Disable Samsung KNOX For possible Downgrade to 4.3?

As I'm sure tons of you guys know, 4.4.2 is absolute crap. Battery life, lag, GPS issues. There is barely anything good about the update. I am sick and tired of having to charge my phone almost three times a day just because the update (that Samsung claimed in my tech support chat, is "well up to date".) that isn't going to get fixed ever again.
One of these horrible features is Samsung KNOX. Just to get more customers from businesses, Samsung KNOX is ultra secure, down to the very bootloader. Basically turning into Motorola with the no-downgrade thing. Basically making it so not even older custom ROMs will flash. (I haven't flashed a ROM yet. And I'll get to why.)
Now, on HTC devices I have used, If I hated the new update, all I needed to do was Flash an older stock rom, even use an RUU if I needed to. But this update is just plain awful. And thanks to KNOX, there is no way back.
So, I have a few questions to ask.
4.3 DID come with Samsung Knox, along with the Bootloader I believe, which in my eyes, is a very narrow tunnel, but it's there.
You can uninstall Samsung KNOX through the app (If you don't have the app in the drawer, there is a way to set it up anyways. Which I did. and I pressed uninstall KNOX, but the apps are still present on the phone.)
Does this mean the security is off? Or that the 0x0/0x1 flag is off?
Is there a way to root, flash a custom 4.3 ROM, and ODIN back to Stock 4.3?
Is there even a way to do anything development-like on the device without flipping that trigger?
Or can all of this be solved by fixing settings on 4.4.2, not needing to do this anyways?
(if anyone just wants to see how bad the battery is, I can upload Battery Manager screenshots and Gsam Shots as well.)
Thanks to anyone who can provide me with some tips and maybe solutions.

Once your on 4.4.2 you cannot downgrade. It's not even an option

I heard it was strictly because of the KNOX bootloader. Which led me to believe that if I somehow rooted without tripping the 0x1 trigger, removed knox, and then flashed 4.3 through odin, that I'd be able to get back to a system version that doesn't suck.

Alright. But is there any way I can root without tripping the 0x1? Or a way to just save battery on 4.4.2? I barely get 7 hours anymore when I got at least 18 on 4.3.

If your on 4.4.2 then no. If your on 4.3 yes. Only flash roms intended for the correct bootloader

Apps are always the biggest culprit of battery issues. If you don't already have it installed I high recommend GSAM battery monitor. That will give you an idea of what is killing the battery the quickest

If you have the app and the root companion for it then it should be pretty clear about which apps are in question
I also highly recommend an app called Wakelock detector (root)

I can't root unless I wanna tip the trigger. Which I don't wanna do. And I only have 2 apps, even tried safe mode, so its definitely the update itself.

If your on NE1 you can root but as far as I've read towelroot is the only option for rooting. As long as the kernel is before a certain date. I can't remember off hand what the date is however. It's hard remembering a log of this as I'm not locked down like most are

Okay. I really like this phone, I just can't handle the terrible battery life this update has given me. It's almost as bad as what I got on my HTC One M7 when I ran sense 7.. And that had BAD battery life. Wish I could flash and root without having to deal with the trigger.

I just tried safe mode and my battery drained the same amount.

I use mine as a phone since I had a droid ultra that broke, one problem could be the battery is brand new, and I heard new batteries need to be cycled 4 times at least. Or the update is just crap. And Samsung and Verizon doesn't care, so I'm as stuck as I can be as of now, I'm guessing.

Oh i agree. Samsung and VZW came together and truly ruined the S3. Then again they ruined more than a few phones

Yeah. Definitely. Would switch to T-Mobile but their coverage here is absolute crap. Do you know of any good extended batteries or long lasting ones between 2200 and 3000 miliamp hours?

I've never used one with this one so unfortunately I wouldn't be of much help with that. And yea TMobile coverage here is horrible as well.
I know a lot if people used the zero lemon battery which is a lot bigger

I'm giving up.. going stock.

Hey all,
Right now I am on CleanROM 1.5 and it runs good minus the pre 5.1.1 memory leak issues and pre samsung memory management issues.
Battery life was a solid 17 hours or more.
I am going to update this with my experience on memory management, battery life and anything else in case anyone else is wondering if it is worth making the switch.
To the people who are stock.. what are the recommendations ? Can I run any debloat scripts? Any threads on what is safe to de-bloat?

i went back to stock and it seems better than when i was running a rom. running 5.1.1 smoothly with no flaws, getting about a days worth of solid battery life and no problems with anything. i gave up on rooting samsung devices. just seems like there is to much to go through every time you want to do something and it doesn't seem like there is to much development for this device with the locked bootloader and all only so much can be done

I've been thinking about doing the same, think I might just do it tonight.

