Google will not post a live link to android 2.3.3 because it's not out? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think that the update/ota has not been pushed out yet. We are all just lab rats to test this update floating around XDA, so that when the update is pushed out two or three weeks from now, they can fix what we complain about until then. What do you all think?

Here is a link to Google forums I started about the sick color of the screen.

Google has not posted links to OTA's historically - so I don't see where that factors in.
I think you can take the fact that Google announced it was rolling out and that end user devices are receiving it (not just google employees and media units) to be a pretty good sign that it's the final OTA. As well as the fact that there are several upgrade paths provided.
On the Nexus One several "leaked" OTAs were available but they only went to google employees and media devices and provided only 1 upgrade path, from the base T-Mo version - and then only incremental upgrades for each version thereafter. The AT&T rev was left out in the cold until the final OTA at which point an OTA package was made available for every build to the final (including the leaked OTAs).
This isn't to say they won't release something in the coming weeks if they feel there are some real issues with the OTA, but given the way they've done OTAs in the past, this looks to be the OTA for 2.3.3

I think this thread is unnecessary and you just like to complain.

There is a new link out now.so there are 3 different updates out floating around in forum

Well that's your opinion. here's my opinion, I have had 6 unlocked android phones and each of them had issues the Vibrant/Nuxus One/Nexus S/Evo 4G/Mytouch 3G/T-Mobile G2...Did i mention that the only one that ever rebooted on me in important phone calls was the Nexus S. I'm sorry if I can't hold my breath anymore,I guess i'm not the only one because you just trolled/flamed 2 of my threads.

whats the difference between them?

If that is the case, you bought a dev phone. Why would you be suprised?

Well, dev phones should not be sold to the public, and not sold for almost 600 big one's.

you had the choice, you chosen the nexus S.
google didnt force you!
every phone has isue's
doesn't matter what OS is on it.
so live with it.
and get 2.3.3!! it got fixed okey?
people like you are getting really irritating for advance nexus user's
accept the pakage you bought.
they didnt force you.

I am a nexus s owner and i am happy that the update has fixed my issues with the phone not being able to make calls for the first month i had it, i love the device and am relieved i got to keep it,
I do however find the comment above wholy unjustified, rude and ignorant!
Never once have i seen this branded as "the dev phone" the only place ive seen that mentioned is ...well ...on xda the DEVELOPER forum.
I love the phone, i love this site, but are retarded unempathic rants at people who have clearly been mis-sold a device not to their preference actually appropriate? i think not!
Lovely device, sooooo glad i didnt have to take it back (i spent the first month thinking i may have to do just that).
Now try be a little more kind to people that have bought a handset they expected to act as one from the start. there is no mention of dev or test phone on tha packaging so i am sure trading standards would side with the customer with problems rather than some jumped up little dev who thinks he knows best (that let's down all them lovely kind and considerate dev's in the proccess).
Rant over sorry (really hate seeing people be so obnocious)
Loving this lil device

Samsung undecided about Gingerbread on Galaxy S, Google says hardware needs 'similar'

If the Nexus S is basically a Galaxy S in Gingerbread disguise, you'd think Samsung would be bursting at the seams to offer a software upgrade for all the phones it's already sold from that family. Okay, you really wouldn't, but you'd hope that would be the case, right? Well, Pocket-lint prodded Samsung on just that point and managed to finagle the following response from a local UK contact presumably speaking on behalf of the mothership:
"In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system ("Update").
Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors".

Nope, the Galaxy S will be getting gingerbread:

A reporter already touched bases with Samsung, Samsung has claimed to be working on Gingerbread way before Motorola and HTC supposedly because they were experimenting with it on the tablets.

Both of these pieces of information have been discussed in the Gingerbread thread.
And saying "Nope" doesn't change the fact that the Engadget article is pointing out the same inconsistencies - Samsung UK says "unknown at this time" and as your tweet shows; Samsung India says "yes" - so I think we can agree that the answer is undecided.
No idea why a new thread was started.

Who is this contact and presume is better way of saying assume.
I truly hope that India is right.
Considering most employee's Twitter use about work is governed by non-disclosure agreements, for an Indian employee to Tweet something like that he is either corect and doing it with company permission, or soon to be fired, correct or not.
A big question is where do Samsung software engineers work?
Maybe they work in India or Korea, who knows. But I think the UK wouldn't have as much knowledge as either of them.
We'll just have to wait and see.

You are truly a shining beacon in the pantheon of multi-tasking.

