[Q] Rom development - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to build a Tom from AOSP, am a beginner and this will be my first. I see many current Roms have tweaks already setup like ram optimization and speed enhancements. Is there a central place to find these or are they all developed individually? I would like to add some of those to speed up my ROM. Thanks for the help experts!!

[ROM] Conical - development

This thread will be about general development of the Rom. I believe the thread conical lockscreen should be left alone to discuss the lockscreen. Currently my kernel works. Now all I need to do is properly package the ROM for flashing.

ROM properly packed and flashed to my phone. Upon startup device controls don't initiate. So no touch or controls other than power lockscreen button. Any ideas where is should look to remedy this.
Current build is AOSP eng Froyo with stock kernel

Tried a dream build to acquire touch controls but still no luck. Maybe I'm missing some proprietary binaries. Maybe it's in the frameworks. Anybody have any ideas. This is a AOSP build of Froyo

Seems the controls are in the framework. Using apktool to analyze framework I found HTC, print, Verizon and one other subdirectory. In the process of turning the smali code under out/smali/com/HTC/multitouch/ into java.

Is this ROM for the Incredible? If so, you'll probably get more help with it in the Incredible specific forum. I would recommend providing more information also. It's really hard to tell what you are asking.
Yes this ROM is intended for the Droid incredible(with eventual port to others). What my intentions are is to build a ROM from the AOSP Froyo source then customize. I don't want to use the stock image. Is this even possible? I don't see why not.

[Q] Kernel Construction

Hey guys,
I wanted to get a look into how you guys build kernels for new devices and phones, as I want to eventually build my own. Do you have a guide or series of pages I can read that gives me the basics?
Side Question: I am running cyanogen mod on my tbolt, what kernel out there do you recommend for speed and that functions well with cyanogen mod.

CodeName ISC Rom

Hi there,
I have a little doubt. Do someOne testes this Rom (codename ICS Rom) after having CM9 or Apex OR CyberGr?? If so, what do you think of it? is ot worth to flash?
How about speed & battery Life??
Thanks in advance
Just make a backup of your current rom and flash Codename. You'll find hundreds of responses and feedback in the Codename thread, not sure why you posted this here.

I know that. I posted here because usually the folks comment all about the Thread rom and dont really compare with other roms.
I would do a backup and then falsh the codename but my phone is almost full (11bg - games (gta3, 9mm, etc) so it will take some time to do that. Instead i wanted to hear some opinions.
Thanks anyway

I've done some work comparing ROMs, follow my link...
kernels ; battery ; ROM ; gov/sched
Now with summaries in the first posts. Convenient for XDA app users!
I think that now codename Android is the best, smoot, stable ROM, especially with speedy-7 kernel. it has a lot of improvements, mods, CA also have it's own app, from what you can download some new mods, update existing apps/mods/addons, so you got very useful all-in-one tool. My phone works perfect with liveoc 115%, CPU 920 deadline - ondemand.

[ROM] VanirAOSP [official] [nightlies] [4.4.4] organized, clean, fast.

Welcome to VanirAOSP. Our mission is to deliver a clean optimized version of Android with subtly improved versions of the features you love to as many devices as possible. we've tried to incorporate and improve our features in a way that makes them more cohesive to improve the overall user experience while correcting any performance regressions and improving functionality..
What to expect:
- This is not a McCopy ROM. What goes into our build is well thought-out and not a bunch of stuff duck taped together because we could.
- maximum optimization. We do our research. We test hard. We build -fstrict -O3 globally and include a massive array of code optimizations and memory leak fixes that we write ourselves and eventually submit to AOSP or Linaro.
- originality in our source. We generate a lot of new commits being features or general code improvements. We are open source to share and improve the community but we also try to make sure we offer a unique experience.
- aesthetics.. hopefully in your opinion
General features:
stock mode - ability revert to stock AOSP code with the exception of a few custom features we chose to keep active
enhanced performance.. longer uptime with less slowdown
custom written CRON and init.d.
UI and graphics improvements
custom navbar, navring, and hardware key features
halo (active display & lockscreen notifications are in review)
usability improvements like power reboot menu and sound
animation control
Improved Vanir keyboard
CM's profiles & quicksettings
additional quicksetting tiles
immersive mode
statusbar mods
clock & battery mods
lockscreen blur and other mods
soon to come -> quick cam and flash notifications
busybox, embedded root, init.d, cron etc
yatta yatta yatta
more to come when i feel like updating the op

What the difference in the two files? I assume we want prime? I'll test this out later and see how it is. Thanks for sharing.

i suggest D01-13. it's newer and is set up like ATOM which is my personal ROM. the Vanir version is just the previous release i made on N7
Runs great, thank you and appreciate your efforts, and the share.

you new to flashing custom ROMs?
every time you change ROMs you should factory reset. it will keep your sdcard contents. as far as saved games it probably depends on the developer that made the game but it should hang on to them.

uhhmm yea i guess. i think somebody from droidhive was flashing my builds actually haha.
i'll see if i can figure it out tomorrow. i've been meaning to get a nexus 4 build set up too i just don't have the device or know anybody that could test it for me.
So far, this with Bricked .58 seems to be rock solid and blazing fast. It's about time we got the 4.2.1 performing like 4.1.2.

that picture is the 4.1.2 version of my galaxy nexus rom that uses the same source. i no longer include the version # in the pulldown and i use the stock icons because of theme chooser. i didn't steer very var from AOSP to leave it up to the user to decide how they want the ROM to look.
also, it should be noted that instead of using a ROM control app like AOKP or most other ROMs i decided it was more intuitive to include the features in their respective menus ie sound options under the sound setting header rather than having them in both settings AND rom control. look around there are a lot of subtle additions. to turn on developer options click on the build in about phone 7 times. in there is the reboot menu toggle. i felt this was a good place since the developer options are disabled for non-owner users with multiuser. that way somebody's kids don't reboot into recovery and cause havoc lol.

in the eclipse thread. there's a bunch of inverted GAPPs out there. i'm having somebody put together an aroma installer for me right now that contains both regular and inverted gapps. pretty excited. also working on an inverted theme chooser theme to include with the ROM. options options!

stock AOSP. we don't have a kernel developer for the N7 and i haven't really had time to extensively test any of them out. feel free to flash whatever works best on your device though. I've had good luck with bricked and motley.

build.prop tweaks specific to Stock JB 4.1.2 leak 1

We used to have build.prop threads like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1512368&page=3 & this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342638&page=3.
Obviously the OS has evolved since our GB days so in specific to JB 4.1.2 leak 1 it'll be great if you guys can chip in with your tried & tested build.prop tweaks & make this as a refreshed compilation thread for the benefit of all users. Cheers~RAD7
Added this in Q&A section as it may entail a lot of Q&A's, MOD's please move to General if required
I have used the fwd.max_users= mod on my ATRIX running 4.2.1 to enable multi users
*edit fw.max_users=[insert number >1 here]

Thanks for the share Zach, it's a start!
In order to switch users you have to turn the lock screen to landscape mode

It'd be great if you guys can share values tweaked on A2 stock JB 4.1.2 leak 1 using apps like ROM Toolbox Pro (Kernel tweaks - Sysctl tweaks) or tweaks for the stock 5 Governor's (values) or by using Android Tuner app as well (Entropy control) etc etc.
