Kernel questions? - HTC Sensation

I'm running opensensation cm9 (latest version). the last few builds have been hell on my battery, on a full charge im getting 5 hours with no wifi bluetooth and so forth. my phone like overheated today and took forever to finally boot back up. someone mentioned switching kernels, idk anything about how that works or which ones are safe to use on which roms. any help would be nice. thanks.

Installing a kernel is done the same way you flashed the rom. Flash the zip file in your recovery.
I think your choices right now are either stock opensense kernel or faux's cm9/aosp kernel. Also, I don't think developers release kernels dangerous for your phone. Worst case scenario your phone gets stuck in a bootloop and you have to go back to stock kernel or reflash your rom.
Just keep in mind that a rom like that which is in alpha stage will have bugs that won't be fixed by just switching kernels. Luckily Vorbeth has been working nonstop on Opensense. One would think he was getting paid to dev.. Lol
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk

I don't really recommend switching kernels since Vorbeth has done kernel-level fixes for OpenSensation. Flashing a different kernel has a good chance of breaking something in the ROM...until the wake lock issue is figured out, I suggest using a stable Sense ROM like Android Revolution HD or Virtuous Inquisition if you still want the ICS AOSP look.

[Q] stable but still bugs ?

hey, ive been trying to figure out which custom rom + kernel combination should i use but in every rom i'm reading some or the other complaining about something not working, losing signal, or sudden batttery loss, random reboots
is ther a reliable custom rom out ther ? .. because i dont wanna miss out on an important call or message or e-mail at the right time
i really liked what brainmasters miui and kelmsking have done with their roms but still even though its written stable but users aint feeling it to b stable.
i wud like ur opinions on this, and also if u all could help me find a stable rom like the stock one. i am always travelling so i cant afford to have a buggy phone cuz i wudnt have time to go to my computer to do something about it.
i know i have read it many times ther is no best rom cuz its personal choice, but still i want to knw more about stable roms

What's GPA18? I just got my S a week ago, I downgraded from a HTC Sensation and I'm going to use this for a while until Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, but I'm using OXYGEN's rom right now. Stock kernel it comes with and everything, and it's pretty stable for me, great battery life, sometimes I lose data but that's because of the radio update, but other than that, it's great.
gpa 18 is peter alfonso rom, gpa 18 is still not stable though ..
Hi,
I tried CyanogenMod7 (Nightly Builds and Stable version 7.1.0), MIUI (latest version) and Oxygen 2.3.1.
CM7: This is a great ROM but I got random reboot or asking my PIN code. I only have Google Apps, nothing about G+ 2.0 or GWallet. I got those issue since a while on Nightly Builds.
MIUI: if you like IPhone style, this is a great ROM too. None reboot.
Oxygen: this is also a nice ROM. You need to custom it with Go Launcher, GO Weather, GO SMS, DSP Manager... because this is a little raw but, nothing to say only stable.
Performances are pretty good.
There is also NSCollab ROM which is built off Cyanogen Mod,and its a combination of both stock and Cyanogen which I've found to be more stable probably cause of the kernel I.e Matr1x which is built off the stock kernel
I'm using NSCollab 1.0.50 right now and I haven't had any issue yet
I tried netarchy and Trinity kernels with NSCollab but matr1x seems to be the best with NSCollab, gives me a Quadrant of 3000 at 1Ghz
Sent from my Expensive Magical Brick.
Brainmasters MIUI is my fav. No reboots no signal loss when installed clean.

You could go stock deodexed, zip-aligned and with newest radio. You could play with kernels for BLN, Voodoo, and OC. Stable but with a few goodies.

[Q] Sensation with Revolution HD Glitch, please help.

I am running Mike's Android Revolution HD based on HTC Sensation "non-XE" HTC base ROM and am experiencing a strange glitch. I would have posted this in the developers section but I have under 10 posts.
I have a Rooted S-OFF Sensation running this ROM and it works very well, exept for one thing. When my TMOUS Sensation's screen turns off, I normally can just hit the top button and the unlock screen comes right up, but sometimes, the lockscreen does not come up and I am forced to pull the battery on my phone. This happenes about once every couple of days. I have tried wiping and reflashing to no avail.
Please help.

