at this point, would you recommend a ---? - HTC Sensation

i am still on stock sensation 4g and havent rooted. still cant decide if i should do it the official way or the unofficial way. more importantly, i am not sure if i should install a kernel. the furthest thing im thinking about is a rom. i came from using cyan on the n1 but since word is cyan wont do sense im thinking on opting out of installing a rom.
what are your thoughts on installing a rom and/or kernel?
and also, what would you recommend on a rom and/or kernel?
...along with any other things i might need to go from stock to custom to IMPROVE my sensation 4g?

ROMs are one of these things you have to try on your own. Just do a backup and try whichever ROM has the features that seem appealing to you and if you like one, stick to it or restore to your back up.

Do not get s-off on your phone through the official way from htc!!!!!! Second its a rom you should be flashing after that and not a custom kernel. All you want to do is s-off and flash a nice rom k. Thats it! Dont worry about anything else right now.

[Q] kernel vs ROM vs theme

what is the difference between the three? are they suppose to be combined? which one is most useful for the sensation
The kernel is a small file that you flash that pretty much runs the phone... And tells it how to run. A Rom is the actual OS on the phone.. it's everything you see. A theme just changes the look of the Rom... Usually wallpaper and menu color etc....
I guess if I had to compare it to a car... Kernel = engine
Rom = car
Theme = paint job

LOL, a ton of answers to that, most folks have personal preferences. It's the most often asked question.
I guess the first question is Sense or AOSP based. This is a more fundamental change than the Theme. Using the car analogy, 4 x 4 with loads of bling vs a pruned down sports car. ;-)) Then again I use CM7 as I wanted a lighter (ASOP) system.
Best advice is to flash a few ROMs and decide for yourself. They are all good, just some do bits better than others. Just remember to take plenty of Nandroid backups so you can revert back if needed.
EDIT: Meant to add that any ROM you install will also include a "base" kernel. So install a ROM and it's good to go.

If you want a non-Sense ROM, I think that CM7 is the best, very smooth, stable. CM9 with Ice Cream Sandwich should be out soon too. I use bricked kernel, but faux is very good too.
If you want a Sense (3.0 or 3.5) ROM, InsertCoin or Revolution HD are both very good, pick one, try and decide ;-)
so when you take nandriod backup for your current ROM, how do get back to it for extraction? and how do do you back up 2 ROMs without deleting the other? where do the back ups go (SD card or internal)?

Hi,
Nandroid backups are stored on your sd card in /sd card/clockworkmod/backup.
You can make as many as your sd card can hold.
In order to get a ROM back, simply "restore" it from within CWM.
firmware vs ROM
sorry for stupid question, although I wanna ask what is the difference between firmware and ROM? is flashing the firmware the same thing as flashing ROM?
Firmwear is kinda like what runs the Rom, if you don't have the correct firmwear your Rom won't work or bootloop. So its VERY important to flash the correct firmware with your Rom. If its ICS based Rom the firmweare is 3.32. That will need to be changed if you want a GB based Rom. Just make sure when flashing its the same firmweare as you have. Usually if your unsure the firmware is available to flash with the Rom. I hope this helps! Have fun!
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G
this is a bit of topic, but when you flash firmware , you actually flash the kernel, right? you get ftf package. then after unpacking it there is a kernel.sin(.img etc) file which you flash to your phone. I am new to this stuff so I wanna be sure how it really works
Yes that's right and for Rom Most any Rom will INCLUDE,a good base kernel so you can flash the firmweare, flash the Rom and be good. Hope this helps.

Kernel questions?

I'm running opensensation cm9 (latest version). the last few builds have been hell on my battery, on a full charge im getting 5 hours with no wifi bluetooth and so forth. my phone like overheated today and took forever to finally boot back up. someone mentioned switching kernels, idk anything about how that works or which ones are safe to use on which roms. any help would be nice. thanks.
Installing a kernel is done the same way you flashed the rom. Flash the zip file in your recovery.
I think your choices right now are either stock opensense kernel or faux's cm9/aosp kernel. Also, I don't think developers release kernels dangerous for your phone. Worst case scenario your phone gets stuck in a bootloop and you have to go back to stock kernel or reflash your rom.
Just keep in mind that a rom like that which is in alpha stage will have bugs that won't be fixed by just switching kernels. Luckily Vorbeth has been working nonstop on Opensense. One would think he was getting paid to dev.. Lol
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk
I don't really recommend switching kernels since Vorbeth has done kernel-level fixes for OpenSensation. Flashing a different kernel has a good chance of breaking something in the ROM...until the wake lock issue is figured out, I suggest using a stable Sense ROM like Android Revolution HD or Virtuous Inquisition if you still want the ICS AOSP look.

