Hey, was bored so i made this dock out of the samsung galaxy s box, have a go if your feeling creative
See attachments for finished product
GUIDE:
You need:
Knife/scissors (also a screwdriver (thin as possible) is helpfull)
Galaxy s box (and inserts)
Cocktail sticks x2 (dont need if you use a STRONG glue)
Optional:
Coins (to add weight)
tape/glue (if you want a little extra support, not needed though)
Heres a quick guide and some pics to help are in the attachments
!)Get the foam piece that the phone sits in when you first get it
2)Cut holes to allow cables to go through foam and plug into phone
3)Cut the foam side opposite the side that you cut the holes in to.
4)cut corner off the box which has the documentation in it.
5)Stick the bit of foam you cut off the box into the rim of the corner you cut of (the glue used to stick it to the original box should be sufficent so you dont need to add your own)
6)use cocktail sticks cut to make them shorter to attach the back bit you just made to the front.
7)Add coins inside back if you want more weight and stablility (use tape to secure)
8)Done!
This is really cool! I've been looking for a good dock so I can charge and have it plugged to speakers as well. Might make my own with the box too like you did. Very creative! Will need lots of time though. Thanks for posting this!
Excellent post. With a bit of tweaking you could also integrate speakers in there somewhere.
I'll buy 1

Lol i just need to find box my phone came in...
Excellent way to recycle the box
If you phone needs a claim within the warranty period then you've just destroyed the packaging it came in - same if you want to sell your phone on in the future...
I like to keep my boxes safe and pristine - even keep the cable ties and screen protection film...
Awesome idea man!
Nice dock, I probably won't attempt it myself in this iteration though as I don't want to butcher up my box.
Awesome
Really cool.
I Already ordered the phone, and this will be one of the first thing i'll do.
It's a great idea!
Doing something similar to mine. Is there any good dock aps for the vibrant?
Never mind. Found Car Home and Desk Home in the market from samsung
.
LOL
This post really made me laugh sooo hard. Thanks.
I won't be doing this, but very creative idea. You are a little Martha Stewert in the making.
Maybe I can add some tips. To make the cardboard box more sturdy and water proof. Get some clear polyurethane, add a coat of polyeurethane. It will make it more sturdy, thicker, and water proof.

For warranty claims don't they just send you the phone and you send yours back? I do see where it can make a difference in selling the phone though.
Brilliant! But I will try to replicate this with other boxes around the house..
I like to keep the boxes for added value in case I want to sell the phone (what I might think will not happen anytime soon
Thanks for the tip anyway

I think DeskHome only launches your Dock App (according to comments), which the Galaxy S does not have. So be careful before buying it, might be useless.

Should charge the phone at least? And it's not impossible to launch your own apps after connecting it... So saying "useless" is a bit of a stretch.

Huh? I was talking about the mentioned application "DeskHome". All it does is start the "docking station" mode of the phone, so it will probably not work with the Galaxy S. That would be a 1 $ waste....
Just download the dock app using My Market app. Set it to T-mobile.

So i ordered the transformer, and it should be here tomorrow.
now, i work at a autobody supply store, and i have access to all the new amazing paints, and i was wondering, does the back come off on this? i'd really like to paint it a different color, as well as protect it.
if it doesnt, that will just mean i have to do about 5x the work to make it look good, but i'm okay doing that.

If u find a way on removing the back please share with us
ALL parts are removable on ANYTHING given the right tools...and if you don't care about what the end result looks like...
Painting and reinforcing the back is going to add weight to something that I consider already heavy for its kind. I wouldn't touch it personally.

its automotive paint. i can paint and clearcoat it, it would add probably about 15g to the total weight, but would have the durability of your car hood.
custom colors + insane scratch resistance + ability to be cleaned up easily is worth the 15-25g extra weight.

