I bought a brand new Sensation 4G 31 days ago, found out it had horrible issues with Wifi (Which is how I make 90% of my calls), and tried to return it (Around a week ago). I was told if I came back another day to see the manager, I wouldn't have to pay the restocking fee (50$) because it was defective, so I did. The second day, I was told that no, I could NOT get the restocking fee revoked and that I HAD TO have the original credit card to return the phone. I was not told that earlier, and it was not in the device return policy. It was impossible to get that card, but I offered to get the card number (They said no), leave the phone with them until I could get the card (A few weeks. They said no), or use the already paid funds to pay for the phone bill (They said no) They told me I had until the 21st to try to return it. I came in today and I find out that no, I had until the 20th to return it. So I try for a replacement because hey, whatever... It's just as defective, but they revoke the restocking fee and let me use a different credit card (some money had to be recharged)
I feel cheated and lied to. The Wifi death grip (Though its more like a touch) is a huge issue for me. It means I can't watch netflix, play games, browse in landscape, or receive/send phone calls (I use internet calling). Yes, I understand there should be constraints when returning a phone and having the same credit card keeps things orderly. But refusing to budge from that position for something that's not in their return policy, telling me to keep trying another day until I'm out of my 30 day return period, and then immediately doing everything when I give up and decide to get a replacement phone? It's unfair.
(Yes, this is a bit of a rant, I'm sorry. I'm going to try to contact the regional manager. I really liked T-Mobile...)
You have to realize though no matter what phone you have if you put your hand over the WiFi antenna the signal will drop. No changing the physics of it, 2.4ghz is not happy with us water sacks lol.
The ordeal they put you through is inexcusable though, definitely complain until they make it right.

I heard it doesnt, and I haven't been able to connect to the 5 GHz band on my router. Either way, 5 GHz has a very short range and isn't terribly useful unless you're in the same room as the router.

And yes, that's why the first two attempts were trying to get a refund, not an exchange. When they finally told me that no, you actually can't return it today, I broke down and asked for a replacement hoping it would be better. I don't get wifi even if I'm down the hallway of my router... (15ft, same floor, doors open)
Strange. Lower end HTC phones have it but the Sensation doesn't...I think it might be a software issue.
Anyway, onto the point of the thread. Did you get the back cover exchanged as well when you attempted to exchange the phone? That's the main culprit of the issue. HTC is also giving free replacements for the back cover if you call them.
If you look back a month ago through my history, I posted a video showing my Sensation doesn't suffer from the deathgrip issuevand remains at full bars in the basement and second floorbof my house. It also works outside aswell. The router us on my first floor. Anyway, why don't you try a better router if u can't return it?

I got an entirely new phone when I replaced it.
And yes, I was looking through old posts about the WiFi deathgrip and saw your posts/videos, jrwingate6, but there were also the people who returned their phone 5 times and still had issues. If it's the phone, it seems to effect a huge batch of them. If it's the router, I've been in hotels and houses and have had issues constantly. The router I currently have is supposed to be strong, and it dropped down an open hallway (I don't know the specs). I'll be on campus after August, where I can buy a router for my room, but will be at the mercy of the WiFi gods anytime I go outside. I bought the phone to call mostly over WiFi, hoping to avoid a cellular plan if I can help it, because the campus is covered in routers.
Sorry to hear that mate....but I hv sensation that too covered with a gel pack cover and I tried all possible grips but I never hv death grip...dt know why...I even followed the death grip video bt still on strength 5....

Yea, I forgot to mention. I have heard of a gel case fixing the deathgrip grip issues for some. Also, have you set the phone to max wifi performance? Make sure the router is set to its max transmit power as well.