Jumping on the Sensation Boat

Hey guys!
I'm coming from the T-Mobile LG G2X, and I'm wondering about some things.
In terms of contrast, which phone is better? The Sensation, or the G2X..
(I heard there is 2 different panel, the AUO and the SHARP) Which one is better? Which one have better contrast, and better color?
This processor is a S3, is this S3 similar to the Amaze S3, but the sensation is downclocked which can be OC using a custom kernel.. Am I correct?
Is Qualcomm Snapdragon more open source than Nvidia Tegra 2? One of the reason I'm jumping to the sensation is the Tegra 2 is pretty CLOSED SOURCE.
Edit: How much free ram on ICS do you guys have?
Edit2: I'm getting headaches just by reading how to get S-OFF, CWM, Etc... Anyone wanna simplify it for me?
How to get CWM on it, than install custom ROM (ICS), and than install a custom kernel.... Can I install CWM w/o S-Off?
Sorry for many questions...
Say I use the HTC Dev unlock..
Can I flash custom rom, custom kernels? Because that is pretty much all I need.
If I use the revolution S-Off, what advantage does that provide? I also saw HBoot 1.27 can not use Recolution S-Off...
Expiation will be great.
Thanks!

well, it all depends on what hboot your device has. if it is from 1.17 - 1.18 i think you can use revolutionary s-off. which aside from the usual htc dev unlock gives you full write access to the nand, so you can flash kernals, remove sim lock, gain supercid ect. if you have a higher hboot you can unlock using htc dev and then use jupuntubear to s-off afterwards. htcdev = you can do recoverys and some roms, depending if they have the same baseband as you. s-off can unlock everything so you can flash what you like.
one you are s-off you can flash a recovery using the pg58img.zip to hboot method or by using the control app for 4ext. once thats install flash the superuser zip and your rooted and ready to go. as for specs in not too sure

for being new to sensation i suppose u need to read here

if u get it u should do htc dev unlock and jaubuntu bear method to do s-off
good luck

I'm not on sensation yet, but I'm thinking of getting one in 2 weeks.
Say I use HTC Dev, than I can ONLY flash kernel and Rom with the same RUU Version or w.e right? Say I'm on a ICS RUU, I can't flash a GB.. Correct?
If I get Revolution S-Off or the Bear S-Off, I can flash anything I want.
One question, I can't seem to find is, what is SUPERCID?
SuperCID means you can flash any variant of the stock ROM. It's pretty irrelevant in my eyes.
Ahhh. Useless for me...
So if I use HTC Dev, I can only flash the rom with the SAME Rom version, and kernel version... Eg: Stock kernel with modified stock kernel, stock rom with modified speedy rom.
If I use S-Off the beer way, I can flash anything I want, right?
How hard is this phone to brick on a scale of /10?
If you can choose between the two, go with revolutionary, HTC dev will void your warranty and then afterwards you have to do junoptobear to get the same benefits that you get from revolutionary. Also Id reccomend 4ext recovery.
Also supercid is relevant because there are devs here from all over the place and it will be less worrisome if you just supercid, it only takes two command lines
Sent from my sensational sensation 4g
After reading a few posts "bricking" is fairly easy to do. So be careful and read everything carefully..do not do the HTC Dev unlock..I have read a lot of people having problems that way us the revolutionary method. that is what I used.
I basically followed this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
and upon reading everything about a hundred times and asking a few questions...I managed to get s-off, CWM and root!
Hope this helps...I stayed with a GB ROM not an ICS some people have been having problems because you have to flash a new ICS Firmare and there is risk of bricking with that as well.
I suggest using ENERGY GB ROM 3.5 I love it and it has a better camera in it..i think it is the amaze camera driver.

