Back to the Future or Kit Kat 4.4 - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's been a little over a week now of my downgrade experiment. I really never had a chance to see my Shield LTE running Kit Kat 4.4 and I'm overjoyed with how much more reliable it is now.
The only con I really found was some Bluetooth playback issues with VLC player installing Viper Audio seemed to fix that.
In a nutshell I have lollypop running on My 1st gen Nexus7 was on the Shield and 4.4 on my Moto X. I found on both devices Lollipop added lag and freezing some app issues and restarts. I won't consider Lollypop or ART and plan to skip it completely.
There is no way 5.0 is touching my phone. My 1st gen MotoX has been the best phone I have ever seen, remarkable coming from a phone store manager.
As a off topic I also love Harbormobile.com's $15 tablet plan At&t has better coverage in my area but T-Mobile is 30/10 compared to 10/2 and I get free music streaming At&t didn't offer for twice the price. My application was for road use.

Ok, I give up. A few days later this attempt failed too. I spend more time in the day attempting to unfreeze, control lag and generally fix this tablet than actually using it. I officially call shenanigans on Nvidia and their ability to come up with incredible specs and features but still be utterly useless. Done with Nvidia and perhaps even Android. I find it hilarious that my 1st gen Moto X outperforms this piece of **** seemingly in every way with hundreds of apps on it...

Bro my tablet flies in every day use, and in gaming. On stock Lollipop as well. I have no clue what people are having problems with to be completely honest...but I have literally tried to make this tablet studder with no avail.

My tablet also had lag issues and hang ups. But I read somewhere that doing factory resets helped for many users. So I did a factory reset. That seemed to help a LOT with the lag/system hangs. Also, maybe you should double check the nVidia Shield Power Control options. I kept it on the Optimized setting and it's really smooth with good battery life. I hope your experience improves! =)

OK JRummy apps "App Manager" has a feature called (MinFree Manager) built-in just max out the top slider and leave it running in background. The app has a set at boot option but it won't work on my 4.4 LTE version.
I now have my Shield tablet running well due to this app. Try it out should work for you too,.

I think I'll download it. Need to keep Chrome in its place.

Yup lemme know what 6ou think.

Guys, second post on this topic today. Just want to add my experience in getting my NST out of lag hell. I tried everything including lollipop (I had such high hopes for that one after nothing I tried got KK to perform), all the updates, custom fix ideas, everything. I haunted these forums for months. Was very frustrated and nearly threw my device against a wall several times. Then I decided to just try it at factory settings (which, upon reflection, I don't think I ever did I was so keen to update right out of the box) so I did a reset and turned off updates (actually Froze them using SDMaid).
Bottom line - now this tablet ****ing kills. It's rooted and Xposed/GravityBox-ed up. All the best root apps, etc. I'm so happy, I can't tell you. I gladly traded an over hyped OS "upgrade" for a pure Android KK. After 6 months of not a single substantial issue, I'm finally back here just curious to see if there are any new tweaks to try out. Sadly, I still see people with exactly the same issues and frustrations as I once had.
If I may make a suggestion, do a Titanium backup and then a factory reset with updates turned off - you have absolutely nothing to lose and a great tablet experience that sees it live up to its expectations to gain.
And thanks to all for taking part in this supremely helpful suite of NST forums. I wish I had a real fix to offer, I really do. But I can tell you that I'm not missing out on anything by using a pure Android KK 4.4.2.
Best of luck,
BlackLizrd

