Broke my s3 yesterday... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Damn thing fell from my pocket, landed on its side and broke the LCD. The glass screen is fine, and everything works, boots up okay, just the LCD. Usually I keep my phone in an otter box. The otter box protected the s3 when it slid off the seat and flew out of my jeep on the freeway and bounced across the concrete at 55mph. I didn't think about putting it back in its case when I went down to clean the shop with the misses and the damn thing met its maker from 4' off the concrete.
Insurance is sending another one and I'm out $100 but the worst part is I have to use my wife's old Samsung fascinate like some kind of ****ing Neanderthal. Ugh...

Nooooooo! Another one bites the dust.

That first story is crazy lol. I can imagine a phone surviving a fall like that , but how the heck do you find the phone after falling on the freeway?

It was still in the middle of the road.
No top, no doors on the heep. Sweeping left hand turn. Thing was sitting on the passenger seat, plugged in to the stereo. I went around the turn, saw it start to slip, reached down to grab it, ended up grabbing the cord and the cord popped out. Out the side she went!
I watched in horror in the rear view mirror the tumbles, flips, etc that the phone took. It was in the otterbox, in its holster as well when it hit the pavement. In the mirror, I watched it come apart in pieces. My heart sunk... That was it I thought.
I pulled off the road, and walked back. It was ~6am on a Saturday, I was on my way out to the bush to go hunt. The first piece was the clip to the holster... Then the holster... Then the phone itself lying face down. Ughhh
The rubber cover was peeled back from the phone. The hard plastic holster was mangled from hitting the pavement so many times. The rubber outside of the otterbox was pretty well scraped up too. I had to use my thumbnail to remove chunks of rocks from the rubber.
I could imagine the phone surviving that and didn't want to hit the button to unlock it. I walked all the way back to the heep before deciding to try it. I hit the home button and sure as ****, screen came on. Everything worked! There was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Honestly, I was shocked. I just watched this thing tumble, flip, roll, bounce over and over again, and it still works?
I went about my day, came home, told the story to my better half. She was shocked. We weren't sure about spending the money on the otterbox in the first place. The next day, I called otterbox and told them the story, just like I'm telling you. I also sent them an email with the pictures of the mangled holster, the scrapes on the soft rubber shell and the scratch in the screen cover. You know what she told me?
"Your otterbox is under warranty. I'd like to send you a new one. Would you like a different color this time?"
You've got to be ****ing kidding me.
They shipped me out a brand new, white otterbox to replace my scratched fell out the door of the heep on the freeway at 55mph cause I'm a moron black case. I didn't know anyone did business like that anymore.
So here I have two otter boxes. One mangled, but still functional. One brand new in their glacier color. The old mangled black one gets used for hunting and fishing, down in the shop when I'm working. The white one gets used when we go to town or anytime the phone won't be in harms way.
I'd been having a charging problem lately. ****in thing won't charge for ****. On a fresh battery pull, it'll charge no problem but any time on the battery and you plug it in, it's super slow. There's no wake lock or anything keeping the CPUs high according to bbs so I'm not sure what the issue is. I had just pulled the battery when the misses and I decided to go down and clean the shop.
First thing I pick up. Pulls down the front pocket of my jacket where the phone is sitting and.. You know the rest.

Sorry to hear that. Mine never comes out the otterbox. ...ever... best money I have ever spent

Which Otterbox did you have? Sounds like the defender since you mentioned the clip, but I'm just curious as I have the commuter. I haven't anything to really test out its capabilities yet.

Thanks for sharing that rather unique story.
Perhaps you might consider some sort of automobile mount for the phone, since you mentioned driving a car with no doors? No sense tempting fate again, I figure.

I tripped coming up my front steps and my S3 flew out of the breast pocket of my shirt. Corner of the phone hit my concrete stoop and it did a flip or two before ending up face down.
It bent the corner of the metal case a little and it has a few scrapes but otherwise it's fine. Nothing but an Invisible Shield on the screen. And that's all it'll ever have on it. Can't stand the bulk of cases like that.

I read some comments that an Arkon mobile mount for the Galaxy Note can accommodate a Galaxy S III in the Defender case. The nice iBolt mount can only handle a GS3 with the Commuter case.