Yes but they both have same contrast and res just different manufacturer and a batch of one of them got dust.
This processor is a S3, is this S3 similar to the Amaze S3, but the sensation is downclocked which can be OC using a custom kernel.. Am I correct?
Yes the only difference is the clock speed I believe.
Is Qualcomm Snapdragon more open source than Nvidia Tegra 2? One of the reason I'm jumping to the sensation is the Tegra 2 is pretty CLOSED SOURCE.
Well theyve released drivers and gls for ics but I don't know how it is on the g2x.
Edit: How much free ram on ICS do you guys have?
Depends if its sense or asop, or are you talking about stock?

S-off=All partitions have read write permissions
HTC Dev=Only System partition, boot partition, and recovery partition have read write permissions. Plus you have to use 4EXT Recovery and enable smart flash, or flash the boot.img manually of the ROM you want to use to flash the kernel.
Super CID=You no longer have your carriers ID on your device so you can flash a ROM with any carrier Id on it, it does not have to have your carrier ID.
SuperCID, so say It's TMOUSA, I can flash a rom from TMOEU?
And....
So with S-OFF, I can switch between GB and ICS, and any kernel I want..
With S-ON, I can only flash certain roms, and certain kernel...
Man, anyone know where I can get a HBOOT < 1.18?
Edit: Say I'm on GB right now, and I want ICS, but I have S-Off.. Do I still need to flash the ICS firmware 3.2 to use ARHD?
HTC makes it so confusing compared to Samsung and LG Devices.. X_X
Thanks guys! I really appreciate you guys helping me.
I made the same transition and much prefer my Sensation. While the G2X devs are certainly talented, Nvidia's driver policies got in the way of decent ICS roms. Qualcomm, while not as good as TI or Samsung, still does a much better job of releasing drivers and sources relevant to development than Nvidia. As for bricking, it is easier to brick than the G2X, but generally only in select instances, such as when trying to go back in s-on or formatting your sd card in an aosp rom (now fixed). The G2X screen is probably a little higher quality but the extra screen resolution on the Sensation makes it better in my opinion. Overall, what I prefer most about the Sensation is that the dev support is fantastic, second only to my HD2. (Nothing will ever beat that though.)

Mainly just for warranty or if you want to sell.
And yes but flashing a firmware isn't had you just put it on the sd card, go into bootloader and let it flash, take fw file off sd card after finished then flash an ics Rom I know you're used to cwm but 4ext is the standard for a large amount of roms and mods here, if you install with cwm it will usually work but you'll be missing out on some stuff. If it helps, 4ext is based off cwm. Sorry if it seems like in trying to shove 4ext down your throat....
I thought modifying this phone was going to be really challenging compared to my old LG but once I had it in my hands I was running ordroid in less than 2 hours

Alright, one last question. How often do you have to flash a firmware to flash a custom rom? (Do you have to flash the firmware even with S-Off?)
I see people say flashing other rom makes them stuck on boot screen? Something aobut firmware...
Compared to my LG G2X, this is like making me jump through hoops..
Any btw, <1.18HBoot is GB, and 1.27HBoot is ICS mostly for ppl that did the ICS update, right?
Just want to sort out everything before I buy this phone..
If you want an ICS ROM, then you'll need the ICS firmware, it's pretty simple really.

Just once. After you get your 1.27HBoot (I assume we are talking about ICS upgrades and ROMs here, right?) then you should proceed to flash the 3.32 firmware (there are excellent threads with a metric ton of instructions on how to do this) - after that point the ICS world is yours (at least that's how it went for me: I used the noob-proof tool from the stickied thread in Android Development section, then went to determine which firmware I need, flashed it, flashed 4ext and now I enjoy the latest and greatest both in stock Android and in HTC specific (i.e. Sense 4.0, kudos to OrDroid)
Honestly, it's kinda of a shock when you go through it initially but the stickied threads are very good, the one-click tool is effin amazin and after you go through the "zomfg I void me warranty me wants me mommy" stage then you are good to go - plus if you really don't like anything you get, you can just flash in the original ROM, right?

