Need help-broken screeen- Htc or Asurion? - HTC Sensation

I did the unthinkable to my Pristine perfect Sensation 4g(rooted and s off and custom rom) I was teaching a tennis lesson (that is what I do) this morning and I reached into my pocket to pull out the phone and check the time and it fell to the court and cracked the screen. I was horrified. Got home and called T Mobile and they connected me to Asurion(after telling me it would be cheaper to go Asurion rather than HTC who would replace the screen. This is my first ever insurance claim(never cracked a screen or damaged a phone in over 17 years) Asurion started out saying they would ship a phone out and I would have it tomorrow. They then wanted to ask some questions which I said ok to . They asked about an address from over 22 years ago that the county had changed 3 times in the four years I lived there. I said not sure but I think it was choice 1. after a few other questions(gave me names to identify, although I have worked with over 3000 different students teaching tennis_) they said they could not identify me and I was on hold for 24 hours and an adjuster would be in touch. I have lived iin the same county for over 40 years. They refused to do anything but say adjuster will be in touch with you. Has anyone else had this hassle? I really need some advice would it be prudent to just call HTC and have the screen replaced(Tmobile says no)and what are the chances that Asurion will send a new phone and not a freaking refurb. Anyone went through this scenario? I had just rooted and got s off and installed a great rom and the device was running solid and super!!! Also would I suppose I would have to flash the stock recovery and stock rom. The phone still works(perhaps I should just keep it) just has a badly cracked screen. All info and advice and help is greatly appreciated.

I would think this would be easy.....Which is cheaper?

They are within 30.00 of each other and I have read that Asurion is sending out refurbs that are scratched etc. I am not sure if the phone was damaged beside the screen as the touchscreen is not as responsive as before. I guess it is a crap shoot either way. just want to hear from others who have gone the Asurion route.

I work as a att customer care rep and used to be a verizon tech support rep. I've felt a lot with asurion and 99% of the time they send out crap refurbs. Scratched, glitchey, ext. I would either search for a screen online and do it my self, find a phone repair center where I live or have htc do it.

Best buy protection plan, any users?

Just wondering if anyone else went in on this plan. For $10 a month the phone is covered and insured with no dedudtible for any reason (as long as you bring ima piece of the phone in. Also is covered for scratches or anything else. Anyone have this or have negative reasons on it? JW as I'm fairly skeptical even though I put in for it. (Cancel at any time)

I'm glad there are other people that brought this up. I have this too and fully intend to utilize it, as the damn platinum case has scratched my phone and I'm anal about that. They will surely lose money off me from this. I'm wondering how hard a replacement will be to get with the black tie protection. Also, once you make a claim, can you make another down the road or is it one and done?

I bought it. for $10 a month with no deductible I totally think it's worth it. and it's so much easier just bringing it in the store as opposed to having to send it to tmobile.
I'm glad you guys have utilized the plan. As a mobile manager for best buy i can assure you that your phone will be covered for repairs and accidental damage. Water damage is covered also. I recommend filing a claim for battery replacement right away since it is part of the coverage, so now you'll have an extra battery (which you only paid $10 for). Let me know if you guys got any questions.
I did too. I got the impression that the it would always be required to be sent out to see if it can be fixed or needs replacement. Not like the iPhone where they give a refurbished at the register. But, better than tmobiles warranty. Probably keep it no longer than 6 months.. diminishing returns and all that.

We usually give you a comparable loaner phone depending on which model you have. Obviously it won't be a high end android but it's better than nothing. Here's the loaner phone lineup in my store.
Sprint - Samsung Intercept, HTC Hero or LG Optimus
T Mobile - MyTouch Slide, LG Optimus T
At&T - HTC Aria
VZW - Moto Devour, Moto Droid

How do you do that?
When you make a claim they have to order a phone? As in it's done through the mail?
The warranty is nice but since I've already gone through 3 exchanges for defects, I'd be worried about getting another with banding, creased glass, or unresponsive back button if I can't actually see the phone in person.

Thanks greenarcher. I didn't know that.