So here is what I did.. I ODIN'ed the 0E2 Tar and it did NOT wipe my device which I should it would. Then I let it upgrade to the latest 0G9. I wiped system cache via recovery and it seems okay.
Do you guys recommended a factory reset?
Also.. there is that debloater tool.. anyone have a list of good apps to debloat that is safe? I disabled some stuff but I am sure there is much more that can be done.

I factory reset personally, but download package disabler from the play store and it has a list to automatically debloat. And then you can go back enable anything that you did need.

Also, how did you guys back up your apps since Titanium won't work on non root devices.

I'm doing the same right now. I really liked clean rom light but if I was in my car I couldn't run Google Maps/Pandora and then go into messaging or gmail without one of those two apps shutting down. I'm hoping 5.1.1 will improve this.

Head over to the general section and download Odin and the tar file for OE2 and flash it is ongoing your pc. Then I used smart switch to upgrade. I didn't back up any apps so can't help you there I've never seen any decent back up apps for non root.

Don't think so. It starts out great every time I restore to stock but quickly degrades in performance. Since the last update, OG9, and having reset it yet again the other night, it is working somewhat better. Its not as laggy as before. I don't know maybe its all in my head. I just think that sometimes, the stuttering is just not making any sense. Google Plus lags and stutters, Gmail lags at times, Hangouts also, Firefox, Chrome,..... It works fine after a restore.

I had a S6 for 13 days and returned it and went back to my S4. The S6 was definitely a better device performance wise but I wasn't impressed enough with it and I could do everything on my S4 that I need to do just as well. I bought my S4 a year after it was released so it's not as old as some. I also went to stock on my S4 after being rooted since I had it and did a factory reset. Feels like I have a new phone. I'm going to wait and see what the S7 is going to be like.

I believe its not available for our phones yet. As far as I've heard, as of a couple weeks ago, the beta is for Nexus devices only.

It definitely sucks that Samsung has forgotten how special this phone is. That being said, I am contempt with 4.4.4. I don't think the Marshmellow update will be that good for the Edge but I could be wrong. I am hoping I am. Marshmellow with the Edge features integrated like it is in 4.4.4 with the same or better battery life is all I want

I can only see 6.0 being worse with all security crap built into this 5.1.1 over 4.4.4.

Two weeks ago my edge was acting retarded. I sent it back and got a refurbished one (because I refuse to get the new note 5 iPhone clone). My new edge shipped with 5.1.1 installed. Surprisingly I have no issues at all. No restarts or headaches. Fingers crossed. If T-Mobile gives us a crappy marshmallow version - if Samsung even remembers they made the phone - I will have no issues going back to kit Kat because i miss the camera button not being on the edge any longer.

I don't know if you can go back from 5.1.1 to 4.4.4 in your case ?

Yep, was the best place for it, felt more like a camera there and was easy to access.. On screen is just a ***** of a place to put it...

That was ultimately what made me go back to Kit Kat. I coulda dealt with my notifications popping up on screen every now and then but removing the shutter button from the Edge screen was too much. or someeone with moderate hands, the edge shutter made taking pics and selfies soo fricking easy
Do let us know if you are able to go down to 4.4.4. I would like to play around with some Note 5 Custom ROMs and be able to go back to 4.4.4 stock. Seems to be the best thing this phone ever got from Samsung.
Any word on how long your screen time is on 5.1.1? I only get about 5 hours on 4.4.4 stock. And yeah I also have a TMobile phone running on MetroPCS so basically TMobile

I am getting around four to four and a half hours of screen time at the moment. It does go down to about 4 on most occasions because I do a lot of YouTube. However I really don't care because I carry an extra battery - which I can't do with the note 5. With regards to going back to the KitKat version… below is a message that I got from one of the helpful subscribers on this board who help me out with this a while ago. Actually went back to KitKat about 7 months ago and I had it on my phone that I recently returned. I just have not put KitKat back on the new phone that I got last week I did not feel the need to do it at this point since I'm having no problems right now with the lollipop version that I have. If anything should happen in the next few months where I have to start all over again then I may do this process and go back to KitKat. It is very simple to do and I had no problems with the installation hopefully it works for you as well.

