faced my fears and updated :) - T-Mobile LG G2x

I was pretty hesitant updating to Gingerbread on the LG site, because of the horror stories I've read on some threads, then I thought to myself, "hey, these are the same kinda negative fear mongering posts that made people not buy or even ditch the G2x because of the exaggerated claims of screen bleed, rebooting problems etc."
And so, I went to the LG site read the instructions, downloaded and installed the new update. Simple no problems.
Now I have an updated G2x operating system and I'm gonna see what it's all about.

Good to know.

Google will not post a live link to android 2.3.3 because it's not out?

I think that the update/ota has not been pushed out yet. We are all just lab rats to test this update floating around XDA, so that when the update is pushed out two or three weeks from now, they can fix what we complain about until then. What do you all think?
Here is a link to Google forums I started about the sick color of the screen.

Google has not posted links to OTA's historically - so I don't see where that factors in.
I think you can take the fact that Google announced it was rolling out and that end user devices are receiving it (not just google employees and media units) to be a pretty good sign that it's the final OTA. As well as the fact that there are several upgrade paths provided.
On the Nexus One several "leaked" OTAs were available but they only went to google employees and media devices and provided only 1 upgrade path, from the base T-Mo version - and then only incremental upgrades for each version thereafter. The AT&T rev was left out in the cold until the final OTA at which point an OTA package was made available for every build to the final (including the leaked OTAs).
This isn't to say they won't release something in the coming weeks if they feel there are some real issues with the OTA, but given the way they've done OTAs in the past, this looks to be the OTA for 2.3.3

There is a new link out now.so there are 3 different updates out floating around in forum

Well that's your opinion. here's my opinion, I have had 6 unlocked android phones and each of them had issues the Vibrant/Nuxus One/Nexus S/Evo 4G/Mytouch 3G/T-Mobile G2...Did i mention that the only one that ever rebooted on me in important phone calls was the Nexus S. I'm sorry if I can't hold my breath anymore,I guess i'm not the only one because you just trolled/flamed 2 of my threads.

If that is the case, you bought a dev phone. Why would you be suprised?
Well, dev phones should not be sold to the public, and not sold for almost 600 big one's.

you had the choice, you chosen the nexus S.
google didnt force you!
every phone has isue's
doesn't matter what OS is on it.
so live with it.
and get 2.3.3!! it got fixed okey?
people like you are getting really irritating for advance nexus user's
accept the pakage you bought.
they didnt force you.
I am a nexus s owner and i am happy that the update has fixed my issues with the phone not being able to make calls for the first month i had it, i love the device and am relieved i got to keep it,
I do however find the comment above wholy unjustified, rude and ignorant!
Never once have i seen this branded as "the dev phone" the only place ive seen that mentioned is ...well ...on xda the DEVELOPER forum.
I love the phone, i love this site, but are retarded unempathic rants at people who have clearly been mis-sold a device not to their preference actually appropriate? i think not!
Lovely device, sooooo glad i didnt have to take it back (i spent the first month thinking i may have to do just that).
Now try be a little more kind to people that have bought a handset they expected to act as one from the start. there is no mention of dev or test phone on tha packaging so i am sure trading standards would side with the customer with problems rather than some jumped up little dev who thinks he knows best (that let's down all them lovely kind and considerate dev's in the proccess).
Rant over sorry (really hate seeing people be so obnocious)
Loving this lil device

G2X clogging up O2X threads???

I think there should be a new Section or even in the Sub-Forums a space for the GX2.
I also can see people flashing stuff they shouldn't to there phone and getting mixed up with all the different post/topics on the 2 different phones
Yep I agree make no sense in the same forum space...
and didnt one of the devs say flashing something from the o2x unto the g2x will break functionality? i also think there should be a seperate forum or a subforum
Lol I can see how that can be frustrating

They certainly did, thats why it should be moved even to the Sub-Forums just so thats it's seperated
Or people can start labeling threads "g2x" or "o2x". A little reading can go a long ways as well.