Hi,
Which ROM are you running, and with which kernel?
Clean install, upgrade, what have you wiped before you started.
You need to provide some more information,so that you can get the correct help.
Info
Mike's Android Revolution HD based on HTC Sensation "non-XE" HTC base ROM 4.1.6, I have tried wiping using Mike's Superwipe and reflashing this version (Newest version) twice, same issue, I am running 2.6.35.14-Sensation-faux123-v0.2.3r+ Kernel and my radio version is 10.58.9035.00p_10.15.9035.02_2. I flashed the newest radio listed for this ROM, oddly, it is suposed to be 10.58.9035.00u, I use T-Mobile so that could be affecting it.

Hi,
Thank you.
There are known issues with that kernel.
I suggest you try the latest kernel, which you can find in my signature.
Go into recovery,
Wipe your cache partition and dalvik,
Flash the kernel,(exactly like a ROM)
reboot and enjoy.
Flashed newest Faux Kernel.
I flashed the new kernel, and I also flashed your battery mod, looks great btw
One last question, isnt my baseband suposed to be U and not P? why does it say P despite the fact I flashed the newest one for this ROM? and will it negatively affect performance?

Hi,
Glad you like the mod.
Those letters in the radio just refer to the carrier, and do not affect the performance in any way.
Thanks!
Awsome, I really really apprechiate it.
Thank you!
hey shenoka.. how is it?
I am really annoyed with this rom... I used it for my desire hd and never had a problem with it.. since I started using it on my sensation mike screwed it up massively... He is too stubborn to use the bricked kernel which rips on the faux rubbish that he is using now. I switched over to insertcoin because of this massive stuff up. So many people have complained about it and it took him this long to fix it if he hasn't already. The faux kernel is a joke and has always frozen up and have to be rebooted on me even especially in the morning when u expect the alarm to go off but the stupid faux kernel doesn't think it should go off.
And this same problem was happening for me on the de version so it definitely has to do with the kernel.
Anyways enough of my frustration has been let off about this rom. How is the new 0.2.5.2 kernel? Because I know that the 0.2.3r was rubbish for me and still did the stupid screen not turning on. I'm not going back to this rom until I am certain that the kernel won't do this same thing again.
Also has anyone noticed that with this rom u also have to sometimes fight to turn off the screen because it turns back on when u only click the power button once? Doesn't happen on insertcoin.

Why so much hate for 2 devs that are giving their wares away for FREE? There are numerous posts (today & yesterday even) on the development thread discussing how this happens, the fact that yes it is the faux kernel that has the bug, and how to install bricked if you wish.
Your frustration is understood. Isn't it nice to have so many choices of ROMs/kernels for your phone for free? I think these devs deserve more respect.

Installing AOKP

Hi everyone, this is my first post in the sensation forums. Here is my question. A friend of mine has the sensation in stock form and wants to me to install AOKP on it. I've been reading up on how to get s-off and installing cwr. Now I have a vibrant and if on a stock or froyo rom installing a cm7 rom is recommended prior to installing any ics rom to get partitions and such correctly. Is there a rom that needs to be flashed before I can flash his sensation with the aokp rom or is it safe to flash straight from stock rom. Thanks in advanced.
Sent from tapatalk V2 B6 from ics powered vibrant
The process goes basically like this:
A) Unlock the bootloader by means of Revolutionary.io
B) Root the Stock Rom
C) Flash 4EXT recovery from the APK downloaded at 4ext.net
D) Download the 3.32 unlocked firmware from the dev thread.
E) Put firmware PG58IMG file on root of SD card and hit up the bootloader, apply firmware.
F) Remove firmware file from SD card so you can get to 4EXT recovery from the bootloader.
G) Put rom on SD card, reboot into recovery, flash rom.
Only one problem is that AOKP isn't really supported, or 100% ready to roll on this device. Virtuous Inquisition or ARHD + Shnizlon's AOSP mod is a much more stable, feature-packed approach.
Thanks sshede, that's a pretty good tut you wrote for me there. And I'll definitely search and look into the roms you recommend. And also time for me to start downloading all those files and the drivers for his phone. I probably won't mod his phone till this weekend so it will give me more time to do my reading up. Thanks once again.

Lol wut. Aokp is faster, more stable and smoother than VI. I have been using it for like 1 month without a single reboot. Only few bugs (480p camcorder) that don't affect the experience at all. Give it a try, you will think CM is a joke after using AOKP's ROM Control (which is a compilation of a LOT of tweaks/mods/etc).

Totally subjective. Some people prefer 480p because it doesn't use nearly as much space. Bluetooth isn't 100% functioning either. It may not bother you, but some people need them. And I've tried my fair share of both Sense and AOSP-based roms, nothing is more stable than Sense-based roms right now. All the drivers are straight from HTC, nothing's been patched together.

