Hey,
I'm sure this has been posted 1,000 times, but I am wondering a couple things about upgrading from my current Hermes. It is really buggy and seems to be failing(the LCD has problems, etc)
Should I wait for the HTC Touch Pro? Money isn't really a factor for me, so I don't mind a steep price on a phone, but with mine currently starting to fail, I would love to get a new one before school starts in mid-August(I surf the net all day in class ).
So what are my best options from now or before Mid-August if anything is coming out that soon? Should I just go for the Kaiser?
Are there any other forums? I keep posting my problem with my phone, and I have posted asking what I can upgrade since there is no one to help with the problem, and I also don't get anything helpful there. I try to look it up, but most of the websites are geared towards what is best for kids and casual users instead of people looking for better devices that can be useful
I mean it'd be helpful if you were in the right subsection
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=254
this is for the HTC Hermes/8525, they should help you there. if not then check the wiki. thanks.
Yes, I have posted there, and no replies to my problem(posted twice, months apart) or my upgrading help really.
Thanks anyways man, I just thought this section may have some traffic and/or help available, my bad for posting it in the wrong section
Guys,
I've been following the Epson and Novatek threads and it looks like good progress is being made on the fps cap. After playing with my friends Droid Incredible and seeing how silky smooth swiping and games are compared to my Evo, and with lack of 4G in my area, I am considering canceling and returning my Evo in 2 days while I am within the 30 day window. I'm sure other non-devs are in this boat and would really appreciate knowing what confidence level the devs have that they can break the 30fps cap AND keep the camera working once the appropriate drivers/source is out there. In other words, based on the latest information does it appear that the hardware is able, but the software isn't willing (yet)?
FWIW, I have a 003 w/Novatek and it has otherwise been pretty solid. But without 4G, and with this irritation, it is worth it to me to return the device and try Sprint again in 3-6 months if the alternative is to get "stuck" with a device with these limits. As an original G1 owner I know how crappy it can be to have a limitation that caps the capability of an otherwise very capable device (negligible onboard memory was a problem from day 1).
Thanks for helping me and others who may have the same question.

One has nothing to do with the other. The camera will be working once HTC releases the source, and it appears they have broken the cap and are probably gonna tweak it little by little.
People stop posting these threads!
Also, yes. It will be fixed and still have camera, but it won't be until we get the real HTC source. There is nothing devs here can do to make them release it faster. It's entirely up to them, but once we get it then we can have a fully working kernel along with fully working AOSP builds.
others may have the same question, but they:
1. read forum rules
2. have common sense
3. use the search button
Admin, move this thread to Q&A please.
Should be in the Q&A
The only reason the camera breaks is because we have to use a custom kernel to remove the FPS cap(and overclock). The custom kernel doesn't have the drivers for the camera because HTC is currently breaking the law and not releasing the source code, once that is released many amazing things will happen with this phone, including but not limited to the cap being removed with the camera and other things working.
HTC's track record on this source code release issue is starting to become fairly worrisome. That said. Yes this should be in the Q&A but at the same time I think you guys need to chill out a bit. He's not just posting another one of those threads, and this one is worded concisely enough that should someone choose to answer it, maaaaybe they could just sticky it over in the Q&A forum and be done with it.
Just saying, reserve the smackdowns for the obvious infractions of laziness.
Oh and as much as we all say use the search, I think it is worth noting that the forums search feature sucks and often still leaves you hooting through fifty pages of the same post just being quoted by someone else but still showing up as it's own result.
I cant help but feel like the fact that with SO many threads going way over the 300 post mark, eventually someone is going to need to write/use something better than off the shelf forum software, or we will forever be stuck tilting at windmills in regards to the "use the search" issue.

Thanks for the consideration, Alcaron. I always love how the douches, most of whom have been here for about 3 years LESS than I have, scream "SEARCH" and "MOVE THIS TO Q&A" when, as you noted, the search here has its limitations and moving this to Q&A will GUARANTEE it won't get noticed and another person will follow right behind and ask the same question. Truth is, it is a legit question for devs and usually the crybabies aren't even qualified to answer dev questions anyway.
As you stated, HTC's delay in releasing the source is unacceptable and will probably cost them a RMA thanks to the censors who would rather squelch this discussion. Too bad, especially considering just how compelling the device would be if HTC would support the true wizards with this info.
Mods, move this, leave it, whatever you like, but I expect others want to understand what ffolkes and his peers think and it will be asked again.
The issue is posting this in the dev section, instead of the Q&A. That's what's inexcusable. Yes, the search function is subpar, but dammit at least re-post in the right section.
This keeps getting called "trivial" but the fact of the matter is when you see it 100 different times, the small annoyances add up to 1 big episode of rage! It's against the forum rules for a reason. Abide by them or leave.

just ask yourself these questions.
does this thread contribute to development for the evo?
no. it's a guy who is telling us "thanks for your work, but i'm returning it cause there's too many problems. though i know you guys'll get it right eventually". look, there's nothing wrong with the post, just please put it in the right section!