Another Good Bye thread

Hey guys... well I didn't want this to be another "**** you Motorola, I'M OUT!" thread, instead I wanted to let you guys know how I got my A2 replaced and say thanks to a few people.
I'm currently on my 4th A2 and this one is starting to exhibit all the same signs that the 2nd one did (audio from the speaker is bad, random restarts etc.) I've been with AT&T since it was AT&T then bought by Cingular then back to AT&T, so I have a little clout with them. I've also made sure to document with them every issue both locally here at the repair center and with phone support.
I called up AT&T 2 nights ago and went through the usual run around. I let them know I had already done a factory restore and all the other scripted steps and the problem persists. FInally I got them to agree to replace the phone. They initially offered me a Galaxy sII or an Atrix HD. The rep stayed on the phone for 15 minutes quietly and patiently waiting while I researched each phone's specs and reviews. I told them I needed to think about it and research each phone. I was none too happy about this because when I bought my phone I had an entire store to choose from, but now they were only offering me choices of 2 phones, neither of which I would have chosen from the current crop. I asked them if I could call back with a decision but the rep informed me that "other call centers" don't have the same abilities she did at this call center but that she could call me the next day at a specific time.
When she called back I explained my frustration again with only being able to choose from another locked down Motorola phone or a last generation Samsung, and politely asked for a manager. She put me on hold and came back to tell me that it was in the middle of a shift change and that the sole manager was on a call with another customer BUT she had asked him for another option of phone and he agreed to an HTC OneX. I accepted and they even waived the expedited shipping fee.
So I'm leaving this bastard device in the dust but wanted to say a HUGH thank you to to entire community before I left. Thanks to Jim, rdavisct, Apex-Strider, and everyone for being a great community that stuck together despite being abandoned by Motorola.
TL;DR: AT&T is giving me an HTC OneX because the Atrix2 is a steaming pile of poo, and thanks to everyone here for being awesome.
Sorry about your experience but it's not representative of the A2. You were just terribly unlucky to get 4 lemons in a row! Anyway, great deal you extracted for yourself. Enjoy your new phone.
Man you guys(customers in the us) are really kings! Cant expect anything like that here, even if its a legit problem they will tell you that there is a liquid damage and its not covered under warranty.. thats how bad customer care is in india.

I am sorry to say but it is kinda normal.... I have had 7 A2s now, 4 of them were my fault because of the BL stuff and the other 3 were just issues with the phone itself.
Hahaha...great score, One X? Nicccee. Sorry to have ya leave but I'm sure your not lol. Good luck in the future and enjoy the new toy!

did you ask your father about the water damage? what about the indicators?
no offense but out of 90% phones i've seen that had battery drain, the water sticker was red.
Wow... good deal on the one X!
I bought my A2 new and NEVER had an issue that wasn't my fault (recently accidentally deleted the home launcher app so now I'm forced to run a play store launcher).
The only thing that bugs me bout this phone is that locked BL and no official ICS.... other than that great phone!
Enjoy!

I find hard to believe the histories of this people saying that they are going for their 4, 5 or even 6 device and all of them gave them problems, i think they just dont understand that android is a very unstable OS and if they install a lot of apps from the play store (a lot of them crash sometimes) and also are trying to install custom roms and other stuff it is obvious they are gonna get some kind of random reboot or any other issue, but that does not mean that the phone itself is bad.
now some people may kill me for saying this, but i think atleast untill gingerbread, android is far away from iOS (i dont know about ICS), say all you want that apple dont let you do this and that, but iOS is just a great OS, even from its first version was as smooth as "project butter" in jelly bean or even more. before i had my atrix i just had a "regular phone" and an ipod touch 4g, its been hard to get used to android. is a little laggy, the web browser is not even closer to the browser in iOS (i dont really care about flash) and the famous widgets of android are just crap, the so called super customization is not more that a bunch of ugly widgets on the screen that just make the phone looks "dirty" , windows phone gave a much better and elegant solution for widgets.
everyone is always hating on apple here, and there are some reasons to hate apple, i agree, but for the most part the iphone has been ahead of android phones since always.

my comment it is not about the devs here, it is about an OS. i really don't understand your reply. i really appreciate the work of the android communities for trying to make the user experience on adroid better so if you misunderstood what i said, it was nothing against devs.
I don't do any dev work because I don't have time to learn, hold a full time job in a completely unrelated field, and raise my 18 month old daughter. I'm on my third A2, both previous ones had factory issues(refurbs through insurance replacement). The phone does have issues, but anyway, nice score on the onex and enjoy!

Congrats on the sweet upgrade. Jealous....
I had a similar issue with my HTC Vivid. In my case it was a software flaw that when you get into an edge area it trys to hit HSPA+. Like you they didn't offer me anything. I hit an AT&T Corporate store. The day I hit this store a district manager was there. At no point did I get mad just voiced my displeasure. They did me one better by allowing me to take any phone so I took the Note. I passed on S3 even. Given my HTC issues I wasn't taking the One X.

