I have just 1,5 G0 used by Navigon and 1,5 used by music... and my phone have not free space !! I have also disabled reserved space

Having the same problem, and also a friend of mine. Is there a fix??

I am also getting the same problem! C'mon Microsoft sort it!

the matter is:
1) every pc the phone has been synchronized with reserved some space.
2) ANY content you don't have on your current pc is in "reserved space", so music pictures etc.. synced with other pcs are in this category.
3) any application use storage space. for the application himself (remember xap files are compressed, so a 200 mb xap (like some game) is a 400 mb install.
4) in addition to this, any application use storage space (for settings, only a few kb, for all data...). Navigon uses gigas of data, i downloaded 1.5gb of maps, but on the phone they use more than 2 gb space
5) yes, it is very annoying that i can't know how much space an application use.

Okay, I'm in the same boat. Can't get my reserved space to lower no matter how many applications I delete. It does seem like a bug.
I can understand why they won't let us manage the folders directory, after all the folders names are GUIDs (application IDs). Still it would be good if I could see more than just the storage more my own apps.

How many max no. of apps[at any point of time] have you installed on your device ?
I had heard someone saying 200 apps... so was curious to know about this
Off-topic- Which program do u use to back up these apps so that you dont have to install them again after flashing a new rom
a poll would have been fun
I have way over 365+ Apps installed, that i simply did a 1 button restore using Titanium Backup from my SGS (User Apps+User Data)
it was totally painless
then in Market, i hit "Update All" and Bam! all Apps were updated to the latest version.
so far I've not come across any OLD 2.1/2.2 software that does not work properly in 2.3
well technically speaking they are NOT old anymore, since they were all UPDATED to the latest version from Market
that's probably what prevented all the errors

Wow, and I thought I was a "shameless app whore" with all the apps I have (130 or so)!
How much memory have those 365 apps used up? Curious because of other discussions over the need (or lack of, in my opinion) to use apps2sd or not on the Nexus S.
that's why i always complaing about the missing microSD
currently sitting at around 800 MB on apps usage, some games are huge (Gamerloft / EA), and Copilot GPS software takes up another 3 GB, it doesn't leave me much for MP3 and Animes/Movies on the go
^^
You're not the only one who thought they had a ton of apps installed....at one point in time I think I had 150+ installed but I've since done some pruning and am down to 128 now (according to appbrain).
I'm afraid that with all the space available on the Nexus S I'm going to resort back to my app hoarding days.
yup, i love appbrain, makes Cataloguing my apps such a breeze
also finding new or better apps to what i currently have already

Yeah, I miss the sdcard, but am getting by without it. I can easily fill up 28 gigs with just music, videos, and titanium or nandroid backups.
Doesn't your CoPilot map data go on the sdcard? Mine does. That doesn't count as part of the internal space for apps that we get (~ 1gb) or the need/lack-of-need to use apps2sd. I'm sure you know that, but some of the noobs might be confused by that. The actual app is only about 15mb in the apps space.

had to uninstall a whole bunch of apps just to be able to add a new widget to toggle silent mode

One XL Rogers LTE Ram size

Hi everyone,
According to XL Rogers specs, I might have 1 gig RAM but I only have 671 Mg.
Is it some king of Rogers limitation?
Can someone having a Rogers One XL release can confirm that?
Annoying because even with a few application in process, Sense is randomly restarting because, I think, of a lack of memory. It often happen right after using a browser for few minutes
Thanks!
I noticed that when looking at ATT One X
Would like to know as well. WTF..
i could be wrong but i think it's because the memory is shared with the gpu.
Weird because it shows 1Gig in parameters/hardware Info.
But still 671 in memory management and benchmark utilities...
That is normal. Some parts of the memory are reserved (for OS, GPU etc.) and are not accessible for all apps. For example, my Galaxy Nexus has 1GB RAM, but only "693 MB" is displayed under "about phone". That has always been the case for all Android phones, although how much of the memory is reserved differs between phones/ROMs.

I wonder why this always comes up when a new phone is released. When people buy a computer with 6 gigs of ram, do they get mad when Windows or OSX uses 2 of it?
It's the same concept here, but this always comes up.
If you run:
cat /proc/meminfo
That should give you all the physical memory available to Android.

It's not really the same concept, as that has to do with the 32-bit limitation. And yes, people did complaining a lot a few years ago when 4GB RAM started to become really affordable. People rarely complained about that these days, not because they finally understood the issue, but rather most computers are shipped with 64-bit OS now.

