Development with Kies Air App - Samsung Infuse 4G

Hey guys. I finally got around to playing with the Kies air app...and Wow! This app has some potential for sure.
I currently own an iPad (yeah yeah yeah I know...) and Kies works fairly well. A few things i noticed is a constant refresh and just a few other bugs. Is anyone interested in cleaning up the Kies app to make things run a bit better or even writing a new app that is a little more organized/operational? I would love to help but my programming knowledge is limited
Thoughts??

No Reason not to root and remove ATT bloatware and enable sideloading

Well I'm writing this because of the complaints of lagginess and/or crap from AT&T.
While I'm not a dev genius, I do know my way around iPhone OS and WM and Android is coming pretty naturally to me. IF YOU JUST READ THREE THREADS YOU CAN HAVE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PHONE. There. I said it.
Seriously, if you are complaining about it being laggy, its because the ATT crapware likes to turn on for no reason in the background. REMOVE it!
Install Titanium Backup, allow it to update and then go to manage and uninstall ONLY ATT APPS. don't get rid of google apps or **** goes crazy
If you're complaining about not being able to install LauncherPro or easytheter, learn how to sideload! Seriously, you can use adb and droid explorer if you'd like (really simple) or you can edit ONE LINE in your database and get it directly on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728121
If you're wondering how to do all this, just ROOT. It takes 30 seconds, it's longer to reboot the phone than to root it. Just get the update, it does absolutely nothing to your phone, just installs superuser.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725555
I'm just getting pissed because this is supposed to be a poweruser site and lots people here are just bickering about things when they could simply fix them.
I know my account doesn't have many posts, but I've been around (Didn't feel like keeping TyTNic_Dev was fitting considering I haven't had the TyTN for about 4 years now) And while I'll try and contribute what I can, IMO this subforum would be alot cleaner if everyone stopped complaining and kept everything relevent.
Talking about how you "hate the phone, its so laggy need to go back to iPhone" or just "don't understand what all the fuss about Android is" just GTFO, or leach off everyones contributions. It really drags the thread down when people have all that hate and negativity. Especially when a few tweaks and the phone runs like a dream.
I've rooted, enabled sideload, and removed bloatware, as soon as I get all the kinks in my flash plugin, I'll have a phone that is as powerful (or even better) than anything else currently on the market. I suggest you do the same, then you'll probably be singing its praises as well.
ok..phew..
/rant
so yeah, root and fix the phone. you'll be glad you did
Good post. Just to help people maybe throw some links where u say to do each mod.

I dont think this is true. I've never once seen it just start itself up.
But yes, rooting is easy, but there's not a whole bunch of reason to do it quite yet.
Edit- there's also not much reason to NOT do it either.
I agree with you 100%. Like yoursef, im not one to have tons of replies, but ive been following XDA since my Tilt (not tilt 2). I think the issue is that we have a lot of new followers (welcome!) coming over from the Iphone and they are not use to what this board is all about. These arent apps you just install, this is software development/enhancements all in one place. Hopefully when the WIKI is back up (or created rather), there can be a nice "how to" section for everyone to reference.

I just restarted my phone, and there was a huge list of apps that were running right off of startup. A lot were at&t (naviagtor, ect.) and some were not.
EDIT- I know a lot of people are talking abut the lag due to the samsung UI, but I really dont care about the live wallpapers and I have a regular background so I dont get any lag at all. I am excited about the 2.2 update to gain the speed and access to the other 256mb or RAM. That alone will make this device a great phone. I am really enjoying android verses my WiMo devices (tilt 2 was the latest).

If that's true then this is a good reason to do so but I haven't seen that happen I guess.
After I instaled task manager I noticed most att apps would start on there own. I was always looking at what was running to try and save my batt.
Ive never hit the att apps at all since I had phone. After rooting and removing att crap nothing tuns in background execpt what I open.

happens to me all the time. random AT&T crap will start on its own
Thanks guys, yeah whenever you start ANY navigator app, att navi will start (its triggered by the gps starting) when you start any music player att music starts (it is triggered by com.google.music(sic))
these little things can be avoided and lets be honest, the stock touchwiz music player is really good. I have copilot so no reason to pay att. Navigation is a top notch free gps too.
the only one I could see is maybe you like mobitv, that is actually pretty decent of an app, but things like allsport, where, ypmobile, all of these can be accomplished using the browser.
I'll edit the post to include the links, but I just feel like when I'd be working on code or something, if someone was whining it wouldn't motivate me.. Why would I wanna program the Captivate (apart form sheer love) for people who'd just complain you know?
I'm messing around with the sdk and what not and I just got me a second Captivate so i'll be doing all sorts of tests to see what it'll take to get stock froyo on it, but i'm still a novice so i'll keep updating everyone and hopefully we can get 2.2 as a community
@V DidDy 210 I like your attitude. I hope more devs like you come around to the captivate scene as I would and the community as well would greatly appreciate it. I know I will. I will try my best to contribute and help with any interesting development on this device.
I have rooted and removed the AT&T and many of the Samsung apps, but that didn't really change anything. If it were just those then owners of the International versions of the Galaxy S wouldn't be having the same issues. I think the problem is much more than AT&T bloatware.