Bravo to the UK rep for giving a nice neutral PC response. He should get a job in politics.
Seriously, what is the rep supposed to say?
"Yes, without question."
"NO, never going to happen. Buy new Samsung products."
Do you think samsung wants to make more money or keep current customers happy?
Because I think they are more after money.
So they in my conclusion they would not make gingerbread FW for SGS.
they would make a whole lot to give us froyo and make the "next gen" phone with Gingerbread and have that updated to whatever is going to be next....h...h...

Well making money and keeping your customers go hand in hand.
Honeycomb
Sent from my Axura 2.1 phone with Gingerbread keyboard.
ah... is that the announced name honeycomb???
I didnt look it up haha >_<
anyways technology is changing so fast they cant keep one item for more than 2 years now without it being obselete now.
We have a SGS captivate because we wanted the best...
but for how long?
I am pretty sure by next summer its going to be mid range by than.
So like half the people with a captivate will get the "newest bestest" phone by then because thats what we want. the best tech for that time... well those with money atleast haha
so my point is why waste time on a mid range phone when they can concentrate on a better phone by the time they can put gingerbread into SGS variations.
Also with all the carriers being stingy with froyo... =/
I can only see 1 FW update for new phones lately unless its Dev phones.
Reason why iphone are good is because they can update their fw because all their phones are similar and is on one carrier till they go verizon.
This is just my opinion though
only thing we can do is just wait and see. ^^
have a good day and really I do hope for Gingy for our phones.

Because if you don't treat current customers well it makes it harder to get new customers.
if most customers are like me i had the i8910 hd and changed to captivate to see if they might have better support which is a whole lot better than the i8910.
but really... with tech moving so fast support will only last 2 years the most imho
look at nokia and sony...
they are like that also ^^ not only with phones but with other things.
but everyone has their opinion and story
I guess this is getting more and more off topic
im sorry haha

Ok.. is SG going to give us Gingerbread.. They say they will, but by then we are going to be PAST Honeycomb, they are slow, lazy and do not care. Honestly, they rather sell a new phone with the new OS then just do a free update.
lets be honest, they will give it to us, but by then it will be too late
NOW, lets think about this tho. the Nexus S is a Galaxy S with a twist right. So lets wait till some of the Chefs in the Rom dept give us a ROM unlike anything in efficency that SG will give us.
I mean, do you think the update to Froyo is going to be as good as the stuff that is out already? heck we even have some stable OV-UV HSPA roms out there, stable and all.
I'v had HTC, Samsung, and millions of other phones, i never rely on the manufacture. Heck even the iPhone had such better stuff when it was jailbroken.
just say'n. the newest from the manufactures, will be nothing but just obsolete crap.

HTC service reps have been given the “OK”

I know that a Q3 release of Gingerbread for the HTC Thunderbolt is sort of assumed at this point since they missed their Q2 deadline, but we wanted to point out that HTC service reps have been given the “OK” to spread the word. One of our readers reached out to express his concerns over the various problems with his device and received a response back that included word on the update:
…We will certainly pass along your concerns to the developers at HTC. We are working hard to address the issues you have mentioned with future updates for the device. We are excited to announce that the HTC Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q3 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability…
Not surprising of course since we are already in Q3, but that should at least narrow it down to some time within the next 8 weeks. Uggh. And still no word on the original Incredible – we’re thinking Q3 for it as well, though.
Cheers Todd!
yawn...........
I'll wait until I actually see a released gingerbread update.
It cracks me up how the same reps told everyone that the TB is getting GB by the end of the 2Q and that never happened. Now the same people give a new timeline and we are suppose to believe them? Why is this even news?
Same for the Incredible. We were given end of June, then July, now nothing.

They're treating it strange? This is the first LTE device. It's clearly not sorted out yet. It's a little more complexe than a dInc2. Other than making your phone slower and eat more power, why is gingerbread this magic unicorn? Exactly! People complain about the battery but this phone does, for all intents and purposes, the same things as their PC's at home. They're on it constantly and then complain when it dies in six hours. Most standard laptop batteries don't last six hours.
People will never be happy and will continue to blame the networks and the manufacturers for being at fault.
This is why we root and this is why we continue to support our developers.

