Ya think GB 2.3 will fix the Inspire's bad speaker? - HTC Inspire 4G

I was curious if anyone thinks that HTC's impending Gingerbread update for the Inspire 4G will fix the issues with the crappy speaker volume and tinny sound?
Probably not being as the DesireHD still suffers from it I believe even after the GB update.
I am not really into rooting, so the rooting arguments aren't valid. I prefer to stay stock.
Also on a different note, how do you tell if you are on 4G? Eventhough I am in a so-called 4G area, my network status always says HSDPA. I though I read somewhere if you are on 4G it says HSPA or HSPA+.
thanks for the info.

It might have a new radio that will fix bugs, but if I were to take a guess I would say no since the ROMs out there now do not.
If it says H+ then you're running 3.5/4G.

Acutally no, the H+ does not mean you are on 4G. It always says that, even in areas i know for a fact are still 3G. I remember when I got the phone it had the H+ even when AT&T didn't have the 4G network up yet.
I'm pretty sure when you look at the Network status under about phone it changes there. I noticed yesterday that an Atrix with the new GB update now says HSPA under network status.

You could always check into getting a warranty replacement cause even before I rooted my speaker hasn't suffered from any sound problems so maybe you have a bad speaker. Also you say you want to stay stock, there is a rooted stock rom in the developers thread.

That's weird, because mine switches back to 3G sometimes. Maybe it's due to the ROM I'm running. Sorry if I provided wrong info.

I know it's not a bad phone. I've had mine before the general public got them. Everyone I know that went to that HTC conference complained about the bad speaker volume and clarity. Actually there are many threads on here and other forums with a ton of people complaining about it. Even the Devs made patches to try and fix it.
So I know it's a design issue.
Here's an example. If my iPhone is sitting downstairs on the table and I am upstairs, I can hear if I get a text or email. With my Inspire, I can't even hear it if it is on my belt and I am standing outside. If I didn't have it on vibrate I wouldn't even know I received a text. A few co workers who have the Inspire have the same issues, and their from different batches.
Bluetooth is also weird. If I have my BlueAnt on and get more than 10 feet from the phone it disconnects. With my iphone I can be on the other side of the house away from my phone and it still stays connected.
But anyway, I'm still trying to figure out the 4G indicator to know when I'm actually in 4G. I thought I remembered people here talking about it awhile back, but can't find any threads on it.

In reality the H+ will always be on regardless of if ure actually on 3.5, 3.0 or 4.0, atleast with the inspire. The only way is to look under about phone under settings. The reason AT&T put it like that as to make u believe that their 4g is everywhere and better. But in reality it really doesn't matter as At&ts 4g is not 4g regardless of what they call it.

Well regardless of it not being true 4G, there has to be an indicator somewhere on what 3G variant you are on.
Being as the Atrix now displays HSPA on the new GB rom, unlike when it still said HSDPA in the same area with an Atrix which was still on 2.2 leads me to believe the radio in GB must be more accurate in showing what network you are on.
I am guessing that the Inspire is currently not displaying correctly being as it still says HSDPA sitting right next to an Atrix on GB which says HSPA under About Phone and Network.
My Inspire always says HSDPA regardless if I am in a so-called "4G" area or not.

It is most likely that the inspire just wasn't configured to show the HSPA. Att might have thought they were gonna get an update out first. Could be the atrix is set if the data speed hits a mark it changes the HSPA and the Inspire isn't set for it yet. The only true test would be doing a speed test on both.

Its not just you, the speaker is crap and so is the bluetooth, and so is the cell radio, and so is the battery, and the screen pops up, and.... LOL
I have 2 inspires and have had nothing but trouble. First htc that has let me down. I had a friend that went through 3 inspires trying to get the bluetooth fixed and they were all the same, he has since moved on. Hell I can put my phone right next to my radio and cover the bluetooth ant with my hand and get it to break up, pure crap. If I use a bluetooth headset it will start to get staticy if I put the phone in my pocket.I honestly think it has allot to do with the metal body.
I hate to be debbie downer but its true. You will be hard pressed to find allot of negative posts here because we have pride in ownership. I personally dont care. I call a spade a spade, and this phone has some serious issues. Not to say I dont like the phone because I do. But without the dev support I would have chucked this flacker a long time ago. With the proper rom its just so fast.
Now I will say that ever since I moved to virtuous unity my speaker is worlds better. I have flashed a **** ton of roms and vu has the best speaker performance for my inspires by far. I tried +20% kernels, dsp manager, volume apk and all that stuff. sure it made the volume louder some but it sounded like ass and still wasnt even close to being loud. with virtuous unity I am actually somewhat satisfied. Youtube videos and stuff still lack, but its worlds better.
As for actually being on the hspa+ signal or not, I dont know. On the stock rom I am almost certain the 3g,hspda, and hspa+ are all signified by h+. I know that allot of dev roms differentiate between 3g and hspa. But quiet honestly the speed difference is not night and day anyway. Your iphone probably gets damn near the same speeds. Some guys are getting 8megs and ****, but I have yet to go over 5 and I can get that with an iphone or other 3g android. And yes I am in a hspa+ area with increased backhaul.