My first A2 died less than a month after I got it. It flat out died, no power no boot up. Nothing. I took it back to best buy.
My 2nd A2 developed an issue after 4 months of use where any audio from the external speaker would distort worse and worse during use (I use my phone as a GPS unit. I'm new to Seattle.) and then eventually cut out entirely. I work nights and one night it did this to me on the way home. I had to detour from my usual route home due to massive construction. I didn't notice that the GPS had stopped talking until I was 7 miles past my exit.
My 3rd A2 had almost no WiFi connectivity. I could be sitting feet from my router and it would register almost no connectivity. I verified this with a WiFi analyzer, WiFiFoFum and speedtest.net.
My 4th A2 (this one) is starting to have the same audio distortion and is constantly rebooting. Not force close but a hard restart. AT&T sent me a battery first but the problem continues.
The Android OS is NOT an unstable OS, and for even suggesting that you've lost all credibility. I've played with custom Roms since my PocketPC days and I know when to screw with them and when not to. After my 2nd A2 I stopped with all of that except for rooting so I could install a few apps that require it. With my last A2 I've been COMPLETELY stock, not even a root to make sure that if there was another problem it was with the phone and not something I've done.
I have an iPhone for work and my A2 for personal use. Each phone is different but saying one OS is better than another is ignorant. They are tools that do different things, saying one is better than another is like saying that a wrench is a better tool than a hammer without giving the context for what you are using it for.

Flat out busted your speaker membrane, if you cant hear it near 70% volume, just plug it in your car audio. Wouldn't be surprised to hear you had your car radio on, and the you had the 0.1w phone speaker competing with it.
If you've ever seen a proper gps unit, take note of the size of the speaker on it, its massive compared to the one on your phone.

Your phone's antenna wasn't plugged in properly. It was probably a refurb(but not necessarily), the shoulder of your antenna plug got popped out of place when they put the case back. Sloppy work from the (refurb) facility - wasn't tested properly.

You didnt learn from your mistake last time - I don't blame you, you didnt know what happened - and busted the speaker again. Keep in mind some apps like the gps(or roms like sc) one can have the volume boosted, just because the max has been put there, doesnt mean you should run it near it. The bass boost options dont do it alot of good either, it puts a huge extra strain on it and I doubt there's at least a software crossover in the thing.
About the reboots, could be anything, for example, if you live in a hot area, it can easily happen that your phone overheated while installed on your windshield.
You know there's a saying, if you're always clear by means of yield(give way) signs, but get into 10 car accidents a year, you're probably still doing something wrong.

the audio distortion seems to be a relatively known issue with the atrix 2, and most of the issues you name here seems to be software related rather than hardware.
and yes, android it is unstable compared to iOS, i have not tried Windws phone enough time to give an opinion.. in this few weeks with android i've had more crashes with apps and little issues than i had with iOS in months.
maybe the kernel itself doesn't fully crash, it is linux after all, but i repeat atleast untill gingerbread (i have not tried ICS or jelly bean yet) android has a lot to improve.
and i do not agree that "they are tools that do different things" , they are basically smarthphones that do the same things in different ways and yes, i can find one better than the other, it is a PERSONAL OPINION after all.

[Q] bought the TF700. return?

Just found out about the MAJOR lag issues surrounding it I have 14 days to return it. I was looking for a $400 tablet, not too old with good battery life and came across this.
Do the clean and cromi-x roms 'renew' it completely?
Would you have returned your tablet and gotten something else if you'd known this would happen??
Should i return it, or just keep it (and flash)?
I keep hearing people saying to get the nexus 10, but even that has its issues apparently (battery drain + slow charging).

Yes, clean rom cromi, cm10.1, etc.. speed up the device very well! it will fly
I own a TF300T and we have basicly the same thing on stock rom: very bad lag! so if you like stock i would reccomend crom-x/cleanrom or TF700 specific roms based on stock
Honestly i would return it and save the money for some upcoming device. It's one year old,you have to unlock it (and loose your warranty) in order to have more decent performance and you will mostlikely end-up spending more time to tweak the device than actually enjoy it.Ofcourse this is only my opinion, the final decision it's up to you.

If I had it to do over again...it would go back. Sorry to say that but you should NOT have to make ANY changes to a tablet that is supposed to be at the top of the line. My wife's AT105-T1032 Toshiba, is a lot more stable than the TF700.
Here are some of MY problems:
ANY browser will loose input from the onscreen keyboard...doesn't matter if it's Asus KB or Swiftkey or Google
The lag is so bad at times the KB won't appear for a second or two
ANY browser will just force close for no appearent reason...doesn't happen often but it does happen
The screen is loose on the lower right corner, I thought this issue had fixed itself but I noticed it again the other day
When posting on forums none of the browsers work correctly. They make it a horrible experiance and I usually have to give up and go to my PC to complete posts I want to make. If you insert a word that was mispelled it usually will appear at the top of the post you are making and delete any text it replaces. VERY VERY frustrating and has been an issue for me from day 1. (a year ago)
Here's how I intend to fix them:
When the warranty is up I will try rooting and unlocking and a different ROM. If I can't get that to make it work right for me I WILL take it out in the driveway and beat the living crap out of it, place it in a box and send it back to Asus with a detailed explanation of why they now have it in their hands
Now- it's your decision to make and you will probably read a lot of negitive replies as well as see quite a few on the forums about TF201 and TF700. It seems like people go to the forums to complain not realizing that they aren't supported by Asus. So get ready for more like this one but also you'll get quite a few saying how great this tablet is. It still all comes down to YOU.
I have NEVER been this frustrated by any computer and I'm not a happy Asus customer. BUT I will still buy Asus products, just no more tablets. I have an old P5GPL (P4) Asus motherboard that has been running for 8-9? years and has never given me one days trouble. I've replaced everything around it, power supply, hard drive and video card and it just keeps on keepin' on!