I bought a SquareTrade warranty. $99 for 2 years, and you can get a refund anytime and the unused portion is refunded back to you.
anyone have horror stories with the Black Tie Protection plans?
Anymore info on the black tie plan? I've got my new accessories on order and I need to know if there's any stipulations with the warranty

Call the 800 number on your black tie protection brochure and request for a battery replacement. They will mail you the battery, no other steps needed. Verify your mailing address to be on the safe side.

You will have to visit a Best Buy store so you can get a loaner phone while your device is out for repair. We have a strict no lemon policy so if it's considered defective 3 times / or deemed unrepairable you are eligible for a replacement for the same phone or get credit towards a device of your choice.
looking for a horror story? right this way sir....
i had a problem with white spots on my screen and the usb port on the phone not charging. i took it into best buy so the could send it off for repair. what these guys are failing to tell you about the loaner phones is that a $150 deposit is required. anyhow, 2 weeks later i get a call that my phone is in. well, the screen issues weren't even addressed and while the usb port now charges, i can't transfer data using my pc. so i had it right back, while still in the store. they said it would have to be sent out again, but will be marked for escalation, which i'm told means it will be sent overnight, bumped up in que for immediate repair and sent back overnight. flash forward one week and i find out that my phone was sent through general mail, meaning it took the phone one week to arrive at the tech center. i asked why it wasn't overnighted. yesterday i got an email from a geek squad representative saying that while they apologize for the inconvienence, the store's request that my phone be escalated was denied. no reason given when asked why. so i am going to be without my phone for at least a month, which i am finding out is the norm when dealing with BB and black tie protection. my advice would be to avoid BB altogether.
if we dont opt in for the store insurance, do we call google or samsung if the phone breaks down from anything besides user wear?

Thats a little hard to do if you live in America and want a Nexus S. People often forget that stores are chains and that while service might be horrible at one location, it will be different at another. I used to work for BB (I quit because I hated the corporate morality towards their employees) but our store had amazing customer service which is still does (I bought my Nexus S there). However, the BB in the next city of sucks donkey balls. We very often had people coming from that BB into ours and telling us how incompetent we were until they realized we were different than the other store.
I've known a lot of people who have had great luck with black tie. And a few who had bad luck. Its people, not the company. If you have an issue with a location, complain to corporate or don't buy from that one and go to another.
Go to BB own website. Visit their community forums, especially the Best Buy & Geek Squad Policies. You will find that black tie protection and BB customer service is going down the drain at a record pace. Not every complaint is legitimate for sure, but notice that on not 1 single complaint does BB take responsibility for anything. It is always just a mistake, a error on someone else's part or it is beyond their control. Never a "whoops, sorry about that. Here, let us make that up to you."

Have you ever heard a corporation say that publicly? I saw and made sure every customer walked out happy when I worked there (again, I left because of corporates attitude towards us, the employee). I happily got the protection because I know the store to which I would be going and I know they will have my ass.

[Q] Black Tie Program on Broken Inspire

Ok so heres my situation... I bought the inspire from best buy about 20 days ago on an upgrade, I decided to not get their black tie plan because I did not cause any physical damage to my old captivate so I thought I would be alright to pass on it this time. Until today that is... I had the phone in my back pocket and when I sat down I must have applied some extra pressure to the front and in result the screen in mostly shattered.
So I have decided to come to you guys in search for a few solutions. I noticed that you can add the black tie on up to 30 days from the purchase of your phone but I am doubting whether or not I could convince them to put it on my phone even though the phone is already broken but I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any luck getting this plan on after the damage had been done?
I would hate to think the best buy would really be so ignorant as to make me keep a phone with a shattered screen for the remaining 2 years that is on my contract (granted it is my fault it broke), I would like to think they would help someone in my position out to keep me happy and wanting to return back to their stores.
If there is no chance for this, then what would you guys recommend I do to get this fixed for as little cost as possible.
THANKS!
I just took a captivate that wouldn't turn on and they replaced it with an inspire. So I think they're pretty good about exchanging phones. Unless I just got lucky haha

