I always have to wave my phone around with at least every boot like an idiot to calibrate the compass. My G2x I only had to calibrate once ever and it remained calibrated. With my Sensation it just seems the compass is always not calibrated properly and waving my phone around in figure 8s all the time is embarrassing.

No, you are not the only one. I have to do the figure 8 thing every time. Really embarrassing.

Funny you posted this as it told me to do this for the first time last night since I had the phone. Also, I don't like that my phone goes into landscape if I just set it down flat on a table.

I also have to re-calibrate. I find the 3-axis rotation method works well, and is maybe slightly less foolish looking in public than a big figure-8.

You rotate the phone smoothly around each of the 3 axes. Just found this video. The first part shows the 3 rotation orientations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECaINlTMNk0
I do it somewhat faster than he does, and without the Canadian accent.
Some documentation I read said 3 rotations along each axis, but based on that video it may not require that many. Trial and error should determine what works best on your phone.
Edit: Just found this video as well. Can't vouch for how well his technique works, but it's quite a bit simpler and quicker. I'll give it a shot next time I need to calibrate:

Yeah, its just deciding which one to go for
I had the same issue; googling around brought me to: http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/79713-compass-calibration-problem.html#post997382.
Did "temp" root, and followed the instructions - the name of the calibration data file on our phones is "AK8975Prms.ini".
The compass seems to be working properly now, for about a week, at least; but I readily admit: it is uncertain if deleting the mentioned file had anything to do with it, or it was just coincidental.

Is this still working for you or has anybody come up with another fix? It's extremely irritating to be using navigation and have it tell you to turn left, then as you're waiting at the light it says continue straight, make a u-turn, turn right, etc, all while not even moving...

Looks like my first use of a compass on my Inspire is in error. Heading north, it said I was going west. Heading east, it said I was going south. And I tried to use the maps to get a location and it wouldn't work. The GPS was locked on but the screen wouldn't display any map.
I will be returning this rascal.
This is due to the earth's magnetic feild getting ready to change the polarization in the year 2012!
On a serious note.. That is an interesting problem. By chance have you tried the gps scripts in the dev section ?

It voids the warranty and is quite complex.
It only voids the warranty while it is,rooted . It also, not quite as complex as you think. There have been quite a,few stock inspires that have natively had gps problems. rooting and using the gps scripts have fixed most problems. But if you dont want to root we wont hold that against you

Like mudknot stated, it isn't complex at all. You just need to.read a follow the directions to a T. Plus these two methods have been upgraded to make it easier for us. The phone can always be flash back to stock (making it seem that warranty wasn't voided at all).

Eh...went to the AT&T store and showed them what it was doing. However, as I experimented with it in-store, I noticed the compass became much more accurate as I held the phone flat...horizontal. That wasn't the case last night. It wasn't dead-on accurate. But good enough to give me a clue of the proper direction on a roadway. I certainly wouldn't use it for hiking or camping
The sales associate pulled out her Inspire, which she was having trouble with. She was going to download and install the same compass but couldn't. She borrowed another person's Inspire and installed the same compass. It did the exact same thing as mine. Holding the phone vertically, the compass was way off. Holding it horizontally, the compass was much closer to accurate.
I also was able to use the Google maps function within the city. My phone showed 4G data last night but likely wasn't receiving enough signal for the maps to display.
For the time being, I will be keeping the Inspire. In a year or so, when the warranty expires, I might delve into rooting. By the way, I did look at the rooting link and couldn't find any instructions other than maybe a video. What I saw looked pretty damn complex to me...I didn't look at the video, just was looking at the explanations and such in the main post of the thread.
Its more complex then you think, essentially it is pushing and flashing a downgraded rom and radio as well as the exploits after that its the same proccess as any other htc phone for the most part, these are just not as automated.

Hehe...in this case, it wasn't the Earth doing it. My HD2 with an SD card-based Android OS shows a perfectly oriented compass, horizontal and vertical. My iPhone, likewise, shows a perfect compass.
I just need to make sure I have my iPhone or HD2 with me when traveling.
Is this a hardware or software issue? It's pretty annoying. I can't scroll or type fast anymore because the screen can't keep up. If its a hardware issue I bet HTC will stay quiet about it, but if its software related I want it fixed ASAP. I absolutely can not use the phone like this.

I noticed this too, especially when typing.
I've never had any speed issues.... I text pretty fast and it's smooth as butter. Scrolling is especially great on mine....pages FLY up/down.
Just to let you know...that's not normal for the Sensation. It should be fast.... on properly working ones.... like mine
Do a factory reset AND a battery pull...if it still does it, there is a problem.
Make sure nothings slowing it down....bad app, launcher etc.
Love this phone...would never need anything faster
Good luck!