Yes. The main problem I had with VI was the random black screen of death. Had to pull battery away every couple days as the phone wouldn't turn back on. That's why I don't like that ROM.
And, well, its personal preferences

[q] why is everyone excited about ota ics

Seems like everyone was complaining, saying the OTA was never coming and now that it is here they are complaining again. Why would you want to go back to stock, just so you can get the official release when it is for sure filled with a bunch of things you don't want or need (apps bloatware) then you are going to root it and go flash a custom ROM anyways. I am on Energy GB ROM and I am really hesitant to flash to ICS because this ROM works so well. When I was stock I would get restarts, Sense would constantly reload and a bunch of other things. I don't want to have to flash a ROM then flash a bunch of fixes after just to make it stable just to have ICS on my device. Sorry just wanted to make a few points. If anyone could post some key features of the Official OTA ICS Update and why it would be better than a custom ROM I would appreciate it.
Final question. How many of you reverted back to stock just get the OTA and what is so cool about it?
I am wondering the same thing.. what does stock OTA ICS have over custom roms?
The only two things I can think of is (1) keeping warranty, and (2) more stability since it's an official update
A lot of times the custom roms are more stable. The GB rom I am running is a lot smoother and more stable than when I got my sensation out of the box.
I agree, on stock I would be having the device reboot all the time! Drove me Crazy!
On my custom Rom, it has NEVER done that! So I say pass on the update also! I'm running Android 4.0.3 now with custom rom, why ruin a good thing i say!

Here's one reason: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26117743
It's not always that people are looking to apply the stock rom, but sometimes what pieces they can get from it.
LOL, good point but besides working wifi calling.
my Wi-Fi calling is working on my custom Rom, as is camera, hotspot, tethering ect. I've checked them all. I'm greatful all working! These developers are Genius! I am soo thankful for them!

How do you compare the camera on the stock GB compared to the camera on your ROM now.I love the amaze camera mod on this NRG ROM.
I myself had actually considered reverting back to stock from sensation 4g running virtuous 4.02 ics, but that was only so I could get my WiFi calling back, and to see if it was any more stable..... But then I realized that since I flashed Virtuous Inquisition, I haven't had ANY problems at all, and now there's a fix for WiFi calling, so I can't imagine why I would go back to stock. Phew, I'm glad I came to my SENSEs before doing something I probably would ended up regretting, and then spending time to have to revert and re-root.
Custom roms ain't all they're cracked up to be. Too many issues. I'm on stock and rooted and it works just fine. I don't see what's so great about custom roms. Eye candy? Custom boot animations? I would rather have stability and reliability.

I think that it's not as much about the eyecandy, so to speak, but more to do with the fine tuning and tweaks available in the custom roms that you just can't get with stock. There's nothing wrong with anyone leaning one way or the other, just a matter of preference and of what you use the phone for.

ending with custom ROMS, how to get back to stock

Hi. So my problem is, that I've tried almost every custom rom that exists and I thought that Rayman's CM10 will be the last one cause everyone told me that it works totally fine and it's stable. I have to do like 8 restarts per day, cause after a few sleeps the sound goes off, I have slow scrolling, bad reactions of the display. I'm just sick of it and I'm done with all the experiments.
So can anyone link me to some post where I can find how do I get to the Asus stock ICS rom from Rayman's CM10? I'd probably just ROOT it and get drivers for the 3G USB modem and don't do anything else.. I downloaded all the apps I wanted, it took me many hours and I just want something where I don't have to do wipe again.. Something working and stable..
Thanks in advance.
You can get TF101 stock firmwares from the ASUS official website.
and isn't there any problem with the CWM recovery or anything else? can I just install it here?
Last time I reset I flashed latest stock from Asus' then flashed CWM using easyflasher ( showthread.php?t=1688012 ). It also allows for RogueXM that's based on CWM and it provides 1-click root as well.

AOKP with guevors aokp ics kernel or raymanfx haromny ics is very stable i used it for months after the rr rob

I'm on EOS 3 with K.A.T kernel for the last two or so weeks and haven't had even the slightest problem. Compared with the stock firmware its at least twice as smooth and afaik the best 3D performance of any rom so far, id give it a try before going back to stock.
that sounds great, I want it to be STABLE, that's the most important thing, I can't stand all the freezing. I'll give it a shot, never tried any different kernel
AOKP with Guevors kernel for aokp if you want the dl i have the kernel and Raymanfx harmony ics are very stable ics on AOKP