Sorry your having so much trouble bro. It sounds like if its not the router than you must have gotten your sensation from a bad batch. My router is downstairs in one corner of the house and my room upstairs in the opposite side of the house and my speed test shows speeds around 10mps. Death grip still a issue, but my N1 had a slight death grip, so I'm used to it.
I bought those rubber cases from a T-Mobile store and it only made the issue worse. It's constantly a bar lower with the case on, and any pressure (even gravity) causes it to lose the remaining 3 bars.
I had a Nexus One since the day it came out and loved that thing. I didn't have any WiFi issues with it, but it started dying on me. Wouldn't charge, couldn't connect it to a PC, volume down button started degrading. Still, for an 18 month phone, it was a champ.

I am seeing from your post reply, you say you have no deathgrip issues with your htc sensation on which you are using a gel case, can you please confirm that you are 100% sure you are not facing any deathgrip issues with the HTC sensation in regard to the WiFi Signal,
Also please tell me what brand of Gel case are you using for your htc sensation and what is its cost.
thanks your reply in advance

I dropped the Captivate yesterday. Because I had a silicon case and screen protector, seems like nothing happen, not even a small scratch. Hell no. After that the phone just couldn't send or receive any call!!! Calling from my friends' phones: just one ring and then it went to Voice mail box. Trying to call my friends: not even a ring, just "Call ended". Well, what was going on? I tried everything: switch the simcard to another phone, worked fine! Hard reset, flash back to stock, didn't help!
AT&T is sending me a new one (well, probably refurbished), but I just feel so disappointed with that. Only one drop! My previous Samsung Omnia has been dropped so many times, some times even the back cover and battery was out, but it still works smoothly!
sounds like you dropped it just right to severely damage the antenna
Man that sucks luckily you didn't scratch it up and they really couldn't pin point the problem and blame you

Dropped mine today will running to my car. It landed face down (yikes!) and slid about 5 feet (YIKES!!!). I picked it up assuming the glass would be cracked or at least nicely scratched or the phone would simply not work. To my surprise, the screen looks totally unscathed and the phone still works fine. I have some lovely scratches on the plastic casing either side of the screen which sucks but they are hardly noticeable.

I had my phone go straight to voicemail once, i thought that was wierd. Other than that nothing out of the ordinary. The phone works well for me including the GPS, which I know a lot of people complained about.
So I was probably unlucky though. Of course the good thing is the phone has no scratch, but that is what I would expect. I dont know if the drop affected the antenna, as I could still see at least 3 bars of signal. Just weird. Good thing that you guy, who have dropped the phone at least one, did not experience the same problem as mine. So I guess I can still love the Captivate though . Otherwise, I hate to see the chuckle in my room-mate's face, who has an iPhone

I hope that'd be one of those nervous "ha ha we're in the same boat now, mine came with a damaged antenna out of the box" chuckles. j/k
Anyway, that's weird that it still shows a few bars but doesn't connect.. Maybe you somehow shook part of the antenna's connector loose?
Well, I guess the silicon/rubber case should help a little bit to avoid things like that happen. I cant imagine how bad it was if I didnt have the case.
ive dropped my cappy numerous times. thank god it has the bodyglove (while waiting for the otterbox) which seemed to take the abuse well. i think you just got unlucky
yeah sounds like u damaged the antenna
I would try changing the similar card before anything. I work for att and a lot of times people drop their phones and as a result have no service and I just change the similar card and it works 99% of the time.

That's because most people ARE stupid.
I've dropped mine once or twice but no problems that I've noticed. Not even a scratch.
The gray plastic and metal back cover mark easily but the black plastic and glass are very tough the Samsung videos prove that. But glass is glass and is far from indestuctable. Other than that I have completely disasembled my phone and it is very rugged. Not much room for things to break. A strong cast aluminum chassis backs the touch screen and strong feeling plastic back plate. Everything has good support. I've dropped mine many times without fear and have no ill effects.
My friends iphone 4 however has a broken screen and his insurance is $15 a month. Mine is $5. That makes me feel great about my decision to abandon apple.

I hope nothing happened here, but my Inspire just slid off the back of the couch and feel about 3' onto a lightly carpeted wood floor. No scuffs or screen damage, but suddenly my signal strength seems to be in the crapper. However that could just coincide with AT&T twaddling around with expanding their 4G coverage. So I'm wondering if it's just my imagination, or do I have a problem to worry about?

