Why are apps like fpse bios are allowed to stay in the android market? - General Questions and Answers

I just had to say this. I came across an app in the market called fpse bios witch is the file you need in order to run playstation emulators bassicly the developer charges people a dollar for the app and all it does is search the internet for a download link to the bios file. witch is something even the average Joe can do. And if that isn't inferiating enough the developer makes you rate the app before you can even use it. Also I want to point out that bios files arnt even technically legal to have unless you already own a playstation. I'm sorry but this kind of stuff really grinds my ears because the developer is ripping people off and not refunding there money or responding to emails. Sorry for the ranting and raving but what do y'all think of this should apps like these be allowed to stay in the market?.
Sent from my de binged samsung continuum

That sucks, but you can rate the app again anytime.

It's the same with people on Ebay selling instructions on how to do something which can easily be found for free through google.

Release a free app that does the same thing. Do humanity a favor.

[Q] Applanet

So I see a bunch of folks around xda mentioning, even recommending applanet.
i`m certainly not opposed to free but I just cant figure out why they want permission to access to log in credentials when installing the app.
Would anyone smarter then me like to give their two cents on this?

hmmm. I don't remember it asking me for credentials....I got the apk and installed it, and it launched......maybe it used my stored credentials? hmmm. I did not give it too much thought as I have 2 google accounts. 1 for junk and another more serious. They could hack the junk one all they want.
Lemme clarify. When you install the app. The permissions page pops up telling you applanet wants (among other things) permission to access your account credentials.
Very few apps I have seen need this level of access.

Agreed ... baring in mind that there are apps on the Market that require really suspicious permissions as well, regardless of whether they are free or not. It's probably worse with APKTor, which is not designed towards secured downloads

You other guys aren't even reading what he's written
"The permissions page pops up telling you applanet wants (among other things) permission to access your account credentials"
As in - when you install an app from the market, it tells you what it's going to access on your phone and asks for your OK. He's asking why an app would want access to your credential information portion of the phone (as opposed to just SD Card Contents, etc). He hasn't said ANYTHING about trying to pirate apps!
BTW, I've never seen one ask for that.

By that you mean what? That people opposed to pirating apps shouldnt read threads by people that do?
Im also opposed to pirating. Yeah, if the app is free and you cant get it, then ask the dev for the apk, but knowingly taking a paid app without giving a donation or any recognition to the dev is wrong.
Just my opinion.

What I meant was. Why would someone with such high morals be on a site dedicated to circumventing software limitations imposed by others.
Having said that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and since the awkwardness of the apPlanet apk changed my mind about installing it I don't even see a need to continue those thread.
BTW. Some apps are ridiculously expensive and I still don't see a reason to pay upwards of $20 dollars to a group of investors just to find i still can't edit word documents.

There is a big difference in "circumventing software limitations imposed by others" on a device you have bought and own and blatant pirating of apps
So, everyone on xda has no morals? Im sorry, but thats a ridiculous statement. People on here mod free apps, or they will mod paid if you have proof youve paid for the app. No roms have paid apps in them unless theyre put in by mistake and then theyre taken out.
And yeah, there are ridiculously priced apps (navigation for £40 - £80) but people do buy them.

Applanet is a warez source - this site has a very strict policy *against* warez, which is probably why the "hacking" aspect of it is tolerated.
There's one other thread on XDA concerning Applanet and it got shutdown immediately.

That still doesn't make stealing an application right though does it? Don't forget that you have 24 hours from making your Market purchases to uninstall and get a refund if it doesn't suit your needs.
Regards,

I though this subject was not about pirating but more about why an app asks for some rights.
btw applanet is not only for pirating it also provides free apps unavailable on the market.
in addition it seems to not providing anything anymore the last past days....
There's supposedly a new release coming soon, and they're fixing the server end of it as well.
I think what it boils down to is if you're uncomfortable with the permissions an app is requesting, then don't install it. Better safe than sorry right?
Actually its only 15 mins to return the app. Still its better than ios

AppPlanet is a warez app.
We don't do warez here. XDA is about getting the most from your device, not about screwing people over.