OtterBox saved my phone

Today before my baseball game, my whole team was sitting in the stands. The bleachers were like the 4x2 wood bleachers with tons of cracks and holes. Anyways, I was at the top, and set my phone down. A foul ball was hit right back at us and everyone jumped and my phone sadly fell through the crack. I saw it fall all the way to the concrete ground. It was at least a good 30 feet up in the air. When I ran down to get it, I expected a cracked screen or a broken phone, but all I saw was a small scratch on the otterbox case
I am now convinced that this is the best case out there!
Congrats on your phone surviving! I'm assuming you have Otterbox Defender? That's all I use. Sometimes the added bulk and weight are a drag, but stories like yours always remind me that it's worth it.

haha idk i actually got it from craigslist and it came with the phone
i think its called an otterbox commuter
My Commuter saved my Inspire too, there's a thread about it somewhere down there. Glad to hear stories like these
I actually ordered a Casemate Tough today because I want to have two to switch between and I'm a little tired of the Commuter's lint magnet corners and slippery back. Great case overall, though.
Sent from a telegraph station somewhere in northern Russia
Glad to hear it saved your phone. I chose the commuter over the defender because it is not as bulky. It seems safe but it is good to hear it has worked for someone.
mine has saved my phone a few times
I wouldn't get the Defender for a Lent Free experience.
The Commuter has less of the rubber lent magnet exposed then the Defender, seeing as how the Defender is completely wrapped in that lent magnet
I went with a Seido case for my Inspire due to the less lent magnet body. Can't report on durability due to no accidents .. however I can say that it feels VERY solid.
I really can't stand the lent magnet either. It smells fishy. Also it only comes around part of the year. I tried using the lent magnet before and it was Ashes by wednesday Next try will be in my Palm Sunday. Maybe I will just make a lent promise not to use my phone. Who am I kidding?
I dropped my Otterboxed Tilt 2 on a concrete garage floor, and at the grocery store with nary a scratch or damage of any kind. Otterbox... Good cracker!

While cycling I pulled my phone out to change the track and hit a bump in the concrete, the phone went up in the air, caught the front tire and shot out like it was sent from a pitching machine!
10-20 feet down the road, the phone is fine and the case has a small chip in the top corner. Otterbox Commuter saved my phone as well!
My Otterbox Commuter sadly is no more. It did its job and protected my phone, but the hard plastic outer shell cracked in two. Got caught in the spinning blades of a fan I was working on at the shop, got slung across the room and smacked into the wall. So no complaints here. I decided I would go bigger and got the Defender this time around.

I think I may have the only otterbox defender failure story. lol. I was on vacation with a few of my buddies to Myrtle Beach and we had arrived there earlier that day. So we decide to celebrate, as normal people would, and I had a few nice beverages and sat my phone in my lap on the outside balcony. I stood up, forgetting all about my phone, and watched it skid across and plumet to its doom. after falling 11 stories, It smashed the corner and shattered my screen and then proceeded to bounce into the bottom of the 13 foot deep pool. I still miss my droid Incredible to this day!

Otterbox Commuter saved my phone too! I install cameras for rider photo's on roller coasters around USA, Canada and Mexico. I was in Cedar Point OH working on Dragster when I dropped my phone from a 25ft ladder. It hit the 6th step and bounced about 10ft away. The only damage was a crack where the power button is (the thin piece of plastic than goes around the rubber nipple).
Good case =]
My pocket was free and has always kept my expensive smart phone from falling off bleachers.

Skullcandy case REVIEW

Hey guys,
So i had the chance to review this case, and I can say it does the trick! it is a very nice , thin one piece that gives enough protection for your phone. I really dont know why glossy!! a matte finish would ve been dope!

