Hello Guys
Why is Total Memory showing as 558MBs in task manager when it should be 768?
How come some HTC Sensations are 4G some 3G? + how do you check if its 4G or 3G?
Thanks
PS Love my phone
Some are locked by OS.

How do i unlock so that it use all the RAM?
You will not unlock the rest of the RAM memory beacause it's reserved for the Adreno chip.
i take it the Adreno chip is the graphics CHIP?

you should've bought the other device which has 1G ram..
Doesn't the iphone 4 have 512mb of ram? I don't hear anyone complaining there..

why do people complain about ram do they even know how android handles ram.as long as you have 100-170mb you are alright no program uses over 30mb along so,the most i seen is 23mb and im looking at it now and it is settings at 1 process and 0 sevices i have 278mb free ram used 242mb

iPhone users don't even know what RAM is..
@OP the RAM isn't gonna make much difference due to the way Android manages its memory. Besides even on EVO 3D you'll be unhappy with 700 some odd available RAM.
I've been having a lot of problems with not having enough ram, or at least I think that's the problem. My sensation keeps restarting sense, and usually when i check I only have about 70 - 80 available ram. i'm not sure what's using it, but it gets pretty annoying.

Minfree settings might be too aggressive. I haven't had sense restart once yet.

Minfree settings? Not too sure what you mean but for me, my phone is stock haven't modded it or anything. Just keeps restarting.

I temp-rooted my Sensation and disabled all of the bloatware, but aired on the side of caution with stuff I wasn't sure about, so there may still be a few things that could go. I also used Startup Auditor so that no unnecessary apps run at boot, but even then, there's some I'm not sure about so I let them be.
Running Sense with no lwp, on a fresh boot, the max memory I ever have available is >180mb, after using it for a few hours I'm normally running around 110mb. I don't really believe in using task killers, as everything I've read said Android handles it on its own and it only waste battery and more memory to kill the tasks.
As most know, when the phone begins to run low on resources, Sense will reboot. So quite often throughout the day, Sense reboots on me. This also happens almost every single time I play a game like Grow or Cut The Rope..
So how much memory do you guys typically have available on a fresh boot? After hours of usage? Any Sense reboots? Any tricks you use?
This should be interesting to hear what others are running at!

I haven't removed any bloatware yet. Max I've had has been 310 free. The one shown on "Running Services", not the Task killer included.

Nice one! I use System Panel and the incl Task Killer to see avail memory and they are always the same reading, right now 127 but within Running Services it shows 223mb available...I wonder why the difference.
I feel a little better now, but still wonder why Sense always reboots itself if I have that much memory available...

Haven't killed anything manually, ES File Explorer is running in the background, something is being synced over WIFI, 304 MB available.
By the way - this is on the updated version (1.35.00) and haven't checked the same scenario pre updating.
Updated version? Are s-off or outside the US?

About 296 mb free.

Wonder why the used and free combined come out to about 512. . . Don't we have 768?
Ps. This is in Running Services. Doesn't seem like it's anymore accurate than the window shade.
Nothing removed and running ADW since HTC doesn't know how to optimize there UI and I always have 302 available.

After using Eugene's 7/9 temp perma-root, I was able to get 397mb free. (Had 410mb before I launched drocap2)

Typically 110 MB. Today, after running Youtube/Browser and then closing them, I got 150. Dropped down to 140 again quickly however. Never had more... How do you guys get 300?! Disabled Sense?
I get around 290-305 free ram. I disabled alot of apps. System runs smooth. I'm actually running ADW EX and disabled com.HTC.launcher also. Is Checking Ram here in running services accurate?

Don't use the built-in task manager to check free ram. Use "running services".

I haven't frozen any bloatware apps either. They aren't really bothering me. Just wish I could use setCPU. I'm hovering around 400mb, but I also don't have a ton of apps.

Ok, in Running Services I get something around 260 MB.
No bloatware removed and I'm at around 300
No home replacement app either.

Max i had is 149 out of 558... I am so curious why the total is 558 instead of 768??? but i have never had sense rebooted even after couple of 720p mkv, playing games, web surfing...
About 340Mo after a fresh reboot and after manually killing all the unnecessary tasks (reader, tutorial, messaging, etc)
I've noticed that after about 48h of use, I can't get more than 240Mo after killing the same background tasks.
The worst I've seen was 70Mo after killing all tasks and 2 days of heavy use, it definitly needed a reboot ^^
Phone specs say we have 512MB RAM.
Elixir says I have 345MB.
Native Android "manage applications" (running apps tab) says I have around 300MB (adding up "used" and "free").
What gives? My phone's not rooted, so I'm guessing maybe a portion of the RAM is not visible to me as a user?
Isn't some Ram set aside for the gpu?