I just felt everyone should read this twice, my advice is wait it out.
The EVO even without 4G is superior to the Incredible in my opinion and we will have it fully unleashed very soon.

ROTFLMAO. "Abide by them or leave." Whatever, dude. Maybe you should take a chill pill - or leave yourself.
Again, at the end of the day if you can't handle these types of questions you are in for a lifetime of pain. This isn't a "how do I root my phone" question. This is a question, that in my opinion at least (and guess what, that matters at least as much as yours) should be here for two reasons:
1. it may actually get looked at by devs (versus in general) and
2. it is a legit dev question
Most of the 30fps threads have, at the moment, coalesced around three topics:
1. Which VPA settings give you the most FPS
2. Do we think the MDDI buffer has some hardware cap that is being fooled by some sort of RGB to MDDI bridge which is now either a) working great or b) a placebo effect, depending upon who you believe
3. How the various patches are effecting various hardware rev/panel combinations
At this point, without the source and the possibility of it not being released for months (see Hero), and based upon the discussions, I think it will be at least 3 months until we see a working 50-60fps solution, camera, and HDMI port solution - but I was giving devs a chance to agree or even disagree amongst themselves and to explain their position.
This is the last post I'll waste any time addressing the douches, if someone wants to contribute to the answer feel free to do so, and if you want to complain about the post then no one but the mods can stop you, but i won't perpetuate it.
You should return the device and get something else.
Wow. That all took an unexpected turn.
It's true that dev was the wrong spot to post, but oh well, get over it, they'll never learn..
Id keep it. Well I am, unless news of the epic comes verrrry quick.
Even then. Hard decision.
If you're willing to wait for a truly rewarding phone experience then hold out.

On the contrary, the custom kernel does have the drivers for the camera--both cameras actually. I spent about an hour working on the camera last night, and it appears the problem isn't really with the drivers, but we probably have the wrong GPIO tables for it, since we're using the same ones the Incredible uses. I'm not sure how we can get the right tables without the official source, but me and maejrep have been working on it.
We'll update the custom kernel thread if it gets fixed.

Awesome Cicatrize, this type of info is exactly what I was looking for.....best of luck to you.
Ugh, the "something about my evo makes me mad so I'm going to get an <other phone>," threads get so old. Do it already, we don't need to hear about it. I personally like my EVO, I like being on Sprint with upgrades every year and good coverage and inexpensive monthly fees ($10 premium data addon be damned,) and I sure as heck know I don't want to lack those things and get tied into a 2-year contract with a $375 termination fee on Verizon or AT&T at the same time that said companies have started to tier data usage.
I am not sure where to go to ask this but can we get some mod attention in threads. It is hard for a newb or someone to come into the dev section and weed through 100+ pages of fluff and stuff to try and figure out what's up with a ROM. Can we please get the mods to start modding?...a lot of stuff in a these threads can be removed and maybe consolidated. I must say I am getting frustrated trying to read threads to see if any of the ROMs have FFC capability in yahoo because it is not a major issue to some of the devs and it is one of the major needs I have so I try to read through threads to see if it was mentioned only to go page after page of nothing but chatting....
I am not trying to step on any toes or anything just asking if we can get some garbage clearing around the boards...
case in point 5 pages on a thread before a ROM was even posted minutes ago...I love that we hav an active community but...come on.
The mods work for free, do a decent job of removing things that actually violate XDA's ToS and there is a pretty kick ass search feature built in to the site. What may be idle banter and useless thread clutter to you is probably important, helpful information to the people involved in those topics. How many people see people discussing FFC issues or IM service issues and consider it a waste of thread space?
Not trying to piss in your puddle or nothin, but I like that everyone can discuss what they want and our voices aren't silenced arbitrarily by unpaid moderators.★