There were a few threads showing units that had started to separate. The pictures implied the the back was sort of pressed on. Check some of the threads complaining about build quality and creaks and you'll find the pictures.
BTW, when you get it painted post some pictures!!!!
I am starting a summer internship next week at a company that doesn't allow cameras. I need to permanently disable the camera. What's the best way? My thought was black epoxy. I've only ever done one before, but it was a crappy flip phone so I just took tools to it until I managed to break the camera, not doing that on the Cappy.
It isn't difficult to disassemble the captivate and remove the camera altogether. The you would just have to contend with the opening.
How strict are they and how do they enforce the policy? Can you just uninstall or freeze the camera software so it can't function? If you use a cover for it, can you permanently seal the camera opening?
Yes, I know there are easy ways for you to still take a picture, but is it enough to show a "good faith" attempt to disable it?
Sent from my Cappy.
Might be able to spray some plasti-dip on the lens (after masking everything else off) to cover it up semi-permanently. It won't come off until you try to peel it off and wont let a residue. Pretty much this: http://pocketnow.com/android/diy-soft-touch-rubberized-nexus-s-backing except not the whole back of course.

Oh Man Sounds like someone is working at pfizers lol. If that is the case, The last time i was there for the same thing, epoxy wont work, I had to use a phone that didnt have a camera built in at all. I would double check just to be sure. would hate for you to do all this and then not be able to use it there anyway.

No, they won't allow a software change, but on the other hand, in fact it has to still work so that they can check that the camera can't see anything.
I don't want to physically remove the camera, as I've heard phone software can freak out when a camera isn't there, and it would be a lot easier if I can still go into the Camera app and show them that it doesn't work.

Guess again. This company does allow cameras that are permanently physically disabled. I've worked for them before. My plan is to sell the phone inside of the company at the end of the summer, already security approved, and put that towards an SGSII with another line's subsidy.
Pfizer is absurd, they are a private company doing private work and have no legitimate reason to block cameras. My employer does have very legitimate reasons.
why do u disable camera?
Usually secure sites wont even let you take devices with cameras in. You cant just say "Oh its disabled" and they allow the phone in. What about swapping sim cards to a difference device?
Private companys do this to prevent industrial espionage among other things.
But yeah this is a market the phone makers ignore. A galaxy s variant or droid with no camera would sell to the government/high tech sector.

They have a very good reason for it and the reason is dumb people. To be honest I wold be happy they are allowing you to have the phone. Like Foxwoods there are many reasons people have no need to have their phone while at work to begin with. Well I hope you find a way to kill it but juts be warned that if you do disable the camera on a perm basis you will drop the value of your phone by ALOT!
it's 6 screws on the back, open the usb port, then disconnect and remove the camera from the unit entirely without the use of a tool. Opening the phone is not difficult and you should just be careful and use the smallest cross-tip and flathead available
I would just get a cheap flip phone to use while at work and swap the SIM card from phone to phone. Then you don't have to mess up your cappy and can leave out in the car while at work. You could get a cheap used one on ebay for less than ten bucks.

This company's policy is that you have to demonstrate the camera is disabled. They used to not allow cameraphones, but they realized somewhere along the line that was a losing battle.
If they don't have a camera, they are not able to be certified for the Android market, so they can't sell one. Apple wouldn't do an iPhone because they are Apple, and that leaves RIM with the extremely boring Bold 9000. Yawn.

Yeah, the policy is a lot better than what they used to have, as there's not much out there with no camera. I understand why they do it, as it's a matter of national security, BUT pfizer is not an asset to national security, they are just a paranoid company apparently.
Foxwoods?
It's not worth that much anyways. I want to sell it within the company, so that would be a feature, not a drawback haha.

I already have three phones that are allowed to go to work. They are all POS phones. LG C1300, Nokia 2610, and Moto V557 (camera disabled). SIM swapping for the weekend is a PITA.

Hmm military huh well that slims it down. SOunds like EB to me. I know they have a contract with ATT like most of the Bases and what not in CT. ATT offers most high end smart phones without a camera for just this type of work. Had to order one when i started working for them myself. As for better ideas, I would ok the epoxy idea with security first as it should be ok but who knows. As for Pfizer being not a security issue, that I would have to disagree with. The Bio-Medical plant in New London is closely watched by the Gov for a reason.

Maaaaybe. The only thing they have to buy is the BB 9000. They may have somewhere that removes cameras and certifies them or something. I am going to check with security, but as far as I know now, the policy is the same as last year (what I described above). You make me want to be scared of Pfizer haha.
The epoxy is the best I can think of. Any better ideas?
I wonder if you could etch the lens with something like hydrofluoric acid from a glass etching kit?
(Disclaimer: I have not tried this and hydrofluoric acid is nasty, nasty ****.)