Check to see if the SIM cover isn't cracked. If im not mistaken, the antenna is located there and the wifi antenna is located on the battery cover. Try to remove and reinsert the SIM cover to see if that helps.
No worries there, I just dropped my phone to the concrete floor from 4ft...
It landed with its corner, and spun a few times.... (horrible sight to see)
phone still functions, screen didn't crack (although there is a very tiny nick on the screen which I can't really see after I put on a new screen protector, the old one is messed up, of course), and everything works, just that there are some minor scuffs on the phone now
I gotta say, this phone is well built, and if this had happened to my old Touch Pro.... man, the phone will be gone already.
here is a picture to prove that the speed is still great!
Thanks for the replies. Turns out everything is alright. Must have been a problem with the tower that happened to coincide with the drop.
I had ill effects after a slight drop and it turned out to be a bad SIM card. I went to the AT&T store, they pulled it out, put it in their tester, came up with an error, swapped me out and I was out the door in less than 5 minutes.
With all the years we have had AT&T, I still can't see where people have room to complain about "bad customer service". We have yet to see it and have this account with 5 lines for 5+ years.

At least they don't sell you a 4g phone and charge extra every month for it when the nearest 4g is 100 miles away.
They all have their issues.
I've had plenty of drops although my inspire is protected with an Otterbox Commuter. Not a single scratch, only thing is that it unseats my SD card on occasions so I have to pull off the case & cover and push it back in. A minor annoyance but well worth it.

Just to play devil's advocate, how are they to know where you live? I have been to many different ATT stores that aren't in my town.
As for the address showing up in their system, I'm listed at my house but I currently live 355 miles away at college; they can't just take your word or assume you know?

Has anyone else noticed the drop in WiFi signal when you cup the phone in your hand? Put the phone in your left hand so your palm is on the left side with your fingers on the right. Watch the WiFi signal tank.
It's not a big deal nor do I know if it affects anything - just a funny observation.
Just confirmed this with WIFI Analyzer. I would lose about ~10 db whenever I cupped the bottom and the second I released it went back to normal. Must mean that the WIFI antenna is on the bottom of the device. Not that it matters much as 10 db is a minimal drop.
Very interesting, when not cupping the device returns to normal. This was with my case off. The second I put my case on my WIFI signal plummeted while not even touching it. I use a silicon case that just wraps around the device. After removing the case the signal shoots back up.
Weird, huh? Mine will drop from four WiFi bars down to one.

It's not happening for me. Weird.
I know that the antennas on the TB run through the back cover. If you open the Battery/SD/SIM compartment cover, you will notice some contacts that are in different spots and corresponding contacts on the cover. These are antenna extensions. Thusly, covering the back of the phone will drop your signal pretty good. Try holding it in a gapped grip (fingertips only instead of cupping) or hold it at the bottom (near the kickstand) and it will alleviate it.
Why it attenuates so much when you have a silicon cover on boggles my mind. I have a soft interior and hard edge silicone/plastic two piece case on and maybe a small attenuation of WiFi and Cell signal. One bar max, a few DB in stats. Dropping from full bars to one is crazy for just the cover.
You think cell phone manufacturers would have learned from Apple....
the desire s has this issue really bad. my nexus one does it too. i've been able to cup my phone and drop cellular AND wifi bars on pretty much every phone i've owned, nokia n95, n97, etc. some just have it worse than others so you may not notice it on certain devices. but its always existed.
if you are standing next to your router, than the signal will over power any attenuation you try to impose on the device. so in the same room you wont notice, but far away with weaker signal and you will attenuate for sure.

