development editor from within android - Android General

is there an.editor or compiler that can edit or run android code from within android itself? I want.to test small code snippets without being on a windows machine. I want to edit and run it on.my android device

I don't think there is one.
It'd be good to have one btw...

I've seen some demand for this, but I don't understand it. I can pretty much type 50 WPM on a computer keyboard. Typing code on a phone would be a pain IMO Now, if you could use a portable USB or Bluetooth keyboard, count me in!!
The closest I can get is my Asus Eee netbook, my Droid X and a USB cable. It's very portable, Eclipse or Intellij runs fast enough. Just don't run emulator!!! LOL

This would be handy for developing on a tablet that is for sure. A good start would be a Android Java friendly code editor, at least you could tinker with the code and then try it out when you are back on a complier.
I imagine with a bit of scripting, there could be a way to remotely use a pc with Eclipse running to receive altered files, compile and return the apk.

check out touchqode

No, I think you misunderstood me. If I were to go to someplace, say a bookstore, I take my Asus Ee Netbook running Eclipse, my phone and USB cable. I code on the netbook, run the code on the phone.
It's an extremely compact and lightweight option for me.

So you can browse through some Android Development books while you code...very nice!

i find.the emulator too slow. Makes me wonder why the need for emulator. why not just code and run directly on the phone or tablet.

Never had a problem with emulator speed on MacBook Pro. I just like using the emulator to get the program going and then transfer to phone to check alignment stuff. I made note that I DO NOT run emulator on my netbook....now THAT is slow! LOL
Not to mention, I need the screen shots from the emulator for Google Market

Found this, supposedly has a working compiler and all that. I haven't had a chance to test it out myself. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=899911

Doesn't compile code but DroidEdit is a nice editor: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.aor.droidedit

App for writing code

Is there an app out there for writing code? Something similar to notepad++ would be pretty cool. I know there are ssh apps and basic note writing apps, but anything specifically for code writing? Thanks!

how about looking at the basic introduction to the android sdk and the eclipse plugin?
Sorry I wasn't very clear, I actually meant an app for writing code from on the device.. not necessarily code to be executed on the phone, but an app for writing code using the phone. I have a folding bluetooth keyboard with my dell streak, which makes typing very doable, so it would be cool if I could find an app to do that, though I haven't had much luck so far.. Thanks, Brian

CM6 includes vi.
Don't know about stock ROMs. Never ran one long enough to find out.
There are a few text editors on the market. EStrong File Explorer includes one that is on-par with plain-vanilla notepad.
Theoretically, you could port any pure-java IDE. But, performance is likely to be, shall we say, sketchy.
I remember using some decent pure-Java text editors several years ago. Might want to look into porting one of those if none of the Market editors is sufficient.

Rooted and bored

So, I get the Vibrant, root it in minutes, but now I'm bored. I have the basic stuff; WiFi tether, overclock, root explorer, etc.
Is there something more? What would you do to make it more fun?

Lol, use it. Check your email play some games. If modding is the fun part for you start working on getting skype on our phones. There are about 3 more levels of modding above you.
Try costumize your home screen by installing widgets
just sell your Android and go buy a new one
Get some apps you like. When I'm really bored I play Hamster Climb or read some books (kindle app or others).
I mean, basically the phone is a computer, so if you're probably going to feel about it like you do a compy.
If you like hacking on code, you could come up with your dream app and write it in java (which has to be easier than objective-c).
I guess it depends what you find interesting. The thrill of a new toy always wears off.

Try to install chrooted linux distribution (ubuntu or debian) on your android phone

EVO virtual desktop, similar to atrix... possible g2x port?

For those of you who have not seen this check out what has been done on the Evo!

This is the future IMO.
"Tablets" should just be an LCD touchscreen with no "guts" and you just plug your smartphone into it. Similar to the way the Atrix works with the keyboard dock (but with Android not desktop Linux). Except here, you don't need a "dock" just a monitor with an HDMI port and any bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
I think this really is the future. If I have a smartphone with a dual core processor, lots of RAM, flash storage, the Android OS, and a 3G/4G/WiFi connection, why do I need to repeat all that in the tablet? Just make the tablet an empty touchscreen and use the processing power, OS, and connectivity of the phone to run it.
I would really like to see this on the G2x

Grid 10

has anyone tried to convert the Grid 10 launcher to work with tablets/phones? I think it would be something new and fun to try.

+1 looks awesome. If I'm not mistaken though that's the playbook, probably wont ever be able to port though. While the playbook can run android apps, it in a virtual machine. Much like running windows in a box on Ubuntu. I hope I'm wrong though. I would love to run that.

That's not the playbook. Grid 10 was advertised as a new tablet "based on android" the fact they said based on android makes me wonder how much is android and how much isn't... It may be more than just a launcher. But I'm only familiar with the info prior to it's release

Why isn't it possible to run arm linux distros on android devices natively?

I thought the smart xda hackerz would figure some way out to modify the bootloaders to do so, or am i missing something?

I would just guess most devs just don't have the interest to do it... Ubuntu actually has started an initiative to get people to install it alongside android for using the phone docked as a pc, you can learn more about that by searching google for ''ubuntu for android'' and click the first link.

Drivers, android you're running is still using a lot of drivers which are closed source but otherwise available free to toss around in other android builds but this tossing doesn't work when you're throwing it in something completely different. Now there are quite a few reasons why this tossing doesn't work and some of which can be dependency on libs in android, ABI which governs how the program behaves, where the code resides and how the binary itself is structured and some more low level stuff like characteristics of stack etc... which are not the same in both android and some other more developed linux distros (ARM is trying to get rid of this ABI problem with their new ARM EABI).
It's like you have a plane which runs on various versions of jet fuel, but you can't run it on the gasoline you run your car on even though both are petroleum derivatives.
There are a couple of phones which did get working linux ports like HD2 running ubuntu, debian, slackware and hp touchpad running arch linux etc...