With a phone that unquestionably has suffered physical damage, I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to go that far in wanting to keep their customers happy.
Unless this "black tie" thing pretty much effectively says "sure, throw your phone off a cliff, drive over it with a semi, we want you happy, so we'll keep giving you phones," then I wouldn't get your hopes up.
But like Matt said, you got nothin' to lose and everything to gain at this point...
You never know what they will do. In December I upgraded to an Aria for $0.01, I did get the black tie coverage. There was a slight issue with the earspeaker and I took it somewhere local so I wouldn't be without my phone for a matter of weeks. Needles to say, that was a mistake. The repair place screwed it up. I took it to best buy and long story short, after sending it off for repair 4 times they have me an Inspire.
I think it is a very good thing to get to know the ppl that work in mobile and not be one of those customers they hate to see come into the store. They all knew me by my first name.lol They have me my choice of phones and I chose the Inspire and have never looked back!
BB its usually quite eager to please the customer, they know if you are happy with their mobile dept. you may buy your next tv there also.

Well, there's a teeny tiny bit of difference between a bad ear speaker and a "mostly shattered" screen, but, who knows...
brick it ..... That is the only solution O.O. I remember while back best buy told me if I bought their protection plan, I could walk out side drive my car over my phone bring it back in and get a new one/ fixed, never tested it though.
Obviously don't buy the Black Tie plan and then immediately whip the phone out of your pocket.... If it was me, I'd take the receipt in and say that I decided to go with the black tie plan after all. Then I'd take it in the next day, or the day after that. It might still look suspicious, but not as.
I took the black tie protection for my laptop and TV. Laptop got its hdd replaced twice, without a question. He opened it, took the old one out, put in the new one, and gave the old one back to me.
In my opinion, its worth the trouble/hassle for 3 years.
Thanks for your help and suggestions guys, I will hopefully go up there tomorrow and basiclly beg thats what I get for not adding it on when I got the phone, just my luck. Btw, I wasnt trying to say that they owed it to anyone to replace it, I was just saying would be a kind gesture to someone, who messed up. All they would have to do is change the screen then sell it refurbished for about 50dollars less than a new one.
Also, why do they allow you to add the black tie within the first 30 days but your excluded if you have already broken it then your not allowed to have it anymore. Just my thoughts on it, please pardon my ramblings..
Thanks again for taking the time to respond though!

Well that's actually encouraging for the op, then. Unless of course they were exaggerating for purposes of selling the program.
I guess the only thing that would concern me is the amount of time the op takes between signing up for the program, and "cashing" in on it, so to speak.
I also don't know if they would require physical inspection of the phone when signing up, if done after the initial sale, when of course the brand new phone is there in front of them...
Just a quick update, I took it in today and they were very kind and helping and because I had the protection plan on my old phone they said they could add it back and and say that the person who sold me the new phone had forgotten to transfer the plan to the new phone.
They told me to wait 2-3 before I bring it back in for repairs because they are usually not allowed to do this to an already broken phone but the manager gave the approval.
Just thought that I would poke back so anyone in this situation in the future will have a bit of hope. And that this is another reason why I continue to get my phones at best buy... great customer service (most of the time) and a protection plan that is too good to pass up.

Congrats. Great news for you.
Try not to shatter the screen on the next one, will ya?
And thanks for posting back. It's always good to hear how these things play out.
Put it this way its like buying a car with out "protection" and just that one day after the 30 days you run into a wall.. Take the car back and say hey I would like to get the protection plan. 99.99% they will ask let me see the car. Just as in example. Its a business. But I have the Black tie and the buy back on my phone because just in case I do drop it its cover, I had it on my last phone they sent it out for a repair go it back in like a week brand new could not even tell. Rather then going through att paying 5$s on it if it get stolen and having to pay a delectable. Heck I even got water on my phone and it was covered. So its worth it to me. On the phones think about its your MOBILE phone you have it on you all the time rather it be in your pocket in case or in case on a belt clip you always have that chance of missing your pocket and your phone slips. and BOOM broken screen. And then your like AHH!! FML! lol

I dont know about rapidly, but they have always been good about replacing my damaged phones. I went through 2 captivates (both took a swim) and they replaced them both, but the process took over 2 weeks. And on my last captivate they let me switch to the Inspire since the Captivate was out of stock.
Here is my update, I took it in a few days after I got the plan added and the guy who helped was very nice. They said that they were doing to do a rapid exchange (still not quite sure what that means but I think it is something along the lines of receiving a refurbished phone) and that they would get my "new" phone in within the next few days which is better than the 27 days I waited to receive my Captivate from being fixed a while back.
What sucks is that I am using my miserably slow iphone 3g until I get the new phone in.
One last question, if I am on the best buy reward zone silver level, does the extended 45 day return policy apply to cell phones? And if so, would I be able to exchange the refurbished inspire for the infuse and pay the difference even though they would have technically given me a refurbished phone?
Thanks!