Being a running process and actually consuming resources are two different things and I'm not seeing anything worth making a big deal about since they are just sitting in memory.

What is your problem? Is it laggy? I haven't noticed any lag on mine, I've removed the bloat (all of it) rooted (obviously) added sideloading, installed flash 10 and check all the dbs for any scripts that might still be activating unnecessary scripts.
I haven't found any, and unless I actively run something (widgets or apps) nothing is running on its own. Only the most rudimentary of services run in the background (unless I tell something to) and my phone is 99% lag free. It is laggy at startup while it is parsing through my media files and it is laggy when I have a bunch of apps open (I'm talking around 16-17) otherwise in day to day operation (browsing, phone calls, music listening, watching movies while on the treadmill, etc.) I have no problems.
I'll try and help you, just need more info on whats going on

This is true, but while they are running there they still consume even the smallest amounts of usable memory...unless you like the ATT apps there isn't any real reason to keep them. Even if it uses 1kb of ram...its still 1kb of ram wasted
Excellent post but more importantly.... it seems to be a very necessary post. I loved the site when I had my Hermes, Kaiser, Touch, and other HTC devices ~2006 - 2008 but now that I came back with my Android device, it definitely seems like the tone has changed.
My question its are we all having the same problem? I experience lag, unresponsive touch due to lag also a black screen that hangs when you open a app. If so, I'm rooting right now. Please some one confirm. BTW this its a universal problem with all Samsung galaxy s phone. So I'm inclined to think its the firmware not the att bloatware.

LOL. I thought you were serious for a moment.

Testers wanted.

Looking for testers for a future project that i am currently trying to work on. Hopes to support in the end a wide varity of the samsung devices but for now im looking for samsung tab owners galaxy s 4g owners and vibrant owners that wanna help people that have extra devices welcome just drop me a line....
What is this you ask...
Well since phones are now starting to catch up fast as far as speed and storage and ram and video capabilities of some of the lower end laptops i am going to currently start working on a Ubuntu verrant that will a custom Linux environment based of course off the phone or tabs hardware.
But why would anyone want to do this?
Well the reason for it sometimes its not 100 percent pheaseable to carry around a notebook net book and a few other devices and u may need access to a pc this may fit your bill.. That and It would just be intristing to have a actual linux client running on a phone
What are the goals of this?
get the linux kernel compiled with the drivers we need for audio video phone radio bluetooth keyboard and mouse support along with keeping support for all other phone related functions.
linux client that boots and lets you log into the the x windows interface and launch apps would be a great start thats the second goal
third will be to get the linux client to work not only with some of the applicatons on linux but also retain the phones ability to run the phones applicatons as well.
THe overall goal of this would be to be able to when you wanted hook your phone using the tv out capablity (supported devices) and use a Bluetooth keyboard mouse and printer and use it as a net book u could also surf the web type up emails and or documents some of which already can be done on some of the devices.. THis might also open up another avenue that we could use or devices for.
This is just a quick summery feel free to leave comments call me crazy or what not lol..
Sounds like a good plan

mostly everyone is going to be new to this lol or you talking about computer skills wise which i doubt it would take much since hes setting everything up..
well the idea behind it would be to odin a zimage with the core files on the sd card and have a script that would auto install the rom upon boot eg u odin rom phone boots says please wait while the os is installed go get some dinner whatever while it goes though it when u come back it would be up and running. LIke i said ultimatly i want it to work as a phone and a desktop. Well at least i got some intrest ill keep u posted on progress.
example would be when u used the usb tv out the phone could auto sense this and switch to what would account for desktop mode so you could use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to navigate and then when u unplug it the screen would switch to a more phone touch friendly enviroment. These are just ideas. Honestly not sure how this is going to work as far as a tab based device its prob alot easier and mb a vibrant phone cause of the large amounts of internal storage.
sg4g im stll trying to figure out how to work around this. Also to get kernels up and have them be more of a unitifed system so i could make one package that serves multi devices instead of x package for this y package for that it helps tremulously.
the goal is to keep this as tech newb friendly with keeping at least some decent functionality on it. SInce the os will setup and take care of video audio and what not the only think u would need really is bluetooth parings for the keyboard and mouse and a printer provided i can actually get this to work...
ill keep all intrested parties posted and when i get something to work with ill move to the android dev fourm for it.
http://phandroid.com/2009/05/27/what-if-ubuntu-could-run-android-applications-it-can/
as u can see they can get linux to run android apps heck theres even debin running on the g1 as far as linux goes. THe point of what i wanna do is make it a little more friendly and accessable without having to folllow 14 pages of directions and not to make the apps as a emulated portion but as a seemless intrgration.
Im interested. Very interested... Id be will to test when im not working and on the weekends.

