Random WiFi Drops - HTC Sensation

Hey guys.
I've recently bought my HTC Sensation (a good month ago now) and so far, its a brilliant phone.
However, there is one issue thats bugging me. The WiFi on my Sensation seems to keep dropping when the screen is turned off. The only workaround is to keep the device awake.
I've set the WiFi Sleep Mode to Never, still doesn't change it.
I don't think any of my programs are doing it. I used to have connection checker installed but I've since deleted it.
I'm sure this might be the fact that the phones from Asia, and would be running Asian Radio versions of the Radio drivers? I'm probably wrong but I would love someone to tell me what the hells going on!
Thanks in advance!

Having similar problems but with my HTC Dream. It's usually after it's on sleep mode for a while. Temporary fix: Uncheck wifi then turn it back on again... I'm too trying to look for a permanent fix. It's starting to get very irritating.

When your screen is off for a while, do you still receive emails/updates etc?

If you're talking to me... then no i don't receive emails.. Although it seems that the problem stopped after I switched the ROM from cyanogen to SuperE!

To the one with the sensation...is the phone on its back with the screen off? I put my phone down quick to do something and watched my wifi go away completely...its blocking the signal on its back.try putting it face down and see if that helps

Also make sure that best WiFi performance is checked, and set the sleep policy to never in settings/wireless/advanced. It will eat more battery, but it should help a little if this isn't already done.

[Q] Does the Sensation blow, or do I have a Faulty device?

I have had my sensation for a couple of weeks now and it is proving to be one of the worst HTC phones I have ever owned. I am beginning to become concerned that I may have a faulty device, as my complaints about the phone are really starting to mount up. I will list a few off the top of my head and you can tell me if this is normal behavior:
Unlocking the device: Sliding the ring up to unlock the device can take as many as 3 or 4 attempts at times no matter how deliberately I attempt to do so.
Bluetooth Audio: If I connect to my car for both phone and music, then disconnect, then connect to my bluetooth headphones, then disconnect, then get back in my car, the phone bluetooth will connect, but not the media. This is solved by long clicking the bluetooth connection under bluetooth settings and going into options, then unchecking and rechecking the media box. (annoying and not a problem on either my nexus 1 or MT4G)
The phone is slow: Like way slower than either my nexus 1 or MT4g
Restarting the phone: When I long press the power button and select restart, the phone will turn off... but not back on without several presses of the power button.
Data Connection: I have, on more than one occasion lost my data connection in a 4g area to the point where all data is lost. No 2g, no g... nothing. No icon in the status bar. I have tried entering and exiting airplane mode to restart it, among other things. Reboot seems to be the only solution.
Call Waiting: The phone has, on more than one occasion, refused to let me switch calls when I receive call waiting.
Force Closes: I have received more force closes on this device with a variety of applications, than I have on any other android device that I have owned. To the point where I did a factory reset of the device to see if that would clear things up. It did not.
Line through non HTC Widgets: I get seemingly random horizontal static lines through random non htc widgets sporadically. Sometimes a reboot rectifies this, other times the widget needs to be removed ad readded.
That seems to be all I can think of at the moment. I eagerly await your responses.
Yeah, I'd get it exchanged. That's not even close to a satisfactory experience.
I also get a few unlock attempts.
The data network its extremely slow like 3g our less while on 4g outside with full strength in signal bars.
I also don't get a restart when selecting that and I just sts off completely and have to hold the power button to turn it on.
do you hear a noise if you press in the screen with a bit of effort? I don't know if its just my phone our a common sound.

I've had the Sensation since June 8th, I've had the static lines in the Widgets but none of the other problems. My lock rings works every time. I also came from the Nexus One so I never had Sense, I think it's a bit laggy but my apps open up just as fast as the N1. My phone fully shuts down and restarts everytime (I do it daily, it's a carryover from the BB world lol) Bluetooth works great too.
If I were you, I would get a new phone, something doesn't seem right with yours.
I have been keeping silent about it for the most part but I'm in the same boat with you on a few of those things. I don't use bt so I dunno about that nor do I have the line through the widgets issue. But my touchscreen sucks balls. It takes forever to unlock the phone, it just doesn't register my swipe up no matter how slow I go. Also in general my touchscreen is just weak. Tons of my swipes are registered as taps so apps or links are opened. I also have the data stall issue. I have read through the supposed fixes for people with similar problems but nothing fixes my issue. The lockscreen issue started a week after getting it, and happened until I did a factory reset. It then worked for another week before the issues showed up again. My sister has a sensation too and has the same touchscreen issues as me. I have been holding off, hoping htc would send out a big fix update, but damn it is depressing. I have already mentally prepared myself for giving this to my wife in september and using her upgrade to pick up a Hercules. I really hope some updates change my mind.