@Pretoriano80, after being on the custom rom for some time, do you see it using too much memory or getting sluggish? It's one year old but the new 10inch tablets are $500 and up. what option do i have?
I looked through your all in one guide but wouldn't know where to start since my tablet is already updated to 4.2.1.
So how would one unlock the bootloader if the instructions listed were for version below 4.2.1?
Does it mean Id have to downgrade to ICS first?
Also don't know what comes first, unlocking or rooting. Just rooting the device will not allow installation of Cromi-x/cleanRom right?
Please please return it...I know you will be tempted to unlock and install CROMI. But don't....I am using the tablet for the last 6 months I think. If it weren't for CROMI, I would have jumped over it in anger.
Please just return it, and get a better tablet.

Should i return it, or just keep it (and flash)?
I keep hearing people saying to get the nexus 10, but even that has its issues apparently (battery drain + slow charging).

I kinda agree with the above, but I bought a used one of eBay not knowing what I'd gotten into. I just want to check email, watch movies, shop, etc. No real life-saving issues. Didn't notice much lag or problem with stock but went ahead and installed CROMI-X not knowing anything about android, etc. I love mine. At 400, maybe not, half the price, sure.

You can ROOT your device without unlocking your bootloader, but you can't install custom roms and a custom recovery in this case, just some apps that need rooting or some tweaks. The good part with only rooting is that your warranty will still be valid because you can return to a clean stock rom anytime. For rooting your device on 4.2.1 you will have to use MotoChopper (search in the tf700t forum).
If you unlock the bootloader then you can kiss goodbye your warranty and enjoy custom roms, custom kernels, etc but you can't go back to a bootloader locked state anymore.
No matter what you will choose (root or unlocking) don't expect miracles or else you will be disappointed. The first time you install a rom you will notice much gain in performance, but after you install some of your favourite apps you will see the performance going down again (imho this is also the reason why you can find bad and good opinions about this device, because everyone use it in different ways). Also forget about benchmarks it won't do any good to you or the device itself and you will just end-up just hunting higher scores.
I really don't know which device to recommend you becaause i only have this one, but read some reviews from trusted sites (Engadget for example was maybe one of the few to do a honest review about the tf700t) or wait until some new generation devices will be released.
Btw one year ago i paid 500€ just for the tablet so paying 500$ now for a new generation device it's in line with the tablet market in my opinion, so once again mate, it's your call.
Even with cromi or cm10.2 the tablet lags. It's not good enough! RETURN RETURN RETURN!
I actually love this tab. I did do a lot of research before buying it though so I knew some issues before I bought so I also knew that I was not going to buy one for full retail and be happy. I did a lot of hunting around on craigslist and ended picking up a 64GB tab with the docking station and quite a few accessories for a little less than half of retail. I then immediately unlocked and rooted it, installed CROMI-X, and tried a coupe different kernels until I found the combination that worked for me. Finally I created a Nandroid of this setup and started using the tab.
I did have experience rooting and ROM'ing as well so I knew that I would be comfortable with that aspect and I always try to stay a little behind the curve of teh latest gadget so others can figure out how to fix the issues (because for every device there are issues).
As of right now I couldn't be happier. I got a tab that does everything I need it to and it seems sufficiently fast and responsive to me.
Would I have been happy if I paid full price a year ago and had to suffer through all of the issues that I hear being talked about on this forum? No. but at half price and time to give the great and dedicated developers on this site a chance to address the worst of the issues, Hell yeah, Great tab :good:
Just my experience so far.

