[Q] Which one: Nexus S Versus HTC Incredible S - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys, quick question.
I currently have a htc desire that I passed on to a buddy of mine. I can get either a nexus s or incredible S. no price difference.
this new phone will be used for 3 months max, until my next upgrade
Which one should I keep?
Thanks

The Nexus feels like a cheap piece of plastic and is using very old hardware while lacking such basics as a notification LED and an SD card slot. Go with the quality HTC product.

Which phone has the best battery life?
The desire had decent battery life with leedriod rom, but I am looking for much better.
Thanks

I don't what to appear facetious but your question is like comparing Haagen Dazs and Ben and Jerry's ! I was very tempted by the Incredible S but in the end I sprung for an unlocked Nexus S (super lcd) and I don't regret my choice. The Incredible S has a more tempting specification but it just doesn't feel right. It feels heavy compared to the Nexus S and there's something about the feel and the curved screen on the Nexus S that makes it very special. Above all, I know that the HTC is due for an update to 2.3.4 very soon but I've been using Google Talk for a month now, and already I couldn't live without it. As for the solidity of Samsungs, I always believed that they were fragile but so far after 1 month (unprotected) in my jeans pocket my Nexus is pristine, although it gets wiped and polished at least twice a day. In conclusion my advice is to not underestimate the importance of the software and the speed of ota updates which so far for me have been lightning fast. One final BIG question : is the bootloader on the Incredible S still locked and signed by HTC ( S-ON or S-OFF) ? If it is, happy hunting when you want to root/flash it - despite the availability of AlphaRevX. I rooted my Nexus S in the time it took to plug in the USB cable + 2 minutes . Good luck, whichever you choose.

I never got fantastic battery life with the Nexus S because the SAMOLED screen sucks it like crazy. It would easily account for more than a third of my battery usage throughout the day.

but when you guys think about it, the nexus is googles flagship model. not only is it meant for development, it gets official updates immediately

Totally agree. I have an Evo 3D and Nexus S 4G (AMOLED) and the only reason I can't use the Nexus for more than a day at a time is because AMOLED eats so much battery when displaying white, which is in most of non-system apps/menus. I don't give a damn about the extreme contrast ratios (nice but highly inaccurate). I want battery life. My Evo 3D gets 15 hours minimum with medium usage, which is amazing considering that when I was using an Evo with an extended battery, that was above average.
EDIT: Also for some reason when typing on ANY keyboard, it doesn't register certain taps on keys and it REALLY pisses me off. On my Evo 3D I can type with barely any typos.

Nexus S lol. You would get better life gingerbread is always the best for it just like CM7 great life.
I have a epic im using and I love it so far over the evo 3d

Nexus S! Such a sleek phone when held in hand

Is nexus s still relevant

Do you think there will be a new nexus X out in December, like the last two years. Tempted to jump on the free nexus S today but just not sure...doesn't seem that much better than my n1.
Maybe maybe not, but I just got one really like it. I figure I can always sell it on the 2nd hand market and it should retain some value!
I believe so, I got mine days for the evo 3d dropped and could care less about all the checkbox features and some of those beastly phones out there.
This phone works and battery life is great.

Its more relavent than my g2 that i just replaced it with.
As far as i'm concerned, it is definitely still relevant.
I just bought the nexus S (off contract) because my samsung captivate decided to crap out on me and I don't regret it now for one second.
I was eyeing the EVO 3D when it came out up here in Canada but, due to my current situation, couldn't wait long.
I thought of a few points after I bought the Nexus S that made me realize it was the Google phone to get.
a) Much better chance of getting updates from Google with the Nexus S than I would've got with HTC, LG, etc. I learned that the hard with with the captivate.
b) Battery life. On my first full charge and I am over 15hrs with 50% battery life left. I imagine I would never get that kind of battery life on the EVO 3D because of the dual cores, 3d gimmick (can turn off though), and their UI sucking out the battery life very quick.
c) No carrier crap on the phone. (also can be a battery sucker)
Imho, keep your N1 if you don't need a new phone (or contract) right now. If you're due to a new contract/renewing old one later I'd wait until the "Nexus 3" is out some time this year or early '12. If you're just wanting a new phone, I'd wait as well
I love my Ns but my missus just got the Galaxy s 2, and its a BEAST!
Its stupid fast and just seems to take everything u throw at it, live wallpapers that make my Ns lag stay super smooth on the S2. But hey, she will only get 1 or 2 updates to Android at best I recon as opposed the Nexus getting much more. Still the S2 made me think a bit...
I would wait a bit if I were you, the NS dont bring much more to the table than you already have with your N1.