not impress with the inspire

Why do my inspire 4g seem slower than my 3g nexus1 on t-mobile network? I get a better experience watching YouTube video on my 3g nexus1. On the inspire its slow to load and I get a lot of error message that pops up during a video. I paid $580 for my n1 so I could leave when I want. I think I have 15 days trial with this cell. I don't want to be trapped in a 2 yr contract and I'm not satisfy .
And what the help is up with this black screen while I'm trying to type? I thought it was just text messages but its happening now
I am not impress with your grammar.
If you're not happy, like you said, you can always return it and go back to the N1. It's a solid phone. As for speeds? Maybe you live in an area where T-Mobile has their "4g" on and AT&T doesn't. (As in, AT&T doesn't have much if any of their backhaul implemented.)
I get around 3Mbps down and 2Mbps up at peak. Videos are smooth and this phone is fast. For me anyway.
As for the black screen...don't know what to tell you. Texting is peachy for me too.
I am very impress with this phone.
I dont know whats up with the texting issue but my speeds vary by location.
Hope you get it figured out.

I upgraded from Fuze, definite improvement in hardware there, but even compared to my wife's HTC Aria, the Inspire is a better experience for hardware and software.
However... AT&T where I live (Yolo County, CA outside of Sacramento) does not have 4G yet. I have not achieved the speeds and cell calls can drop because of poor reception in very specific neighborhoods. AT&T did not lie when they marketed this is the 4G phone. The coverage areas suck right now for 4G, that's all. Buyer beware, especially if you don't do your research. Your other problems with the phone may be specific for that phone itself. Get it exchanged for a new one. If AT&T wants to keep your account, they should help you.

The main reason why I switched from iPhone to Android was all the drop calls & esp when calling another iPhone. Lucky for me, my Inspire has yet to experience any drop calls *Knocks on wood* in the Bay Area.

The phone is 4G capable as advertised. Just because you have a 4G phone, it doesn't mean that you live in a 4G coverage area. 4G speeds don't just magically appear by themselves.

Is anyone else getting tired of the "this phone is not 4G" line? I read the at&t page about their 4G plans and they are VERY CLEAR about what they are doing. No this phone does not have LTE, yes it will have HSPA+ as it gets rolled out. With this phone we are pretty much early adopters of AT&T's network. Those of us that have been early adopters before don't seem to be too worked up, those that clearly have not been early adopters are pretty ticked off it seems.
Do I wish I had faster download speeds? Sure I do, but I knew coming into this that there would be a bit of a delay with that because I READ the AT&T 4G page. Is this the perfect phone...??? Of course not, because we all know the perfect phone has a laser beam built into it and this one clearly does not, other than that glaring weakness I think it is pretty good.

Let me chime in here. It's NOT the phone's fault. It definitely IS AT&T's fault. Their "4G" isn't really 4G. It is what they call HSPA+. Pretty much the device is AWESOME, but AT&T's service SUCKS.
Ok as alot in this post has said 4g is not turned on in many areas, the phone is 4g capable, even 3g phone isnt always on 3g it drops to regular edge, 4g simply means that it can connect to there towers at 4g if the tower has the software upgrade. Now for the other misconceptions, 4g what is it well different people have been defining it differently, lte is considered to be 4g while it can achieve speeds up to 100 mb theoretically it does not get that, any of the lte networks that are up are running much much lower then that, hspa+ which is also considered 4g which was done first by tmobile can achieve speed up to 45 mb theoretically. U wont see those speeds for some time its room for expansion is all it is they are not going to max those speeds anytime soon. So att is rolling out hspa+ which is technically 3.5g and calling it there 4g network and also rolling out Lte which both are considered 4g and using them to overlap each other.
Same thing as cable we keep getting upgrades I have over 50mb connection wasnt long ago it was way slower, no matter what they wanna call it, u will keep seeing speed increases as they upgrade to handle the load.

