[Q] Will the Samsung Sidekick 4g work in India on 3g? - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

Hello all,
I'm planning to get a Samsung Sidekick 4g from the US and use it in India.
I'm having a doubt whether 3g would work in India.
Here's the info I collected.
Samsung Sidekick 4g - 3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100, HSDPA 2100
Airtel (Indian Service Provider) 3g Modem - Radio for 3G - HSDPA/UMTS 2100 MHz, receive diversity
http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
says...
India 3G 2100 BSNL / MTNL (Indian Service Providers)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UMTS_networks
says...
Airtel India 2100 Mhz
Some of the websites on the internet (http://www.google.com/support/forum...7d&hl=en&fid=3559be9dafc1e87d000482ea9e8003e2
http://blog.anands.net/2010/08/03/choosing-a-3g-phone-for-india
)
mention that only AT&T (3G 1900 Mhz) unlocked mobiles work in India and that T-Mobile unlocked mobiles do not work in India.
I'm in a lot of confusion as to whether the Sidekick would work on the 3g spectrum in India or not.
XDA is my final stop to get it clarified.
Please let me know.
Regards,
Sammy

could you finally get the answer to that question?
even I want the sidekick 4G badly
can I get some sort of a advice from you
Thank you Bro

Hi Chandrajit,
Samsung Sidekick 4g mobile is an awesome mobile. I bought it from US and unlocked it myself using the instructions posted in XDA forums. I love this mobile. The highlight is the sliding keypad and is unlike anything seen in any mobile before. Samsung Galaxy S specs are there and battery life is more than 1 day. It plays HD movies easily. Drawbacks are 3.2 mp camera and no flash. But these can be ignored actually.
Go for it. Let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Sammydude

hey sammydude,
1) for how much did you get the mobile in Rs
2) Does it work on 3G network now, which carrier
I stay in Mumbai, what about you

Hi Chandrajit,
I got it for 285$ on ebay.com. Came to 13.5 in INR.
Haven't checked 3g yet. Using with GPRS connection only.
Not worried about whether it will work on 3g or not. Because the phone is good in all other aspects! LED lights are superb and show missed calls, messages with different coloured lights. Jump keys to access fav apps. Spell Clock. Cool messaging app. Pleasing themes. I can go on and on!
I live in Hyderabad.
Regards,
sammydude

according to here http://worldtimezone.net/gsm.html
you have 900/1800 (not sure how correct that is)
more then likely though youll be able to access 2g, (thats all i have here in usa and it works fine for widgets and simple web browsing)
great phone though, specially after you get a Rom on it,
btw i paid 200USD or 10132 INR that was used though.

hey, thanks for the information you guys.
Now, the only one last thing I want to know is the audio quality through headphones
I couldn't get much info about the quality through bundled earphones & maybe ur experience with third party earphones/headphones
I plan to scrap my music player and carry all my music on this phone
so what is your verdict on the music quality?

mine never came with in headphones, (im assuming their not that great) i have used Sony MDR-XB700 and they sound pretty good, if you have voodoo control and turn up the amp they sound good(in comparison to my zune)

will internet work on it?
hey guys. i am fan of sidekick, i have used sidekick lx 2009 previously but the internet never worked for me. now i am thinking of buying 4g as the pprice is below 10k now.
so i want to know if the internet work of the people who have used it.
i am bangalore

Sidekick's 3G works fine in Russia, at 2100MHz. As you said above, "Airtel India 2100 Mhz" - look like it will be working for you too.

