According to the TMO Rep I spoke to anyway.
Rough timeline, just got my G2x warranty replaced, new one was fine except the GPS was horribly inaccurate (50 miles away) and it'd turn itself off with no warning. I'd have to pull the battery and when the phone came back on it had jumped from a 90% battery to 30%.
So I got on the phone with TMO, first rep was from India and insisted that I'd need to be charged a $20 fee, I put my foot down, got transferred to "Technical Services" which happened to be someone who spoke english. They agreed to waive the fee, did some troubleshooting and said it was a known issue with the G2x and the updated software for it to turn off like that.
As with most of the stuff you hear from TMO reps, take it with a grain of salt, but hopefully G2x #3 is the charm!
did you wait atleast 5 minutes?

Did the phone get really hot during that time that the battery drained so quickly? I used to get Sleep of Death with tons of heat on 2.2.2, but CM7 has fixed the issue. Unsure about OTA update, haven't run it.
Wait 5 minutes for the GPS? That didn't work, but if I'm going to wait 5 minutes when I need navigation I might as well buy a stand alone navigation unit!
I'm not sure if the phone got really hot, by the time I get to noticing it's been quiet for too long it is dead and cold.
After the update, did you factory reset at least once before loading apps?
My old G2X used to shutoff by itself, even with the 2.3.3 update. No matter what I did, it would always shut off by itself. I ended up exchanging it with another one.
It came in the mail with 2.2.2, so I upgraded it to 2.3.3, reset it, flashed the OTA root update, reset again, then loaded apps.

Hi i tried searching this entire forum for a thread on this but couldn't seem to find one. My problem is that my phone has been getting really hot lately towards the chin area (I know you guys are probably thinking, oh no not another hot chin area problem, but it's different, I think). The strange part is that it has been getting hot while I'm talking on the phone and the battery has been dying EXTREMELY fast, this is happening not only while charging but when on a full battery, because this morning I had a full charge and talked on the phone for about 15-20 minutes and I was already at 75%, which is really odd. So my question is if this is a battery problem or a hardware problem, which I hope is a battery problem because I'm sick and tired of getting a phone replacement, the one I have is my fourth replacement and I'm not looking forward to a fifth. Thank you
EDIT: okay for some reason I uninstalled that Lock 2.0 app, and it seems as though my battery life has gotten better, but not sure if it solved that call issue, will update again when I do.
EDIT EDIT: Alright I tested it through a phone call and it hasn't changed at all. I literally watched my battery level go from 32 to 21 in 6 minutes of a call and the battery temp went from 30 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees.
the only thing i can suggest is to get a new battery and see if that's whats causing it. if that doesn't help then, i'm afraid, it seems your phone's ****ed
ya i just called HTC and they are sending me a replacement battery as we speak, very good service. I ALSO called tmobile (surprisingly great service this time, after a billion others) and they have a g1 replacement for me as well but I will wait till i get the replacement battery first to see if its just the battery, if not then I guess I'm forced to get ANOTHER G1!

I was having very similar issues. I uninstalled Lock 2.0 and it since has stopped. Apparently that app running in the background sucks down the battery life.

semes to be happening on g1's ... mine died, then came back then died, then came back... now it cant stay on for more than 20 min...
and it started by it getting really really hot when talking... and i thought to my self.. hmm this is "normal" since this phone is known to get slightly hot... and i never had lock 2.0 installed.
i havent called htc , and tmobile would jsut laugh at me since im not even in the usa....
we could be looking at a "hardware issue" since i did an ebay search and found about 3 g1's that are dead due to the same heat/ powering off issue
i have my g2x rooted and running great the only problem is battery life i went from a full charge to 65 percent in about 2 and a half hrs! with just sending a few texts and chatting on skype for about 10 min, i called tmobile and here are my options i can wait till may 5th and they can just send me a battery or i can take it back and risk getting a defective one! I have never had any random reboots or freezing so far! except when i deleted some tmobile bloatware i got a couple fc's and had to restart then everything was fine! what should i do?
What processes are running in the background? Which task killer app are you running with what kill frequency?