1. It is marketed as 4G because it supports att's 4th gen network which is rolling out this year and is available in major cities only at the moment. Until then, you will get 3.5G speeds on 850/1900mhz frequencies. Tmobile does NOT use this.
2. Black screen? Dunno what that's all about but I'd either get a video of it for us to see or return it for another one.
3. And this phone is the best thing since sliced bread brotha. Haha. Can you say 3000 in quadrant? Wow, lets see your N1 do that.

I'm not sure how you got the phone, but AT&T's return policy is 30 Days, not 15. You have a while before you make a decision to return it. If your text box is acting up or whatever, I'd exchange it... that's not a common problem. As for 4G? I think everyone here has said enough about it. It's not the fastest phone... yet. Like I said before, you need the backhaul in place. AT&T is rolling that out, but they haven't said when and where.
Am I Fanboy? No. I have logic and reason to back up why I want to defend this phone's honor. There's a reason for all your complaints (except that black text box issue, get a new phone)
It's a great phone at a great value. How many android phones can you run at stock and have it be this smooth? Camera is wicked fast, display is great, gps is awesome, and for me? Internet is speedy, and will only get faster.
I'm happy with my phone. I'm sorry you aren't. You could return/exchange it. You have options, man.

Help ! G2X - Poor Reception ? Anyone Else ?

Just got the G2X today.
I'm having extremely poor to no reception at work.
All TMO phones I've used (G1, G2, N1, NS, Mytouch, Mytouch 4G, Galaxy S 4G)
in the past have random reception problems, mostly what I'd say is passable reception at work (in and out of steel buildings).
This G2X is the worst yet.
TMO service walked me thru putting a new sim in and and all.
But it didnt help.
It jumps back and forth from 2G with 2 bars to no service at all.
I didnt like the Galaxy S 4G but it got better reception.
I like this phone, vanilla and all.
Anyone else having this issue ?
If not its going back to TMO.
I got mine this morning at 10 and I have been having great reception! 4 bars with the 4G! And I came from the Samsung 4g also!

How do you know if you got 4G, I got the 4G symbol but network connection says utms and I mainly get around 3mb download on speedtest, but sometimes it goes to 7 or 8 mb down...but still says utms, I thought that was 3G. thanks!
reception
I have had great reception with the G2X. Better than both the G2 and MT4G.

I love the phone, but the reception isn't very good in my house. The nexus s had better reception.

G2x's reception is on average about 5 to 10 dB weaker than the MT4G that its replacing but I have full coverage everywhere I go and at home I just use wifi calling so its a non-issue.
I live right by an air force base and I'm sure their signals interfere with cell reception. at&t has tons of towers out here and I had to switch because of the signal interference being so bad.

I still have the MyTouch 4G and Galaxy S 4G and they both have much better
reception than the G2X does.
I'm pretty disappointed.
I'll probably end up returning it and going back to the MyTouch 4G
(I didnt care for the Galaxy S 4G....200mb internal memory what ?).
Especially since its being reported the Sensation is hitting beginning of June.
There are like 6 or 7 "poor reception" threads in here.
Does that mean this is now definitely a known issue ?
All I got was them walking me thru putting in a new sim.
Nothing improved and the tech said oh well it must be just the area you are in.
And this was after me telling her the MyTouch 4G and the Galaxy S 4G didnt
behave in this manner !
I'm leaning towards returning the phone at this point, but I'm going to wait
a week or so and see if any software updates addressing this are forthcoming.
I had a great reception with my G2x. Had 4G throughout the day both at home and office. And on the way from between home and office too.
Unfortunately had to return it for reboot issues.
I am getting only umts. The device shows 4G but still only umts. I have installed new sim card and had it reset on the network and nothing changes. Even my Vibrant will show hspda when in 3g areas but not this phone so far. I have called CS 3 times and finally they have agreed to send out a replacement phone. I also have had random reboots ( it reboots but reboots right back up to the app you were running before the reboot.) and after speaking for only apporx. a minute the phone feels like it will burn your ear., I really want to keep this phone but if the replacement is the same than I will just send it back and wait for the SGS II or the Sensation. Really is a shame as there is so much I really like about it.
Got the phone, what gives. Connectivity sux, shows like 3 bars and 4g but the internet is slow and spotty. What gives? My HD2 runs just fine in the same spot.

