[Q] Are there any home launchers with hardware acceleration? (For phones) - General Questions and Answers

Anyone know of any existing home launchers with hardware acceleration? I know ADW and GO do not support hardware acceleration right?

I believe that SPB and Regina 3D use hardware acceleration.

Regina and spb feel slow while scrolling... they should be faster than go launcher or adw if they are hardware accelerated right?

Yeah, Regina feels a wee bit laggy for a HW accelerated launcher...

Bump, nothing else?

As someone who's looked into this as well, I don't believe there are any. The launcher on the newest Motorola skin (like on the Droid 3) "feels" like it might be hardware accelerated, but it's difficult to tell, and doesn't offer a stutter-free experience, just fancier animations and, again, a different "feel." I also believe the stock GB launcher uses hardware acceleration on some phones like the Nexus S, but again, it's hard to tell.
Unless you're using live wallpapers however, LauncherPro, GO Launcher EX, ADW Launcher EX, and other launchers that allow for ~55/60fps scrolling and are "well coded" should offer consistently responsive and smoothly animated performance.
I think it's a limitation in Android, and developers simply aren't able to access whatever they would need to in order to implement HW acceleration. I haven't been able to get any to comment on it.

^Launcher pro has the 3d app drawer but it feels like it only runs at 30fps or whatever.
However, I have found if you
1. set app drawer to 3d
2. set the fly-in effect for the app drawer to instant
3. now set it to "6" (or 7? Haven't tried, but I know 6 works)
4. now set it back to instant
then go to the app drawer, you'll get into a "buggy" state where the scrolling is BUTTER SMOOTH like it should be. Doesn't have any of the nasty hickups from the garbage collection running in the background on the non-3d-app drawer.

try launcher pro , no need hardwares .

Did you try Regina 3D Launcher?

Another bump, still looking for one.

The tw launcher. But only works for sgs 2.

i dont think so..

Is it part of the home launcher to have HW acceleration or is it the framework in which android is running that handles HW acceleration?.. I havent heard of apps that say they have hardware acceleration.. usually, just roms..

Ice Cream Sandwich has hw launcher. Maybe wait for devs to modify that one. Also launcher pro is being totally rewritten

I have heard of this LPP rewrite for many years. Don't think I will bother with them.

TW doesn't support scrolling widgets. I can't do without it.

Hardware acceleration at Launchers

Guys, I know NOTHING about any kind of programing, development or Android.
I am experiencing it for less than a month! (And I loved it)
The only downside from ipad2 (Yeah.. I said it) is feel of GUI.
I read a lot of xda and rooted my device, loaded clockwork, installed tiamat 1.4.4 and clocked it to 1.6 (interactive), and loaded Launcher pro.
So I think it is as far as I can get close to THAT feeling of smoothness.
In my last week of massive Googling I found out that at Android 3.x,
there is 2d hardware acceleration for apps that have the proper code. And GUI is not using it currently.
Is it possible to write down a Launcher app that have actual 2D Hardware Acceleration at GUI?

What is that?
I only tell you what I remember from heaps of reading I did..lots of them junk probably..
But it makes sense.
I can play a 3d game flawlessly and my icon jitter and stutter when I scroll from A screen to B screen?

Here it is..
Romain Guy wrote
" It is not turned on by default for compatibility reasons. Not 100% of the Canvas API is supported when turned on (although the missing parts are very few and rarely used) and there might be bugs in the new implementation. There are also new constraints (for instance if you try to draw a bitmap larger than the maximum OpenGL texture size, it will fail.)
The new rendering pipeline also uses native display lists for each View, which triggers bugs in some apps. For instance, if a View relies on its parent to invalidate() to redraw itself, it's a bug in the app, but it "works" without hardware acceleration. It will however not work with hardware acceleration on.
Our goal is to make hardware acceleration on by default as soon as possible but we do not want to break apps. That said, apps using standard views and APIs should work just fine."
Much more detailed at
hxxp://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/03/android-30-hardware-acceleration.html (cant post links yet)
I dont know If ADW ex or Pro launcher uses 2D_HWA.
But as far as i know both these apps are not optimized for honeycomb yet.
And i hope thats true. Couse if they are, that means thats all we can get from xoom on "Sliding icons" department.

