Thank god for otterbox (saved my phone from the toilet) - Verizon Droid Charge

So I took my barely-a-week-old phone and dropped it in the toilet. Not on purpose. It's funny how you hear these phone-in-a-toilet stories and wonder how the hell they happen - then it happens to you and and you're just like... "ohhhh."
Anyway, I have the Otterbox commuter on it. Not the ruggedized one, and not even water resistant. Thank god I did, because the little plug on the headphone jack, the rubber over the hard keys, etc probably saved my ass. The water indicators under the battery cover barely got moist - pretty sure they got wetter while I was pulling off the dripping cover than when it was under water. They're still pink, just a tad faded. Otterbox FTW!!!
No, they didn't pay me to say this. It's just an awesome case. Pricey? Maybe. Bulky? Oh yeah. But QUALITY and a life saver.

I also caved in and bought the otterbox commuter and I freaking love it! It honestly isn't as bulky as I thought it would be but I do wish the back was a little more slip resistant. Over all I think this is a great case though.

I have one too, I don't know why you guys are talking like they're so expensive. I got mine for $22 on amazon. The otterbox is amazing though!

Rule #1 No cell phones in the bathroom.
Rule #2 No cell phones around the kitchen sink
Consumers would save billions of pesos every year by following those two simple rules. Glad you saved your phone! If this would have happened to me, I would have peed my pants (pun intended).

What do you mean? How do you pass the time when dropping the kids off at the pool? When do you play Angry Birds?

Really, you play angry birds while on the toilet? That is almost new thread worthy!

also, this has worked for me in the past. pop the battery out, asap, and put your phone in a large zip lock bag over night.
I would do it any how with the bag of rice, the rice will suck all the moisture out of the phone.

Wish they had one with a kickstand, i would consider it

No, rice will absorb water that it is in contact with, and water that has evaporated in the bag.
Pools of water, say from recovery from the bottom of a pool after a few mins, might require more evaporation and more replacement of the rice. But this is the general idea since the rice is a desiccant.

If it gets wet just buy the 530 msrp or so of the charge in beef jerky, throw all the little silca beads in a bag with it and let it sit an hour =p

Nearly had a heart attack

So here i am, getting my phone. IT's fairly hot...of noes another SOD. I'm walking, take it out of the case. Take off the battery cover....and it slips. Im around 5 11 , and was holding it at chest height when it fell. No joke, it was like time stopped. I saw it fall slowly, without any protection
It hit the ground...and the battery flew out (obviously). I was scared even though the screen didnt crack. because the flipping Camera hit the ground first since it popped out!
At first, it wouldn't read the battery, and showed a question mark. A quick battery remove and insert fixed that.
It works fine, but after that momment, im scared to drop. Can't bear to see my baby damaged
Just wanted to share a story.
BTW: how durable are these phones? If it was my old iphone,.......uhh wouldnt have been so good. The plastic hasnt even been dented
BTW arethese hings like bulletproof. It's
The odds of a phone surviving being dropped is so variable that it is unpredictable except for obviously disastrous circumstances. Wear textured rubber gloves to reduce the potential of dropping it.
I remember when I dropped mine about 5 feet face down on asphalt/concrete whatever it was and I was so mad that I walked away. Didn't bother to even look if it was cracked because I thought it was done. I ended up picking it up and it was pefect. No scratches on the screen only on metal sidings.

I dropped mine out of my lap onto a gravel driveway while getting out of the car. Screen shattered into a spider web. Wasn't very far down. Glad I have insurance. I agree that this phone is underated.

I've heard peolpe dropped theirs 3 feet and it breaks. Personally I dropped mine off a 15 foot ladder at work and it landed on sharply corrugated metal flooring face first. Heart skipped a beat, I went and pick it up and nothing at all happened No scratches, nothing. But then again, Gorilla glass is made to not scratch from metal so drop it on concrete and I wouldn't be to sure.
Ive dropped mine a few times, and in my case, the corners are pretty easily dented, like soft plastic.

Has anyone tried either? And by trying, I mean has anyone submerged their phone with these treatments.?

I wouldn't try it. Every time you remove the batter cover, you'll have to reapply. If you keep your phone in your pocket, who knows when that stuff will wear off the phone. Just look for a water proof case, if your afraid of getting your phone wet.