I think it needs seperating every other post in the general is g2x which isn't what I or others what to be filtering through hehe (well that my opinion)
It's funny how the sensation which is months away already has it's own section while the g2x doesn't... Also the vibrant and the vibrant 4g both have their own section while being such similar devices
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I don't think "clogging up" is the right term, "cross pollination" might be better. There is some crossover for sure, but it's obvious that some G2x things might be fatal to the O2x.. and vice verse... a separate section is definitely called for.
as long as posts are clearly labeled [G2X] [02X] it should be fine. but 2 months down the line it will probably be a mess in here
Yeah the android genius paulobrien posted that flashing O2x baseband will remove all phone functionality on the G2x. I assume that since only a select few people in the USA have the G2x now. That will have our own section by Monday, Hopefully CM7 will be right behind it.
I dont know how I'm gonna survive till tuesday
I'll probably just flash MicroMod's HD-Desire v1.7 for the old lady and get her set up
Yeah. Some people are just idiots and will try everything they see without even reading. Haha, a subforum would be enough i think. Paul would be away for 10 days so we wont be hearing from him for 10 days. Cant wait for his return.
Less offensive version.
I think the benefits of the united efforts of g2x and o2x devs outweigh the disadvantages of a mistakenly flashed kernel (which is no big deal because the phones are nearly brick proof). The small portions which differ should be marked accordingly and, honestly, people who flash the wrong baseband because they didn't read the thread properly or don't know what they are doing deserve to be reminded to properly read topics and obtain the knowledge necessaryin the future.
I agree with aMpeX!
There are labels like [ROM], [Kernel], [How To] etc., people should just put [O2X] and [G2X] in front of their titles!
And don't you start about people making mistakes because the G looks a bit like an O..
There were 2 seperate forums for the g2 and desire z. Those ended up merging.
We definitely need a separate forum for the G2x. First off, a lot of n00bs aren't going to realize the Optimus 2X has virtually the same hardware as the G2x - if they DO figure out that particular point, there is still a high probability they will bork their phones flashing O2X basebands onto their G2x's. A perfect example - the thread warning G2x owners NOT to flash O2X basebands is not even a sticky. One can argue that not reading makes it their own fault but at the same time, most of America is filled with total idiots. The rest of the world knows that.

I thinks the O2x people need to pushed out for the new hotness of the G2x.
C'mon ppl, we essentially bought the same phone, so why all the hating?
As I said, people who are unable to understand / too stupid to read shouldn't be flashing basebands in the first place. So if they brick their phone, it will hopefully teach them a lesson or too, and they will have to deal with the full wipe when they revert to stock using NVflash. You wouldn't flash a toasters firmware to a sandwich maker, so stop being ridiculous and read the goddamn threads. People put a lot of effort into pointing out what you CAN do and what you CAN't do.
Also, I want to emphasize again, apart from the Baseband, the Radio Interface Layer and 1 or 2 swapped partitions, those phones are IDENTICAL, so why split all the awesomeness brought here by devs to 2 sub forums. I, for one, would end up reading both.
And btw, as of now there is a sticky warning G2X users not to flash O2X basebands and vice versa.
Cheers

cpufreq-dvfsd high CPU, then reboot

Noticed this in my watchdog alert log from last night. I was awoken a little after 1:00 am to a reboot noise and pights from my plugged-in phone. I just looked at my watchdog high CPU alert log (> 50%) which happened about 20 mind prior to the reboot, according to the log times.
Anyone see anything like this? Could this be one of the reboot causes?
A quick Google search turns up some nvidia-related links but I haven't yet found anything mentioning g2x yet.