I agree.....UI seems very laggy to me compared to my iPad 1....its not even close to being on the same level of the iPad 2.

Launcher Pro Lag

Running Sensation XE...
Does anyone have lag when switching between the home screens?
I have 5 screens all pretty much full with desktop visualizer widgets.
I realise this might be alot for the phone to handle, and the problem is not THAT bad, but it is something I would like to know more about solving.
First of all can anyone tell me if Launcher Pro is an 'Overlay' to Sense, then presumably sense is still running in the background?
So would deleting all the widgets I used to have when running sense help? (from the screens) or clearing sense data through settings-applications.

If you have launcher pro set as the default launcher the sense launcher should not still be running, things from sense however may still be running, like weather. I noticed lag with lp, adw seemed to be better. I actually prefer sense, though I'm in the minority for that. I would personally remove all widgets and icons from sense launcher to be on the safe side if you're not planning on using it.
Many Sense things remain running in the background even if you don't use it, including the Launcher and Rosie, even if you don't use them at all. Sense is part of the ROM, so really invasive.
If you're using Launcher Pro, and never Sense, you should flash a Non-Sense script to completly remove Sense (or freeze it with Titanium backup)
That's what I do=> No Sense script from Mike1986, Android Revolution HD thread, post 2. It's supposed to work with every ROM
It will already be really faster.
Then go into Launcher pro options, advanced options, memory usage:
most of the time, by default, memory usage is set to light or medium. With the Sensation, and all the free RAM we have, you should set it to high or maximum memory usage.
Once it done, using Launcher pro with 5 pages full of widgets (like mine) will be as smooth or smoother that Sense.
NOTE: Sense is optimized to handle correctly or both cores, Launcher Pro may take time to wake the second core. But if you force CPU1 online, it will fly!
(no no, it won 't kill your battery, you'll just always consume 192mhz more, but your device will suddenly be so smoother that you will reduce your max CPU clock, so in the whole, battery drain is the same for better overall performances)
I'm surprised no one else suggested you use a different launcher that's being attended to. The developer of Launcher Pro updated it quite often up until he released the Plus(paid) version, now he doesn't update at all. I know of the lag issue you're having, as I've had it myself. It's basically old code trying to run along side new code. I promise you if you choose a different launcher you won't run into this problem. I too loved Launcher Pro, but even the most beloved apps need a little maintenance once in awhile.
this is the first time ive heard tht launcherpro is lagging. it never lags on me. ive been using it since the original g1! no lag

I had the pro version on my three last android mobiles also. Never had a lag. I have all set to full speed in settings and it flies.
Never had a problem.

even on the stock rom, the day I had my Sensation, Launcher Pro was smoother than Sense, once well configured.
Now with custom ROMS and kernels, both are smooth

[POLL] Best Tablet Launcher? (OLD - Non ICS)

Simple poll for you guys, just want to know some pro's and con's of each launcher and how well each functions on the tablet.
I have tested most of these on my SGS II but have only been using the stock one on my Transformer.
SO what are you guys using?
Stock. Tried all of the other three and keep coming back to stock. Just seems so much cleaner and quicker.
ADW is smooth, but it's confusing with all it's options and settings. It took me some time to find the settings that work best for me. Definitely works for me as I haven't tried other launchers.

Agreed. The nontablet launchers are too odd on tablets and ADW Ex just seemed a little off.