Sidekick uses AWS, i would stick with a att, as they use more common signals

T-Mobile 3g with Samsung Epix

I have a samsung EPIX I have done a lot of looking around all over I found that the epix supports 2100ghz HSDPA. So it should use T-Mobile 3g am I correct? I can not for the life of me figure out how to get it to work am I fighting a losing battle is it not possible? Am I missing something in the setup? I have had it for a few weeks and really love it. I would appreciate any help thanks.
John
hmm normally u have to goto connections setting and turn on HSDPA and reboot the device. it should auto connect using the 3G ,(depening on fone icons H mite show instead of 3G) as far as im aware HSDPA is great if using ur fone as a modem for laptops or desktop computers,
t-mobile uk supports upto 4.2mbs depending on area.
i'll try to look into this for u but u mite need to contact samsung as T-mobile only support soo much.
also HSDPA loves to drain the battery!
I called Tmob support and they said all I have to do is pop my sim card in and if the settings are correct it will work on 3G. They did not have any other info for me on my phone. I have no problem using EDGE network so I am assuming it is just in the phone. I do know now that my account is ready for 3G thats a plus YAY! I also did not see a place in setting to turn on HSDPA. Thanks for your help it is greatly appreciated.
This is from the samsung web site it shows it supports UMTS/HSDPA (850,1900, 2100MHz). I found a service menu code to set the phone to wcdma only, but i get no service when I force it to use wcdma. Wcdma is the band for 3g am I correct? I also found a code to let me lock the exact band I want to use but I do not see 2100 I do see a 2000 but 2000 still dose not alow me to get service.Am I missing something? Am I just fighting a losing battle?
well my friend, I have been having the same question stirr in my head for weeks now, because i got this phone like a month ago and i love it. i would prefer this phone over almost anything that is out right now. What i have found out so far is that this is a losing battle. our phone (epix) does support 2100ghz but it does NOT support the also equally as important uplink frequency. (1700ghz). this is the problem. Tmobile uses 1700ghz uplink and 2100ghz downlink. and as far as ive discovered the is absolutely no way to fix this. no radio rom dowload, and no adjustment to the radio reciever/transmiter that ive found. i also am willing to do just about anything to get 3G with this phone also because its a BEAST. this phone is very quick and has a TON of amazing features but theyre really not that great if you cant get the phone to work to the best of its abilities. anyway, hope that helped a little.
yep, must have both 1700mhz and 2100mhz radio for tmob 3G! Very few ppc devices have this off the wall 1700...
that is correct, you must have both the 1700 and 2100 bands supported. Not very have the 1700 unless they are branded as tmobile. I have a tilt 2 and the Epix both running on the TMO network and neither will ever be able to use 3G.

How hard would it to have the Inspire on TMobile?

What would need to be done to have it on tmo. And would hspa+ and all that work?

I actually rooted my Inspire, loaded the Euro DHD ROM and tried it on T-Mobile this morning. It worked, but no 3G, much less 4G.
So what would need to be done to get that type of thing to work fully? Something with the baseband or something right?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
It can't be done, the hardware is different, you won't get anything better that edge
i really need my inspire unlocked?
just wait a few months, the htc incredible S is supposed to coming to Tmobile and that device has same specs as the inspire except smaller screen and has FFC.
Unlock it and you're good to go! That is, if you don't care for 3G/4G
The Inspire's 3G radio is incompatible with the bands used by T-Mobile unfortunately
i want the big screen though lol. I have a g2 right now and I'm really just craving one of those huge screens. What about the Desire HD? would that work on TMO? or is there any other options out there?

your option is an hd2 on android
I don't get it. One of the reason I pick Inspire because it has the same 2G/3G band frequency like the Desire Z (G2). If Desire Z works then why not the Inspire?
Quote from GSMArena:
HTC Desire Z
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100, HSDPA 850 / 1900 - North America
HTC Inspire 4G
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 1900
Even the Incredible S is not 1700 band
HTC Incredible S
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100
The desire z looks like it does not work on t-mobile either. T-mobile needs 1700/2100 for 3g, which are not listed in the specs yet posted.
Can I use T-Mobile 3G devices on another carrier’s 3G networks?
You will not be able to roam with your T-Mobile 3G device on another carrier's 3G network. T-Mobile devices use the 1700Mhz/2100Mhz frequency band (for 3G) and it is specific to T-Mobile. You can however roam on another carrier's 1900Mhz frequency band using GSM. Likewise, another carrier’s 3G devices will not be able to roam on our 3G network.