Can someone please let me know if you can hear the plastic parts of the phone rub when you press down in the screen? I have noticed if I press around the screen with about the same force of scaring snapping your fingers or less the phone makes a sound of what I think is the source between the screen and the edge frame of the phone. I first thought that was the reason why the unlock took a few tries.
either that or I think maybe a small air pocket caused by a spec if dirt was why the unlock want working since its almost right on it. It also works better if I grab the left side of the ring then the right that has that tiny pocket. But still I noticed the huge end call and call button I have to press on it a few times to get a response. I press it far left but near the air bubble that's why I didn't think that would cause any touch problems with the unlock ring.

I am having the lock screen issue , my 3rd phone, all three did it after a few days to a week. I do have the Bluetooth problem as well. I have a jawbone jambox and i can only get media to connect after initial pair. I always unpaired and paired again to fix the problem, i'll try your method next. I think the reason you cant change calls has to do with the touchscreen issues. I am waiting also for an update. The really really messed up thing is that HTC says they know nothing of theses issues, so a fix could be a long way off.
Thanks for the responses. I have had the phone for about 3 weeks and have been holding my tongue. The OP is a copy of the e-mail I sent to HTC that I have yet to get a response to. I will post HTC's response as soon as I get it. I was happy to see that some other countries received an update that fixed a few things, but really I just want to see if CM7 can rectify most if not all of these issues. I have been playing the waiting game, but might just throw in the towel and return it before my 30 days are up (CA).

While I do notice most things are slower than on my Nexus One, some things are just incredibly faster. Theres no denying that web browsing on the Sensation is some of the best I've ever used.

well, first full reset and retest. if it persists, then ya exchange it. my lock ring is so smooth i pull it up and play with it while bored. spin circles around the sun (weather lock screen) then either let go to unlock or put it back at the bottom. can do the same with all 4 app shortcuts. one flick up with 3/4 of the ring revealed and its unlocked.
edit: phone is 3 weeks old, multiple widgets and full of apps, stock launcher.

Grey signal with x wont reconnect

I have this issue when im at work where i get crap att coverage where eventually from being low for so long and staying on wifi my phone signal goes to zero and a grey x shoes up above them.
This wouldnt be so bad but it wont reconnect with a reboot or airplane mode reset which means if i dont check my phone i get no calls or info.
Is this normal? Is there a fix?
Thanks

This is an old issue. I'm not sure when the fix happened or what ATT radio would fix it for you but there is a simple (ish) solution. Basically, whats happening is that when your phone loses signal for an extended period of time it shuts off the radio and then cannot restart it. Using NoBars will stop your phone's radio from dying like that and will just periodically poll for signal.
That will fix the issue but just to satisfy my own curiosity, on your SDcard are there a bunch of files called Radio Dump and then a bunch of numbers?
Sorry posted on my phone and didnt notice the grammar errors
Yes i have the radio dump files but havent checked since installing the F1 radio.
I will try that app since this issue has followed me on multiple roms and radios
If there was a fix i havent gotten it
Thanks man
Edit
Just installed nobars but realized its a battery saver like juice defender
I will keep my hopes up tho
This ONLY happns when at my desk at work where att has no dark hold on me
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
you could try manually resetting your radio if that is actually the problem. just dial *#*#4636#*#* next time you're at your desk and go to phone information. if you scroll down it should say either turn off radio or turn on radio. try turning it on if it's already off, or resetting it by turning it off and then on again. I don't think this would be a permanent fix though. just a temporary solution when the problem arises.

Nobars will shut off your radio and stop it from dying. Trust me it works. My wife and I used it foe months waiting for the issue to be resolved. The radio dumps mean you're having the same issue.

I actually go into the carrier menu when i install a new radio anyway. Going in and out of airplane mode resets the radio but the problem is if I dont actually look at my phone (in my pocket) i wont know the radio shut off and can go through the day without getting any contact. I know its not the rom cause Im on stock. I know its not the radio cause I have tried about every one.
Its got to be a mix of crappy ATT service (which makes me wonder if resigning was worth this phone for free) and the nexus s hardware.
I am seeing if noBars will help. You would think this would be something google would fix ASAP tho as its happened since day one almost.

It is odd since this was a massive issue from day one of the Nexus S but that was before any of the other variants and it was fixed before any of the other variants launched. Since that fix, I've not heard of anyone having the issue any more with any variant. Part of the issue for my wife and I was that we lived in an area where there was really no good cell coverage from any company, so we stayed with T-Mo in spite of that knowing that we were moving soon to an area with great T-mo coverage, but being out of service so much resulted in similar issues as you've had: we would be constantly restarting our phones to see if there was anything we were missing. I do believe this will work for you, and I hope you find a permanent solution soon.
Thanks for the tip but i guess i am the lucky guy who still has the issue lol
Maybe hardware related? I will see what ice cs brings me
For today nobars helped but i did notice some batt drain from it but very minimal so its a keeper for now

Potential WiFi issue?