Which live wallpapers make your NxS lag? I tried a few, I only got the fireworks one from the market (Go! devs wallpaper team) to really stress my phone, but it was still fluent (initial drawer opening was not as fast as before though).

what was so bad about it? What other Androids have you/do you use? Ive used quite a few, and nexus s out performs just about ever single core comparable phone Ive tried.
I can respect anyones opinion, but just to say it was crap without qualifying that statement really doesnt give it much merit...

Not sure what responses you were expecting from here but YES!
I came from a x10 and a Droid before that. The nexus s is easily one of the best phones on the market (software/xda support).
And considering you can pick one up for two bills its a no brainer.

I agree. I upgraded from my Nexus One after reading initial reviews of the Galaxy Nexus and its sub par camera. The Nexus S is a significant upgrade. It is much snappier, has a great screen and a terrific form factor. Plus it runs ICS beautifully.
From my experience using the HTC Desire from a friend, yes. The Nexus S is faster and the screen is much better, plus you got ICS that is quite nice.
Worth switching from HTC Desire Z???/tmbile g2?

I would upgrade to Nexus S from HTC Desire, yes.
I just upgraded (downgraded?) from LG O2X to Nexus S, and it was worth it. The Nexus phones are so sexy, and if you are in to rooting and tweaking you phone, Nexus S is the ****.
I just played around with my friends HTC Desire the other day, and I have owned a HTC myself (Legend). And your first impression as an HTC owner switching to Nexus S will probably be "PLASTIC". But you'll get used to it, and after a while using it, the plastic will just breathe future.
I switched from a G1 to Nexus S.. what a huge improvement XD..
and yes its truly worth the upgrade
yes it is! I had a htc desire then switched to a HTC HD2 and now a nexus s. And i will never look back

Welcome to the club, then.
Congratz for your new toy. For everyone else having the same question its defenately worth it. Im coming from a desire and got an ics updated ns. Once i installed the 2.3.2 oxygen rom and got rid of the ics system awake bug I was amazed by the nexus. Also Im not gonna update it back to ics unless its really worth it. Oxygen gb and a good oc uv kernel make this phone hell fast. The bad thing its I got the 9023 and the slcd drains the battery quite fast since Im a hard user. Thats why Im waiting for my 3 spare batteries from ebay.

the nexus s wifi has some problem, weak.
I did the same road, then I can evaluate.
Desire Pros:
- ringers volume is better (not the best)
- more grip on hands
- more rugged
- better display (I have SLCD Nexus S)
- I love Sense, better agenda, better widget, better contacts manage
- have the led for notification
- better single touch accuracy
- have trackball, very usefull to move cursor
- have SDCARD
- more RAM
Desire Cons:
- no more updated by HTC
- multitouch problem
Nexus S Pros:
- ICS (but you can unlock your Desire to have ICS with non official ROM)
- bigger display
- better audio call
- multitouch ok
- I like soft button (I would not have said before)
Nexus S Cons:
- Stand by and volume button are relief, so they are pressed involuntarily
- it is a soap! all shiny and smooth. Does not exist grip
- The colors of SLCD are bad
- the headphones jack on the bottom
- the front camera is useless to "normal" call
- single touch is not always accurate, often I must re-touch 2/3 times to "click"
- wifi signal is more weak than on Desire. On long distance Desire is better.
- does not have SDCARD
- no trackball
- no led !
so, I love my Desire
Moved from a Desire to Nexus S yesterday. Happy so far. Both running CM7, Nexus just so much slicker, the speaker is much better and so is the bigger screen. Can tell it's faster when doing the usual things too. I did think the no LED would be a problem but you can get the touch buttons to flash or stay on when there's a notification.
Will be trying ICS soon.
It's a nice little update for 6 months until my contract runs out and i can get something new, as it worked out to the handset costing £120, minus whatever i get for it in 6 months.