why would you have to wait until may 5th for a replacement of a defective item. and it is defective if you do the right thing with it let it drain all the way than fully charge a couple times.
I have an up time off charger for 22 hours now some texting , some messing with phone a couple calls. and still at 67% intentially testing to see how it did. in mainly standby with minimal use. when i get my hdmi cord tommorow ill start pushing it . want to make sure it doesnt over heat or burn up like some report.
But by may 5th the 2 weeks will be up and if its something other than the battery it will be more difficult to get replaced. a year warrenty at least and if you have insurance with tmobile it covers everything that is a phone defect with no deductable(i was told) so just more of a pain.
keep doing what ever your doing run that puppy until it dies and recharge leave on for 2 hours after it says its charged and see if its any better. if not id look more into why you have to wait for may 5th to get a replacement.
After clearing all the crap off the phone, I left mine on most of the day. After eight hours comprised of about and hour talking, a fair mount of browsing the web, etc, and most of it with wifi calling active, I'm at 50%.
nothing really i use auto killer memory to close what ever i open
i have tried the drain the battery all the way down and they still didnt work! i tried the reset the phone as well i guess i will take it back, one question tho do i have to unroot and return the tmobile apps for them to take it back?

I would love to be able to get that kind of battery life lol...are you doing anything special for that?
I think the top part goes really fast and it will take a long time to get from 50% to 0. Also, it's just in the first few days I think it will act a little differently after a few charges.
edit: why are you guys using taskkillers or autokiller?

I was going to ask the same thing. Wouldn't this make the battery worse, if anything?
do i have to unroot and return the tmobile apps for them to take it back? please let me know
I'm also considering returning it but first I will wait for few days and see if it gets better. However I was wondering, what is tmobile's return policy for off contract phones? Is it true that you can return it anytime within a month?

Yes you do. Rooting voids any warranty you have on the device.
i was told 14 days buyers remorse period is what the tmobile said when i called today

That's correct but I would still imagine that rooting your phone could void this in the same way it voids any warranty.
Had the g2x since launch day, loved the speed, size, etc. Never had a single reboot (actually did once or twice while charging in the first few days), screen bleed and had fairly good battery life to boot with fairly heavy usage. What more can you ask for, right?
So fast forward to today...i was in the middle of typing a text and battery died, I was at 1%. So I plug it in, turn it on and then it got really hot and non stop rebooting only while on the charger. Taking it off the charger would stop the reboots, plug it in again reboot cycle again within minutes (no sound to warn me its rebooting, no start up animation).
Eventually when it was on the charger the battery icon looked really weird, it was completely white with 2 circular arrows in it, never seen that before, anyone know what that means.
After a while the phone cooled down and has now been charging for he last hour with no rebooting. I did call Tmo and they are sending me a new battery and handset.
I am unsure what to do, keep mine since it appears to be fine now or keep the replacement items. I am not rooted completely stock with minimal apps installed.
I really, really dont feel like setting up all my prefs again and reinstalling apps. One thing is for sure i am seriuosly considering the HTC sensation now. Had the MT4G before and it was great, so my perception of HTC is high.

The same thing happened to me this morning
Battery health status OVERHEAT
took off battery cover, i powered off through menu, powered back on through button
WHITE BATTERY REFRESH LOGO followed by media scan
Working as good as ever, and actually my battery life is a little better
Get a new battery asap. Yours is bad if it's overhearing during charge.

im kind of in the same boat as the op but not as bad on the overheating. how do i get a new battery? i bought from amazon and its past the return period.
My opinion of LG is really low. First the sd card slot died on my Optimus T and then numerous problems with my returned G2x. I hate to say it, but the grass is definitely greener on the HTC side right now. I will be checking out the sensation if permaroot happens.
yup, mine did the same thing. all was good for a month or so then boom my battery just freaked out. I wrestled with it a few days then last night it went from 100% - 0% in 6hrs while powered off. It's the battery. Get a new one.
Mine doesn't reboot...it just shuts off. Won't turn back on until I yank the battery. Only issue happens like once a day. But ill point out I'm now pissed Droid x gets gb Friday and I'm still using froyo...granted.by choice because I refuse to use a leak.

Not to change subject here but permaroot doesn't do much if the bootloader is locked. Gaining root doesn't mean custom roms or mods. You'll be able to use Titanium Backup but so what.
Also, back on topic. There are lots of reports that the batteries are bad and if it is over heating I'd definatly replace it.
Tmo sent me a replacement G2x after I thought I fried mine. I fixed it eventually by flashing several CWM recoveries. The replacement had nasty screen bleed. Needless-to-say I sent the replacement packing.
I was using my phone all day yesterday like usual I let my battery die all the way before charging again and today for some reason my battery is dying quickly.
Took off the charger at 6 am and it is now 11am and I have only 50% usually I have 70% or so. I hope my battery is not crapping out on me... I guess Ill find out in the next few days maybe this is just a fluke... I hope...