When you load up task manager in windows, it shows how much free memory you have. The amount of free memory is NEVER what your total physical memory is. There is always about a third used for cached data, OS processes, and stupid widgets that you have running on the desktop.
Nowhere did I mention the 32bit limitation, that would be a valid issue.

150ish meg for ramdisk and another 150ish meg for GPU. Explained away.
This is common on every phone that's ever come out for the last year + with 1 gigs of ram.

That's free memory that you are talking about. Its total physical memory and I and OP were saying. My Windows 7 task manager always shows the actual total physical memory, and that wasn't the case with winxp before either sp2 or sp3 and tons of people whined about that on a daily basis.
The OP's question, however, concerns Android and it doesnt show the correct amount of physical memory on the phone. He is not saying "free memory", which is of course changing all the time depending on running apps.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
I am seeing a total of 970ish MB's on my international htc one x. Currently 709MB used and 267MB free.
I believe some of the RAM is reserved for the GPU and since there are different GPU's in the two models it is probably what makes up the difference in available RAM.

[Q] [HELP] [MEMORY] -get more app memory

Hello,
I have the basic K2_UL with no "extra" (no root, no s-off etc.. ).
It's updated to 4.2.2.

It's very few left when using non movable app : like Chrome, Yahoo Mail, Outlook and OneNote.... ). Not available from Ms Windows.
Phone Storage : User Data and movable Apps 4.15 GB. It is to store user data when no SD card is used.
Not really used if you have an SD Card
SD Storage : You'd better get one...
So i cannot update any app anymore. What is the easier way to increase App Storage?
Again, i cannot move more app. i've moved all the possible ones !
Thanks for your help.

Not sure if it is for your model phone so please read the entire post.
Hello.
Sorry, but you didn't read the message.
It's not about switching SD_Card and Phone Storage (that contains Movable apps) that i need.
It's increase internal memory. This memory cannot be accessed from windows and is a linux partition.
Internal memory contains non movable apps : chrome, facebook etc... It's always full.
I don't want to root nor trick the phone i was asking if there was another solution. There is none.
I check my bank account with it and i want to keep it safe.
This phone is a crappy and i'll NEVER buy an htc again.

without rooting your phone there is absolutely no solution except buy a phone with larger storage.. the internal storage on this device is the only flaw i had with it but there is an easy workaround that only requires root.. i check my bank to and fail to see how rooting my phone is made it any less safe.. the method i use simply creates the linux partition you speak of on the sd card.. ext4.. and "extends" your internal and this allows you to move your apps to the extended partition thus freeing up as much space as you desire.. i have 32gb of internal space(i grabbed a class 10 32gb sd off amazon for like $15.. boost variant caps at 32 but others go up to 64).. if you are interested go here to an older post of mine.. i would have just included the links here but some new rule doesnt allow me to post outside links because i have less than 10 posts on my account.. again root IS required for this method.. good luck

Also I have not modded this phone at all its completely stock with boost.
the speed at which the sd card reads/writes is not a factor.. i personally went with a c10 so there was no chance of lag/stutter when running an app/game from the extended partition.. most apps/games are small enough in file size that the speed shouldnt matter.. you will need to root your device and should always make a backup.. store your backup in multiple locations(computer/flash drive/dropbox/cloud) to be safe if ever something happens to your phone help will be much easier if you have a backup ready to go

[DEV PROJECT]Recompiled Windows 7 Kernel

You guys might think, 'oh he's using VNC, or some other software, screen mirroring, blah blah blah FAKE' ...
This is not fake. Windows 7 is running on my Blaze 4G. I can assure you, a friend of mine recompiled the Windows 7 kernel in Ubuntu and sent me a zip file and an APK to reboot my phone into Windows 7. A lot of the Windows 7 components are missing, and some things don't work at all (like Google Chrome) and games, probably because there are no Adreno Windows drivers. Video playback doesn't work, Aero doesn't work, System Properties CTDs, and a plethora of other things don't work. I managed to get audio working with some fooling around, images read fine, and a few apps like Explorer and Paint work. WiFi works, Bluetooth doesn't, battery doesn't, soft keys don't do anything, power button doesn't work, volume buttons work but don't do anything (register on key functioning diagram) on-screen keyboard crashes, SD card works but is super buggy, and it gets hot REALLY FAST. the 1GiB of RAM gets cut down to about 512MB, and HDD space is the 1.4 GiB of app storage, most of which is taken up by shared (?) video memory for the Adreno.
Oh, and I forgot to mention...it is really slow. It took 27 minutes to boot. Other than many more bugs, it works. I am not uploading the apk or the zip because Microsoft would sue me for pirating or something, not to mention recompiling the Windows 7 kernel has some legality issues.