So far everyone been returning it, just in case it is a hardware problem. BUT! The one i got replacement for, is still sitting at my home (they failed to pick it up twice now). Out of interest, i pulled it out, started it and guess what-no issue at all, no matter how hard i tried to replicate it. I have done factory reset before and it didn't help. but factory reset + keeping it turned off for a week seemed to eliminate the problem. So i sort of look like software problem, but why initial factory reset didn't help then?
Guys, I had this problem yesterday and here's some observations.
- I had this problem after a long charge about 9 hours.
- I couldn't unlock in normal way. I was able to unlock only if I slide that ring from its left side when I wasnt touching the phone. Might be dislocation problem.
- I've tried with a different lockscreen app(GoTo Lockscreen) this problem didn't occur.
- Pulled out the battery for a few minutes then put it back like HTC said. Didn't seem to solve the problem. Then I've deleted other launchers and rebooted. That seemed to solve.
Mine has gone to the HTC service centre in the UK, due to this issue. Will report back as to what they do.
My gut feeling says software. The reason I say this is I also own a Thunderbolt which is running a port of the Shooter RUU and it runs absolutely buttery smooth. The Thunderbolt has 768mb of RAM, same as ours, but is using the 2nd gen snapdragon chipset (single core). So certainly its a far weaker device hardware wise but can run Sense 3.0 flawlessly.
I just wrote an article about the issue. If you guys could share it around I'd really appreciate it.

Yeah, good article. I'm on day 4, so "it" hasn't hit, yet. 2 questions: is the EVO S-Off out of the box, and is the one you tested rooted? I would guess not. Hoping against hope that when we're rooted and can get rid of the damn bloat, things will be majorly different. Second, what real-world benefit does Gingerbread actually provide over FroYo? I had thought FroYo was somehow JIT-optimized, but that GB was from the get go and would solve all of the world's problems? Can anyone explain exactly what the benefit of GB is, and whether it can/will not be a benefit until root? TIA...

after reading this I couldn't help but try my g2x out and here are my findings. stock unrooted here
my point of origin for my test was Arcturus which is part of the constellation bootes. these stars are left of planet Saturn.
I found it less seamless. I have tried these apps out long ago on g1 and g2, and a nexus 1 so I am definitely used to more fluid tracking of stars as I move around. I held my phone up right and side ways and looked frontwards, up, and down. seemed to twitch when I held it side ways more so and not at all when I looked directly up and directly down.
I hope this isn't redundant information and if this thread turns into a river of tears about g2x I will make a deal with Satan and redrum some fools
if I rind that after I reboot it is more fluid in the tracking I will say so in a post

So a few days ago I checked my phone at work, had been off the charger for 4 hours not used at all and it was dead. Battery draw was ~300ma the whole time. The next day I noticed my camera wasn't working. Ill get an error message(activity camera not responding). Sometimes ill attempt to open the app and nothing will happen. This was all on gingerbeast. So I wiped all data and reflashed GB. Camera still doesn't work and battery draw is insane. I've since tryed AR, virtuous and cm7. For the record I've wiped battery stats, tryed without SD and sim card. I've been unable to find the cause of the high draw, although I think its related to the camera. Tomorrow I'm going to try and unroot and return to fully stock. Sorry for the long post any help is appreciated.

If your camera isn't working on any freshly installed ROMs, you probably have a hardware problem. As a last resort, try going back to the stock ROM. If your camera is still bad, then you'll need to do a warranty exchange with AT&T. The camera issues may very well be causing your high battery drain.