No 3G At All ! Whats Up With That ?
Definitely has an issue.
I've never seen it get 3G on this phone.
Only 2G or 4G.
I guess I will be returning the phone.
I really hate to, I like the phone.
But there is definitely something wrong with it.
My G2X has the best signal I have ever had with a T-Mobile phone. I keep a data signal in more places than I did with my Vibrant.

My signal is great, but I'm only seeing 2G or 4G. This does not surprise me, I'm in a HSPA+ area. Why would I ever see 3G?
I can't take the reception jumping from full 4G down to 2G constantly. I ordered the Nexus S and I'm not looking back. Even without support for 14.4, SAMOLED and better service will make up for it.

FWIW, I came from a Nexus S and think the reception is quite a bit better with the G2X.
If you have reception problems you can try 2 things:
1) Go into your mobile network settings and change your network mode to GSM/WCDMA if it isn't already selected. Then click on network operators and do a search. You should see T-Mobile UMTS, T-Mobile GSM and ATT GSM. Once you see the networks it finds, click on select automatically. Before leaving this menu, make sure you click on data roaming. Don't worry, you won't be charged unless your internationally roaming.
2) Swap out your SIM card.

Did all that the 1st day (4-20-11).
Finally returned the phone today after testing the data connectivity
at work today with the MyTouch 4G versus the G2X.
No problem with the MT4G but the G2X had horrible or zero internet.
I will post the results with a new phone tomorrow.
The rep said they just got in a new batch of phones.
I hope the exchange has fixed the issue.
Its mostly wifi hotspotting that its really evident.
I want the phone to work because its the snappiest phone I've ever used.
Maybe it could be the area you are in. Both of my G2x and G2 have solid 4g signal.

Has anyone EVER seen "3g" displayed on their status bar on this phone?

I have only ever seen it say 2g or 4g. I don't have the best coverage so I didn't think much of it, but a friend I'm Chicago is reporting the same issue.

Same here. TMobile has to figure this out. My brother's G2 goes from 3G to H.
Mine goes from 2G to 4G.
Make it a standard as to what shows up on the screen. My understanding it even when it says 4G, you may be in 3G. Only way to know is go into network settings or run a speed test.
Kind of stupid in my opinion.
Yeah, it's not a big deal really, just annoying.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
the exact reason given to me by tmobile is that our phones only register gsm(2g) and wdcma(3G and 4G both fall under this on tmobile) so without really checking at anytime 4g could be 3g its fast either way but annoying none the less
Same here...
So the phone just doesn't ever display 3g? When I'm on the 3g network it will show 4g? Sounds a little bit like false advertising to me. I really don't care too much, but if I am getting less than 1mb down and the phone claims to be on 4g it's kinda bs.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
From what I understand, if you go to Settings > About Phone > Status > Mobile Network Type.
If it says UMTS, then your on 3G
If it says HSDPA or HSPA or HSPA+ then your on 4G.
I could be wrong, when Im out and about driving, I can run a speed test and hit 10-12 Mbps and the settings will still read as UMTS even though that appears to be 4G speeds.

Thats exactly what im going through now. My phone right now for example shows "4G" in the status bar, but Settings/About Phone shows "UMTS" doing a speed test right now, my speeds are Download-0.53 Mbps Upload 0.41
I agree this is BS.
Tried calling TMobile to explain how the coverage map for my area says 100% complete 4G coverage but my speeds are slow as ****. Tried complaining so I can get out my contract and go to Sprint but they say as long as voice calling works slow data speeds dont permit to break contract.
But TMobile and there whole 4G compain definetly is false advertising.
ive gotten 3 or 4 different answers from various reps at tmobile but there all terrible i get fast enough service all around me even edge runs well enough but i wish they would show 3g when its 3g they act like they have amazing 4g coverage but all the new 4g phones do this at least i know the sidekick 4g does and correct me if im wrong but the g2 does as well its just a marketing scam
Hey i work for t-mobile and have the G2x. I hosted an event for the launch of the phone and had my LG rep there. She explained that LG actually forgot to put the 3G indicator on the phone. LG is supposed to be putting out a software update for that as well as the terrible battery life on their website very soon. Lets keep our fingers crossed