[q] why is everyone excited about ota ics

Seems like everyone was complaining, saying the OTA was never coming and now that it is here they are complaining again. Why would you want to go back to stock, just so you can get the official release when it is for sure filled with a bunch of things you don't want or need (apps bloatware) then you are going to root it and go flash a custom ROM anyways. I am on Energy GB ROM and I am really hesitant to flash to ICS because this ROM works so well. When I was stock I would get restarts, Sense would constantly reload and a bunch of other things. I don't want to have to flash a ROM then flash a bunch of fixes after just to make it stable just to have ICS on my device. Sorry just wanted to make a few points. If anyone could post some key features of the Official OTA ICS Update and why it would be better than a custom ROM I would appreciate it.
Final question. How many of you reverted back to stock just get the OTA and what is so cool about it?
I am wondering the same thing.. what does stock OTA ICS have over custom roms?
The only two things I can think of is (1) keeping warranty, and (2) more stability since it's an official update
A lot of times the custom roms are more stable. The GB rom I am running is a lot smoother and more stable than when I got my sensation out of the box.
I agree, on stock I would be having the device reboot all the time! Drove me Crazy!
On my custom Rom, it has NEVER done that! So I say pass on the update also! I'm running Android 4.0.3 now with custom rom, why ruin a good thing i say!

How do you compare the camera on the stock GB compared to the camera on your ROM now.I love the amaze camera mod on this NRG ROM.
I myself had actually considered reverting back to stock from sensation 4g running virtuous 4.02 ics, but that was only so I could get my WiFi calling back, and to see if it was any more stable..... But then I realized that since I flashed Virtuous Inquisition, I haven't had ANY problems at all, and now there's a fix for WiFi calling, so I can't imagine why I would go back to stock. Phew, I'm glad I came to my SENSEs before doing something I probably would ended up regretting, and then spending time to have to revert and re-root.
Custom roms ain't all they're cracked up to be. Too many issues. I'm on stock and rooted and it works just fine. I don't see what's so great about custom roms. Eye candy? Custom boot animations? I would rather have stability and reliability.

I think that it's not as much about the eyecandy, so to speak, but more to do with the fine tuning and tweaks available in the custom roms that you just can't get with stock. There's nothing wrong with anyone leaning one way or the other, just a matter of preference and of what you use the phone for.

[Q] Complete noob question about flashing custom from stock ics

Hey all,
I'm complete noob about flashing. When I had GB - that was quite simple, but now I'm on last official ICS stock from HTC, and I'm totally angry for this. This rom it's just crap. I want to flash to a custom rom, and I don't know how on ICS, there is any solution? Noob proof? I want to change to some stable, smooth, and maybe non-sense rom? Can some1 help me? Will be very nice, if this rom will have wifi/bt switches in quick settings, and auto sys-updates (ota)

yes, only this method for now.
read it carefully
I'll be able to back to stock if needed? (To send it to service for ex.). It's really needed to change cid? IS there any custom rom with OTA?
Yes you need to change cid, yes you can change back if needed. Try out a few roms, see what you like they all are really great. It's just a matter of personal preference. I'm not understanding what you mean by Rom with ota. Over the air Rom? Or do you
Mean a Rom like the ota update? If so, yes there is. Hope this helps

But most important - I want ALL functions to be working. Sense 4... ahm, I fall in love with Sense 4
Help me to choose, pls. Battery is important too, and smooth. But I think smooth is very good on most future ROMS

You can get s-off with the juopunutbear method. Which now does not need the htc dev-off, so htc does not know you are tinkering with your phone.
Returning your phone completely to stock can be done, but from what i've read it can be tricky as you must become S-ON again. (however, there is a unbrickable team here).
There is a way to flash with S-ON but it requires HTC DEV unlock, and for you to manually flash the boot.img, and keep the stock kernel. A noob myself i went for the whole S-OFF, lets bring it on experience.
From what I read on a local forum in my country, Ordroid gives you the sense 4 experience. And the developer regularly updates his / her rom.
Then again there is sense 4 from Baadnewz (insertcoin) and many more. A popular sense 3.6 rom is ARHD.
You can flash different kernels to increase your battery life.
As for the vanilla ICS, you can either go for CM9 (respect to Vorbeth) or the AOKP. The latter is based on the cm9 nightlies (i believe). I run such a rom. I love the vanilla looks and the added tweaks.
However, I believe recent nighlies have worse battery life. And there is an audio routing issue. For full reliability you might consisder those sense.
what's vanilla and aokp?
Please help?