Stock for me, hopefully with ICS we will get something like Nova Launcher, I love it on my Nexus, just ike stock with more options
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
ADWex for me, it has it's issues but once you get past them and merge it with
multi-picture live wall paper and simple text it's really quite nice. Just wish they would optimize it more for tablets.
ADW has way more options but with the latest Revolver build, I have started migrating back to stock (re aranging all my apps and stuff) because it uses up less memory and feels pretty damn smooth with default settings. Still, if you want to choose everything and run live wallpapers with little or no lag, ADW EX is a better launcher.
Im surprised more people dont use GO Launcher, its a great launcher, i use it on my SGS II
I use Go Launcher as well. I use it on my ZTE Warp, Herotab C8, and the TF101. I have used ADW and other launchers, but keep coming back to Go Launcher. It's just so versatile and easy to use. The addon's make it worthwhile also.
Stock
For me Stock on the Transformer seems very smooth and seamless, no reason to switch it up. However with other tablets I did like to use VTL
I have tried stock / pro launcher / go launcher / regina / spb shell 3d / adw ex
Out of all of the above i like adw ex it is the quickest most durable launcher i have used.
Sent from my tf running krakd warped an twisted 1544mhz Blades kernel
Add one for Stock, I have tried the others and they don't seem like they are meant for tablets. The only thing I miss is adjustable widgets. Other than that, stock seems like it just works. I do wish we had more options to manipulate the app drawer, and maybe a dock. Other than that....
Sent from a KRAKD out Tranny
Yeah i love the stock launcher but want more options like trebuchet or nova. any way to port these to honeycomb?
Stock!
Agree that all others are a bit confusing, but still, saw beautiful screen from people using them.
ADW ex is my choice for those that want to tweak.. it's not quite as smooth as the Stock Launcher, but its the best alternative.

Are you new to tweaking??
I have ADW EX as the default system launcher, apk in /system/app/ and killed the stock one its way way faster than stock and can be kept simple or really complex plus it doesnt seem to slow down as much with widgets unlike stock and is a smaller size launcher than stock.
Sent from my tf running krakd warped an twisted 1544mhz Blades kernel
The only tablet optimized launchers are Stock and ADW ex launcher, Go launcher, Launcher pro and the others are still designed for mobile phones. Mainly because they have that stupid dock that can't change orientation. At least ADW ex has the option to remove it and or make it better.
ADW EX Launcher is my choice at the moment. I've tried:
Stock - Not enough customization options available, especially the option to resize widgets
SPB 3D - Very impressive looking and much more suited for tablets than for phones (in my opinion), but didn't seem to work properly with MultiPicture Live Wallpapers. Can't seem to be able to make each screen with a different wallpaper. Gave up on it and went back to ADW EX.
Regina - Good, but not great and still has the same lag that I experienced when I tried it on my phone too.
So ADW EX seems to be my most successful. Any others out there that are just as friendly with customizations, and provide a smooth, mostly lag-free launcher experience???? If so, let me know...
I use iLauncher at the moment. Try using it with custom icons. Its simple, clean and superfast, except for the swipe to the "Search" page.
Greetings
I used ADWex for a while. I ended up uninstalling it trying to isolate an issue causing the system to lag. The lag went away, though I have no idea for sure if it was ADW or something else.
After going through a ton of different ADW configs, I found I just didn't have enough reasons to run it. What I really wanted was the expandable folders, and I found using the stock launcher with CircleLauncher widgets did a good job of bundling my icons into groups...
https://market.android.com/details?id=de.dbware.circlelauncher&hl=en
I'll probably stick with this until ICS comes out, and then see what is out there.

[Q] Hardware acceleration @ home screen?

Currently I am using the Weapon G2x 3.0_R1, with the latest GO Launcher. Ive realized that even at 1.4GHz (for testing purpose only, i normally run @ 1.1 or 1.2 max), I still lag with that "sphere" animation on homescreen, however in app drawer it is extremely smooth no matter what. The lag is especially worse with live wallpaper (even with other 2d animation it gets choppy)
Maybe its all the widgets I am running I dont know, but Ive seen the GPU power on this phone when I run GTA3 and all the other 3d games etc, it should be able to handle these simple 3d rendering from home screen scrolling......
So I am guessing the hardware acceleration isnt enabled by default....
Does anyone know how to enable it? I've only found the build.prop tweak on SGS2 forum which didnt help (tested, same choppy animation). Any veteran user can teach me how to tweak g2x so go launcher/weapong2x will optimize the rendering?
Thanks in advance.