Personally, I think they need to do with the G2x like they did with the ipad... stop all manufacturing of the item, until all ends and malfunctions are corrected.
including software & hardware. They're just sending stuff out, and in the end sticking it to the consumer by giving them less than quality standard work for the same amount of money they would expect to receive for something put together and functioning "correctly"
(p.s. before i get the "apple made the ipad" bull, LG created the screens, hence the same "bleeding" "light leaks" in the new ipad 2, also Samsung took over when they halted the production of LG screens)

Well this is a lie they didnt forget anything LOL.
Look at the G2 for example which is made by HTC. It will show 2G/E or H. You will never see 3G symbol on the G2. Unless you install one of those custom roms where then the dev make the phone switch between H and 4G / 3G depending on data traffic.
Well I had bad 4G speeds in my part of town for years I finally gave up on tmobile today. Sold my G2x on craigslist and picked up a Nexus S 4G with Sprint.
I now get atleast 10 Mbps on avarage now. Proof is in the signature.
I think that might be going a little too far, but I haven't had too many major issues thus far. Just little annoying things that should be fixed with updates.

I have an Evo and on the stock Sense ROM, the phone will display 3G even on 1x (the CDMA equivalent of EDGE). If I hop to CyanogenMod or any Sense ROM ported from another HTC phone, it'll show 1x when I roam/send a text. Also Sense ROMs have like 6 signal bars.
It's all about what the carrier wants. Hell, they could make it say 4G all the time if they want. It's weird though that they show 2G and not 3G.

I have to put my two cents in on speeds.
I started (my smarty phone odyssey) on Metropcs in Feb....most speed test ever showed was like 1.6mbps...once. Mostly at 1.4-1.5. I was very unhappy with that. Between these speeds, battery issues, no support (from Samsung), I had enuff and went to Sprint. I saw around1.0 Mbps in the beginning. When I complained, they made an adjustment on their end amd it got worse! My average was .65 up and down. Then I went back to Metro. Seems they are suddenly having speed issues. Couldn't get more than about .80, with the same other issues as before. So I've purchased the G2x.
Got two yesterday!!
Both have bleed. Doesn't bother me as it is though. Just noticeable when screen is black. It IS bs, but not a dealbreaker, if it doesn't get worse.
I see people talking about speeds of 8 and 9Mbps and I say I'd be happy with a third of that.
Personally I don't think speedtest is accurate. But I never see that discussed.
T Mobile is supposed to activate these tomorrow. I'll post my speeds. If I get anything above 4.0, I'll be in heaven.
I have looked at youtube videos via wifi and am in awe of this device. Really smooth playback. Wow. Better than the Indulge AND the Evo IMO.
My new phone is supposed to activate tommorow. Can't wait
Oh and I'm in the Dallas market. I'm on top of DFW airport. Dallas is Metros home market so system is overall good here, but I'm in a bit of a dip so reception can be an issue in my home.

Sprint's been having nationwide issues for like the last 5 months. On 4G, I used to get 15 Mbps, now I get 1 Mbps. On 3G, I get 300 kbps tops. Their network is overcrowded, according to higherups I spoke to. They said it'll be fixed end of June. Not good enough.

What's your impressions of the Gingerbread leak?