While I see your point....tell me how a person new to the boards can read through 200+ pages for one ROM?..search only goes so far...the development board is supposed to be about the development of a ROM not talk back and forth about a coming soon or mindless banter from several weeks ago just adding to page after page of nothing related to the ROM...like I said before glad we have an active community but would be nice at some point they work to make the threads little more manageable for readers. Some might consider it a waste of space but to be fair it is an issue related to the ROM not "are you gonna get that uploaded today?"
fair enough, though you could have made a backup, flashed a rom, checked yahoo, and restored in the amount of time it took you to make these posts, let alone read through several pages of a thread.
Well true that...fair enough although I am not weeding through the threads just looking for that and I also start at the end and work backwards...the mods do do it for free here but they took that upon themselves...
Easy steps for your problem
1. Go back to stock ROM
2. Unroot your phone
This should save you alot of time spent reading unecessary threads (such as this one)

Okay i'm going to bust some chops here.
1) The development community here at XDA has always been one of the top notch communities on the known planet. The devs around here do an amazing job. and i applaud them. they have done nothing less then amazing work, and they only thing they ask for is a "thanks" or a small donation... and rarely ask for money.
2) they have always started one thread per ROM design. Look at TeamRoyal they have several different ROM styles and several different threads. They use these threads as feedback. They read through them to see what people are saying so they can make changes accordingly. The one really long thread, will do more good for them then starting a new one per new ROM release.
3) the [OP] will 9 out of 10 times will include a log to indicate what has been fixed in the first post. We can quickly and easily use this to see what problems have been fixed. So reading the 200 pages will tend to be boring and pointless. But to the one person who sees __________ as being a problem can voice their opinion and see if anyone has a known fix for it.
4) if you are reading page one through x on a ROM that has 8 different updates you have no one to blame but your self. the earlier the post the lower version of the ROM it's related to. You ought to look for when the post was edited then go to the back back and start reading. And go backwards until you hit the date and time which the [OP] was edited. It's not rocket science.

I lul'd with heartiness.
I see the OP's POV... But as a modder of these phones you kinda have to sit there and read hundreds of pages. All of this stuff is trial and error so i think what you see as useless clutter is normal and needed so that the developers can perfect these ROMs. Not to be a **** or anything but all this hacking isn't four everyone. And if you don't have the patience to sit and read through pages of stuff then he or she shouldn't be getting into all of this.

Towards the bottom of every forum page, you will see a list of the moderators assigned to the forum. If you see some things out of place, please take a few moments to send a PM requesting a cleanup.
I completely agree with the OP. There are many useless posts on every single thread (sometimes to just say one word + 10char... That is not helpful to anyone at all, and neither are posts to just say "Thanks".. That's what the damn Thanks buttons are for), but it's pointless voicing your thoughts on this.. You will simply get bashed, told to go elsewhere or told that you don't appreciate the community's work.
I've learned that this is just one of those things you have to let go and just put up with it.
Not trying to get into a pissing match here, just pointing out that in the same sense of hitting the damn thanks button, moderators are listed and a PM system is in place. Posting a thread invites general discussion. If the problem truly exists with the moderators it should be privately discussed with them. By its very nature a thread in the general section is either a shot at the moderators or a shot at the community, neither of which are fair imo.

I agree that often there is clutter and light-hearted banter stuck in the middle of otherwise-technical info. But you know, be careful what you wish for. If it's annoying or problematic to wade through a 200+ page thread, look at the flipside of the coin. I've been in many forums where, for one reason or another, problems and discord started to reign, with everyone having a problem with everything, and then after a while, they WISHED they could have threads with 200+ pages, since 3/4 of the people left in frustration.
As for the same info being in different places, other than some automatic, intelligent, self healing mindmap plugin to the forum software being available, this is what it is. Think of it as a magazine. Some ads, some fluff, but lots of great articles. Leaf through it, and enjoy.
Reading all those pages on development and rom threads have made it so I don't have to ask another repeated question and annoy our devs to the point of quiting. They make you more self sufficient with your phone and modding it.

It's funny
You know its funny that this thread is asking to get other threads cleaned up. I'm just posting this comment to try and reach my 10 comments so I can post in the developer section. This is ****ing bull****. What a horrible policy.
You could always ask your questions in Q&A. Or post in General about whatever it is you wish to say. It's 10 posts, how much frustration can there possibly be.