Which part of this is immature? The part where I made sure that the sarcasm was in the first dozen characters of the message body - so that a mouse hover over the subject in the topic list would reveal it?
Or the part where I'm expressing my continued annoyance with the complete lack of realistic response from Samsung on this? (which is the point of the messsage - in case you missed it.)
As for being a great developer - this is actually quite tame compared to some of the things those better than myself (both of them, actually) have to say about samsung, HTC, and others.
I'm merely repeating what samsung's marketing department is already doing: Talking about a great ICS upgrade coming to these devices, but leaving the page blank when asked WHEN it's coming.
As for how it might make me look - I honestly couldn't care less. Because it seems to matter to you, however, I'll reveal that I didn't bother to shave this morning, and I haven't taken a shower since last night. Oh, and my shirt is wrinkled. (That has nothing to do with maturity - it's just laziness.)
Take care

I just hope that once ICS drops there is enough source to get CM9 to this device. The current ROM is laggy as hell. A nice ASOP option would be wonderful.

I'd be dishonest if I didn't say that I'm close to giving up hope for this tablet. Samsung is treating it as a red-headed stepchild, and won't even release the full honeycomb sources so that the dev community can pick up the pieces and fix that which they either don't care about or don't have the resources to fix.
However, its not just this one tablet. I'm starting to notice a pattern with samsung... they do make nice devices, but once they have your money, you apparently are nothing more than excess baggage to them. Instead of giving us good support, releasing GPL'd source code, and delivering upgrades that they promised, they gave us an app we can use to complain with. I guess having an app spitting out scripted responses is cheaper than having a human doing it. It's not like you really need a human to say "it's coming soon."
They have resources developing a dozen new devices at a time (given their rate of new product announcement), but what resources are fixing the issues and keeping their existing product lines current? It doesn't seem like much.
Since ICS was released on the GSM galaxy nexus (8 months ago), how many new products has samsung released or announced? A couple tablets, and several new phones. How many existing products (which were promised ICS upgrades) have received that upgrade? Two (and at least the SGSII release was very buggy.)
Keep in mind that samsung has had the ICS sources for quite a bit longer than other companies.. Yet, other companies are upgrading their existing devices long before samsung is. Look, for example, at Asus tablets.
What does that tell me? It tells me that if I buy a samsung device, they'll treat me well for the 14 day return period, and then treat me like dirt. It tells me that a samsung device is a FOOLISH investment.
Samsung, you will NOT be getting my money for my next tablet purchase. I don't care how thin it is or how fast it might be. I'd rather have a supported product that's slightly thicker or has a slightly slower processor.
Take care
Gary

AT&t chat about one xl jelly bean roll out.

Hey peeps just for kicks I contacted customer un-support to inquire about hox at&t jelly bean update. The following is my chat, where the tech gets mad at me for, asking them to send me the update since they cant fix it.Then he ends the chat, when I say his pre-written statement's are insulting, and the at&t devs are amateur's. I thought it was hilarious, this guy did not.
Thank you for your patience! Your AT&T Representative will be with you shortly.
Welcome! You are now chatting with 'Geofrey Holt '
Geofrey Holt : Hello Blaz1nr, My name is Geoffrey and I would be happy to help you today. Please give me one moment to look up your account information.
Geofrey Holt : Just so I understand your problem your phone is not updated to jellybean?
blaz1nr: I know for sure you recieved to software upgrade from HTC over 3 months ago.Is your dev team having problems? No one x is receiving the update its not even slated for roll out, according to sources at at&t.
blaz1nr: So when can i expect update this?
Geofrey Holt : Have you checked your phone to see if it is available for a update?
blaz1nr: I just told you its not available to any U.S at&t htc one xl.You at at&T have not provided the update yet. You guys are operating these devices on my airwaves, the publicly owned bandwidth that is leased by the FCC in the public's best interest. Yet somehow we pay alot more for service that is accompanied by terrible customer service, and updates & support clearly are a part of that. This also hints as to why AT&T has lost most its customer base, and become rated dead last for customer service by Consumer Reports and other rating agencies
blaz1nr: I was asking you to check your data base, and tell me when this update will be allowed by at&t.
Geofrey Holt : Just one moment please.
Geofrey Holt : At&t is trying to put this update out as soon as possible. They are pushing this update out in batches. And we do not know when those batches are pushed out. You will receive a text message on your phone when it is available for your phone.
Geofrey Holt : I know this can be frustrating but we are trying to get these updates out as quickly as possible.
blaz1nr: That's exactly it.You have no idea when it will push out.And do you think its ok that only at&t held this update from its customers? I don't appreciate being giving a sorry just wait answer.I know for sure at&t has not even began to do this.So what your tell me is a total lie,or you know nothing about the company you work for.The one xl+ has received two its already going to the next platform again. This phone came much much later. As I expected we the customer are left, with terrible support and no real answers as to why the whole world has this update and we cannot. We the customer own your terrible company, and we demand the same respect other carriers give their customers.
Geofrey Holt : Just to confirm your your HTC one x that you are using is on # ****?
blaz1nr: nope ****
Geofrey Holt : Once a update is released by the manufacture at&t puts it through testing. once they are confidant that it will work with the at&t network it will be released. I do apologize but we do not have a release date.
Geofrey Holt : Are you still with me in this chat?
blaz1nr: well just to let you know,it does work,in fact the version from Canada, works perfect and its from a different carrier altogether.Almost 15 years as a customer and this what I get.Ill tell you what send me the update, ill have it stable and ready to push by tonight. That's how fast I can do it,and I have had no schooling for this at all.But i can for sure fix this entire update in under one day.By my self. This just proves someone like me that can build this from source with no training at all,is far more quilified then your own dev team. This is very sad.You should be ashamed of your subpar dev team.SEND ME THE UPDATE ILL FIX IT.This is total bull%h!&.
Geofrey Holt : Once a manufacturer releases an update to us, AT&T puts it through rigorous testing to ensure its compatibility with our network. Only once we are satisfied that the update will work properly on our systems without causing a negative customer experience will we then make it available for our AT&T branded devices. This can sometimes be a lengthy process that may include working with the manufacturer and developers to make needed changes. There have been some instances in the past where we have simply never released updates due to conflicts and unresolvable problems. At this time the update you are looking for is not yet available for your AT&T device. I am sorry, but we will need to wait to see if and when it is approved by our testing team.
blaz1nr : Well it seems you didn't actually read anything i typed did you? Did you read anything it at all? I tell you what, your pre-written answers are insulting.Do you think were stupid? Your not pushing it because you put it on the end of support list.Which you never stated. You have done nothing but insult my intelligence. This is very typical of so called tech support at at&t.