Thanks guys, I'll just return it then. I did a lot of research as well before picking this one...its a great tablet, but not worth full price considering its drawback. I'll probably wait for the next Infinity Pad that's coming out, although I've been hearing that even Tegra 4 has issues

Try cm 10.2 no more lag at all:thumbup:
I agree with everyone here. Return it. If you want a tablet right now just get the Nexus 10 or maybe even the Toshiba Excite Pro or sony experia z. If you want a kb dock get the HP slatebook x2 which I just bought and it a very speedy and smooth tablet. Screen isn't as high contrast and cant get as bright but it's not too bad. But if you can wait just wait for Asus to release the new Infinity pad and hopefully it performs as well as the slatebook x2. I have gotten so used to the tf700 that I did not realize how bad it really is even with cromi x or data2sd mod compared to the slatebook. So please take everyone's advice on this one.
EDIT: Posted too early and did not read your post about returning it. Good for you!

I've been on cromi x for a while now. You must've set your transition to 0 to not notice any lag in transition. There's still I/O issue no matter which cromi version or kernel. Anyway were getting off subject. Thanks for the advice. Let's get back on topic.

[Q] Can someone with a stock Verizon build test Netflix? (audio sync issues)

So this is a bit of a cross-post from here where I asked the general M8 community.
There is at least some minor evidence that T-Mobile and/or Sprint M8's do not have this problem - but at least on the former it may be due to a custom ROM.
Basically Netflix audio sync is off. You will see lips move a good .25 seconds before sound comes out. That may not sound like much, but it is very noticeable - like watching a bad dubbed movie.
As the thread above shows, I have tried just about everything I can think of. I'm 100% sure it's not my network connection, Netflix account, or show - as everything works fine under the same controls on my wife's S5.
I'm sure there has to be a good chunk of people who use Netflix, and I find it hard to believe I'm not finding more reports about this problem.
thanks.
I just tried it on mine. Stock 4.4.3. Seems just fine. I tried several different movies and they all seem to play as they should.
I tried it on my wife's which is running sense and I didn't notice any sync issues either

Just doesn't make any sense. If mine doesn't work - and the Verizon one I tried didn't work, and the AT&T one I tried didn't work... ???
I'm thinking about swapping it out (again), but since every one I've actually had my hands on has this issue, why should I expect any to function?
Advice?

I'm not S-Off on this phone yet and am not going to pay for sunshine until I'm 100% sure I am keeping this phone (don't want to pay if I need to return it). I usually prefer to run a stock (close to stock ROM)... although if I could I certainly would flash another to test. But, at this point I'm stock to only trying things on stock.

I don't know what to tell you. It is odd that you see the same problem on multiple devices like that. I tried it again and watched for the slightest bit of out of sync and mine is spot on. I'm pretty fussy about this type of thing too. Used to have PMP. I'd rip my own movies to put on it and would run into sync issues like this once in a while. Drove me crazy. That's not much use to you but I'm just trying to get the point across that if mine was out of sync, I'd notice it.

I do appreciate it...knowing that someone else is on Stock and cognizant of the issue, but not seeing it.
Curious how long have you had your M8 for and if it is the standard Gunmetal grey?
Also...are you rooted and/or Unlocked//S-Off? Have you ever flashed a custom ROM or been on stock?
Finally, are you running the latest Netflix from Play Store? (updated Sept 9th)
Or try installing an older Netflix.apk? That's what I'd try.

My phone is one of the earlier ones. Bought it 4 days after the launch date. And yes, it's gunmetal grey. It's rooted, unlocked, and S_Off. Has been since they released Firewater. Seems to me that was within the first 2 weeks after launch.
I've flashed quite a few custom roms in the past but it's been a while now. Stock Sense suits me just fine (first time I've ever said that about stock anything ) . I always ended up coming back to stock. I can make all the tweaks I want using things like xposed or a root file manager and stuff still all works
As for the version of Netflix I'm using, mine was a version or 2 behind but I just updated it to the newest this morning to see if there was any difference. I still don't see any sync issues.

I did backrev to two different 2.x versions and then finally an 1.8x version. They all had issues, although the 1.8 was much less noticeable. I may not have even noticed it on that one if I hadn't had the previous issues. Of course, 1.8x is over 2 years old and has some other buffering issues.