[Q] NS Best Buy Repair...

I bought my Nexus S at Best Buy when it was free for AT&T last week and I was coxed into buying their Black Tie Protection Plan. I have to say that it was a great idea. However, I took my phone in, because I had a deep scratch in the screen and they told me it's a no go, and they wouldn't accept it for repair. The scratch was deep enough where I could feel it with my fingers... In the end, the phone had to be more impacted, like a cracked screen. They told me Zagg would make it look like new again... All of this while I was waiting for my Case Mate case in the mail...
So I went home and intentionally dropped my phone from two feet from the ground and it smashed the screen! I was "hopping" it would hold up a bit better than it did, but it did have a scratch in the screen. Went back to BB today and turned it in... unfortunately I had read terrible stories of BB repair turn around times, taking up to three weeks!!! So here I am waiting for a commencement email from BB regarding the repair...
Anyone else have experience with BB Black Tie Protection?
The speaker on my first nexus blew out and I also had the black tie protection. Instead of repairing mine they just approved me for junk out about a week later and i went into best buy and got a brand new one. The only way it's gonna take a terribly long time is if the repair center is bogged down or they are having trouble repairing the phone. I wouldn't worry about it too much as the typical time is usually gonna be no more than two weeks.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I have the black tie. Never did a repair though. however I did have to take my nexus in yesterday because of wonky touch buttons. They said I qualified for rapid exchange. They took my nexus, gave me an LG Optimus loaner, and said I'd h have a new nexus in 3 days. Can't beat that!
Sent from my LG-P509 using XDA App
I took mine in for repair because the screen started to lift up on the top right corner. They said it would be taken care of in 3 to 5 business days. That was four business days ago. Also on the Geek Squad tracking website it still shows my device only as being checked in. Luckily I still have my N1 as a backup phone.
I was with GeekSquad a long time ago and their Policy then was, that Under no circumstances would they cover screen scratches or cracks. I'm sure that still stands now.
3 weeks is normal if they send the phone to Samsung, at least it's normal for European electronic device (phones, laptops, tvs, etc) exchanges/repairs.
Because I work for Geeksquad, I can answer most questions reguarding BTP.
90% of the phones sold at BBY qualify for Rapid Exchange BTP, the remaining 10% are either standard repair (taking approx 3-4 weeks to send it in get it repaired and then shipped back, but they provide a loaner phone everytime.) or In-store exchange.
Rapid exchange is essentially a pre-repaired phone, aka refurb. Instead of waiting normal repair times you get refurbs normally within 3 business days.
As for the OP, whoever told you scratches were not covered is lieing to you. BTP covers everything except blatent abuse, IE smashing the phone infront of an employee or sticking it under a tire and driving over it on purpose(yes they really can tell). This also includes water damage. Next time they tell you its not covered, ask to speak to a manager.
Well, I should have posted this before cracking the screen. And I thought they told me BTP covered everything except lost or stolen! (So I wouldn't have to go through the pain of cracking my screen...) And the rapid exchange wouldn't work because I have an AT&T version, which I believe is sold out...
Now I have to pain through three weeks!!! Dang!
Thanks for the info.

Sorry, BTP was not around back then. I was a GeekSquad DA at launch; remained for two and a half years.

Replacement phone question.