A great number of users are complaining about the compatibility and running performance. Considering the bad ratings, I temporarily unpublished it. I am doing a rewrite of some of the core modules. Don't worry, N64oid will be back much better in 1-2 months.
Thanks for the understanding! I won't let people down
Ya people are retarded. Brand new app and they expect it to be flawless. Hate complainers. I actually did download I from a sharing site first but was impressed and decided to buy it. I don't think he was serious but the amazon app store is nice.
I don't blame him for doing this. People were all bent out of shape that it was $6 and he didn't have every rom working flawlessly. They rate bombed his app in the market.
The truth is that even if you only had 3 games working well, that should be worth your $6.
Oh well, now because everyone cried we can sit here with the app in it's current version, and wait 2 months for him to release a finished product instead of having something useable with updates all along the way.
Unrelated, but I just got a notice from google saying that one of my apps (a space invaders emulator) has been removed due to copyright infringement, even though it includes no roms.
I wonder why people complain about it about its sluggishness.
I mean, its not the developers fault that the people don't buy high-end phones.
They expect a 3D emulator to work on a 600mhz proccessor?
I mean, too many apps on ur phone also makes it slow.
Why bother leaving a low rating when its not the developers fault. The emulator runs flawlessly on the Evo, nexus s... (1 ghz+)

Dude are you seriously that cheap! Android apps are most of the time a dollar maybe two. The ones that are more are usually well worth it. Six dollars for something that lets you play N64 games anywhere you go is cheap, and you know you didn't pay for any of the 1000 games you have to play for it. Plus With the huge number of free apps, paying a dollar for the one out of every twenty apps is crazy cheap.
Sorry for the rant, but stealing a android app is like stealing from a guy with a morgage and a family vs a movie is coming out of a mega corporations pocket. Most of the Developers in the market and on here make all this awesome stuff because they like too, with the added side effect of making money. Support the developers so they will keep make cool stuff!

If they enter into the app development world, they've got to know/expect that people will pirate their apps. It's inevitable. If they get butthurt about it and stop updating their apps because of that, then they probably don't have what it takes to compete in this arena.
Having said that... I've paid for the apps that are on my phone.

Its not about the Money Money Money..

Well, he's just offering a service. I don't see why we should blame him. I'm the kind of hacker interested in tweaking my phone. I'm sure other people don't care.
In other field (cooking for example), I'm sure I'd be considered as a lazy bastard. I bet many people around here are in the exact same situation.
In economics, we call that preferences and we take those as data, we don't judge them. Let them be free.

The problem is he is making money off of work that is not his. This right here is the main reason developers are starting to keep things to themselfs and select freinds and not releasing it to the public.

This is pretty much the same as people paying to get their PSPs, DSes, PS3s, Xboxes or anything else, hacked/modified. He's not selling the mods and roms, he's just selling his service. I feel that it's okay.
This reminds me of people who sell instructions with rooting tools or xbox, wii, psp mod files that they have found online for free but this guy isn't actually selling the free software he made sure he mentioned you are buying his services which would be rooting and hooking up the phones for lazy asses who don't want to take the few extra minutes to google the stuff they need (which I think is half the fun; getting to know about my phone and seeing it do stuff that the manufacturer says can't be done...) but anyway it's their money if they want to pay for something that can be easily done I guess that's on them. BUT I would think better of the seller if these tools he is using were developed by him instead of using the tools that other developers had put alot of time and work into and the developers themselves give it away because that's what they love to do and aren't getting a dime for all of the work they've done and then the help they freely give when answering our questions over and over for people like him to turn around and profit off of their hard work that they aren't even profiting off of. It makes me so grateful that most people are not like this seller. He really is profiting off of other people's hard work that he got for free which is totally greedy and all of that kind of stuff.
Thank you to all of our devs who put alot of time into helping us make our phones beyond awsome!
I was thinking of sending him a message and ask him which rom and tools does he use or if would he use or a screenshot for a specific phone just to be nosy.

Yeah well it doesn't fly here. You use the work of others and charge for it and things happen. One should never steal a hackers work lol
And a great example of why some of the greatest mods are no longer posted publicly and only shared privately between trusted developers.
As far as I know, developers usually allow such uses. I'm sure they are well aware of the possibilties offered by their licences. I personnaly use a BSD licence for most of my programs and encourage those behaviors.

No I don't personally. There is a big difference. They are not using someone else hardworking that is given away for free. There are rules you agree to when you join the site. And that includes asking to use the work of others. And no developer will allow someone to make money off of a tool they give away for free
the ONLY way i could see what he is doing as ok is if he was donating a portion of the profits to the devs of the work he uses.

I know what it means. Been doing this for many years. You should learn what respect is. That is what developers deserve and it is not given when you steal their free software to charge for.
In the end this has been covered many times. If someone is charging for the work of others then report them and they will be banned from here. As for other sites just report them as these devices are released with free licences charging for them is illegal.