There might be some damn good money in this idea for you as well.

well im loooking on ebay for someones bricked phone as i havea riff box so i could more then likley unbrick the phone for testing purposes.
Well the problem isnt installing linux onto the phone as i have went though many fourms and stuch getting linux on the phone seems to be the easy part with some reading and knowing what to do and not do. The real hurtle is a genuine way to cross link the libraries. So instead of running the android software as a virtual app (taken from screenies) to more of a native app across both platforms.
Im not looking to make this a omg it will run every peace of linux software ever written as these are phones not laptops notebooks net books desktops. THe goal would be primarlly for business people and people that would say need a quick way to read though e mail check Facebook maybe play a game here or there ( more then likely not) and type up documents if needed. THere is alot more limitation more so on the memory side of the phone then the processer and gpu capabilities considering open gl 4.1 is fully compatibly with open gl es for cellphones actually getting a ogl desktop isnt a really hard hurtle to get past. Since it retains the useability for open gl es

Disappearing keyboard fix?

It's starting to get really annoying and should be a priority. Does anyone know if it's in the works?.
Also I let a friend with an android phone try out my phone and the keyboard kept dissapearing on him. Needless to say, he will never buy windows phone.
I thought it was just me. I thought I was somehow touching the screen by mistake.
Now, I really want to throw this thing into a wall.
I read somewhere its to do with background tasks, everytime one in the background starts up the keyboard disappears so if its a rly big problem then try disabling all background tasks and live tiles?
Happens to me often as well.
I also get the LG logo/sleep of death often enough now.
Hmmm I don't have any of these issues :S
The latest update didn't fix it. Seems to have made it worse. I barely use that phone now. The keyboard closes out way too often resulting in misclicks and lost text that I had typed into input boxes.
I thought this was common knowledge. It even happened when typing this. wpcentral "http://forums.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-7-os-discussion/182948.htm" forums also have reports of this.
I just think and hope a fix is soon. No excuses.

I'm soooooo glad 2 know that others are also suffering from this stupid glitch, (now I know I'm not crazy anyway), I find that when it happens if I put my phone to sleep, and then wake it up, that seems 2 fix the issue; of course until it happens again 5 seconds frickin' later
I swear, sometimes I think Microsoft wants 2 lose WP7 customers, (and potential customers), and not because of the issues per say, (every phone has it's issues), but it's their total lack of giving a sh*t, dragging their asses, and not getting on a damn fix, (or @ least acknowledge there's a problem, and let people know you're working on it, $%#@%$#%@$%!!
**I think I'm going 2 join vetvito, and throw this MOFO right through the frickin wall, ARGHHHHH!!**
It doesn't seem to happen on my lumia 800, it hits the dvp hard now that I've finally begun to use the on screen keyboard on it.
Wow I thought it was just me too. Figured I would tap somewhere off the keyboard. Doesnt happen that often to me. Really only when Im using the xda app.
What would fix it just about every time was tapping off the input box somewhere then retapping on the input box.
Possibly an issue with non mango apps in mango.. Cuz the xda app is one of the only apps I use that hasnt been updated since mango. I cant remember if it ever happened to me while using IE.

You realy need to work in your anger management ...
Its just a "frickin" problem man and it will be fixed in the next update ...
Take it easy m8...chill out

you must've spent about 800 bucks for that Lumia , if your in Austin , Ill wait a bit before I shell that much for a phone
I can't believe there is no fix for this yet. Its the second most annoying thing right after the push notification not working.
Sent from my T8788 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
@reeg420 - Thanx for the work around, I was using the sleep function 2 get around this very annoying issue, but your workaround is so much faster, and less frustrating
@colossus_r - Just because you're content w/ owning a expensive device, that can't even get the simple things right, (and it's been over a year), doesn't mean I am. I don't need anger management, because I am actually a very laid back guy, but when I wanted 2 vent I vented; who cares.
I see it like this, I paid close too $700 for my phone, waited for over a year 2 get the most basic functions, (and this is from a company that is supposedly, "trying", 2 keep/gain customers), and now those basic functions are again not working, so I don't know about you, but I believe this is bull****, and if Microsoft really wanted 2 fix the issue they would.
It's not like this issue just cropped up today, and only affects 1 person, and it just so happens that the keyboard working properly, is just a little wee important. like N8ter said, this among other issues almost makes the phone a pain in the ass 2 use, so why use it @ all, and I think I'm going 2 start taking a stance like him, because this is unacceptable; period!!
**Hell, I even updated my phone just about an hour ago, but alas no fix, I guess, "the theory", of the fix being in the next update kinda fell flat on it's face**
I boxed this phone up for days and eventually whipped it back out. The keyboard issue is so frustrating... They really need to get that fixed asap.

most apps not working?