I wanted to get a different case after I purchased this phone, but because I needed a case ASAP, I got the white skullcandy case from TMO.
Although I have been ultra careful with this phone, I have one story that lends itself well to an assessment of the durability/protectiveness of this case.
I was riding my bike on the street and there wasn't any traffic at the time and was bored, so I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone and with one hand turned on the video recorder and started shooting the moving scenery all around me. I was steering the bike with the other hand and had moved to riding on the sidewalk when suddenly a girl came off her front walk and was right in front of me.
So as to not hit her straight on, I reflexively pulled my hand holding the phone down to the handlebars and veered around her. Unfortunately, I was not able to juggle this and the phone and the phone fell from about 5' straight down into sidewalk cement while also having a good deal of forward momentum.
The phone slapped the cement and then tumbled a good 6' more on the sidewalk. While sputtering a series of profanity, I jumped off the bike and went to pick up the phone fearing the worst.
To my pleasant surprise, the phone was on perfect shape. The case has some scratches, and the chrome paint on the sides were nicked up a bit, but that was it. When I got home I took the phone out of the car and looked again. It was perfect. The glass face had not been scratched (I have a screen protector) and the body was fine. Also, the phone was perfectly functional.
So I have to give credit to the skullcandy case for this frightening experience. After hearing how easily iPhone 4S phones had shattered front faces after they were dropped from about 4' (this was about a year ago), I thought I had a casualty on my hands.

Galaxy S4 Active dropped on concrete - how rugged is it? (pics)

Well, I dropped my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active onto a concrete sidewalk. I am not as careful as I should be since I would drop my SII without worry since I had the Ballistics case on it. My new Active had no case. It fell directly on a corner, and of course missed the hardened rubber/plastic part and hit the outer metal shell directly. It knocked a snap out of the bottom right corner opposite the impact point. I took the case off and installed it again and everything snapped in normally.
My screen is fine and everything works normally. Aside from asthetics, nothing is different than before the drop. I have read about some regular S4 screens breaking from far less. Maybe there is something to the "rugged" nature of the active.
Anyways, a picture is worth a thousand words so here are four pics. My first time uploading pics here so hopefully they turn out ok.
Ouch! My sincerest condolences.
I would be terrified while picking it up..

It's not a rugged phone ladies... It's the same as an s4 just water and dirt proof.
You drop it and it will break just as easy as a regular s4.

Ouch that sucks! Yeah I just got my Active today and I need to get a case and screen protector ASAP.
I didn't think this phone would be drop proof. It was advertised as waterproof/dustproof.
At least the screen is not cracked.
Ouch! At least a case will cover the damage and the screen is not cracked. One of the reasons I returned mine. It is a bit slippery. The ATT manager asked why I was returning it and I said no cases, no support and he scoffed at me. I then asked him when is the last time a Galaxy Device was launched and cases were not available on that day at the store? Even my captive had a case at ATT the day I bought it...It has been over a week and you can't even get an overpriced cases from ATT? No thanks.

Sounds like the case of "I haz monies." Paying full price 3 times sucks really really bad. I would hope you mean breaking the original, then breaking it at repair, and one more for good measure. Still, that's just crazy butterfingers, but I digress.
Op, I seriously doubt "rugged" means unchipable, or even blemish proof. If phone meets concrete from even three feet and the right angle, you'll either chip, dent, or scratch. In thing to be happy about is the glass or screen shattering. I'll take dents and chips over exploding screens any day. Still, not having cases for it is highly questionable. You'd think even Sammy would release a case, just to collect more money.

I cannot believe how ****ty the active is, this phone slipped out of my pocket and fell from about 10 inches up the day I bought it. The screen cracked in two places. Upper right corner and right below the back button.

One of the reasons I got rid of my old S4 was because people were having the screen crack while in their pocket with no trauma. I haven't heard any such reports on the Active just yet. Honestly, the one time I cracked a screen it was on my Note 1 and it was a drop of similar height and I had a Trident case on it. It sucks, but I can't see blaming an electronic device when I'm the one dropping it.

[Q] Pocket carry question

I just picked up a used S3 yesterday, to be here Monday. Was wondering who all carry their phone (any cellphone) in their pockets. I have had numerous cellphones since 2000 and never carried my phone in my pocket due to the fear of breaking it. I wasn't so much worried about scratching the screen as physically breaking the phone. I have noticed while watching TV that many people just put them in their pockets. Which pocket due you carry, front or back?

Rear pocket for both the s2 I had, the current s3 as well as prior flip phones. Less chance of scratching in the back pockets. Never had an issue "sitting" on it, but I also tend to sit up straight.
That said, I have found the s2 to handle drops much better than the s3 does. One small drop on the s3 cracked the corner of the screen. Numerous drops of the s2 only ever dinged the corner of the phone. Never used a case for either phone either.