Though they did make one of the biggest errors.
That's true but Apple made Antennuation a household term.... Kinda lol.
Apple had a problem with signal? AT&T, aka A Fee & Fee, had users too dumb to know they were using too much data? It was an iBlame issue. My daily rant quota.
Seriously, though, with internal antennas, this can be an issue. I have not verified if my signal attenuated or not, nor has it affected call quality or data transmission that I am aware of.

lol. But do not make too much fun of them, they may cash in our country's debt..real trouble then.
Ok after the previous journey with hd2's thermal problems and since i got a new htc sensation, i found myself a little bored until either devs or htc gives us some s-off for our phones. So i've heard of this death grip issue and want to give it a try to find a hardware fix for it. Some of you may know me for the geeky technical approaches, so i'll try to get some stuff working here.
Anyway, i have the Sensation from about 4-5 days. I'm yet to determine the seriousness of this issue and how much wireless transmissions are affected.
After inspecting the device construction, it's simple to assume that the reason for the death grip is an interference between the antenna emissions and the EM interference from the human body (hand).
I'll be conducting a series of measurements using some hardware tools to find out the exact cause. Only after this i can begin to work for a fix.
So far this future fix must comply with these conditions:
1. NOT to void the warranty. The fix have to be removable and the phone brought to it's original condition.
2. More easier and safe then my hd2 reheating thread . The solution must be clear, simple and must make use of generic household materials.
3. The death grip issue must be solved in a satisfactory way so that the fix itself is worth the trouble.
This is the start of a new project, it may take a while for some real results to come and the first thing to be determined is if the issue is really user solvable.
So, wish me luck.. i guess i'll be starting tomorrow and post some pictures/things i find during the process.
Good luck, I'm also tempted to start some experiments. BTW it might be worth having a extra Back cover to due testing with. You can get one from HTC.
well, that's the idea. the method must be non invasive for that back cover and must also present no risk in damaging it.
I was so annoyed by the touchscreen issue I never got round to this one :\
I wanted to test if the problem could be "reduced" by simply adding a strip of aluminium foil along the cover... You can probably come up with something better
Thank you for helping!
Thanks! If you can even slightly improve things, you'd be a god. I love this phone, but the WiFi dying (in landscape) is the one issue that constantly nags. [:

Well it really depends on where your router is and how strong is the signal... I've tested mine with wall between it dropped significantly and even disconnects, while next to it only a bar or more but return to normal state after a few moments. But it shouldn't do that, and I've got asus wl520-gc router.

FOTA reduced the death grip issues for me..
i will be making some physical measurements on how the phone's transceiver produces and handles 2.43 Ghz ISM type signals. At this moment i haven't tested my device for the death grip but like i've said, i have some spare time and want to help on this.
By using an oscilloscope i will try see what's happening to the signal level in real time.

Looking forward to results. Godspeed.
I hate to sound like an Apple fanboy but I was not able to replicate this "accidentally."
Now it might have to do with the different frequencies of the Bell verison of phone, or my signal strength.
I watched a video of someone placing the phone flat on their hand and the signal strength completely dropping off. While I was able to drop a bar of cellular signal, it was far from the video.
I did not get any noticeable drop in wifi.
I went to 3 different tmobile stores and had 3 replacement phones. They all had death grip.
also don't think its EM. I lose wifi signal by covering with single sheet of paper.

is it possible to solve it with hard cover... i read smowhere that with a silicone one won't solve it.