Apps/Games Market

Hi everyone,
Maybe its a dumb question but I was just wondering..
For example, the Final Fantasy III game on the Android Market costs ~17,70 USD and till now the game has over 50.000+ downloads.. - Does that means the Developer (in this case a team of developers) earned 885.000,00 USD from the game/app !?
Yes, unlike Crapple, Google gives developers 100% of their sales. There is a $25 fee to be a dev on Google Play.
But Square Enix is a pretty big company, they make the Kingdom Hearts games and Final Fantasys for PS3, XBOX 360, Wii.
They have to pay their employees and whatnot to keep their company running

For whatever reason apps with adverts get more downloads than pay only ones.
It may be because it is free, probably is, but ad funded applications might be better option.
If you pick apps similar to your own and look at ones with paid and also ad only versions you should notice the ad ones have more downloads.
It doesn't mean they make more money of course but it does mean that if you have an ad version you will reach people you otherwise wouldn't

Ideas for a 12 year old girl?

I have a 12 year old sister and she's not really "normal"
She's a bit slow in social terms and not much of a fast learner. Her father bought her a laptop for Christmas and I was really wanting to get her every Friday and just show her some tricks and tips and help her with her homework. Would be nice to influence her in some way because I believe she really needs it.
But I'm not much of a teacher when it comes to technology. I can do just about anything technically but I can't really explain even how to stop "Do you want this to be your default browser" popups to people who aren't so tech savvy.
What should I do? I've already showed her a YouTube series to watch for "Beginning with Windows 7" or something but she still doesn't really understand. I got it to where she can text me through Gmail but I still have to go up there a few times and click on my name because she doesn't understand how to open the chat window back up.
Any ideas? She doesn't really have a good computer. I couldn't even get those cheap "iSpy" games at Walmart to run stable. I plan to show her how to use Google and Wikipedia for school but what's something fun for a 12 year old girl? Besides Facebook. I doubt her Father would allow that.

Really? I never watch the news anymore. They dramatize serious subjects and it just ticks me off.
But yeah, I figured I could spend more time with her. She really has no one to really teach her anything, no offense to our parents. But she's getting to the age where I think she should consider taking things like education more seriously. I dropped out and getting into college was hell. My older Brother graduated but is nothing but a labor slave. Her Father and our Mother has their issues as well so she really has no role model. I think I should be more involved so if she does want to do something with her life, she doesn't have to go down the hard path like I have.

The minimum age for Facebook is 13 I thought so it may not be appropriate for her. And if by not "normal" you mean she's developmentally disabled her actual age she acts might even be younger than 12 and she would be vulnerable to predators on Facebook and other social media sites so be careful there. Opening her up to the world of the internet might not be a good call if you don't have appropriate parental guards in place on the pc she's using. Predators look for kids just like your sister, the most vulnerable are the easiest prey. I would at the least only let her on-line supervised by an adult and make sure she can't get on-line by herself.
And you can only teach her as much as you know. So the best bet is to learn more yourself and then you will be a better teacher. I have grown adults at work who have used pc's for at least the last 18 years and they still ask me do the simplest of tasks for them so she may never figure it all out. Turning it on and playing a game may be all she can do, hell that's all my boss can do.

I already did those steps before he gave it to her.

Does she have any interest in programming by some chance? Or the general concept of it (being able to tell computers what to do)?
Could try learning some Java/Android coding (for Android coding, probably want to learn some Java first). Seeing example code you written actually run might be pretty cool
What about voice recognition software like Dragon? It could be fun for her and also help her with technology?

Was actually thinking of that but I haven't really read anything about it besides commercials ? Does it "it just works" or is it complicated?
I think I could show her a few things. But I really don't know what she likes. She has like a billion pets but that doesn't really relate to teaching her how to use a computer.

I have no idea if it is complex or not, try their website... good luck with helping your sister.
12 year old boy.
Actually,I just remembered that Dragon comes with the new Swype keyboard on play store. You can get a free trial, if you like them buy the app and see if it's worth getting the desktop version?

Excuse me.. This is Nexus 4 general thread. Here you cant discuss or ask for help regarding grooming your siblings.
This thread is meant for general talk on NEXUS 4 and related to it.

Your right this is meant for the nexus 4, but as the op said he thought he was posting in xda general. I will ask a mod to move this to the appropriate forum.

I've moved this thread to the General Discussion area... If you have somewhere else in mind, simply press the report button in the OP and list where you would like it to be.
I meant to post in XDA General but since I have this app to default to my favorites and Nexus 4 General is all that's there, I reckon it bounced me back here when creating a topic.
I apologize, but yes this is intended for XDA General.
I was shopping around last night and this morning and I'm thinking of getting her a used iPod from GameStop to play games with and stuff. Really the issue is that she's growing up and everybody still babies her like her 10 year old sister. I think the laptop is the only thing she's really proud of as her room is piled with dolls and Barbie's. The iPod is only $80 and maybe a $20 iTunes gift card. I don't know what music she likes. She doesn't even know who Justin Bieber or One Direction is.