I posted this in another thread, but figured I'd start a fresh one just for people's impressions and comments on the new Gingerbread leak.
As with most updates, the only thing noticable up front are just some cosmetic changes. Probably cause it's running Sense 2.1. I gather the majority of changes are "Under the Hood".
A few observations so far.
The weather widget now has sounds. You can toggle them off if you don't like them.
The netflix 1.3 app still works fine in 2.3 as it did in 2.2.
The Unknown Sources checkbox is included.
For people like me who hate the Fast Boot option and wish to turn it off. They moved it from Applications to Power under settings.
When you lower the status bar window, there is a tab on the bottom now for "Quick Settings", which will let you toggle BT, WiFi, GPS, WiFi HotSpot and Mobile Network.
But the biggest issue I still see wasn't addressed, is that under About Phone and Network, it still displays HSDPA under Mobile Network Type instead of HSPA like it should when you are in a 4G area. The Atrix with the GB update properly displays that. I don't know why the Inspire doesn't. So it's difficult to tell if you are really connecting to HSPA or not. Sure the backhaul might be there, but if your phone is still connecting as HSDPA you are not getting full advantage of the "4G" network.
Also so far the speaker quality is just as bad as it was under 2.2. Either HTC has people with hearing problems in their engineering department, or they just use crappy speakers in their phones, which is what I think. Bad components.
Well that's just a few things so far. I'm still checking it out. Hopefully this is the final version being pushed out this month. Props to the person who leaked it.
BTW I hate the new Market. I prefer the older one better. The new one is too crowded. The older one was simpler and to the point.
So lets chime in with things you've noticed different, bug fixed, or new bugs.
I havn't tried it out yet I'm Kinda new to all this and learning pretty quick...the one thing I love about Android so far is the flexibility
I used it for about 3 hours.
1. Sense sucks. Still
2. It eats battery like a mofo. Still
3. Who uses the speaker? Its a dumb complaint. 1/4" garbage speaker = FTL
5. I like the new market. It doesn't matter to me how it looks really. But I don't spend moments really thinking about it. /Shrug
6. Yes I skipped four.
7. Why does the weather widget have sounds? I can roll down/Open the window if I want to hear the weather..... ..
8. I didn't notice the touchscreen issue when using it. Then again I haven't noticed it since I reflashed MIUI either.
10. AT&T doesn't really have 4g man. So who cares what the device says its running on so long as I can look stuff up when I need to.
9. It wasn't Aosp so I ran away as fast as i could
11. Yes nine and ten are swapped.

Not sure I follow what you're saying. HSDPA and HSPA are essentially the same thing. The extra "D" is merely referring to the downlink component of HSPA. And we already know that HSUPA (uplink) is working because AT&T enabled it in the OTA update that came out at the end of April. Since we know HSDPA and HSUPA are both working, then full HSPA is working. Since the phone is reporting HSDPA, this is merely semantics; HSDPA = HSPA. You can't have one without the other.
Edit: regarding the speaker, the majority of the problem is software related. The stock ROM has a poor equalization curve applied to the speaker, or none at all. In CyanogenMod 7, for example, you can use DSPManager to boost the midrange frequencies and reduce the high frequencies to just the speaker. This makes it sound much better, similar to iPhone 4 quality, although not as loud

Already installed - will reinstalling delete data?
I've already installed a version of this that was stock with the bloatware, but rooted. If I flash this over what I've already installed, will it remove my data and settings?
As far as how I like it, I'm OK with it so far. I looked for the fast boot option in the Privacy settings and it isn't there. It's not under the Applications area either. So now my boot time is about 2.3 minutes, which is a looong wait.
Fast boot is in the Power settings.

Who uses the speaker? Umm...like everyone. I am not one of those people who wears a bluetooth headset all the time to make it look like I'm important.
The tinny / high treblely sound to the speaker is very annoying. Also the speaker volume is about HALF of what my iPhone is. If I am outside and wearing the phone on my belt I can't hear when I get an alert or text...etc...I need to also have it on Vibrate to even hear it. Now inside I can hear it. I can hear a text alert on my iPhone from the other end of my house.
@ henrybravo
Yes HSDPA and HSPA are not the same. When having a network update meeting, I saw a paper which had the evolution of the network from 2G all the way to LTE. HSPA was the next step after HSDPA. Granted it's a minor issue, but just because the backhaul is there at the tower, if you are not using the latest protocol in the connection, then you will not get as much as you should get as far as bandwidth. Yes it is pretty much moot I guess between the two, but I would still like to see the connection being reported acurately.
As far as the speaker, yes I've seen some speaker mods for rooted phones and custom Roms, but what I can't figure out is why HTC doesn't just tweaked it themselves. It obviously can be done with software. It's like they don't care or listen to people. I remember when the Inspire first came out. The speaker volume and quality was a big complaint all over the web, even on HTC's own forums. Of course they didn't listen and fix it.

"HSPA is the terminology used when both HSDPA (3GPP Release 5) and HSUPA (3GPP Release 6) technologies are deployed on a network. HSPA Evolved (HSPA+ in 3GPP Release 7 and beyond) is also part of the HSPA technology and extends an operator’s investment in the network before the next step to 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE, or 3GPP Release 8 and beyond)."
Even if they changed it to read HSPA in the network settings, it is still HSDPA for downlink and HSUPA for uplink.
I agree with you about the speaker though. It is my only real complaint about the phone.