It is locked and HTC said this policy applies only moving forward. Which means future phones. There is no word about existing phones yet.

I am on my third G2x. From the day I received the last one(3 weeks ago) it has been rock solid(NO reboots-no screen freezes- no dropping data connections). Two days ago I bought a router and decided to use wifi in my home. Since hooking it up and running the G2X on it I find that I have reboots-screen freezes and oh yes data connection dropped (numerous times)I guess the wifi is just not meant for this phone. 3 weeks of happy usage and bam!! wifi in the house. I have also had apps changing settings without my doing so( never happened before wifi usage<) Also now the Gps is even worse than before.Been running it without the wifi and still getting the same issues now. Oh how I wish I had just stopped after the second one and asked for refund. This could (and probably will be eventually) a super super phone. I just don't know if I have the patience to wait . I just ordered an Asus Transformer which will be here on 5/31/11, maybe playing with it will soften my stance on how I view the G2x at this moment. Anyone else had the wifi situation?
I'm rooted with cwm. I have random freezes but it appears to only be random kernels. As well as only certain versions of android. Once the gb update comes out, I'm sure alot of our problems will clear up...

My Unrooted G2x had its first boot loop last night. I had bough the G2x directly from a Tmo store on April 20th. And two months later June 20th, i noticed my G2x rebooted and came up with “error checking”m or something like that. I put it back in my holster not thinking anything of it... a short time later, i realized my G2x was off an would not turn on. i put it on a charger and charged it for about a half an hour. When i tried to turn it on, it would not boot all the way. It got stuck at the LG logo and would keep rebooting. The only way to stop it was to do a battery pull. And every time i tried to turn it on, the same thing would happen. So i was forced to do a factory reset. Most of the other posts/threads i have seen that did this seemed to be rooted and have a non stock rom on it.
So my question is, would this be fixed in the update (yeah i know whenever that is) or should i ask for a replacement. Factory reset is such a pain. Putting everything back, recreating email signatures etc... And i am sure they will just give me a used G2x anyway. For the most part i had issues the first few weeks and mostly no other issues besides the battery life. Juice defener helps the battery life. And found fixes to my other issues. Well unless this keeps happening.
I was just wondering what others did,who had this experience. I was thinking of calling Tmo just so they have it on record that i complained about it, in case i need to replace it.
Thanks in advance for any advise offered--
Replace or wait until update???
What ROM and kernel were you running? Even if you are completely stock if it were a re-occurring issue we'd know about it by now. Bootlooping can be caused by many things and is possible on any ROM so I wouldnt count on the update preventing it from ever happening again. This kind of stuff is the reason using Titanium Backup is such a good idea. Schedule it to back up apps and data nightly so that if a crash does happen 99% of your settings, apps, and data can be restored with a few taps of the screen.
Keep it. Seriously its a computer in its own way and these things happen. Fix it and mmove on.
ITS ALL WONKY!!!
That's how it started for me a little over two weeks ago. Now it reboots too often, it won't end calls, it calls people like it's possessed, wifi won't stay connected, I'll have 4g in an area one day and no service in the exact same spot the next, overheat and gets hot enough to scare my daughter (one time thing), andmy battery has to be charged every four hours.
Tmobile said (3 reps in customer loyaltymind you) we can't do anything about it because it's a known issue.
I am very upset about this
And to make it worse, one rep asked me why I didn't return it under the remorse period. I told her this started after my remorse period ended. They won't even send me a new g2x. I'm gone from tmo (sadly there is nowhere to go)