It's more than "some," has been going on for six months, and does "suck."
LG has posted the following statement to Mobilsiden.dk:
- "LG is aware that certain Optimus 2X users occasionally find that the product may freeze or turn off randomly. The Nordic market has been one of the first to sell Optimus 2X, and we have sold a considerable number of units. Return rates are low and within the error margin, and it is only a limited number of customers who have experienced the situation. LG nevertheless regrets much the inconvenience this has caused.
We have found the cause of the problem and has developed a software update to remedy this. The update is currently being sent out in cooperation with our distributors. The timing of when the update will be available depends on the individual distributors.
LG strives to provide specimens of highest quality and are working hard to ensure that users have a continuous and good smartphone experience. We apologize again for the inconvenience. "

chill out dude.... take a midol
you made a thread about reboots... im giving feedback weather you want it or not you made a thread about something that could have been posted in 1 of the 8 "reboot" threads......
im simply stating ive had 4 G2x's and none of them had that problem..... 4 out of a million but still all different build dates meaning that its not as common as you make it seem
so again... sit down... breath..... count to ten... and stop acting like i messed your whole thread up with one comment....
There are lots of people on this board that have $500 phones and are pissed because of a problem they're experiencing that LG knew about six months ago. Whether you realize or not, you came across dismissive. I'm thrilled your phone is working for you; and other who have problem-free phones too. I and others that are having problems don't need to be marginalized. And whether you realize or not, your come across as 12 when you rant the way you just did.

For everyone else, this is with specific regards to the cpufreq-dvfsb process and its possible ties to eventual lockup and subsequent reboot, which I have not seen discussed in this G2x forum. The purposes of this thread is, as articulately stated in the original post, to discuss cpufreq-dvfsd forbthose who are experiencing reboots.

Is the update really coming? Customer Reps clueless.

I called a T-mobile Rep today about the "Screen-Bleeding" issue that many people are facing. It's not a deal breaker on my phone, just wanted to see if there was anything that could be done about it. She redirected me to LG saying a fix would be coming in terms of a software update. (clearly she did not know what she was talking about as this is a hardware problem)
Anyways, I asked the LG rep about the screen-bleeding issue and if there is ever going to be a fix for it. He said "No, the problem is there with all phones not just ours and we cannot offer replacements." I asked him what the t-mobile rep meant about a software update coming later this month. He said T-mobile has been saying that LG will release an update soon to their customers for a while now and it has nothing to do with what LG really plans to do. To his knowledge he is not even sure if LG is planning to release an update.
On a side note, surprisingly on my second call to t-mobile they decided to replace my phone, really odd considering I purchased my phone off craigslist. I did have to pay a 20 dollar warranty/exchange fee however.

Before anyone goes all batty over this statement, remember what we know:
-T-Mobile support staff and apparently their retention staff do not have a consistent statement around updates/upgrades. This is evident by the variety of statements we have seen reported here.
-LG is a big company. They have been very vague about what is up next for the G2x. Though we can be fairly sure an update is coming, details about fixes etc, have mainly come from the T-Mobile people mentioned above, and rumors created by us and other forums, to include the Tech Paparazzi.
-There have been many reports of an update out in the open. Nothing is confirmed by LG, but, we have visual documentation of its existence.
-Screen Bleed is indeed a hardware problem and it is not unique to LG.
-Many of the current, hot new phones have been experiencing very similar problems with reboots, screen bleeds, death grips, WiFi failure.
-There appears to be a consistent story among all companies where there are reports of problems, along with reports of no problems.
While we would love to hold T-Mobile and LG accountable for issues with any phone, most likely, they will fix what they will fix and move on. We'll argue for awhile, Mr. Clown will shut threads down, and eventually in a few months we too will move on. For me, I have a relatively problem free phone, I would love to see it loaded with the newest of the new. To my friends and partners in crime on XDA who have problematic phones, I hope the update will bring relief. I know the answer is going to be somewhere in between.
I look forward to the dialog this thread will create based on first hand conversation with both companies....let the rioting begin....

Yeah definitely agree seems that there is a lot of hype rumors created from the t-mobile side to get the release out to the customers to keep them happy. Don't think it is that "pressing" for LG to really push out any update and to them they don't really care, but are just doing so to fulfill their contract requirements with T-mobile. But come on the leak has been out for two months and still LG hasn't pushed the update out to T-mobile. Sure hope it will come soon!
Honesyly I don't even ccare about the update anymore. I just rooted and flashed nightlies on my phone and everything is better. Our devs Here are better then their engineers it seems like

Its one thing if the problems you listed are experienced by the minority but its another when the problem is as wide spread as the screen bleed issue on the G2X. I think out of all the phones recently released, the GSII is probably built the best in terms of major wide spread issues.