I'm here writing on tapatalk and browsing and have noticed that all of a sudden the WiFi will go off, drop out and restart. I hadn't ticked the : best WiFi performance, which drains more battery, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I also have he app: power manager and I'm not sure if there is an app doing that to the WiFi.
Anyone else had this issue?
Edit: definitely having this issue. Best performance or going manual on the WiFi Settings seems to have settled it. Hope HTC comes up with an update for it...

I also tested the static rather than the automatic solution for the WiFi, and it tend to drop equally. Only way it doesn't drop seems to be if I use the: use best quality WiFi, which reduces the battery life tremendously!
By the way, this is not happening during te phone's sleep mode, but during normal operation.

Not sure if it's related, but there are definite wifi issues with the one s. Mines completely stock, no power managers etc. It locks onto wifi points that that have always worked well for me (work, home etc.) with my desire and never disconnects. It seems in this mode it uses much more power and even gets a little warm. I can have left home for 4 hours and it still thinks it's connected and then has no data connection. The only solution seems to be to disable and enable wifi again. It doesn't seem to be able to roam from ap to ap without getting stuck on one of them
I think this may be an issue with Android 4.0. I have a Transformer Prime tablet running 4.0 and I get the same thing. WiFi drops out for a few seconds and quickly reconnects. I have noticed that it only happens in the first 12-24 hours after my tablet has been restarted though. After about a day running solid it doesn't happen.
I had a Nexus Running 4.2 and the wifi was great so probably not Android , more radi problem as discussed on other threads
I'm getting mine replaced tomorrow just to see if that will improve things. Unfortunately I was not able to make sure that the handset's serial number

Update.
The WiFi signal on this current phone seems to be spot on. No signal drop with any case on or covering the top of the phone. Signsl doesn't go to sleep along with the phone being on idle and overall really pleased.
I must also add that this new phone seems to have a remarkably better battery life as well. With my usuall use of web, tapatalk, a couple of photos a bit of WiFi, continuous account sync etc, on auto brightness, im at 13:20 and I have the phone on 83% battery when on the previous handset with the WiFi problem I was eating up the battery really fast. Usually I was at about 60% by now

I had exactly the same issue. Since I have changed the "option" / "wifi"/ "settings" / "extended" / "keep WLAN active in standby" = "never" (I don't know the correct terms in English), I haven't seen that problem anymore. I seems that the issue is standby-related, WLAN rescan won't start properly when waking up.
However, I don't think that this issue is related to the issue mentioned by the TO - it's the opposite.
I just noticed this issue when I left for work this morning. I have "Best Wi-Fi Performance" enabled, which was mentioned as a fix in previous posts, but it does not appear to be helping. When I leave for work and get into my office about 5 miles away it still shows as being connected to my home wifi network, when I try to use data like going to a webpage etc, it says "Data Connection Lost". Its like the phone doesnt know how to disconnect from a wifi network. I have the latest update to 1.84.531.2 710RD and still seems to have this issue. Have there been any updates from HTC or T-MO on this issue?
To follow up on this issue, I have called HTC and T-Mobile to find out if it is a known issue. They both told me that they were aware of the issue and that HTC is asking the carriers to report the issues customers are having back up to them. HTC said they are working on a software update that resolves the Wi-Fi disconnect issue. The T-Mobile rep said to have anyone else who is experiencing the issue to either call T-Mobile if they are your carrier so they can report the issue, or call HTC directly.

Been having this issue too. Called up T-Mobile and since I'm still within the 20 day window for return, they are sending me a new device. The girl that helped me didn't even want to talk about the issue or if it's been happening a lot. She didn't even ask if I had tried any trouble shooting. Just sent out new phone with free standard shipping. Works for me I guess, just hope it's hardware related, though I suspect it's software. We will see.

I just noticed that on my phone as well. If I set it to beat performance the WiFi signal goes crazy. So I uncheck it and it works "normal"

I also disabled best wifi performance and have not noticed the issue since. I dont know if its because of the factory reset or because I have disabled best performance. I have also changed "keep wifi on during sleep" to never and that may have contributed to fixing the problem. I really have no way to tell, and now that it appears to be working correctly, I dont want to mess with it

I'd be sending it back. I'm on my second handset due to the chipping MAO issue. My first one must have rebooted about 3 times in the course of 5 days. My current one hasn't done it yet. Sounds like a fault somewhere.