yup basically, All you need to do is root the phone using either method. I tried it last night actually with my friends tmo sim. phone worked fine, except only edge service

But his question is specifically asking to use 3g on other carriers. Which the answer is no, even rooting won't help. It's a hardware limitation.
its something i have thought bout but why would you pay that much for a phone tht will only run on the Edge. Wait for the Pyramid to come out or get a Desire HD from ebay. its just the European version and has the bands ability. or like what has been mentioned before about the HD2 and load it with Android. Thats what Im using which is awesome becasue you can use the HSDPA speeds and 3G speeds and have that huge 4.3 inch display and still have a 1ghz snapdragon processor.. another awesome thing about it is that there is SOOO many roms you can load to customize your phone like if you wanted the basic Sense Rom like the inspire or the Evo there are plenty of roms for it, if yo wanted the MyTouch 4G rom then you can load it, if you wanted a Nexus Rom then you can load it, and its much faster with updates so you can even have Gingerbread already on your phone and they are even already gettting the bugs worked out of having Honeycomb on the good ole HD2. its overall a very under rated phone but thats because it had tons of issues with WinMo 6.5 but with ANdroid loaded on it I havent had problem one with it.. Im sure others have thier opinion but thats mine for it.. hopefully any info helps...

didn't you read the quote i replied too? i said nothing about being able to use 3g, infact, i said quite the opposite, i confirmed like others, 3g will not work. gotta love ppl who don't read what you actually posted.
Oh I missed the last statement of your post. It was tagged there at the end.
AT&T to Buy T-Mobile for $39 Billion USD
AT&T to Buy T-Mobile for $39 Billion USD
T-Mobile 3G (i think 4G also) Phones Will Require Replacement After AT&T Merger
SO buying this phone and unlocking it will give u a little while to use T-Mobiles services (maybe 2 years AT MOST) after that u will need an AT&T phone
but the trade off to being able to use T-Mobile for a while is that u will be at slower speeds for a while BEFORE AT&T destroys this grate service provider
can you say "Cingular" ?
so this is the best GSM phone as it will be merger proof !!
Internet settings?
hey guys i realize this is an older post but i rooted and unlocked my htc inspire and put in a Tmobile sim card and calls work fine and text messages too the phone automatically detected apn and everything but i cant get it to connect to the internet what should i do is there a way to set to 2g networks only? is that even required?
u will not get 3g on tmobile..ive tried

It looks like the Netherlands only has 900 and 1800 GSM frequencies available, and the Inspire is a quadband GSM phone (850, 900, 1800, 1900) It looks like the Netherlands only 3G frequency is 2100, so 3G won't happen. (http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html)
Here's a list of carriers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Mobile_phone_companies_of_the_Netherlands)
Yes i kno about the 3g mentioned that in OP. I kno the carriers too, I was looking for someone mayb from the region who could point me in the direction of a good deal.

Using ATT skyrocket in Taiwan

I tried search for answers, but no luck.
Story is that I just bought a Skyrocket and cant be happier, but I'm planning to go to Taiwan for a month. I just realized that Taiwan uses UMTS 2100 for 3G and HSPA. I'm getting a lot of different info on the ATT skyrockets.
I'm wondering if I can take this skyrocket to Taiwan and use their 3G/4G networks.
Any input would be helpful.
Best!
edit: I think it will work.
3G or 4G will both work in Taiwan. I was able to use my skyrocket to tether and make skype video calls with no problem.

Did you have to do anything (like switch APNs)? My previous phone (Touch Pro 2) had 2100, but I wasn't able to connect, even though my phone said "3G". My brother's Atrix had the same problem. We couldn't get any data working at all.
Hi, I live in Shanghai, and want to use China Unicom, which uses the 2100 network.
Sounds like from these posts that the Samsung Skyrocket will work here without any problems.
Does it need to be unlocked? Some Skyrocket specs list the 2100 while others don't. That due to ATT trying to discourage others from buying this phone?
Thanks for the info in this thread.