The guy was telling the truth as he knows it, and can only tell you what he is being told. Customer service reps don't do the testing, not part of the certification team, and have nothing to do with the release of the update. All he can tell you is what he is being told, and what he is scripted to say.
There is a 17 page thread on the AT&T community forum, with similar complaints as you. There is an AT&T community manager that has been active on that thread named jamileh, and she has been a bit more forthcoming than the CS agent you chatted with. But she didn't have any better of an answer. She understands that people are *****ing and moaning about the delay, and she has been bugging the certification team at least twice a week to get any information on when it will be released. All they will tell her is that its being worked on, but there is no ETA. That is probably as much information as you are going to get from any AT&T employee.
Anyway, why would someone complain about such a thing on XDA? This is the place for phone mods and custom ROMs. Just unlock the bootloader, load a custom ROM, and be done with it.
First off the guy is a high yield account rep. This meaning 15 or more devices on one account. Secondly he does in fact know, that the update was canceled due to eod listing. So that being said, and since I chat with the same guy multiple times. He has stated before that the eod list is visible, and they can tell you if it's not going to update. But At&t policy is never to say your device is eod. So before you blindly post comments, it's good to know the facts.

Then why the hell did you bother him? Especially if you already know the answer to your question? Just load a custom ROM and stfu

I just tracked it down. My head hurts.
At this point, there is no doubt in my mind that the update is being delayed intentionally for marketing reasons. It will probably come out eventually, but I would guess not until at least a month after the One is available.
I followed all of those posts on the AT&T forums for some time about two months ago...just a lot of butt hurt people all raging on the death star, some with purpose and some without. I especially love all the people threatening to leave because of a software update
Listen, that's the reason why we have the brilliant minds here in this community. READ, MOD, and be MERRY! If people don't like what AT&T has to offer, then there is competition out there, but I hear the same from Verizon customers frequently.
None of these companies promise or really owe any of us anything and to expect otherwise is naivety.
I feel a little sorry for that CSR...

18 pages now.
I dropped out of that thread a while ago. Its basically just page after page of people complaining over and over. Often just the same people complaining again and again. Beating a dead horse, and its not going to make AT&T move any faster.