I've had my shift since feb. Rooted since day one.
Phone works, keyboard works, speakers work, everything works. Battery seems to drain faster, but hell, its a year old and gets used extensively.
I have the $8 insurance thing through them since day one. Never once used it.
My phone has been dropped more times than a $10 crack whore. Dented, scratched, chipped, etc. But as I said, all works.
Do you guys think sprint would replace it with a new phone under the insurance plan? Has anyone done this? Does it have to be broken to be replaced? Does the deductable apply? Should I try to replace it in a sprint store, radio shack, or does it have to be done via phone/snailmail?
Sent from my PG06100 using xda premium
If the phone is still in good working order, cosmetic damage will not get you a replacement. Unless that damage is to the screen ( cracked screen ) . If your screen is just scratched they will not do it. As for a good place to try and possibly get a replacement. I would try the Sprint Authorized Repair CenterIt's where when I've had an issue with my phone It's been resolved every time. But experiences vary a lot from what I've heard.
Or if you really want a new phone just throw it on the floor till it does break and say someone tried stealing it and it fell in the middle of the street while a car ran over it
Find a friend at a sprint store and have them send you a REPLACEMENT. ASURION IS A LAST RESORT.
Thanks guys. I don't know if there's a repair center around here, but I'll check.
As far as the "accident", I've considered many options. Such as a drop in the potty during #2... and bringing it to the store in a bag with poo attached. Bet I wouldn't even have to unroot!!!
I will probably try the replacement path first. The salesman I used was a straight up guy, or seemed to be. I may take a ride up to huntsville this weekend and see if he still works there. Hopefully.
I guess I'm foolish for not knowing, but the insurance that comes from a true sprint store, is that assurion? I thought it was something they handled directly. I guess the confusion comes from different posts I've seen here. Didn't one of you guys break hinges a while back and get a new phone? What was your situation as far as sprint, insurance, etc.?
Sent from my PG06100 using xda premium
Well the cofusion usually comes from Sprint spliting up what they do " in house " , vs what they call an " insurance claim ". Although from my understanding if you do not have T.E.P. , then you cannot make an insurance claim. They do have guide lines, but I've seen different stores interperate them differently. The biggest thing IMO is that if they do not resolve the problem in house ( at the repair center / store ) then they try and make it an insurance claim. You then have to contact Insurian, that realy sucks. Because then you most times end up paying the deductable, which is now $100 .
my earpiece went out last saturday. i brought it to a repair center and they kept it for a few hours. They told me they couldn't fix it, so they ordered me a new one, but it was on backorder and didn't know when it will be in. Been calling everday and a no go.

updated reply from me: DO NOT REPLACE YOUR ORIGINAL PHONE IF THE ONLY PROBLEM IS COSMETIC DAMAGE.
I have swapped 3 Evo Shifts already. I speak from experience. I actually sent the last replacement back because the microphone did not work properly.

cracked screen, ugh!

Unfortunately after 3 days use, cracked screen. A fall on the cement with a case on it, but it was too much.
Sad day. Hopefully replacement parts might be available sóon
Same happened to me just now.
I dropped it (with the HTC case on), and the screen cracked.
The drop was about 1 meter :-/
I feel sick now...

Same for me, was out walking the dog and the lead pushed the phone out of my pocket. Landed on the top left corner I think at first glance was fine barely even a mark on the case but when I got home and put the phone down that there was a weird reflection and turned the screen on and saw a crack going a cross from top left to just over the power button.
Have contacted HTC to arrange a repair which is chareable as they seemingly void the warranty when the screen is cracked...better get warranty back on it after they fix it.
I was just about ready to sell my u11 thankfully still got it so using it now altho complete stock sucks lol and had relocked bootloader so no warning screen on boot sigh....
Hmm I contacted HTC (Netherlands), and they told me that it's not under warranty.
I'm going to call again on monday and try again!
The crack on my phone runs from the power button down to the left bottom side.

Warranty don't cover user fault. I mean, if the phone shipped damged than you can get it cover.

I have just got the quote for repair my screen, not the actual quote as they still can't give me a the proper ticket number etc.
The cost for me to ahve the screen replaced is £285 which is almost 50% of what I paid...not bad ehh. Think this will be my last HTC phone have had them for years but losing my phone and then a ridiculous repair cost is not good.

Well that price tag is the same with every other manufacturer. So it's something you would have had to deal with on a Sammy or OP as well... it's nothing ridiculous actually. That's why I took care to get mine insured as soon as it arrived.