Well first there's no full hardware acceleration on Weapon as that's just a GB ROM and not an ICS ROM. The lag you're experiencing is probably just due to Go Launchers coding. I don't think it was meant to be smooth with all those widgets plus a live wallpaper running. I use GO Launcher as well and love it, but I use the standard animations rather than the spherical ones.
Also, that build.prop tweak in the SSG2 forum was there because the GB SGS2 ROM actually has hardware acceleration. But that's only for that phone, that's why it didn't work for you.

Ahh....well do you happen to know any launcher with that sphere animation? That is basically the only thing I like about GO Launcher lol. I just want a launcher with that animation running at at least 50+ fps. I heard awd EX is very good though, any experience with that?

[UPDATED] GO Launcher HD v1.0 BETA 2

Hey guys just letting everyone know that the GO Dev Team has just released the beta for GO Launcher HD v1.0 -- a TABLET SPECIFIC version of their famous GO Launcher EX.
Check it out:
http://golauncher.goforandroid.com/2012/03/go-launcher-hd-v1-0-beta/
Fantastic. Exactly what I wanted the tablet version to be.
Issues:
6th folder created does not stay. The folder deletes and the icons are dumped to the all apps page.
Spelling mistake for the word "systme" When adding a widget. Should be "system".
Screen transition from portrait to landscape takes noticeably long time.
To much space between top of screen where google search is and first row of widgets only in portrait mode. Landscape is good.
Need ability to add more rows than 5. Even the custom option doesn't allow it.
I love it on my Epic and I am really liking this so far. Have not tried Apex but I have tried Nova on my phone and still found myself going back to Go.

Launcher
I have no issue with the default launcher....
Awesome, I tried it yesterday and found no bugs...using 10 folders without any problem

Installed many different launchers to find that the default still the winner. About this one in my opinion need lots of work. (lag, wallpaper resizing issue, widget will not added unless you restart the launcher). Am not new to go launcher its installed and working perfectly on my Samsung galaxy Tab since a while with no issue....
Again its just my opinion with Go launcher HD.

I'll have to try this out, but I've never liked Go Launcher over ADW or Launcher Pro for my phone, its always been slower and takes up more resources compared to those 2, but we'll see how it runs on the tablet
Edit - runs really nice on the tablet, thinking its going to be a keeper
It's very polished and good features so far. Once/if it has internal icon theming controls similar to ADW I will probably use it exclusively.
I noticed that sometimes when moving or resizing widgets the launcher gets stuck in edit mode.
Aside from that and a few other bugs, this will be my new default launcher once it is out of beta stage. The amount of features and the ease of adding icons, widgets, and folders is really great. I'm glad the decided to make a tablet version of their launcher.
brilliant launcher, haven't had a problem with it at all, landscape to portrait does take a while, haven't tried folders yet... the dock bar is something I've been looking forward to, looks good too.
For a first Beta this is running very smoothly. I assume in the near future they will add many more features and themes similar to Go Launcher EX. The Go Dev Team always have put out timely updates. One of my favorite features that I have only seen in Go Launcher is app drawer folders.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
A damn good start. I love the old Go Launcher but this new one is kind of nice. They need to fine tune the wallpaper application, also the window transitions are adequate but nowhere near what Nova launcher has done. I will say this, this is one of the nicest Betas I have used.
Just wanted to post that people should check back with the OP link. Version 1 Beta 2 is available.

They may be but go launcher is perfect with the folders like iPhone. Its also very quick to load.
Skang-a-Lang ROM: The Fascinate Continuum
Yeah nothing beats ICS-Stock-Launcher in Terms of Speed and smoothness. I currently just use the normal Go Launcher Ex with a minimalistic Theme and I like it ( I use very fancy screen transitions so you cant really notice the lag )
Does this Beta already support themes? Guess I will just give it a try, my TF101 is charging atm >_>