EOD? You mean EOL (end of life)?
End of day?
Eve of Destruction?
AT&T (as well as other carriers) tend to keep phones around for quite a while. So I doubt the One X is EOL. They are still selling the Vivid (8 months older than the One X) as new (not a refurb).
Closing this before it really gets out hand

Help the Cause Please

Hi guys this is my first time posting although I've been reading these forums for quite some time now
First of all i'd like to thank all the devs that work so hard for this phone. We all appreciate it immensely. :good:
Now down to business.
I've started a petition for LG and T-Mobile to release an update for the T-Mobile G2x (LG-P999).
I know this seems pretty useless at this point but hey its better to try then do nothing at all
I'd really appreciate it if everyone here could show there support and spread this around.
Petition: wwwchangeorg/petitions/lg-and-t-mobile-update-the-lg-g2x-lg-p999-to-android-4-x
Please also visit the lg forums and voice your opinion.
supportlgforumcom/lg/topics/g2x_owners_reply_if_you_want_android_4_0_ics_for_our_g2xs
Were bound to get noticed eventually. If it fails at least we kinda tried to put a thorn in LG's side xD
Thanks guys, please no negativity, im just trying to help us all out after all.
(BTW had to remove periods after www, change, support, and lgforum since im noob and can't post links )
There is a difference between negative and realistic. IMHO it would be a waste of time considering nexus 4 and EULA for the g2x.

I think doing nothing is more of a waste of time. It's really not that hard to just go and comment at least on the lg forums.
If you go to the lg forums you will find a this written by an LG employee:
RyanLG (Official Rep) 4 days ago
"Nope, those are just the crickets from another thread I recently posted. There is not much else to add to this 160+ comment thread that has been of popular topic for the past year. All I can say is the Thrill finally received a software update to fix many of it's previous hardware and software issues. Nobody saw that coming in a million years and what do you know, it happened! And ever since the complaints have subsided substantially about that particular device and the praise for it is at an all time high. I fully understand the complaints and frustration from all the G2X owners, you deserve some sort of resolution. The best thing you can do at this point is let your voice be heard whether it be here, but more so to LG customer support, the carrier or anywhere else. I will escalate this thread to the top with hopes of some sort of resolution. A similar process benefited the Thrill, so who knows."
What he said is what im doing, trying to get people to voice their opinion about the phone.
Also what he said about the LG Thrill gives me some hope.
If you don't wanna sign the petition i understand but at least go to the official lg forums and "complain".
It may be a long shot and will probably never happen but why not try at least, like RyanLG said, "who knows"?
Maybe just maybe if we get a lot of people to show their frustration and support for an upgrade a miracle will happen.
Won't know for sure unless we try is all i'm trying to say
Also, since development is practically at a stand still what else is there to do?
Rummage through xda forums everyday hoping for something new? x.x
Maybe we can reach out to other developers with lots of experience to look at the radio problem or build Hackfest roms? We basically only have Maz left and we can't expect him to do everything for us.

Maz is put through maintaining a gingerbread kernel on top of a new project that some users wanted, fixing bluetooth calling. There were some other projects maz had set put to do also. Such a nice guy but lets look at this situation realistically. This phone is a 'sunken ship'.

That'd be awesome if we could contact other devs to help with the ril issue. Problem I see there though is that I'm sure many of those devs are working hard on other projects. Plus, the ril issue is something that is really difficult to resolve (if even possible?) and Idk if more devs would even be of help at this point but nonetheless the more devs working on this phone the better.

I agree maz is super awesome! To me it seems like he's the only dev currently doing anything. Im using his latest beta kernel and my phone is not only snappy but also has awesome battery life so much props to him.
And I have accepted that this phone is a sunken ship but I will never lose hope
The phone is 2 years old at this point in the States. The end of life of the device through T-Mobile was January 2012. The hardware was pretty much a prototype version of the current Tegra 2 platform, and we'll never know the proper way to code for it. The RIL issues will never get fixed, nor did they have a shot to be fixed. If you're still on the device, you're either like me and too poor to afford an upgrade, or somehow stuck in a deal for the phone. If you used an EIP through T-Mo, you can pay it back early instead of monthly and get yourself a new one on the plan.
In the end it comes down to knowing exactly what phones are going to be popular for developers. Nexus devices and the Galaxy line are where you want to be if you want good support. That's where all the action is and will be for some time. The HTC One shows some promise, but with AT&T locking the bootloader, that's one less carrier brand that can be unlocked.
Pick wisely and don't bother with this stuff. Getting your hopes up will only cause you more anger when the truth comes around.
"The hardware was pretty much a prototype version of the current Tegra 2 platform, and we'll never know the proper way to code for it."
Interesting. Are you saying that the entire Optimus 2X line of phones was not based on the Tegra 2 platform used on other phones, but rather an incomplete prototype (probably because they were rushing it to market), or that this is only true for the G2X (aka P999), hence the differences between it and the other models?