i have the same problem
Hi all! New poster here, old reader
I've just gone thru my second Sensation now (in 3 days), had 2 DOA's in a row. The first had the blue light "leakage" down at the home button and the headphone jack was defect. The other one had a battery cover that did'nt quite fit, the screen would creek and move some when you pressed it, the volume rocker was loose and it had touch issues.
I'm VERY dissapointed with the original Sensation and I've never used a DOA before this phone my entire life and now 2 in a row.
Now I got a gift card with the money instead, since I don't dare to pick up my third Sensation from the same store (the first 2 had the same manfacturing date on the battery cover) so now I'm not sure what to do?
Are there any "perfect" Sensations out there? Did HTC do a sloppy job on these phones (always had HTC smartphones before, and no major issues). This can't just be bad luck or can it?
Cheers!
Bad luck.
I've had mine since June or so and I haven't had any problems with it. No real Wifi death grip, no loose back cover, nothing.
Get one from a different store.
All manufacturers are having quality issues, or at least we're hearing about them more.
The more "trouble" consumers cause shops by returning faulty phones the more pressure will be put on the factories to improve.
Persevere, the Sensation is a top of the range phone
I bought mine since June and it doesn't have any problems too. All working great. I suppose its just bad luck for you.
Thank for the replies so far!
Ok, seems (so far) that I've had bad luck. I REALLY hope thats the issue, cause I REALLY love the phone, the design, the hardware etc. But I just can not pay all that money for a premium phone that ain't.... well premium
I took the gift card for the sole reason to try and buy the phone at another store, maybe it was a faulty batch or something, who knows. But two phones in a row, with the same production date (which I can't really remember right now june fifth China I believe, have to check when I get home) wich are both faulty has really made me think twice.
So the news you guys bring so far is really good news to me!
Hopefully, the next replacement you get is a perfect one! It's really an awesome phone and it's kinda sad to get missed out due to some defects. ):
Mine has a bit of play in the cover but that's just how it is so doesn't bother me.
Mines is good so far.... Maybe that store is selling fakes?

Nah, no fakes. It's one of our largest/most spread stores here in Sweden (deals with phones, computers, TV's etc etc).
The thing is. I'm really NO "sitting under the magnifying glas looking for dead pixels" kindof guy, so these phones really was faulty.
According to the replies of this thread though it really seems like bad luck. I will try to buy another one, in a diffrent store (well not by name but location atleast) and see if I get a normal working HTC premium sensation!
It just your luck...
What they are actually doing is giving you reconditioned or refurbished phones. These are cheaper for them and are usually ones that have had faults i.e firmware flash failures, broken screens etc.Demand a BRAND NEW DEVICE as they have to provide you with a new fully working phone when you get it.If you are in the UK we have trading standards that you could contact to start a complaint if they refuse you a new device

Ask to try out the replacement in the shop to give it a good going over to make sure there are no obvious faults
I've had mine since June as well. I get nothing but compliments on it and honestly, its the best phone I've ever had. I must agree with everyone else when I say buy another one. I'm sure like everyone else, you will be happy too.
revolutionary, CM7, launcher pro. faux123 1.67 kernel, sim unlocked sensation 4G
Well you guys convinced me! I will go get another one today actually! Thanks for all the replies, it's been really helpfull to me!
I'll keep you updated!
same thing happened to me, all replacements they sent me had dead pixels.
though, i used the replacement phones to get free accessories. lol
Just got my third Sesnsation (since thursday) a few hours ago. So far it's just perfect! Sweet! I has NONE of the flaws my 2 previous devices had.
Just to makr sure I got one from another batch this time I got a newer serial number, made in Taiwan instead of China. So far so good!
It pays of to be a whiny ol' customer sometimes

Absolutely, the more legitimate trouble customers cause by returning faulty goods, the more the stores will put pressure on the manufacturers to improve their quality

Mine has a dead pixel but im reluctant to get anbother in case it has more problems, like my mate having 1 million (exagerated) Desires that were faulty.1 pixel i can deal with and i think ill wait till i get a few more scratches on this beauty before i demand a new one
I'm also on my second phone. The first one was just bad all round, and nothing seemed to work properly. The second has terrible call quality and keeps dropping calls. the wifi also keeps dropping out. one minute I have four bars and the next I have nothing. it's like the "death grip" problem but still does it even if i'm not touching the phone. Also have the back cover problem and the screen freezing problem. I love the phone but it's the phone part thats always faulty, it is by far the worst reception I have had on a phone. Oh and just checked mine and it was made in Taiwan.

Time to start asking O2 for compensation along with a replacement phone, they're normally good at giving credits to customer's accounts. I got £15 once just by making the woman in the call centre laugh