This is isn't true for Liquipel. Their technology works a bit different in the fact that they ionize the phone in a vacuum with the chemical they use for waterproofing by releasing the chemical then release the vacuum so it bonds itself to every nook and cranny the phone has, making a waterproof bond at (I believe as far as) the atomic level. Very interesting technology... Though, it does NOT make the phone capable of just being completely submerged into water without being affected. They still recommend letting the phone dry out if it is submerged, but the water itself won't affect much. Hence they're "worry free" motto.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... I was just curious to see if anyone had any personal experience with the products?
It's not like I'm particularly worried about my phone getting wet, but over the years I have spilled water/drinks on various phones. Fortunately, I've never had one suffer any kind of permanent damage.
Also I'm not too keen on stuffing a phone that has it's thinness as one of it's features into a bulky case.

I personally haven't, no, but people have been raving about liquipel since CES saying it's the best behind actually getting a waterproof case.
I also contacted them a few weeks back wondering if they will liquipel Skyrockets even though they're not on their phone list and they said they will. All you have to do is select a phone on the list and state that you're knowingly sending a different phone in the notes. I'm tempted to get it done, but I need to wait until I have a SR that isn't so jacked up with these screen lines.. Haha

Used otterbox defender before and it is very water resistant but no means water proof.
I have used it during heavy rain without setting the watermark-void my warranty trigger. Even with a waterproof cover not sure I would take it 3ft below sea level snorkeling.
But maybe liguipel and an otterbox commuter would be a lighter alternative

You guys need to check out lifeproof. Much better case, its waterproof; not water resistant like liquipel and aridion or p2i or hzo. This is the ONLY way to protect your phone from the elements.
demonstration at the beach for more information.
We resell these cases to small dealers @ $60.00. They retail at best buy for $79.99. We retail for $74.99 + shipping. 305.349.3678.

Leo Laporte had his iphone liquipelled. Maybe another brand, but search for it on twitv. He dunked his phone and it was done for. Granted he said he didn't wait the 2days of drying like they recommend. I think those 2 days could be important, but not sure if it's worth the cost regardless.

A couple months ago I dropped mine in water for a few seconds with a regular case and rebooted it a couple times before taking out the battery, then blow dried it immediately for a while on high heat and left it out for 8 hours before putting battery back in, then used it the whole day and it still works perfectly haha
I was wondering if this is really "long lasting", ....I remember there was nano coating for cars and it disappears after a while.
I believe that it works but does it work one year after ..or two?
They promise (liquipel) a lifetime more then the gadget itself, but this I don´t believe.
I found some other stuff, regarding making electronics water proof, a german engineering company liqui-tech.de
they recommend liquipel but offer something similar, but to protect the gadget you have to disassemble. Not easy to get it back assembled .
But much cheaper, a can for 14€
A zip lock baggie and you're good to go! Cheap too

Broke my s3 yesterday...

Damn thing fell from my pocket, landed on its side and broke the LCD. The glass screen is fine, and everything works, boots up okay, just the LCD. Usually I keep my phone in an otter box. The otter box protected the s3 when it slid off the seat and flew out of my jeep on the freeway and bounced across the concrete at 55mph. I didn't think about putting it back in its case when I went down to clean the shop with the misses and the damn thing met its maker from 4' off the concrete.
Insurance is sending another one and I'm out $100 but the worst part is I have to use my wife's old Samsung fascinate like some kind of ****ing Neanderthal. Ugh...