Yeah but the best thing is that the phone been in the repair centre since the 13th and still haven't got the actual quote so I can't even pay it and they never got me the UPS return label so I also had to pay for the shipping back to the factory.
Been in touch with the support for every day for well over a week and still not actually got a proper ticket number that I can track and just keep getting a new ticket number that doesn't work plus mixing up the serial number.
So think this will be the last HTC phone for me as my U11 that was faulty when I got it also took weeks to get replaced as they kept saying they where going to try and repair it.

Well that's standard. Spar parts need to be delivered to the partners in the specific regions. Such things always take 4 - 6 weeks after the first devices shipped. Some manufacturers even need 8 to 10 weeks to provide the needed parts and prices.

so any news on spare parts, i allready ordered a new back for my 5 days old u12+ but one day after i ordered it i need allso a new display, it fell from about 30 cm height on the ground and i was shocked thatthe display broke alltough it was in the original case
lousy performance by htc after the tank of a phone htc 10
Can't believe it happened to me. My U12+ fell out of my pocket -- maybe three feet -- and shattered!! I'd been using it in the wild for just four days. Had it in the case that came with the phone. (The case I planned to use is arriving tomorrow.)
I'm horrified. This phone can't be dropped three feet?? It's defective by design.
Now, the aftermatch. I contacted HTC US and they said they wouldn't touch it because I have the Hong Kong variant. I'm supposed to coordinate with HTC Hong Kong. The repair shop up the street said they could fix it for $150 if I was willing to wait two weeks for parts, so I'm trying that.
Insult to injury, I thought I had insurance, but it doesn't kick in because T-Mobile hadn't registered the phone.
Will keep everyone posted about the repair. It would be great if there was a cheaper third-party option.

Good luck on the repair. I would see if a repair shop locally could repair it. I just had a sub par experience with the USA HTC repair department recently. I bricked my phone and decided to send it back to HTC to see if they could revive the phone. After 5 weeks they sent it back to me and it still was not working correctly. I decided to see if I could resolve the issue which I was able to. Thank goodness. I would have hated to send the phone back to HTC for nothing again.

Man! Make me nervous when reading this lol. The warranty on HTC device isn't up to it standard.

I'm sorry if I made you feel uneasy but I figure just wanted to give you a head's up on HTC repair service. I found another thread on this particular topic and it was disappointing to read all the issues customers had with HTC repair (USA).
next time if you have a warranty issue, you can try asking the HTC DACH contact on facebook/twitter... they are actually replying properly and maybe even able to help properly. it's sad to see so many bad things with USA repair as in Europe it's quite good...but also depends on if you are in contact with them per private message or just via e-mail... via private message on facebook it works out much better
Two and half weeks later, the local repair shop tells me they ordered the wrong part (probably for the U12 Life) and worse they are unable to source a U12+ replacement screen anywhere in the world. I can't find a place to buy one either, with the sole exception of an Indian supplier asking more than $300.
Does anyone know where one can buy a replacement screen? Or how much HTC charges for repair? If it's more than $200 I'm giving up on this.

Just happened to me, over the phone they quoted me $2-300, but it could be more or less after sending it in. I asked what is the point of a warranty and they said it's only software issues, and it doesn't cover user damages like cracked screens. Anyways, you and I are sinking in the same boat, with HTC not selling any screens themselves, or providing other alternatives besides their own repair center. Scam company at this point
HTC cracked screen repair update:
1. I sent HTC my U12+ to repair due to a cracked screen.
2. They email me asking for a credit card to charge for the repair ($200). They asked me to call them. They did not provide a phone number.
3. I called and they ultimately said someone will call me back in 24-48 hours to take payment because they can't take payment.
4. When asked how long it will take to repair once they have payment, he said they usually take 3 week from the time they receive the phone.
It's been 7+ weeks since they received the phone.
How do I get in touch with the Indian dude, I'll spend the 300 to look at the screen without cracks. Guess I got lucky if you call it that, everything works and the cracks aren't that bad but it is disconcerting that a screen can't be had anywhere.

A website called "cellspare" sells the screen, but it's $339. I made the resolve to wait two months and see if screens are cheaper.