Using MT4GS in France?

Hi!
A friend of mine is in NYC tomorrow, and as there is no way to get the Doubleshot out of the US, he'll grab me a no-contract myTouch 4G Slide.
The question is: will i be able to use it on french networks? I'm not a specialist so i can't give you more info, but i'm sure some of you are All i know is that there are classes problems (UMTS class 1, 2, 3, 4...) sometimes. So is there a risk than 2G or 3G won't work?
A big thank you for any help you could bring.
Knowing who your carrier is would help.

Well, any carrier I'm on "Free mobile" for now, but that could change soon. I have no idea how to:
- check which bands are used by a carrier
- check weither the phone supports these bands.

You can easily google what 2G & 3G bands each carrier supports, but this page has the bands for the MT4GS.
Thank you for the link, it will be useful. However, i find it hard to get precise info about the bands used by the networks here: Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free Mobile.
Simple question: are they any band in the world that this phone does not cover anyway?

I just came back from Norway last month and the phone worked just fine. I had Roaming service with Telenor.
The phone has Band I so the normal 3G service will work up to 14.4 Mbps HSPA+ if your carrier supports it. If not it will be normal 7.2Mbps 3G service speed.

I'm using a MT4GS here in France.
It has a US T-Mobile SIM card.
It connects onto Orange network. Phone calls work great.
I didn't use data (quite expensive, I'm using Wi-Fi). So I have no input about that part.
If you are looking for a good phone with a physical keyboard - like the MT4GS - I'd try the Samsung Captivate Glide (only with AT&T - easy to unlock and root).
Great phone. Data (3G/3G+) works great here in France on Bouygues, Free, Orange.
In addition to that it packs a 4" screen and a Tegra 2 processor.
The best part is it has since a few days ICS !
I'm using the Glide here in France with French sim card. Works great. A lot more powerful than the MT4GS...
My 2 cents
Thank you forw these answers! Great pieces of info.
frav, you say the Samsung Captivate Glide is better, which i believe, but to be honest i'm a fan of Sense UI Also, the MT4GS has ICS too through custom roms. When you say "a lot more powerful" do you mean that much? Could you run Quandrant or something equivalent on both? Thank you
Is the MT4GS compatible with all 4G bands? I heard 4G is gonna be a mess about bands (using old 2G, and new frequencies...)
Thank you!
Back with 4G issue!
Hi again everyone. It's an old subject, but it comes under light today.
My carrier ("Free Mobile") opened today their 4G network. I'm in France (yes, still ).
In France, 2 bands are used: 800Mhz and 2600Mhz. Free Mobile only uses 2600Mhz, but that mau change in a near future.
My question is will i be able to get 4G on my MT4GS in France then?. I think not unfortunately, because it doesn't seem to support 800Mhz or 2600Mhz for 4G... but could you confirm?
Thank you

HSPA is only supported in the 1700mhz and 2100 mhz bands.
Free Mobile is rolling out LTE as 4G there is no chance that the MT4GS will be able to utilize that upgraded service. The freq is on 2600 mhz.
It appears their LTE network is in the early stages of roll out, you would likely have poor coverage anyway due to low numbers of towers in service. LTE on 2600 mhz would have poor building penetration and relatively short range due to the frequency being so high and that LTE needs a clean signal to noise ratio for decent reception.
To take advantage of the new service you will need a different device.

Hi,
Thank you for your clear answer.
I am working at 50m from a Free 4G antena, and living at 200m of another one, so i would enjoy a great 4G if it was compatible. But as i was afraid, it is not. Too bad
I'll get another device when any manufacturer starts doing really good Android high end phone with keyboard
Have a nice day!