I always carry it in my back pocket. I routinely sit on it and have never had any problem. The only problem I had was I would constantly turn on the phone phone because of pressing the home key when I sat, so I rooted the phone and disabled the home keys "wake" feature.

As soon as you sit down, simply remove the phone and set it in front of you, on your lap or in your front pocket. It does not take long to make this switch.

Sadly it depends on the pants my s3 fits better in my back pocket because pant companies don't make front pockets big enough in women's clothes

Yep same here. Usually, my phone is in my back pocket, except for one pair of chinos where it is more comfortable in the front right pocket. I have never had an issue with sitting on my device, though I do get the occasional home button wake... Not that big of a deal though.

I'm always putting it in both my back and front pocket. Thankfully I've always remembered to take it out before I sit on it. The case I have on it is a little bulky but it kind of reminds me to take it out of my pocket

I have a slim case from Elago on it, so it is still quite thin. At this point, I don't even notice when I am sitting on it any more. I also have a quite slim wallet (actually the exact same thickness as my phone with its case on) so I cannot differentiate any unevenness between the two.

Very cool. Sadly I have to have a rugged case. I work in a dirty environment and a phone without a sturdy case would never survive very long. I alternate between my Otterbox defender and my lifeproof case. I'll soon be switching to the lifeproof permanently once the Otterbox is out of warranty which will be very soon.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Been carrying it in both pockets and so far no problems.

this phone is tough

So I lost my phone out of my pocket while riding my bike. Sprinting approx 40km up a hill. It jumped out, hit the road. And slid into the bushes. Front of the phone looks new back has some pretty bad scratches. But everything is pretty much fine. No dents no marks on screen. Was in a dot view case. A few scratches on the case and they instantly separated when impacting the ground, which kind of sucked.
That's funny because this feels like the most fragile android I've owned in 5 years. Mainly because my first one lived in my pocket but the camera still managed to get scratched to the point to where it was hard to find a spot on it that wasn't scratched. Now I don't feel comfortable carrying my phone at work. I carried my s4 everywhere with me for a year and not one scratch on the camera lens. This is my first phone with a screen protector on the camera lens.
That is why I have an otter box and a really expensive, tough screen protector. If you're planning on biking with your phone loose in your pocket, you may want to invest in those also!

ya the dot view case is cool but hardly serves the purpose of an actual case.
Should be a criminal offense to use a case for this phone.
Try and get a pair of arms not growing out of one's behind so the droppage is minimized.

Right, because you've never dropped anything in your life.

Cases actually assist this phone in other ways than just protection. For one, they make the touchscreen less susceptible to undesired palm touches when using it one handed, and can hide the loose volume rocker issue many people have.

I said criminal prosecution! Also, cruel and unusual!

The trick is to get a clear case. That's what I did. Didn't want to cover up all that arctic silvery goodness. :good:
Oh, that and not to drop it....
I would suggest getting a case like this for biking.
Hyperion M8 Case
The phone is no longer slippery and won't fly out of your pocket.
I use it for mountain biking and it stays put no matter where I put the phone (shorts pocket, back of jersey, etc.)

It's just fine to spend money for your phone's protection. This is one of the nicest phones.

I agree on the camera screen. Mine has a couple scratches as well. Never had any other phone do that. However the rest of the phone is scratch free which is even more strange. What protector are you using on the camera screen? I think I'm going to get HTC to fix it then apply a protector to it.

It feel out of my sweater's pocket right onto the blacktop as I was getting out of my car. Minor scratches on top left and bottom right on the back side. Oh well. I'll have to be more careful.

I thought I had a ton of scratches on my lens,I would wipe it off with a soft cloth and they wouldn't wipe off. Well today while sitting bored I just took my sleeve and rubbed with some pressure for a good 5 minutes. All those marks that looked like scratches all came of . Might try some alcohol on a qtip when I get home.
going back to the original op issue. I use the dot case when not biking and I use a otter box defender case mounted to the handle bars when riding. So far the otter box works very nice and does not come off on the bike ride. It takes around a minute to put the phone in the case every ride, but nothing to long.
one added bonus about the mounted otter box and m8. When listing to a talk podcast I sometimes do not use headphones, the speakers are plenty loud.