If you follow their instructions and your phone is taking more than 5 minutes to fully turn on (stuck on the T-Mobile logo/screen), you will need to wipe/factory reset your Note Edge. To do this, I pulled out my battery and started my phone in recovery mode (Hold volume up and the home button while turning on the phone). Wipe the cache/factory reset your device and your Note Edge should be up and running again. To make sure that I don't receive OTA updates from T-Mobile, I disabled the software update app.
Remember, when you go through this process, you will lose all pictures/docs/downloads/etc. on your phone. Backup what you need before downgrading.
Good luck with the downgrade. If all goes well, you will definitely enjoy everything that made the Note Edge unique.

Yeah, I really hated doing that, but the consistency of performance and firmware updates just can't be beat. Apple Pay is a pleasure to use. The fingerprint scanner is ultra fast. Very good battery life. Yada yada yada... the list goes on. I do miss the Edge's screen color and resolution. I also miss the wonderful alarm clock of the Edge. Perhaps when Marshmallow comes out for it, the new firmware, I hope, will fix all the issues that this past update broke.

What cpu does the note edge have?

I did not take a look at your comment until today. I was able to go back yo kit kay with the 5.0.1 version of lollipop. Today I tried to dod the same procedure as before and odin gave me a fail notice. I thought it was a debugging issue bit I cut it on and it still did not take. Sis you know why and if so is there a way around it? I should not have opened my big mouth about how smooth things were going. Now after the new update to 5.1.1 I get unsent texts and YouTube can't find a stream half the time. Ou want kit Kat back. FML.

Things are getting interesting.
It seems over at Yellow Bullet forums there's a gentleman who has been forced an upgrade to Marshmallow from Lollipop and it's killing his battery
He says he had auto updates turned off and it was still forced on him.
I understand he's a Verizon customer as well.

What the hell is wrong with my OnePlus One?

I've been running LiquidSmooth 3.2 (4.4.4) practically since I got the phone nearly a year ago. The last few months it's been getting henky; occasional random reboots, particularly when playing games, plus sometimes games would crash or simply freeze. Angry Birds 2 (crashes, restarts), Assassin's Creed Pirates (freezes), Kill Shot (crashes), etc. I've been meaning to try a 5.1 ROM, but have been lazy about it.
Then sometime between going to bed last night and waking up this morning, something happened. No apps were updated (I have that turned off). But it rebooted, and my wallpaper reverted to the LiquidSmooth stock wallpaper. It works fine until the screen locks, and it won't wake up again. The capactive keys light up (but don't vibrate like they should), but the screen doesn't respond. After the screen times out, sometimes I hear the "click" of it locking (I have the lock timeout set to 5 seconds) over and over and over. This in itself is odd, because it didn't make that click before (I guess I disabled that). The only way I can do anything is to reboot it and keep the screen on. And when I reboot, the wallpaper reverts, yet everything else (icons, widgets) remains as it was. I'm completely baffled, because, like I said, I did nothing other than turn the screen off and go to bed, and when I woke up, it was doing this crap.
So I sad "#$%@" it", I'll back everything up and try BlissPop 5.1.1. Downloaded this plus GApps. I go into TWRP (2.8.7.0), wipe everything but internal storage, try installing BlissPop, and it fails. I happen to have an older version, and that fails too. The only thing that flashes is LS 3.2, and after flashing that, it has all my apps like it did before, but Play Services continually crashes.
I'm not a novice to flashing. I tried upwards of 30 different ROMs on my Nexus 4. and never ran into this problem. However, these were all 4.4.4 ROMs (although Titanium back-ups originated from a 4.2.2 device), as is the LS version I've been using on my OnePlus One. Is there something I'm missing/not doing going from KK to LP? Do I need to revert to stock, update to official OTA, then install my chosen 5.1 ROM?
As I'm typing this, I've restored the TWRP back-up I did before trying this other stuff, and now the screen keeps showing the LS wallpaper (off-centered) and then the homescreen to the left (2 out of 5), and back and forth and back and forth, not responding to touch.

OK, I see now that there indeed is a firmware change needed to go from KK to LP. Not gonna try it tonight - too drunk for that. I'm off work Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll give it a try then. Come to think of it, I should try the official CM12s too, to see if the crashes/freezes happen, in which case it might be a hardware issue and I'll have to send it back. Meanwhile I've got LiquidSmooth up and running again. Games still crash though, and irritatingly, the Play Store crashes every time I try to type in a search (but not if I use voice).
I still would like to know WTF happened in the first place, but I suspect I'll never know.