Thanks. I think I'm going try to get another replacement - although I don't have high hopes based on the fact that the other ones I've had my hands on had the same issue.
One last thing...can you tell me one show/movie that you were watching that looked good to you (time stamp too)?
I can't believe I just had bad luck with the 3 I picked, especially since they looked fine on my wife's phone.
Well, just received my 3rd M8 from the retailer.
1st one I didn't test the Netflix issue on because I had a return issued quickly due to the screen not being flush and loosey buttons.
2nd one is what i have posted about here with the Netflix issues.
3rd one just arrived - screen also has quality issues, not being flush where it meets the grill (and no, it wasn't designed to be that way as my 2nd one is almost perfect and the other two vary the level the glass meets the grill in a variety of ways...inconsistency means that at least 2 of the 3 of them are wrong).
Anyway... I have the exact same issue with the audio sync on the new phone as well.
At this point, I have to believe that every M8 has this issue and those that don't see it either haven't tried or don't care enough to notice.
Perhaps this issue only happens with the Stock ROM, which is why many of you don't see it(?).
I have watched half a dozen shows/movies on Netflix and all of them have the issue. I would say 4 of them it is just blatant...easily a quarter second off or more. On the other ones, it is maybe barely noticeable...but still there.
Again, I have tried 2 M8s that were in my possession, one in the Verizon store, and one in the AT&T store (4 total).
I've contacted Netflix and they were mostly useless. They claim they escalated the issue to R&D, but could provide me no sort of ticket tracking or call back, which basically means nothing will ever be done.
I was surprised that HTC support took more interest than I thought, since I normally would blame this issue on the software vendor as they should be the ones responsible for coding to work with a particular OS. HTC escalated as well, but by the time someone gets back to me on it (7-10 days), my return period will be over. Even then, I doubt HTC will do anything about it as it appears to only be Netflix (not YouTube). OTOH, seeing as Netflix works fine on their competitor's phones (S5), maybe they will actually pursue it.
I appreciate that some people responded that they don't see the issue - but from my standpoint...you can understand how I can't see that it is possible that I have tried 4 phones (from 2 providers) that all have the issue. I have no explanation.
The only thing I haven't tried on these is to run something other than Stock, because I can't firewater S-OFF, and am not paying for Sunshine since it is tied to device and I have had to switch the device so many times.
Right after I did the tests today, Netflix appears to have gone down. When I get back from dinner tonight I will post a couple of samples that show the issue clearly and some others where it is more minute.
New Girl - Season 3 - Episode 1 - Starting at 3:25 (after intro), the whole conversation between the two dudes. It is really clear when the white guy says at 3:35 "To become best friends" and at 4:37 when he says "I'm also a socket." Really the whole conversation it is evident, but these two lines it is exceptionally apparent.
3 Days to Kill (Movie) - 49:58 "I'm plugging in my phone, this stuff sucks." In reality, much of what I skimmed through in this movie looked pretty good...I think it is partly because of how the actors enunciate and move their lips (as opposed to the white guy in New Girl who really moves his lips when he speaks). But, here at 49:58 you can see it off.
Bones - Season 1 Episode 1 (Pilot) - 15:36 "Lennie Kravitz or Vanessa Williams"
There does seem to be a bit of inconsistency in how good or bad things are. Usually, I can see something off within the first 10 seconds of conversation, and sometimes I need to watch a couple of minutes. I'll admit that there are some points where it looks almost perfectly fine - enough that I might not have detected it were there not these more blatant areas.
Nonetheless, when I watch on my PC, or on my wife's S5 there are absolutely zero problems.
Netflix still seems to be flaky right now, so I'm not going to try to get more examples until I get some more feedback.
I have the same issue. I just installed the newest firmware and update and the poroblem is still there. I do have the HK audio installed, maybe I should disable it? It's only an issue with netflix though.
Ordered a chromecast, it better not persist the problem onto that!
Then again youtube has it's own problem, seems to be network throttling to me pauses every 10 seconds or so...Been like that for some time too.
BTW most M8's don't have perfectly flush screens, those seem to be the anomaly rather than the standard. Some are worse than others though. I honestly never really notice it though in use, just when I first purchased.

Good to know that the issue is still there with HK (which means you upgraded the audio DSP, right?). I wanted to try that, but since I'm not S-Off I couldn't.
I have hardly used YouTube, so haven't seen a throttling issue...I just watched a few videos long enough to validate there were no sync issues.
No way this is carrier specific. I just installed 4.4.4 Pac man Rom on my nook HD+, then installed netflix. Audio is also out of sync, maybe not quite as bad as the M8 (which is faster) but it is still an issue. It does not look like it affects the chromecast though.
Looks like LG, Motorola Maxx and other phones are also having issues. Might be more or less related to 4.3 / 4.4 android devices.
Well it's not just 4.3/4.4 since my M8 was tested on 4.2.
The only other KitKat device that I tested on was a G5...and it was flawless there.
I suppose though if there are a lot of other devices having issues on KitKat then it definitely may be more of a Netflix problem.
Also, due to the extreme lack of response to my post, and others I have seen over the past year on various devices, most people claim not to see the issue.
I can only believe that (at least on the M8) these people either don't watch closely enough to see/care, or else they are almost impossibly watching only shows that it wouldn't be visible in (which based on my sampling would be pretty amazing).
I have an escalated case with HTC and they should be getting back to me shortly if they can recreate the problem.
At this point I'm just as frustrated that no one else is making this an issue as I am that it is one. If I can get HTC to at least admit that there is a sync issue, then I will at least feel exonerated and perhaps other people will begin admitting that they see issues on their devices as well. If this extends beyond the M8, then likely Netflix is the one that is going to need to be prodded by the public to get their act in gear.
I supposed i would be a nice test if someone had a device that could run something pre KitKat to see if the problem doesn't exist, and if it arises when upgraded to KitKat.