Yes. Parts of the RAM are dedicated for processing graphics. That's why it only shows 345MB.
So i just rooted the phone and installed the virtuous unity rom. When i installed the rom i assumed it would take care of the ram and cpu problems which is why i didn't really care much. But since it didn't solve the problem, i'm starting to wonder where the hell all the cpu and ram power is going. On idle i only have about 150mb of ram available and my cpu is 50% in use. Is this normal? Can anything be done about it?
It's also very noticeable.
Strange.
Are you controlling the running services and application-tasks manually ?
I usually have around 400MB free ram and cpu usage is just on the normal range, and an ordinary task manager does the job.

is your phone running slowly? 150Mb is loads or RAM, have you ever run out?
custom roms tend to make more use of RAM for caches and to improve performance etc....especially if you try sense 3.0 based rom which by nature will be larger.
How did you manage to get 400mb!?!?!?!?! What rom are you running?
It does lag quite a bit at times which seems to go away after the use of a task killer but i don't use task killers anymore as i failed to see the point in them.
also why does the phone claim to have 768mb when i can only see about 611mb. Is there some memory reserved for the os or something?

You can't get 400Mb that must be a typo! unless you've created a Senseless ROM.
Even when I kill ever process that runs using the the fast reboot market app I still get less than 350Mb!
I have over 400MB free, stock ROM, Settings take nearly 18MB, so my guess is about 418MB free. Based on stock app manager. I have lots of apps, 3G Watchdog running and five full home screens. I had very same situation on previous DS. How much do you have?

Used: 424MB
Free: 188MB

Sure not! Tried both roms and they work really FAST!
so the ram available is okay, but the 50% CPU is a problem i guess(i dont have a program to check that)
If you fell that your phone is slow even after wipe and flashing a new rom it might be a hardware issue.

That's the memory when i kill all unnecessary crap running.
With the needed apps running it varies let's say 350-380MB.

185 MB used and 405 MB free

Don't worry the games will be fine, Android will free up resources for processes that require it. And the status bar task manager(HTC) and settings show different amounts of RAM. In settings the value is significantly higher, seems a lot of apps are cached in RAM. Anyway you can still play those games and not worry.

Are you referring to internal memory or actual ram? If ram the sensation has qhd making sense use more ram. You can use supercharger v6 to change minfree values for more ram. And if you really mean internal mem, you can uninstall some apps or clear caches. Dhd and sensation have same amount of storage allocated to data partition.
Sent from my T-Mobile Sensation 4G using XDA App
On a completely clean install with noa pps installed you'll only get 250MB free RAM - you'll never see 450MB free with a Sense-based ROM. End of
It's not necessary. If the game needs more memory, Android will free up the memory for it when the game is running. Keeping 450MB memory free all the time is highly inefficient use of the available memory. That basically means that 450MB memory is kept from being used. People really should stop obsess with large "free memory" number on Android.

Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
well you might not get exactly 450mb free.
but i think in the developers forum, there is a custom rom you can port to your rooted phone that doesnt include the HTC sense and some apps to free up some space for you.
You deff won't get 450mb free even with an asop rom.
Like everyone else said, android does a pretty good job at memory management and clear memory when apps need more.
A lot of RAM is reserved for HW drivers first, then Android reserves some, an some processes are cached and then there's your free RAM which is less 300MB>Senny, but I use Supercharger MOD and get avg of 200MB on homescreen(w/ a lot widgets).
Got a question about RAM....
Why is it that on most sense roms the ram will never get bellow about 130mb? I've noticed that when you have the browser open, and open up a few more apps, most of the time the browser will close before you go back to it.
Why not put the apps you have just opened into the 130mb free ram, instead of the browser closing so that ram can be used?? It seems that the 130mb free is just being wasted, and never actually getting used.
There must be a reason for this... also is there a way to change this, so this free ram actually gets used?
Sense is using the RAM.

still, surely it should be going all the way down to 0mb?
OOM values (Out Of Memory) which are set in services.jar file make sure that the free RAM count does not go below 130mb so that the kernel does not panic on an out of memory situation, so whenever RAM is getting low, it closes apps that require a large amount of memory
To be honest its not a very efficient setup, it would be better just to put the value in kernel panic on out of memory = 0 (false) therefore solving the problem