If you wanna flash firmware using twrp you'll need to downgrade to 2.8.6.0 it's the only one that works without issues. Cos12.1 is a good choice but don't use the flash-all script (in fastboot) without backing up your phone, you'll end up wiping everything. Unless you're encrypted there's no need to use 2.8.7.0

Thank you. Perhaps that's why the "update.zip" batch restore I created in Titanium wouldn't flash.
I admit I'm no expert with the OPO. When I got it I flashed LiquidSmooth and never looked back, so I'm out of date and undereducated. I was planning on reading everything and getting caught up in the near future, since as soon as I've got the cash I'm picking up a Nexus 6 ($300 for 64gb on Amazon right now) and I was going to play around with LP/MM ROMs on my OPO, but then this crap happened ahead of schedule. Kinda ridiculous that a few years ago I was hesitant to get a smartphone because they were so "huge", and now my OPO isn't big enough anymore.

I was also considering getting a Nexus 6 some time ago but it isn't a big enough bump to justify switching when I could just keep using the OPO and end year wait for SD820 Nexus. TWRP is a pain for a lot of users and they experience a whole host of issues that they can't seem to understand, such as several in this section titled no sim/no network and sometimes proximity sensor issues are related to not being able to flash firmware while on TWRP 2.8.7.0. You're still on 4.4 so you're even more clueless ?. Only two things you need to be aware of Lollipop uses a new firmware (baseband 241) and latest CM13 uses a different firmware too (c7-00011)

I was so excited with the Nexus 6 was coming out...until they announced the price, so I got the OnePlus One. Now the the price is reasonable (a freaking bargain, IMO) at $250/300 brand new, I want to get one and maybe sell my OPO. I read eBooks during downtime at work and that extra bit of screen makes a huge difference (it did when I had a Note 3, and the Nexus 6 is even bigger), plus I read with white text and black background will work great with AMOLED. I also like playing some games, and the big screen and front-facing speakers will be perfect for that. Sure, the latest and greatest would be nice, but I can't afford that. My dream phone would be the rumored Xperia Z5 Ultra, but it'll likely cost $800-900.

Haven't heard of a Z5 Ultra but Sony is not my taste. I'll hold out for the Nexus at the end of this year and I'll probably buy it in 2017 (depends on finances) or get a 6P at bargain prices. I've also heard the Nexus 6 isn't great in battery life department so custom kernel will be a must
5.1.1 ROMs are rock stable right now so I'd suggest them over Marshmallow (numerous bugs at the moment but getting better every day).
The new modem is only if you want to run CM based ROMs which are the majority so you'd have to flash latest CM13 nightly first before flashing any other. If you use Omni or any ROM based off their source like Slimsaber or SAOSP etc they work with Lollipop firmware.

There have been rumors of a new Z Ultra for years ever since the first (and only) one. 6.44" screen, etc. I plan on getting a new tablet soon as well (Tab S 8.4 or Nexus Shield K1), but if they ever came out with a new Z Ultra (maybe they're waiting for the SD820), it'd be big enough to replace a tablet, yet still fit in my pocket. Maybe the Nexus 6 will suffice on its own.
Reviews I've read of the Nexus 6 say it has great battery life, but those are with scripts and can only simulate real-life usage. I'm not worried. Reading at work drains my batter the most, and with a white-on-black theme and AMOLED screen, I should be fine. I usually only play games at home, when it's plugged in anyway. Of course, I'll be playing around with custom kernels anyway. I never really bothered with them on my OPO (it already has smooth performance and great battery life), but probably will once I try 5.1 ROMs.

I'm a little conflicted with this as I actually like the v20. Who else is going to be returning the phone if we can't get a root method? I've tried to consider keeping it, even without, but I absolutely hate ads.
For those in the know, how is it looking? What are the prospects? I've kept up with the dev threads and I'm not sure how to judge this. I'm new to the LG dev scene.

What's even worse is that if there is something discovered it seems it will be very close or after the return period in my case. But I guess those are the cards!

the phone hasn't even been officially released yet. honestly you just need to relax a little. we know the bootloader can be unlocked on the t-mobile variant. so hopefully root will soon follow. but seriously you just need to give the devs some time to spend some time with the phone. with that being said even if they aren't able to get root i am still keeping my v20. i love it. way better than when i had the note 7

I'm not worked up. They have all the time in the world to work on it, no rush. I'm the one who is rushed. And I don't expect them to go any faster than they can. I'd be just fine in going back to my Note 5, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. It's nice to have a change. If I could help the devs I would.