Edit: sorry, i thought i was in the note section. My bad. If you have an input please reply while i get a mod to move this.
My uncle has the note, and he keeps saying that most apps aren't working/compatible.
Is this true? I feel i can't get an honest answer out of him as he's showing his colors as an Apple fanboy now, which is fine, but he keeps ****ting on Android which is starting to annoy me a bit as i know how good is.
iOs is 100% made for him, it's easy, and he doesn't need to make any effort to do anything (he thinks).
Sorry for ranting, i don't mind ios to be honest, but i like to have complete control of my phone, he doesn't.
So, I'm on the sgs2, and so far, all the things I've downloaded have worked and have worked well. Is this not the case for the note?
have you noticed a lot of incompatibility?
He is stock gb by the way. No interest in rooting or anything. Seems happy enough to wait for his carrier to bring him ics.
Also, if you did have issues with apps etc.. Was it resolved when you upgraded to ics?

Back to the Future or Kit Kat 4.4

It's been a little over a week now of my downgrade experiment. I really never had a chance to see my Shield LTE running Kit Kat 4.4 and I'm overjoyed with how much more reliable it is now.
The only con I really found was some Bluetooth playback issues with VLC player installing Viper Audio seemed to fix that.
In a nutshell I have lollypop running on My 1st gen Nexus7 was on the Shield and 4.4 on my Moto X. I found on both devices Lollipop added lag and freezing some app issues and restarts. I won't consider Lollypop or ART and plan to skip it completely.
There is no way 5.0 is touching my phone. My 1st gen MotoX has been the best phone I have ever seen, remarkable coming from a phone store manager.
As a off topic I also love Harbormobile.com's $15 tablet plan At&t has better coverage in my area but T-Mobile is 30/10 compared to 10/2 and I get free music streaming At&t didn't offer for twice the price. My application was for road use.
Ok, I give up. A few days later this attempt failed too. I spend more time in the day attempting to unfreeze, control lag and generally fix this tablet than actually using it. I officially call shenanigans on Nvidia and their ability to come up with incredible specs and features but still be utterly useless. Done with Nvidia and perhaps even Android. I find it hilarious that my 1st gen Moto X outperforms this piece of **** seemingly in every way with hundreds of apps on it...

Bro my tablet flies in every day use, and in gaming. On stock Lollipop as well. I have no clue what people are having problems with to be completely honest...but I have literally tried to make this tablet studder with no avail.
My tablet also had lag issues and hang ups. But I read somewhere that doing factory resets helped for many users. So I did a factory reset. That seemed to help a LOT with the lag/system hangs. Also, maybe you should double check the nVidia Shield Power Control options. I kept it on the Optimized setting and it's really smooth with good battery life. I hope your experience improves! =)

OK JRummy apps "App Manager" has a feature called (MinFree Manager) built-in just max out the top slider and leave it running in background. The app has a set at boot option but it won't work on my 4.4 LTE version.

OK JRummy apps "App Manager" has a feature called (MinFree Manager) built-in just max out the top slider and leave it running in background. The app has a set at boot option but it won't work on my 4.4 LTE version.

Guys, second post on this topic today. Just want to add my experience in getting my NST out of lag hell. I tried everything including lollipop (I had such high hopes for that one after nothing I tried got KK to perform), all the updates, custom fix ideas, everything. I haunted these forums for months. Was very frustrated and nearly threw my device against a wall several times. Then I decided to just try it at factory settings (which, upon reflection, I don't think I ever did I was so keen to update right out of the box) so I did a reset and turned off updates (actually Froze them using SDMaid).
Bottom line - now this tablet ****ing kills. It's rooted and Xposed/GravityBox-ed up. All the best root apps, etc. I'm so happy, I can't tell you. I gladly traded an over hyped OS "upgrade" for a pure Android KK. After 6 months of not a single substantial issue, I'm finally back here just curious to see if there are any new tweaks to try out. Sadly, I still see people with exactly the same issues and frustrations as I once had.
If I may make a suggestion, do a Titanium backup and then a factory reset with updates turned off - you have absolutely nothing to lose and a great tablet experience that sees it live up to its expectations to gain.
And thanks to all for taking part in this supremely helpful suite of NST forums. I wish I had a real fix to offer, I really do. But I can tell you that I'm not missing out on anything by using a pure Android KK 4.4.2.
Best of luck,
BlackLizrd