Oh yeah, you might notice all of the game icons on the taskbar, those are just empty shortcuts.
The fact that it takes a lot of memory to install Windows 7 completely concludes that this is fake and the use of VNC is possible. You do realize that 1.4 GB of space is not even enough for Ubuntu! This was a useless post. Hence even seeing all the installed programs on the taskbar. If they indeed shortcuts, they will need a program to lead to. In reality, you would need more space for Windows 7 to even boot up. 512mb of RAM? Good luck even getting the file explorer up. Indeed was a useless post. Probably one for attention.

Technically the min RAM for 32-bit is 1GB but you're right that this is fake
Kernel for windows is closed-source, you can't recompile it for ARM
Linux Kernel won't work on Windows so don't try to say you used that
1.5GB of space hasn't been sufficient to install Windows since like the ME days or even earlier
and there's probably a whole bunch of other logic wrong I'm not going to waste my time explaining to you

Adoptable storage question, storage always full

Hi all!
Yesterday I bought my Moto G 2015 (8GB) with a 32GB SD-card. I formatted the SD-card as 'adoptable storage', but after installing some (10+) apps, my internal memory was full. I thought that the adoptable storage was a solution for a full internal memory? Can anybody tell me how this works?
Trust me, I Googled a lot, but no one seemed to have the exact same problem.
I rooted the phone, and can't get Link2SD working.. I'm on 6.0 btw.
I'm also looking for an answer to this. Seems wrong to me.
When I put the card in, it asked if I wanted to use it for adoptable storage, I did.
Within a month, there are low memory warnings, although the SD Card is empty?

We've cleared the cache now, which has given some breathing room, but why hasn't it just expanded into the SD card?
Then, how do you explain the maths of this?
1.7GB + 7MB does not equal 3.38GB...
you will have some where an option to move your apk and datas to memorycard,
do onething.. goto APP INFO, search for move option..
Are you sure? That doesn't sound like adoptable storage. I thought it was supposed to blend internal and SD card into one. If I select to move to SD, that implies there is an SD... Instead of it all being one merged internal memory.
It also doesn't explain why there are low memory errors.
Facebook app lags or freezes on SD card (Adoptable Storage ). any solution ?
I have the same problem.
i bought a 64gb sd card but beside few apps and some directories you can't move everything to it.
I don't have any pictures, everything is on Google photos, i use CCleaner to remove everything every 2 days...
after a year my smartphone internal memory is 95% full with only the Google apps.
I can't even update them, Google play can't do it because of insufficient storage..
this morning i got notifications from the sms app saying there is not enough room for new msg
beside CCleaner to remove cache & tmp stuff i have no solution.
today I started to check how to resize the partitions, like /system for example: disk usage shows lots of free space there..
Did you migrate all data to the new adopted storage? Android won't start using the SD card as adopted storage until you do... in the Storage screen, press the 3 dot menu, is there an option to Move or Migrate data? If so, you never finished the adoption process and the card is just sitting there waiting for the adoption process to "finish" so to speak.
hi,yes i did this, it was the main idea when I bought the 64 gb ultra fast SD card.
like the op i though the SD card and the internal storage will be seen as a unique drive.
another idea: i'm using cm and i though maybe the Samsung original rom is better partitioned giving the user more free space..
---------- Post added at 08:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:35 AM ----------
to answer andycri, the weird math for the disk usage come from hidden space used by Android on /data
The 2 workarounds I have used on my Moto G 3rd Gen (2015) are:
1.a Go to Settings, Storage & USB.
1.b Touch Internal storage.
1.c Touch Cached data.
1.d Clear cached data? box appears. Touch OK.
2.a Touch Apps. And let it calculate and sort.
2.b Touch Google App.
2.c Touch the MANAGE SPACE button.
2.d Touch the CLEAR GOOGLE SEARCH DATA button.
2.e Touch OK.
2.f Touch the back arrow button.
2.g Exit Storage, Exit Settings.
That should make enough space to update your phone's apps, etc.
I have noticed (using Android Assistant) that a few photos and videos appear (reported as) in the internal memory but are really on the SD card. I suspect it is a non-repairable bug or feature to Android 6.0.1. If I was rooted I think I could verify the location of those errant data files.
Surprisingly, I have a Moto X 16gb where memory has never been a problem. My next phone is going to have the maximum internal memory, where memory should not be a problem.