The fact that the phone isn't the optimal media for Netflix doesn't diminish the problem. Although, admittedly I'm sure it is a secondary or tertiary outlet for most...as it is for me, it is still supposed to work (i.e. it is listed as a compatible application). Additionally, it has worked on other phones/versions of android...so there is obviously some issue.
I Netflix doesn't want to support it on phones, because they think it is unimportant, then they should clearly indicate it is not compatible. Since many new phones are 4x+ more powerful than a $40 tabled that runs Android, there isn't a great reason why it shouldn't work fine.
October 15th update of Netflix hadn't made anything better.
HTC was supposed to follow up with me and it has been 3 weeks. I am reaching out to them today to see where they are with their testing.

Overloaded RAM

Hey guys, I would really appreciate some help with this. My phone is often extremely laggy, to the point that when it's asleep and I get a phone call, it wouldn't wake up for me to be able to answer it (even though I can hear it ringing) until the person calling hangs up. I know TW is famous for being slow but this is just ridiculous. The only thing I have running in the background with the exception of normal TW stuff is the DS Battery Saver module (only set to control wifi/Data, not killing apps) and yet often I can see that the phone is using more than 2.2GB of RAM (after I've killed everything in the task manager). How can this be? Surely the system itself doesn't need THAT much RAM? I shudder to think what phones with a smaller RAM are like.
I'm running the Thunderbolt ROM (basically just deodexed stock 5.0.1) with Xposed and the "Fix Lollipop Memory Leak" module. Is there anything else I can do? I love the design of this phone but I am close to getting rid of it and going back to Sony which was always smooth as silk. I would prefer to stick to the Note though since I love the design and extra functionalities but what use are them if I have enough time to make a cup of coffee every time I try to do something?
It must be your Rom. I used to love to installed custom rom on my S1 and S2. But at the end of the day, custom roms are all buggy.

I would agree with you but if anything, it was worse when I was on stock which is why I decided to try a custom rom (and I tried many buggy ones before settling on this). I'm not someone who spend my time flashing various roms just to experiment, it's usually because I find the performance or features lacking.
Have you tried to wipe everything and odin back to stock? Im on stock, unroot, and I dont have any issues yet.

Same. I just don't even bother with Custom ROMs except if it gives more battery life. KNowing how hard Samsung has worked to make customization harder, I haven't bothered with custom ROMs for my edge.
Also I too have high RAM usage always but it doesn't make my phone any slower or laggier than past Bloatwiz phones. I am on 4.4.4 stock with a bunch of T Mobile stuff disabled.

Yeah I wonder if I should revert back to KitKat. My phone was great when I first got it, even when I had a whole heap of stuff installed. But maybe I'll wait for 5.1.1 first and see if that helps (the 915G still hadn't received 5.1.1 yet).

From what I have seen, you can no longer downgrade Android once you update to 5.1.1
Suffice it to say I will see if there is a way to stop my phone from auto updating itself. Kit Kat is working well for me and it retains all the native Edge features that made the Edge different.
I was able to get 6.5 hours screen time with my phone with location turned off and a full day of note taking, facebook, and music

6.5 hours?!? Holy crap, did you play any games at all? I usually last only around 3 hours but that's because I do play quite a lot of games. Anyway, I'm downgrading to 4.4.4 now, hopefully it'll stop acting up.

No. Not really. Like I said, I One Noted all day with my S pen, music, facebook alot and Chrome. I managed battery by using power saving mode, turning off location and turning off sync and turning it on every hour for about 5 minutes to get my emails in.
Today I did gaming and art on my Edge and got about 4 hours

So I've been back on stock 4.4.4 for a few days now. It is simply fantastic! The difference is huge! No problems what so ever now. I would like to stay on this for the life of my phone but I am a little concerned about the lack of security updates (such as Stagefright). What are your thoughts on this?
BTW, I noticed that Android system and kernel often takes up the majority of my battery percentage. Each by between 9-16%. Do you get this as well?