Eh they have some nasty issues too. Nasty Yellow spots and other screen issues. They do seem to have the least amount of "major" problems. My G2x runs flawlessly these days. So it would be between yellow spots or screen bleed.
I honestly think that it is just the Nvidia hardware. I have a Asus Transformer and it also has the Sleep of Death issues (won't wake up). Just like the G2x, a custom rom and kernel fixed it as well.

Hmm, not exactly. The banding on the left 1/4 of the screen can only be seen on a solid grey background, at 10% display brightness, in the dark, and by taking a picture of the screen. You can't see it with the naked eye. To the anal retentive, it's huge. To the 97% of the forum that haven't even looked at the thread on it, not so much. There's been other display QC issues but nothing horrible considering how many have been sold.
Can we just post in all caps on the main page "CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS KNOW LITERALLY NOTHING"?
Would probably save a lot of heartache.

The Canadians haven't received it yet (though it is slated for October) and you expect people to believe AT&T will be releasing it this week? I guess it could happen, but I've yet to see any convincing evidence. Anyone working at AT&T should not be considered a good source for anything. Regardless, don't touch it until it is checked out by those that know what they are doing. Of course, the same "challenged" people that screwed up with MF3 (and continue to do so) will do the same with 4.3 no matter what kind of warnings people post. Some people just don't know how to read and never learn from their mistakes.

It was posted several times well before MF3 was ever released:
A. Do not take the MF3 update until it was checked out (unless you don't care about modding).
and
B. A couple of ways to prevent the update, automatic or not.
It was then reported / posted several times directly after MF3 started pushing (within 1 day) that it would auto-update and exact instructions were provided on how to keep it from doing so.
There are no excuses, just lack of reading.
Like I said, if you don't care about changing or modding your phone than it doesn't matter, but if you are here at XDA in the first place, it means you DO want to do things to your phone and therefore, there is no excuse for not knowing about the updates, what to do or not to do with them, and how to prevent them if needed. The only reason for this is not reading.
Personally, I don't care. I know what to do for my phone because I search, learn, and read. However, the dozens and dozens of people that come running here crying for help when they should have helped themselves is annoying. It's sad when people take the time to provide information in an informative and easily understandable way and others just ignore it and then want to blame others because they did so. And that is exactly what happens...again, no excuses.
If people would read THIS, I am telling them NOT to update before the update is checked out to see what it changes and effects. The thread title is, "OFFICIAL 4.3 UPDATE AT&T I337". That is all the information that is needed for a search here at XDA, on Google, or even a simple visual search. If anyone puts ANY minimal effort into it, they can see what I have posted here. But, that is the problem, people are too lazy and to entitled to do anything on their own to take responsibility for what they do to their phones. They would rather call the people that follow XDA rules and take responsibility for what they do names like "****" or "Condescending" when it is pointed out to them where to learn about what they want to do and what they should have done to begin with.
So, here it is if you want to ever MOD your phone again in any way:
DO NOT TAKE THE AT&T 4.3 UPDATE (OR ANY OTHER UPDATES) OR ALLOW YOUR PHONE TO AUTO-UPDATE UNTIL THE DEVS AT XDA HAVE A CHANCE TO CHECK THE UPDATE OUT TO SEE WHAT IT CHANGES!
If you do, it is your own damn fault...take responsibility for it!

It'll be locked down tighter than mf3. Each new version will patch the previous versions vulnerabilities.

Sigh... so true. That's why I will never outright buy a phone from AT&T again.
Will be getting a GPE phone if I go with another Galaxy.
To keep it on topic, I'm with the others on this, I don't put my faith in employees at AT&T. Sure it's possible the update could drop this week... but either way I won't be updating any time soon.