Yes I understand all that. I guess what I was curious about, is why it always says HSDPA even when you are not in a so-called 4G area?
Back when I got the phone, before the general public did, and also before AT&T starting rolling out 4G, it still said HSDPA. The only time it didn't was if I was in the boonies and was on Edge.
So whether you are in a 3G or 4G area it will say HSDPA regardless. So making it say HSPA when actually in a 4G area is more accurate.

It probably has something to do with ATT's "4G" just being upgraded 3G. Same technology with increased backhaul to give faster speeds.

+1. The iPhone4 is marketed as a "3G" phone but it apparently runs on HSPA because I've gotten download speeds of 6-7 MB/s out of it. AT&T uses the term "4G" quite loosely.

How do I disable H+ for 3G only?

Really annoying when it switches from H+ to 3G and vice versa since it loses connection whenever it does.

So what do you want to happen instead? I'm not sure why its annoying, it's something that the phone should do since its an indication of what network you're on. Whether your stock or rooted that would happen. I guess you can just open up the ROM you're using and just turn the 3G symbol into the H symbol or turn the H symbol into the 3G symbol. I'm not sure if that's gonna work though but worth a shot.

It is annoying to some people because they are in an area where they are picking up two different towers and it is switching between towers, which means dropped calls. This is usually a problem if you are in a marginal area. This is what would be happening to me at home if I didn't have my microcell. The ideal fix for this, without the microcell, would be to be able to lock on to the the tower that is providing the 3G signal.

You just really like to poke holes or come at me don't you? Annoying, okay fine. I see how that can be annoying for those in marginals areas, to each their own. I'm more of a function over form type of guy and when it comes down to it, I'd rather just deal with the switching to know what network I'm on rather then changing icons or disabling it from showing the change in networks. Again to each their own which is why I offered my help. You're right, locking on to only the cell tower with 3G would be ideal but without said microcell, I think the OP is SOL for now.
Again, to the OP and to answer his questions, I don't know of anyway to prevent the change. I don't know of anyway to keep just 3G on or turn off 4G so it doesn't change so much. Like I said, I think the work around here would be to just change icons so that even if it does switch you'll only see one icon and thus eliminating the change in the status bar. If that works, you can always check the network in the about phone section.
by default it will latch onto 4g even if its a weaker (but usable signal) im trying to find the build.prop setting that will make it pick the stronger signal over speed. i remember seeing that before.
i believe
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 should put it to 3g. i have no signal where i work so i cant test. backup, change it, reboot and see.

edit: just tried it, still sticking on H for me, but I believe it may be because of where I am located. I get 4G speeds/signal so it rarely needs to bounce to 3G, hope the OP can test this out.

Just giving info bro, especially since I have first hand experience with this. It was a problem for me even when it was switching between 3G and Edge, which is what prompted me to get the microcell. Not everyone's situation will be the same as yours. If you feel like that is poking holes, then so be it, but the holes already exist because of this. No poking needed. The icons displayed are really meaningless in comparison to the actual signal. If you were experiencing the constant drop calls, I feel you would think differently. The phone is switching due to the cellular signal, the data just switches along with. It would be more useful if the op could lock to a specific tower. This is why the microcell works. It is the strongest cell signal near the phone, so the phone stays locked to it as long as you are in the proper range.

im goin a lil offtopic, but i need more feedback to continue helping. anyways, how do you like the microcell? i been contemplating getting one where as if i sit down in my apartment i lose my calls and some rooms i get nothing. its annoying.
@ Darunion....I have had my microcell for a year and a half now and, while it has not worked flawless, it has worked good enough to be able to get rid of my home phone. I still get an occasional dropped call, but at least the cell phones in my home have been usable since getting it. I do recommend it in those really tough situations where there is lack of even a decent signal in one's area.

i think that may be my next buy. tired of having to sit next to a window to even send a text. lol
Oh having it swap between signals will be a huge battery drain as it is always bouncing back and forth. There is an Something somewhere that should be able to stop it from trying to connect to the 3.5g network. ATT has no 4g. A seach will tell you what you want to know.