Yep, thats normal
And don't worry, i got the stagefright update on 4.4.4 and I was on MetroPCS lol. MetroPCS rides on T Mobile, but its just goes to illustrate that you have nothing to worry about. Glad you are enjoying your Note Edge again. Its a shame Samsung forgot they released this beast of a phone. Imagine this thing with the Note 5's but Edged version of the new TW. Nah, makes too much sense for consumers. Doesn't make sense if you are trying to get people to buy new phones.
Anyways just make sure you never upgrade to 5.1.1 That thing is a point of no return

I can't even begin to describe how happy I am with my phone right now. I remember a couple of months after I first got it, a friend of mine was watching me use it and commented on how snappy it was. Then more recently, not only did the sluggishness drive me crazy, I was watching others with envy, especially my girlfriend who is rocking my old Z1 Compact which still performs like a little rocket. Anyway, I am now back to loving the Note Edge again. I even prefer it over the new Notes, looks and all.
I just want to ask though, how did you manage to get the Stagefright update without updating the firmware? Software Update in the Settings won't allow me to update at all because "the operating system on my device has been modified in an unauthorised way" (I guess they're talking about the root) and Kies 3 tells me there's a new firmware available which I guess is 5.0.1 again (the N915G still doesn't have 5.1.1 as far as I know).

Um not sure how it works on Sprint or whoever you are on. On MetroPCS/TMobile,it just showed up as an update and updated itself automatically. I didn't actually know what it was till I googled it and people said it was stage fright
I'm in Europe but I bought my phone in Australia unlocked. Maybe I'll just get a virus scanner, that should solve any current and future security issues right?

Should. I really don't even know why you're scared. Do you get apps from anywhere besides Google Play Store?
Nah, I mean, some Amazon and Humble bundle apps but that's it. I'm not really that worried, just would prefer to be safe than sorry.

Should be fine. Not sure how things work with US carier based phones overseas but what I do know is KitKat got the update. I know I did and google says Kit Kat did

Okay, if I can be bothered, I might unroot my phone and see if I can get the update then, then root it again afterwards. Can't be bothered to do it any time soon though

Lol, exactly. I wouldn't be worried about your phone at all. Unless you do shady online stuff

Need reco's for a ROM to regain usefulness of my XOOM tablet

All,
Some time back, with the ongoing update of Google components, my Xoom tablet became virtually unusable due to the glacial response time. I lamented this fact as I did and still do think this is an awesome tablet and losing the usage was upsetting. I bought a Nexus 7 to replace it, which I use almost constantly, but there was always this thought in my mind of getting the Xoom going again.
Initially I tried the both the Lollipop and Marshmallow ROMs available in this forum, but frankly neither are "ready for prime time". There were and are serious functionality which makes both non-starters.
So, I installed OMNI ROM v4.4.4... on my Xoom tablet. Things seemed better for a while, but again the rot has set in and the response time of the tablet is glacial. Everything takes 30-60 seconds to respond and doing updates takes many minutes, not just a few.
I'm looking for options/suggestions/whatever on the possibility of bringing the tablet back to life.
If you have a Xoom tablet and it's still performing well for you, I would love to know details of the setup.
Thanks in advance
nt
Anyone?
I have also felt my daughter's Xoom getting slower in recent months. HOwever, the bigger issue has been all the Google Play Services error since early February. There may be good news for the google play services erros - someone named Just_Golem posted in the Google support forums that today's beta version of Google Play Services (version 10.5.42) may have resolved the Google Play Services issues. I'm hoping this is the case because I haven't bothered turning on my daughter's Xoom since early-Feb.
If the Google Play services error is indeed resolved, then I'm hoping some of the previous sluggishness may also be resolved (I'm running the Omni 4.4.4 rom). If not, it's mostly bearable.
I was using my Xoom with Omni 4.4.4 until very recently. Not only did Play stop working but Youtube got really really laggy so it went in the drawer never to come out again :'(
Not bad for a six year old device though, bought it back in 2011 and have used it almost daily since then. A proper high end quality tablet when it came out.
Holy crap. Latest update completely hosed my Xoom. Google Play Services repeatedly crashes.
WTF Google?
Now fixed. Latest beta version of Google Play Services fixes the crashing issue - look in other threads to find the link - https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...-xoom-10-1-wifi-mz604-crashing-t3554786/page4