Even if it doesnt get rooted, i will keep it, at least for 8 month or more. On ther other hand, i truly hope they manage to root not only Tmobile's variant (I own the tmobile's variant), but also at least 3 or 4 of the other variants. That way we can have more devs interested and joining the LG V20 Wagon . When a device's bootloader is unlocked only for 1 variant and locked for the others and if root is not achieved in the locked variants, then there are significantly less development on the phone, since only the variant able to be rooted will be truely open for developments, and the other devs in other variants would say "Meh" i skip it.

I would love root as well, I've been rooting my phones since the HTC 3G slide days. And along the way I've accumulated many apps that are a must have for me. That said, I think the features and functionality of this phone outweighs those must have apps. I could 'enjoy' this phone without root.
As far as if root with for sure be coming to this device? That's anyone's guess, it could take as long as a few months to acquire a real solution to root. There is also the development aspect of this to consider as well. While we will have people devoted to getting root and attempting to make ROM's/mods, Android N is brand new.
It's a toss up if we'll see root, than it's a question of how much development we'll see once a root solution has been found. So basically one need to ask themselves if attaining root solution is really necessary in keeping this phone. I personally see stock LG very pleasant to play with.

I agree, I would love to see an unlocked bootloader for all carriers. That is the primary reason I am with Tmobile. I can't stand being deprived simple filesystem access to my own device. But in this case, I'd be just fine with just root if the devs don't jump on board. I mean I love flashing custom roms, but this stock rom is great (for once). I just want adaway!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the Pixel has been rooted yet either. And since there are only two devices out now that have shipped with both Nougat, and the duplicated system partition for background updates, there remains quite of but of work to get SuperSU working.

I'm a little later than that. I think my first root was the HTC Evo. I agree that for once the stock experience here is pretty satisfying. I could deal with it, if I could only get rid of all those ads. I just can't do it. Pop ups and junk everywhere throughout the whole OS. I haven't seen an ad is so long I'm a little shell shocked.
I expected it to be a toss up with Android N. I knew this might happen, but we always hope for the best.

Heck yeah!! I need adaway! And slim pie, and greenify, and TITANIUM BACKUP (GOD! ) , and a couple of things more. also, i would love for lg to create many themes and then they can keep updating them and make them compatible with future devices so that it doesnt stop just in few months. Also to add more options to the second screen such as display notifications entirely one by one. I wonder if LG has a page to send suggestions and feeback . I would make LG V20 the greatest device ever LOL!

These are the days I wish I was an Android dev. This is the kind of challenge in programming that is usually fun. Brand new territory.

What are you going to get if this isn't able to be rooted? The options are few.

Yeah Titanium Backup would have been extremely helpful! I find that I didn't install half the backed up apps though, so that's something. I guess I didn't need a lot of that junk. LOL I'm usually first in on Viper4Android as well, but for once I don't think that it is a necessity. I haven't even played with themes yet. Thanks for reminding me. Second screen is surprisingly useful. I love flipping through songs on spotify with the screen off. I also love how you can see the full notification text there sometimes, instead of it being broken up line by line. I do find myself trying to pull down the drawer from there though, even when the phone is in landscape!

I'll probably just crawl back to my Note 5. The s-pen gets stuck sometimes, and the charge port is wonky, but it's like an old friend. The dev community for it seems to have dried up a bit though. But I'm ok using a solid daily driver rom with adaway and viper4android on that phone. I don't need to be a flashaholic anymore.

I couldnt install about 15 apps that required root, now i only have 35 apps (my apps, the others are system apps) Which is why my battery drain seems reasonable LOL i mean, im surprissed it last more than a day given the fact that many of my apps are constantly synchronizing and i leave gps on and do some camera shots and videos, and also am constantly turning it on and off to see notifications and all that, and play music. Today i did all that. And my battery is in 68% . I bet greenify could make it even better. BUT I NEED ADAWAY! Everytime i go to Chrome and go to some website that has many ads and pop-ups it annoys me that much. Im about to download another browser, I think firefox has the ability of addons in android . Also, there are some apps with ads too.

I'm using Firefox now myself. It does support several ad blocking addons and seems to work pretty well.

I don't want to count. But with more than a dozen albums downloaded from Spotify, all my apps and media, my storage space is great with the stock 64GB and no SD. It's kind of mind blowing. Same here with the battery as well. I've been using it all day, listening to music, surfing the web, texting, youtube, etc. I'm still at 72 percent. It beats the Note 5 for sure.

With not being able to block them system wide I'll have to start looking into things like this more. I love Firefox. It's all I use on PC. Great suggestion. Thanks!