Any complaints about the Nexus S?

I've been considering trading my HTC Sensation for a Samsung Nexus S. Do you guys have any complaints about the phone hardware wise, build quality etc? The wifi death grip on this phone is about to nearly drive me insane.
My friend has the nexus s and its awesome but I say replace your sensation with HTC or T-Mobile and just root and load a custom rom to make it smooth/smoother.

Did that already, phone is as smooth as a baby, but the wifi issue is hardware related, and oddly enough i use my phone landscape 80% of the time, which means wifi is non existent unless I hold it awkwardly. T_T.
The Nexus S is smooth. But the Sensation XE, That I own is smoother than my old Nexus S. With more time and optimization the Sensation will be alot smoother.
That's exactly what I did, I had a Sensation for a few days as an upgrade from Orange, but when I saw a Nexus S on special offer and got one for my daughter, I found it much lighter and the screen better than the Sensation. So I bought one for myself and put the Sensation on Ebay.
I also like the Nexus S OS because it is clean without any manufacturers customisations.
I updated mine from 2.3.1 to 2.3.6 stock ROM. Will wait for the OTA ICS update later this month.
I have found the WiFi to be a bit weak, this apparently is a known problem, otherwise just feels faster than the Sensation.
In future I'm going to stick to the Google phones because I prefer a vanilla Android install.

Weak because of a software issue? I know the Sensation had a problem like that and a wifi range patch fixed that. Right now I'm seeing now downfall to trading my sensation for the nexus

So far, I've seen no reason to not trade, benchmarks are about the same if not better. One last question, hows the camera?
Only complaint: dog slow compared to GSII. On the plus side, it has such a better form factor and it feels better in my hand.

yeah, how is the camera, its 5mp compared to the 8mp in the sensation and theres no hd recording, but its still great for picture taking isnt it?
I had to make the same decision and I haven't looked back. One thing about the sensation that drove me insane was the touchscreen sensitivity. I would always miss keys on the keyboard and I'd have to press harder than I did on my old vibrant. The nexus s has a much better digitizer and is much more responsive over all IMO. Comparable to the galaxy s (not surprising). I will warn you, the screen isn't the sharpest, but the saturated colors and deep blacks are worth it IMO. Aside from that, I can't think of any downsides.

Quality seems great to me, so, switching it is for me!
Thats the thing with HTC. I love the build and Sense (less so since I got ICS on my Nexus S) but the screens are a POS and thats the thing that you interact with the most the screen. It really makes or breaks a phone.
HTC really need to get an Amoled supplier or something similar, else they will fall way behind Samsung in the next few years.
I will not touch another HTC phone because of this.
I've never actually compared my screen to the nexus s. So to me the screen quality seems fine haha. . Although, I used to have the HD7, and the quality of that screen was HORRID.
I had a Hero and the screen was nice.
Then I got a HD2 about 6 months ago and put Android on it. It ran it well but the screen was an abomination. Also, the digitizer was poor as it missed buttons pressed all the time. So I sold it and kept the Hero for another 6 months.
Then I saw the Nexus S for £199 and couldn't resist.
I can't get over how good this phone is.