That may be the best one they have at the moment. I know ATT and HTC work closely together on it as most of the camera less models were all HTC. Had a tilt 2 without a camera lol. your epoxy might be your best shot.

I was not aware of this. Has google never heard of security? They are really dropping the ball here. Its not about paranoia. Just because something is not a matter of national security, doesn't mean you want photos of unreleased products leaking, etc.
To be constructive, since instructions to take the camera out of the phone have been posted. What about taking it out, spray painting it and reinstalling?
I'm thinking they won't accept that either... There's still audio recording. Also, the phone has the ability to act as a flash drive. Also, the phone can transfer documents over the cell network. Also, the phone can connect and run in promiscuous mode on a wifi network.
If they're truly concerned about security, those are risks. The camera is only one function.
I would find a hard care like the otter box commuter that has the camera hole cut out and its pretty deep. Then id put a piece of paper between the phone and the silicon inside the case. Put the hard case on and fill the whole with a epoxy/bondo. Once it dries just sand it down and respray the hard case with the phone out. No one will know.
Simply autobody lol.
I am going to a custom painting on my HTC Inspire housing and want to paint on the HTC logo on the back when im finished. Does any one have a stencil logo for HTC that I can paint on it or know of any place that sells cut-out stencils I could order to make it perfectly straight letters? I tried to google it and couldnt find what I am looking for. Any idea's?
I'm new here, but throwing out an idea for you to use. If you have a printer handy, or kinko's or some sort of printing place you can use that.
My idea was to just go to a search engine, type in "htc logo" (without quotes) and print out one of the pictures in grayscale onto a hard piece of paper to give you a better stencil-like canvas. Cut out the letters. Then you have a home-made stencil to use.
Be creative though, because creativity counts and everyone would love to see the what the phone will look like.
Good luck and have fun

Why don't you just make one? There's plenty of HTC logos on the internet.
Print one out the correct size on a laser printer, grab an xacto knife and a ruler, cut out the inside of the letters, crop to ~.5 - .75 in. surrounding rectangle, tape in place and paint away.

It goes well with White in my opinion.

My General Review;
First off lets get something straight here, The cases functionality compared to the HTC One M8 Dot View is some what limited.
Imagine David and Goliath... David being Dot View Case... Well you get some idea.
This is a niche product, that's for sure and at that price, I expect better from Samsung. I feel like they are slowly turning into Apple with their overpriced accessories.
HTC in my view priced the Dot View Case right for what it is.
I would like to have seen better quality material. Not the same that they are using on the normal flip wallet... ITs nearly £30 more then the Normal one and £15 more than the S-View Window.
On a bright side, It does have a nice feel to it regardless. Its not flimsy, it fits fine. It reacts as its supposed to and is great for telling when something is going on.
It has passive and active notification systems. When you get a phone call, it'll tell you. When you have a Facebook / Whatsapp etc, 4 little lights will move about every 20 seconds or so....
I think its great for the aesthetics. Nothing more. I wish I could have shown you how it works but for your benefit, I have included 2 videos.

I would Say 7/10. Its official, it works nicely. However for what it is, I would have wanted to pay less...

That is the general notification light for anything other than Calls, Emails or Messages using the stock Sammie Apps.
I have been using mine for about a week now and it's great. I have the Note 3 with S view and you can't really compare the two covers.
You buy the Led cover for only one reason: showing off. It's unique and cool and good looking, and for a product in this category you shouldn't expect to pay a fair price - of course it is over priced. Hell, here in Denmark I can buy some cheap windows phone for he same money I gave for the LED cover, and it's fine with me.
It would be awesome if some dev bothered to expand the funcionality of it though, like fx desplaying caller's name in one line etc. I really miss that and some other functionality from the S-view cover, but I will keep it on regardless because its cool.
my only problem with it: it doesn't cover the phone perfectly when closed (at least mine) even though its basically new and I didn's abuse it in any way. The flexible part of it is a bit too thin/soft and so it doesnt close perfectly and firmly and "swims" a bit, and I can only assume it will get worse with time. Anyways, my review of it is that it is a cool gadget with very low funcionality beyond the very basics, but very good wow effect.