My one-s did this a lot from new. Seems to have settled a bit - desperate to find out if it's a hardware issue or not as I need to return it in next day or 2 if so. Seems to be happening to too many people to be hardware unless something is majorly botched!
Is wifi on?
My router was acting up and my phone would reboot every time I tried to connect to it. Factory reset did nothing.
I reset the router and updated the firmware and all is good. It was a Dlink 614+ or something like that.
Yes, wifi on. My router is a 'draytek', a new model and up to date though. My desire running CM had no issues with it.
I have noted however that there appear to be other wifi issues with the oneS. It doesn't always disconnect from wifi even after leaving the building, eating up the power and leaving you with no data connection. I've had to put the wifi widget on the home screen to turn off and back on again to get it functional. It's a pain. Still pondering about returning this.
I have a stock HOS, and Yes I get an RR a few times a week, not 10 per day. This weekend it just went to a power off state for no reason, pressing and holding the button the first time just gave a short green line flash across the middle of the screen and it failed to boot, releasing and holding the power button a second time did boot the phone again.
I also have the same Wifi problems described by others, but worse it can not find my router (2wire 2700hgv) when the SSID is not broadcast and my neighbours SSID is! This is my only HTC or Android device with this problem.
HTC One S in the UK, stock everything, no root
I also encountered regular reboots (approximately hourly) during my first week of use. My theory is that in my case this may be related to the radio issue reported in other threads - that of the connection jumping rapidly between different connection modes.
Since WCDMA coverage in my area is terrible anyway, I switched the radio to "GSM only" under Mobile network settings > Network mode. In addition to fixing the connectivity issues I was experiencing, my device has not reset once in the weeks since.
Not ideal, but since I'm on wifi nearly all of the time, the slower speeds aren't an issue for me. I am hopeful that when HTC roll out a firmware fix for the radio, it may also put an end to the frequent resets I experienced using the "GSM / WCDMA auto" mode.
4 days old and no reboots
rooted--no custom roms yet
i too have the battery % icon and will see if i get any reboots now
any of you guys have the "tampered" in bootloader that shouldn't be there and getting the reboots
I've had two random reboots. The first while using chrome, the other one right after it had booted after the first reboot then I updated to latest firmware, and I haven't had any since that. Maybe that's what the update does ?
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA
I also had random reboots but took it back and got a brand new unit. Its rooted and running custom ROM. So far no reboot issues. Though when my first unit was rebooting it was after an app froze up and I back out of it. From testing other units it appears to be a RAM issue. Sense uses to much memory. Seems the restart occurs after dropping below 165 mb available RAM.

Still wifi issues

I've had wifi issues since I purchased my htc one x for AT&T in may. I have had the hone replaced and the issue was never resolved and I'm kid of fed up with it for the fact that everyone I know who has an android device other then a one x don't have these issues. Issue seems to be Interment but happens a lot actually all the time.
Basically my issue is I have wifi turned on sometimes I lose connection.i notice this due to delayed alerts at times and when I'm using the phone such as on the play store, Facebook or any app that uses the I telnet every once in a while ill get a connection loss message and have to wait for the Internet to come back, usually comes back quick but still very annoying. Another ways can tel is when the phone is in sleep mode is when it happens the most. For example ill unlock the screen at times then all of a sudden I receive all my alerts such as gmail, google talk and any other alert that never came through b c of loss of connection. I also notice a lot when I open google talk right after I unlock my screen that it says I'm offline, then after a few I see it come online and if I had any google talk messages they then come through. I also see the time stamps when this happens, like emails come in and google talk messages and they can be anywhere from like 2-15 mins delayed at times.
I have also performed various of tests when the phone is asleep and I s end myself an email or google talk message and it does not come in until I unlock the phone. FYI this is Interment does not happen all the time but happens very often.
Are you guys still having issues with wifi ? Will getting a replacement possibly resolve the issue or sis this a known issue that cannot be fixed? I love the phone but sick and tire of not receiving all my alerts in real time. This is the first android phone with this type of issue and so frustrated.
Have you checked your wifi settings to make sure it's staying connected while the phone is asleep?

Yes of course checked all bases including forums for the last couple of months. Please note as per my op even when I'm using the phone sometimes I get lost connection errors even while using the Facebook app etc like google play store and other apps. So although while asleep seems to happen the most it also happens during normal use.
This is a known issue with many HTC phones. Even if you have WiFi to never sleep, when your display turns off the WiFi goes into some sort of battery saver mode. It doesn't turn off completely so you get your alerts eventually. I have not found a working solution short of flashing a custom Rom. HTC knows about this but hasn't fixed it. They think it is working as it should...

Thanks for clarifying this for me. If you flash a rom like for example cm10 or other rooms it can resolve this issue? Funny bc if wifi is shut off on just data works good, but the whole point is to use wifi as much as possible since I only have 3gb limited. I was thinking of upgrading to a one x+ but I'm afraid it will have the same issue as the normal, one x. This makes me want to go with a different company such as Samsung etc.. Anyways thanks for your help.