Hi, I'm getting the HOX tomorrow but have a few questions first.
1. How is the development of cm9/cm10 compared to gs3?
2. How is the screen at night?
3. How do you feel about the battery life?

4. Does it overheat? How is the temp normally?

1. Can't compare it to the GS3 but development is coming along nicely. Now that we have source, expect it to get even better.
2. It is widely accepted that the One X has the best screen in the business, and for good reason- it's absolutely amazing and makes all other screens look like crap, iPhone included.
3. Battery life is another thing that the One X excels at. The only other phone that can come close to it in terms of battery life is the GS3. My One X lasts significantly longer than my iPhone 4S ever did. We're talking 1.5 days with 5 hours screen time.
4. My One X has never overheated before. It gets a little warm from time to time, but nothing major. The S4 in it is one of the coolest running chips on the market.

Yeah but that could happen to any phone. My EVO 4G and E4GT both overheated from time to time when using navigation on a hot day while charging. My One X never has. I do have an A/C vent blowing on it though so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

Have you actually owned a phone with Sense 4 on it? It's not your grandma's Sense, that's for sure. I used to hate Sense with a passion, but they really won me over with Sense 4. It's easily the best of the manufacturer's skins. Smooth as silk, loaded with usable features, and it looks beautiful on this screen. I suggest giving it a shot, at least for a few weeks. I haven't had any problem with the One X getting hot, but battery life has been a little disappointing. With that being said, I am a pretty heavy user during the day (calls, voice mails e-mails, navigation). Depending on the rom it varies between average and not very good. Again, this is with my user habits. Personally, I got much better battery life with Blackberry and somewhat better life with the various iphones. Still, its a very nice phone and as stated, the screem is tremendous.
I'm hearing a lot of problems with the antennas on the HOX, is this happening for the international or att users?
Does the att version have any hardware problems overall?
The antenna issues don't affect the same variant. HTC got this one right. V

HTC Sensation: A Good buy?

So money isn't a huge problem. My birthday is coming up next week and I can get a new phone...I want the galaxy note but i know asking for that expensive phone will cut into bigger gifts
I've seen the HTC Amaze, Samsung galaxy Blaze and the sensation on sale off and on throughout August and right now the Sensation is free on two year contract...
Is this a good buy?
i don't care about the latest and greatest with the processors and all that...I just want to know from Sensation owners
1. Is it a good buy and are you happy with your Sensation now in August 2012?
2. What is a good free texting App that allows texting through data? I heard Google voice is good but it does not allow MMS?
3. Should I hold out and see if maybe the Amaze or the Galaxy S Blaze will be back up for sales? I own a Nexus S 4g right now and I am not too fond of Samsung due to this crappy phone.
I missed the web only special for the Gs2 that was on sale for like 3 hours at midnight so I am not sure which to buy....
Any help would be nice.
Thanks
Micah!
In short, no.
The screen may be sharp but the viewing angles are bad and its colours are quite washed out. Also mine, like many other sensations, has loads of dust under the screen which makes it hard to use in sunlight.
The stock ROM that comes with the phone is full of crap and lets the sensation perform to around half its full potential - there is very good dev support however so u can flash a better rom if u so wish.
I know u said that u dont care about processors but u really should.. we are on the verge of a new processor architecture for android phones (A15) so tbh this is not a great time to buy any phone since it will be outdated in a few months time. At least go with something like snapdragon S4 though (found in htc one s) which is probably the best out atm - about equal with tegra 3. The sensation has snapdragon s3 which is now pretty outdated.
Also the stock battery is terrible in the sensation and u will probs find urself buying a 3rd party battery after a few months.
In my opinion go with an HTC One S... similar form factor but loads better. If u wanna spend less look at the galaxy s2.
Good texting app over data is whatsapp (u must of heard of it) its free on all smartphones.