I agree with you!! Nothing was handed to me on a silver platter. I did my own research and didnt ask for much help in return!! Yes the threads will have some clutter, Just seems like people are a little lazy these days and want the fast anser, or to have it done for them... Just Sayin
Ok............
Its generally not the done thing to go into a dev thread and start deleting posts unless they are seriously off topic.
In which case the dev would probably have told the offender to stfu anyway....
If however, there is a real need for a thread to be cleaned then have a look for your relevant mod at the foot of the page and drop us a pm.
Seeing a thread like this feels a little like a slap in the face to be honest. As mentioned we do this for free, in our spare time. I haven't been through here for a few days as I've been busy outside of XDA so I apologise if a few [Q]'s have built up in general or development but I'd like to think that any serious matters would have been reported.....
Also, it's possible to search an individual thread, saves you reading all 200 pages....
Not that 200 is a lot for a ROM thread

The only thread similar to this was last posted in February 2008. No doubt I would get no end of hell for resurrecting an old post if it were unlocked, and I'll probably also get no end of hell for starting a post about something that's already been addressed. I'm a "n00b" so I can't win.
Which is what brings me here. The treatment of and policy toward those of us who are not new accounts but new to POSTING is ridiculous. I understand there's probably no easy way to separate out people that have been searching and lurking for over a year vs. someone that just started an account, but it should be done.
I haven't had the need to post in the year or more that I have been coming here because I am good at using a search engine. Most of my questions are in fact already answered. Today, I found an obnoxious post where someone was having a problem and instead of posting the solution, simply posted that "they fixed it." without sharing with the class. Nice. So I was wanting to just ask if he could share his information. That's it.
DENIED. I've been on here a long time, I've been supporting mobile devices since EDGE was the fastest connection you could get and I actually do know my asshole from a hole in the ground believe it or not.
You do realize, mods, that you probably get a hell of a lot of awfully bad information posted by "new" users just for the sake of padding post counts in your attempt to block stupid people? Instead of one or two lame posts of legitimate questions that may have already been asked, you probably get 5-10 garbage posts from people like me trying to get up to 10 so they can get to asking their damned question.
And Five minutes in between? Of course I'm pissed. That's another 45 minutes of my life wasted - at least. That assumes I just copy and paste all this into 8 other posts. But because I'm cursed with this stupid drive to fix things I will probably actually spend the extra time to seek out questions I can answer. Tack on another 30 minutes for that. Thanks guys. Your policy is condescending and pointless.
Let the shi*talking and flaming begin now. Die-hard defenders and fanboys first of course. Tell me why I'm wrong. Please. I need a good laugh. (yes, I am a cynical bastard, thanks)
Allow me to be the first to grab my pitchfork!
You have some perfectly rational points and I'd be surprised if anyone actually gave you the hell you anticipate. Its like you said though, no easy solution to seperate the good eggs from the bad ones. So the 10 post count barrier keeps the development sections clean... But at what cost?
I dont actually intend on using my pitchfork. Just thought I'd try to make people envision someone holding a pitchfork as they read my post.

thread closed
Something does need to be done about the dev threads.
But what?... There must be some sort of cutoff...
thanks (people that contribute?)
posts (people that just post alot)
Combination of thanks and posts?
OP approval (make more work for the op)
Mod approval (make more work for the mod)
Number of searches
So what do you do.....
Set the dev thread to read only unless approved (possibility but it makes more work for some)
Block access completly - Gotta earn your stripes at the mods discretion
Some sort of tiered access levels. Earned or given by mods (keep in mind Dev's do just pop in and say "Hey i was bored on saturday so i started to port ICS to my harmony remote control. It boots and i'm stuck trying to get x working. Got any ideas?")
I'm sure alot of the mods do get pissed when someone posts "**** i borked my phone (or my tab) help me" or " it wont boot" or any of the bazillion other common problems that could be solved by looking 2 posts up. I know i do....
Also on a side note tapatalk does not refresh automatically. So some stupid posts are due to that (guilty). Oh and hey i'm not claiming to be all high and mighty about my posts. When i bought my Transformer in november and spent like 3 months searching and searching and reading and reading and searching and reading. I only posted something when i actually had enough knowledge to ask a intelligent question. That being said I am not 16 with a cool new andrioid phone.
So ya .... What do you do.... People are people... Some thrive on conflict.... Some are stupid... Some are lazy.... Some are a pain in the ass... Some are helpful... Some are totally hilarious... Some love ponies... Some are insanely brilliant...
Do we need ALL these people posting in the Dev thread ..... NO....
(ps IMO XDA developers seems to me like a place to develop your knowledge.... just sayin)
I do like it here and i have no problems with any of the mods. Just up for a bit of a continuation of a closed thread.
What do you think is the best way to deal with this? (maybe some good will come of this)
(ps this is not a question thread this is a discussion opener)
I agree that there's a lot of stupid unintelligent questions from people who just havent done enough research and are too lazy. There's the 10 post rule (which I'm on the wrong side of currently) which helps to keep some of it out. I personally have been using xda for over a year and it has answered all my questions and I just recently made an account because I haven't needed to ask new questions.
p.s. i was a 16 year old with a new android phone.... lol