Early last month, the phone went to the familiar black screen and wouldn't start. Based on past experiences, I let it run over night until the battery finished and then went to recovery and wiped cache. But the operation lasted close to one hour without any progress, so I restarted it. Still it wouldn't start, and I tried again to get to recovery mode, but this time there was no recovery mode. So it needed to be re-flashed, I thus thought, just as it did twice during the past year.
I was/am a long-term world traveller, and luckily I was in a city then. So I spent some efforts and found a repair shop and had the guy flash it. He seemed to have completed the flash but before I could fully login I got the black screen again on the spot. There was nothing we could do to get out of the black screen but to let the battery drain. So I paid him for the flash and went back to my apartment, and again let it run over night to drain the battery. The next morning when the battery was finished and I charged it up to about 30%, then I tried to start. But it only went to the Samsung logo without going forward. The recovery mode was back though, so I could switch it off. I was going to another city that day so I didn't have any chance to go back to the repair shop.
So about 10 days later when I reached another big city, I found another repair shop to get it flashed again. When I got there he did a couple normal starts, but when he was trying to go to recovery, the screen went to black again. So I had to take it back to my apartment waiting for the next morning.
The next morning I found an official Samsung repair centre in the city. So I went and left the phone there to get checked/fixed. The day after, I called and was told that it had problems in the main board. To replace it would cost about the same as buying a new phone.
Well that was very upsetting. I was/am not in the country where I bought the phone, so no warranty could I rely on.
The only thing I could try was to see if someone would buy it. So I went to a couple shops with the phone under black screen. One place offered me about $200 just for the screen. Well the phone costed me $600 just one year ago and it had been given excellent care throughout. Now just $200? But for a dead phone that sounded fine for me.
I bought it new. I never tempered it, nor had I given it heavy tasks. It was just to aide my travel: photos, maps, hotel booking, browsing the internet, and so on.
Had it been a good phone for me? I would say that the only thing I liked was the camera. Very good under low light.
But the GPS had been very slow. At times I had to wait for a minute to get my location under open sky.
The compass on the map was also very indecisive. Often times I got the opposite direction. So often I had to do the famous swing dance on the street to get it correctly.
The first big problem I had was the dark bands on the screen in about three months I got it. Samsung said the screen had to be replaced. But I was travelling in another country so no warranty would cover the replacement. I had to live with it. But luckily, after about a week, the screen came back normal.
Then after I got the long-awaited firmware upgrade it refused to start twice. I had to get it flashed. Imagine how much trouble that was for a world traveler. I couldn't flash it myself because I don't have a Windows computer!
Did I like the edge, or rather the no-edge? I probably would if I were an asura. But you see I need to hold a phone by hands. It just gave endless mistouches, and worries that it would slip off. A joke indeed for me.
Then the finger prints! All over the screen and the back. It just looked so dirty! Just as you would believe the phone is good at finger prints, the sensor was simply not very effective. Many times, enough failures required me to wait for a minute before retry.
The battery life was just so-so. It hardly lasted a day without me having to refrain from ordinary usage. So some would argue that it's got fast charging. But what can you do when you are outing for the whole day and relying on the GPS to go back? Ye, battery banks?
The WiFi reception was very poor. Often times when other phones worked well with WiFi, this phone complained about it. What was going on?
And the speed? Well it was not too slow, but for a top-of-the-line phone, it was just crawling. I never used it to play any games, but the response of launching and handling any app was simply not fast enough. Blame it on the multitudes of bloatware? I don't know.
And the random freeze and reboots? Although it did not happen as often as on a crappy phone, it happened quite a few times in the year.
And the renowned black screen of death, with or without the blue light on. Very scary. It happened also quite a few times. Initially it was worry and sleepless research. But then it made me an expert on how to deal with it.
And the long time or never for system or security updates?
So all in all, for my need of a reliable phone for serious use, I am happy it passed away.
Ok.
You were unlucky and got a defective one. I had to go to Sammy for having the same Black screen and constant freezes. They replaced the board with a New one that was made in march this year. The phone has been perfect ever since. I get usually almost 2 days of battery from it and flawless speed.
What i learned is that a low percentage of People that bought the phone in the day one had defective boards were the soc had problems.
But i get your frustration about the problems you had. I had the same toughts but decided to take a chance in trying to get it repaired.
Really bad luck on defective phone and/or most likely from the first batch... all the phones got a lot of those at first.
On the side note, why the phone is not under warranty if you didn't root it? Isn't the warranty 2 years and shouldn't they repair it charge free?
I don't mean to sound rude. But someone paid 200 dollars for a phone which you say was defective. He did this not for the screen but because 100% this was a software issue and not hardware. If you spent all the effort going to 2 repair shops you could have spent half the time flashing your carriers firmware from Sam mobile or even a custom rom on your own.
Im not trying to be rude but the S7E is an extremely powerful tool. There aren't any moving parts. The phone was fixable.