Thank you for the feedback!
Yeah the ONE S is Free On contract as well(with a 50 buck rebate)....I am so mad I missed the sell for the Samsung Galaxy S2 on Contract!
So you recommend the ONE S? Would the Amaze be a better fit than the Sensation or are they on par with one another? I heard the Amaze has a beautiful camera
Same question
I haven't any dust or battery problem...
But it true that the stock ROM isn't very good...

IS this the same phone that when you press home button it will always go back to the white HTC screen?
Don't get one s(I have it..in short it sucks.) Don't get HTC. Get the Samsung galaxy 3. You won't regret it.
do you absolutely NEED a new phone? or can you hold out a bit longer?
reason being, HTC One X+ is coming to T-Mobile this fall/winter and its a beast

I love the Sensation, only problem I have with it is the speaker quality and the antennas are built into the back case. Also if you want faster download/upload speeds, the Sensation is capped at 14.4 Mbps while most other phones now are 42 Mbps
Here's my 2 cents.. I think, if you don't have much of a choice and you aren't able to get the one s. you should just go for it.. Buy the sensation, root it, get a good ROM. This phone, although it is 1 year + old already.. Is still pretty awesome.. If you love playing games, you need not worry as most if not all games on the play store works absolutely fine on the sensation.. Watching videos are awesome and very much clear. But the only downside to the sensation is as fredcorp above have said.. The battery is horrible.. Thus, it is likely you would need to spend an extra 30 dollars for new Anker battery..Thats about all you need. I used to own a SGSII but sold it to get my sensation. Not regretting.. Again this is only my opinion. To me, build quality matters.. The sensation has got it. In terms of community (development) people are alot more willingly to help on the sensation threads and there are a ****load of ROMs, MODs for you to try out. cheers~ do update us on what you got. Enjoy.
Get the sensation for now, then upgrade later. I've had no issues and enjoy my S4G!
No, I have one and it is a battle against lag. Get the S2, it is butter smooth with the Exynos processor. I love sense 4 and will get another HTC phone in the future for it. I recommend the international One X.

What is great about the Sensation is the Dev support. If you like running different roms the Sensation is the way to go. You can choose Sense 4, Sense 3.6, ASOP, AOKP, etc. it never gets old.

In all my electronic devices, the Sensation is the only one who performs better today then the day I bought it. Yep! It gets better every week. Loud speaker is very weak, but other then that I enjoy my phone and it is performing so well that I don't feel the need to update my device yet. I have 2 Sensations and 1 Amaze and I really prefer the Sensation in the end.
Development thread is huge and support is stellar.
The 2 years contract is certainly the turnoff of your deal, otherwise you will enjoy the phone.
Development : sensation
Stock and fast stock : amaze

for the price they are now-a-days & the performance you get out of it i'd say it's a pretty solid phone all around.... except for the battery that is.

Battery&camera

I've owned The Amaze, Sensation and the S2.
The amaze is fast when it's on stock and yes, the camera is amazing. If you don't mind having sense 3.6 and somewhat crappy battery life then go for the amaze
The s2 is also a great phone but the screen resolution is pure crap ! Yeah it has beautiful saturated colors but Everything is just so huge and pixelated And the screen does get scratches a lot easier than the sensation and the amaze . It does lag a lot with the new OTA ICS update. Although, rooting it makes it a great phone to own u can change the screen density so things won't be as huge and it does have a great development thread lots of great roms to flash. It also has a big battery. So it is a great phone, only if you root it and load a custom rom.
As for the sensation it is my DailyDriver. It has a Beautiful QHD screen that i love sure it's not no super amoled plus but it has better resolution wich is a + for me. The stock rom is ok. It does lagg here and there. But the development on this phone is great ! Lots of roms to flash. It shouldn't be long for us to get a stable jellybean rom. Battery life does kind of suck though.
Thats just my personal experience from owning these phones.
I would get the One S though, it's a amoled display with a qhd resolution wich looks great ! And it has a very very fast processor. Rooting it and loading a custom rom should make it a even better phone to own !