It was still in the middle of the road.
No top, no doors on the heep. Sweeping left hand turn. Thing was sitting on the passenger seat, plugged in to the stereo. I went around the turn, saw it start to slip, reached down to grab it, ended up grabbing the cord and the cord popped out. Out the side she went!
I watched in horror in the rear view mirror the tumbles, flips, etc that the phone took. It was in the otterbox, in its holster as well when it hit the pavement. In the mirror, I watched it come apart in pieces. My heart sunk... That was it I thought.
I pulled off the road, and walked back. It was ~6am on a Saturday, I was on my way out to the bush to go hunt. The first piece was the clip to the holster... Then the holster... Then the phone itself lying face down. Ughhh
The rubber cover was peeled back from the phone. The hard plastic holster was mangled from hitting the pavement so many times. The rubber outside of the otterbox was pretty well scraped up too. I had to use my thumbnail to remove chunks of rocks from the rubber.
I could imagine the phone surviving that and didn't want to hit the button to unlock it. I walked all the way back to the heep before deciding to try it. I hit the home button and sure as ****, screen came on. Everything worked! There was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Honestly, I was shocked. I just watched this thing tumble, flip, roll, bounce over and over again, and it still works?
I went about my day, came home, told the story to my better half. She was shocked. We weren't sure about spending the money on the otterbox in the first place. The next day, I called otterbox and told them the story, just like I'm telling you. I also sent them an email with the pictures of the mangled holster, the scrapes on the soft rubber shell and the scratch in the screen cover. You know what she told me?
"Your otterbox is under warranty. I'd like to send you a new one. Would you like a different color this time?"
You've got to be ****ing kidding me.
They shipped me out a brand new, white otterbox to replace my scratched fell out the door of the heep on the freeway at 55mph cause I'm a moron black case. I didn't know anyone did business like that anymore.
So here I have two otter boxes. One mangled, but still functional. One brand new in their glacier color. The old mangled black one gets used for hunting and fishing, down in the shop when I'm working. The white one gets used when we go to town or anytime the phone won't be in harms way.
I'd been having a charging problem lately. ****in thing won't charge for ****. On a fresh battery pull, it'll charge no problem but any time on the battery and you plug it in, it's super slow. There's no wake lock or anything keeping the CPUs high according to bbs so I'm not sure what the issue is. I had just pulled the battery when the misses and I decided to go down and clean the shop.
First thing I pick up. Pulls down the front pocket of my jacket where the phone is sitting and.. You know the rest.
Tap'd
Sorry to hear that. Mine never comes out the otterbox. ...ever... best money I have ever spent

I tripped coming up my front steps and my S3 flew out of the breast pocket of my shirt. Corner of the phone hit my concrete stoop and it did a flip or two before ending up face down.
It bent the corner of the metal case a little and it has a few scrapes but otherwise it's fine. Nothing but an Invisible Shield on the screen. And that's all it'll ever have on it. Can't stand the bulk of cases like that.

One hell of a steal! I've heard bad things about those tho. Like there is a gap between the two pieces meaning it could more easily come apart if dropped thus allowing water or anything to intrude the case coming into contact with the device. Other than that it would have been my second choice but that was a deal breaker for me.

tried it for the 1st time yesterday for the Spartan Beast in temecula! yes there is a gap when u try to close it. but taking the back cover off ur phone fixes this. i was really iffy about using the case. as i never tested it. took the back case off. used the atlas case and it seals completely. used it the whole race through mud water and the swamp. stayed dry the whole time. quite happy with it. + it has a small part on the case u can put a lanyard!
about people mentioning the sound being drowned or anything because of the case seal. watching my videos it doesnt seem that much. my voice is clear and so are the people around me. havnt tried it for voicecall yet.

Wth, yeah i guess i wouldn't be either xD Great job man! I'm always looking for cheap cases, had to pay the full price for my LifeProof for the Galaxy S5 cause eBay and other places had about the same price, plus that way i don't need to worry if i ever have a warranty claim.

OMG!!! I ran my V10 over with Tahoe.

So I was cleaning my rims on my Chevy Tahoe and I had the phone sitting on top the tire listening to Spotify and I was told to move my truck so I moved the bucket and stool I was sitting on but forgot my phone.. ? I drove forward and my dad screamed "STOP" then he said "add 300 to whatever you have to pay for since you just ran over your phone with both wheels" he then picked it up and held it out and said "I'll be damned it's fine." I grabbed it and dusted it off and looked at it amazed.. Not a mark... To be fair it did have a case a Versus High Pro Shield case but damn Im still pretty impressed. 99 Tahoe LT 4 door with 22's. 5500 lbs.. ??
BeameD From My LG V10... The one with the ALWAYS ON SCREEN... Watching me.. ?
It's suppose to be built strong, but drop in on a pillow and it will shatter... LoL That is the way it seems...

yup that sounds about right lol hard core its ok, soft drop your f#$%'ed lol
Any chance you can link to the case? I'd also like car running over your phone protection lol.
That's how I got my V10...Lol. But my experience was not as good. Note 3, otterbox, and a double axle utility trailer with 4 tons of decorative landscape boulders...
Zdeuce2 now with golden rays of sunshine
Two days ago I dropped it accidentally on a hard ground, the drop was scary, surprisingly the V10 survived without even a scratch on the metal rim, and one day before that I removed the protective case but also it has tempered glass on the screen
This crazy girl I was talking to decided to take my v10 and throw it across her garage. (No case and brand new at the time) I went to pick it up just knowing it was cracked, nope. Minor scratches on the screen and some edge scratches but you do that to an iPhone and it's over. I was still pretty mad that someone would even do that though.