From what I recall, the inspire is about 20 times harder to replace the screen/digitizer, because the thing it honestly slapped together.
@ OP Sad part is if you do wish to repair it your probably going to have to go through HTC as I had some lengthy conversations with ATT and had to threaten to cancel and report them to the BBB on face book before anyone actually wanted to help me. MY phone was to the point where the bottom right of the screen had lifted and I could press on the bottom center and here clicking noises.
Edit: Try downloading watch dog lite to see if any apps are causing the battery draw before you unroot, a little troubleshooting can go a long way .
I hope this is the right place to post this. I have owned and really loved my N7000 for several months now. As an ex-Palm user, the SPen stylus was a huge draw. I began to note, however, that over time the accuracy and the location of the floating pointer of my SPen began to drift. I searched and found many people complaining about this and saw multiple posts of "fixes" to try. I even found a paid app in the marketplace that claims to deal with this. I recalled that on my various Palm devices I occasionally had to re-run the touchscreen calibration routine and began to look for one of these thinking it should be built-in. But I could not find one that actually seemed to help.
After more digging I discovered a technique that seemed to work. Simply changing the SPen's dominant hand setting back and forth from my setting of Left to Right and back to Left again made a big difference. But doing so was inconvenient and really had to be done with some regularity to keep things really perfect. After more searching, I discovered how changing the SPen device's dominant hand (not the actual preference setting but seemingly communicating directly with the device) could be triggered by a script. However, this requires ROOT and some way to launch the script. I tired this and found it worked well.
So I decided to wrap this technique up in a little app - my first real Android app. It also requires ROOT and uses much the same technique as the script. You simply tap the app's icon and the quick change is performed - there is no UI. The app determines your current dominant hand setting from the preference file and then tells the device to switch to the opposite hand and back again. Nothing too big here but it seems to work for me (as well as some others who posted this "fix" idea).
I would think it good for this to be scheduled to run regularly (maybe once every .5 - 1 hour) so one never has to be bothered. But for now I haven't figured out how to do this and my guess is there are free apps available that can run this on a schedule. I was able to find such a program to run the script in this manner.
But I have not tested this on any but my own N7000. Will it work for others? Will it work on US carrier's versions of the Note? Will it work on the Note II or the new tablet that has an SPen? I am not sure and am hoping others out there will try this and let me know their findings and suggestions.
Thanks
EDIT: Please note that I have moved the APK file to the Google Play Store. Here is the link.

Also, I can no report that I have this running on a schedule using the Scheduling function of the excellent SManager app from the marketplace. I have been using that to run the onandroid script automatically to perform nightly backups. It can run executable programs as well as scripts. To run the .apk you use the android activity manager program (/system/bin/am) using the following command line:

Thanks, I will look into that. I am so new to this I kept things as simple as possible. A service would seem the right way to handle built-in scheduling. But I would also want to retain the tapping of the app icon so it can be run on command in case the user has set the interval too large and wants to reset things right now.

Feedback on GB or Jelly Bean?
I should have mentioned in my original post that I have tested this only on Stock Touchwiz ICS 4.0.4 using Hydracore 4.3 kernel. It would be helpful to know if this works and does its job well on other platforms. Lacking adequate hardware, I can think of no way to ascertain this except asking others to try and give me feedback. Other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Ok that's cool I'm glad I could help (even though it's miniscule lol). I can also say now that it's not just my imagination, because it actually does work. This morning I had some time to kill before a meeting so I was doodling it up. I'm really surprised that Samsung didn't intergrate an app like this, because you'd figure they'd recognize the precision drops over time by now. Anyway I'm definitely glad I found this man and once again I really appreciate your hard work!

hi
this app is a great idea! please update it with schechule... but i still have problems with landscape mode... there it's always off...
a fix for this would be soooo nice!
thx for youre work!
App runs on paranoid Android.
Not sure about tw roms but on cm/pa and aokp roms pointer icon is always slightly towards top left of screen. If phone is rotated, rather than point to the 'new' top left it is still pointing at the volume up button.
To fix landscape we need someone to work out how to convince the input that the screen is 1280 x 800 instead of 800 x 1280, this (I think) means the spen input would need to recalibrate every time your screen rotates eating batteries for breakfast.
Right handed use landscape where bottom of phone moves right (anticlockwise) you can still see it its just off. If you swing bottom of phone left pointer hides behind spen

Thanks for the info and response. Can you please describe: (a) does my app help when in portrait mode? and (b) can you describe how the pointer is off when you are in landscape (which direction and by how much)? and (c) when you return to portrait mode does the pointer seem right?

PS - I think I read somewhere that toggling auto-rotate on/off may help "fix" the S-Pen and I wonder if this will work for you?
Cheers!

Thanks for your info. Good to know that the app doesn't crash on Paranoid. My phone is TW ICS 4.0.4 with Hydracore 4.3 kernel. On my phone I do not see the issue with landscape mode that you and phasA describe. I can say that I really wasn't liking the way auto-rotate was working on my phone (sometimes just too sensitive). So I have installed this app which basically makes me confirm that I want to rotate. Perhaps this has something to do with my I am not seeing this issue?
I still didnt get the use of this app, sorry i am not at all rude but how can changing dominant hands reset the pointer settings. I mean what does it has to do with resetting the pen settings???