I come here once and awhile, not in my wildest dreams did I expect a forced over the air update to come, even apple doesn't pull that...so people who like to have a rooted phone does not mean they frequent this site often

I agree that it is a crappy tactic from AT&T, but the fact that your phone updated is completely your fault. The XDA rules state, "To search before you post". That is the first thing you should do when coming here for any information. The second thing is to read the "pinned" threads in the General and Q & A sections. It doesn't matter if you come here for something once or 100 times, it is still your responsibility to do so. What happens to your phone is ONLY your responsibility. Some things can not be fixed, changed, or controlled. The phone updating is not one of those things. Your phone auto- updated because you did not learn about it being able to do so. If you signed any paperwork with AT&T I guarantee you signed a waver that said they can and will modify your software at any time with or without any further consent. It's your fault if you didn't read it.
There are plenty of people around here that were born with the same knowledge about phones, and Android, and Modding that you and I were born with. But those people (and myself) took the time to learn about their phones and took responsibility for what they wanted to do to their phones. They didn't come to XDA, ignore all of the rules, and make a user account just to ask a question about something they did wrong to start with. Instead, they came here, read the rules, agreed to them, made a user account, and proceeded to search, read, and learn about their device. Many of them then went on to start modifying and developing so others could benefit from their time and actions. Not everyone achieves that level of knowledge but everyone IS expected to follow the rules, search, read, and learn. In other words, like I said, there are no excuses. Everything involving what has or will happen to your phone is your (and only your) responsibility. Just like it is for everyone else and their phone.
one of the first things I do after rooting a device is to freeze all the bloat AND any ota or updates. when an update starts to come , immediately hit airplane mode and don't disable it until figuring out how to kill the update.
don't play the modding game without fully understanding what you're doing.

With the MF3 update.. It seems the 3 Required apps to freeze the OTA are not all there. 1 Of them has a different name under my phone. It seems to be now listed as AllShare Cast Dongle S/W. Can someone confirm that this is indeed the third piece of the puzzle to freeze updates? Has this any affect to AllShare feature?
I tried searching around, but everything seems to point to only blocking the update prior to MF3. Nothing notes the new changes. And I guess is there any real point in stopping the next update? Seeing as LOKI is the only real(no limitations) solution to the bootloader lock?
Is there anyone working on the bootloader for MF3?
Thanks!

I disagree it is the users fault. Mine did the same thing. By the time I left the store mine was already updating on its own. It's not like you can root while you are at the store. I have rooted every Android I have owned but never had a device update on its own until this S4.

It's difficult to predict a phone updating before you leave the store you bought it at. That is probably one of the few excuses that would be legitimate. It's still your responsibility to research the phone before you buy to see what it might or might not do, but even then it's difficult to do anything about it that quickly. It was posted several times to not put the sim card into the phone before you could take steps to prevent the update but sometimes it's just not possible. Blaming it on "other" phones you have had not auto-updating is just an excuse. This isn't those other phones and it is / was still your responsibility to research and learn about THIS phone before you took ownership. It is simply no one else's fault that you didn't read and learn. You might feel like you didn't need to or shouldn't have to but that doesn't change the fact that the information was out there, you just didn't seek it. However, like I said, even if you would have, it still might have been difficult to stop it in your particular situation.
Most people (99.9%) of people that throw around excuses are solely to blame for the phone updating (or anything else that happens to it). It is completely their responsibility, they just want to blame someone or something else. Using, "I didn't know" or ,"Who would expect the phone to do that", as an excuse when as much information exists about it as does, is just an attempt at not taking responsibility. Some people take responsibility for their actions and have no trouble stepping up and admitting something happened because of their actions or lack there-of. Others, always want to blame someone else.
If anyone is keeping score I am one of the (apparently rare) folks who reads this forum but has no intention of rooting or modding or hacking etc my phone.
But thanks to this forum I learned which of the att and Samsung apps I could safely disable.

Its not like an iphone where you have to tell it to update, it just happened, I had an iphone for 4 years, never once did I update until there was a jailbreak and I know I can't be the only one, I rooted, tried a few custom roms, didnt like them and never came back to this site until my phone updated itself. So I'd just get off your high horse because well putting down people to make one feel better isn't a great trait to have.
There will be NO 4.3 update for ATT before the INTL peeps get it, I am telling you now, att will not have one till way after the 1st of the year....
That ATT rep is full of .....need I say more...
