Senate antitrust leader opposes AT&T/T-Mobile merger - T-Mobile LG G2x

so if your like me your starting to see att pump these commercials out like the merger is done. What this is, is a marketing campaign by att to appeal to the masses and make them think its been done. It has not.

Agreed, left them once. Not going back. I switched to a company called Simple Mobile. Uses all of the same freq the T-Mo does so it bounces off T-Mo towers.
Service is $60.00 monthly for unlimited everything. I REFUSE to ever use AT&T again.

Monopoly's are never good for the consumer. I'm glad to see we have wise people in government that aren't fully corrupt.
Anyone who thinks this merger is a good thing is either a fool or has an agenda.

Thanks for the info, never heard of simple mobile, so I looked it up. It seems like a great idea, although I didn't see the G2x listed as a supported phone. Are you using the G2x on their plan? If so is everything functional?

I am using the G2x currently with everything working. Have CM7, fauxs kernel and the google stuff loaded on. The only issue I had at first was getting the APN set to stay on the network. I tweaked a few things in the T-Mo APN and have been fine since. If you go that route pm me and I"ll help you with the APN settings.

Isn't Simple Mobile powered by T-Mobile's network?

The next big event that will influence the merger approval discussions is mid-August. That's when T-Mobile's going to announce their Q2 results. All of the analysts that follow them are expecting the results to be bloody. Q1 was awful and that was before the merger was announced. Depending on how bad the results are, questions will start being raised about T-Mobile's viability as a stand-alone company. Then everyone will start focusing on protecting the jobs of the 42K T-Mobile employees. There are quite a few twists and turns left before this is decided.

damn
this sounds nice...........well for the hobbs guy im sure he will be rich very soon.

The bad part is att is doing this on purpose. The more they run people off from Tmobile the worse their physical numbers will look. The easier it will be to acquire them if they look in danger of collapse. It's horse****. Att has no interest in the customer base. If they did they would not be using these tactics. It's all about the radio freq's. I wish cricket had more.coverage in the southern states. I'd jump.

Good news, I hope this doesn't happen for all the US sake. Here in Canada we had 3 big players forever and have got the shaft as a result, recently we got some new players and Canadians are benefiting from it. I loathe to imagine what the prices would be for you guys with 2.5 big players, your prices are already pretty ridiculous.

Was just about to post this.
I think it will be good for us if AT&T decides to add their frequencies to T-Mobile's towers. The purchase is expected to take a year and I wonder if it will be blocked by the SEC.
Does that mean AT&T wireless can actually get worse, now that they will (supposedly) gobble up t-mobile?

Well in "the old days" I would have seen the SEC letting this go about as far as I can throw it, but after changing the laws to allow comcast to become the mega-carrier they are, they'll let this one through as well.
Very unfortunate given that T-Mobile at least has drive to create a decent product.
I guess the old saying is true, if you can't beat em, buy em, lol

In my experience, T-Mo had far LESS than AT&T, tho it's been 5 years since I had T-Mo. With T-Mo, they have so many roaming agreements you can drive across the country and have fairly reliable service the entire way. Not the case with Big Red or Big Mama Blue.

They have about a year head start on HSPA+, but that's about it. No clear direction on LTE tho, so I guess this was written...
Big pink and big blue got hitched! LOL
I'm sure T-mobile customers are jumping for joy after they read this news.
I'm seeing this as being one step closer to getting rid of CDMA.
I wish Cell Phones worked the way they do in Europe. We have too much fragmentation and carrier control in the US.
I have a friend on T-Mobile and he likes the data speeds but the coverage of phone service itself apparently isnt that great all i hear about his how much he complains!!!
Here is some more info from engadget
http://www.engadget.com/photos/atandt-t-mobile-lte-buildout-slides-0/#3984852
Edit: I also read somewhere that it may take a year for this to complete. So no new changes for a while.
NICE!!!!!
I have been to places where there are only tmobile signals! (i did a network search, only tmobile pop up!), but i'm unable to connect cus att wont allow it! i guess this merger will change that!
this means that now after it is complete, we will be able to access t-mobiles hspa+ network with our inspires right? this is great news if we can b/c t-mobiles roll out of hspa+ is far greater than at&t's as of now

Our fight Against VZW & HTC

Scroll to bottom.
If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.
Im not happy about this, if it is or going to happen but even if we root the device, carriers don't have to allow it on their service. After all we did modify the device and thats all they need to use agaianst us...
Yes and since when can they see what we are doing and what else could they find out using that aoftware
oh noes...my porn watching days are coming to an end....
Regarding Tmo, yes they allow tethering for free, but throttle you after 5gb. So I'm not going to jump over there. I don't think rooting should be prevented, but it is understandable that vzw would want to stop unpaid tethering. Unlike Tmo they do charge extra for that.

Honestly, I think they should just make hotspot free after they start tiered plans. They'll get a their money either way.
But this move is something I can totally understand. Do I like it, no. It's a real shame how closed Android is becoming. I never thought we would get to this point, but this time next year, Android might not be open as we'd like it.
Only hope of keeping Android Android is the Nexus line. Hopefully Google starts to bring it to all carriers in a yearly fashion.

So I guess the question is, since the thunderbolt was htc most locked down phone to date, is if any of this root identifying software is located deep inside its code? I'm coming from sprint and the epic 4G and there was code hidden in there called carrier IQ that pretty much logged everything you did on the phone, your calls trxt, usage, whatever. Sounds alarming that it had that ability but what was weird is that even though it was running and functional the actual logging was turned off. I, and a lot of other people, wondered why this would be in a phone and after reading this im thinking sprint made samsung put it in there. So now I'm curious about what verizon asked htc to hide in the thunderbolt?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
2 things. Verizon can see on there computer what software your on. So that right there will immediately through up a red flag. Another thing I'm kinda leaning toward Verizon on this one. For example when 4G hits my area. Verizon customers will increase. Doing so if my neighbor is tethering off his phone constantly then he's taking up all the bandwidth and my quality of service will depreciate. Now if he was capped and paying for tethering he would use it more conservative. I believe this is what Verizon is getting at. It's not about control , its about quality of network service for others.
There's probably no way to sue them bastards... It's their network and this is just a cap in data usage (like they haven't done that already.)
Verizon has been evil since the very beginning. All they wanted was our money, and probably our soul.

These threats are insignificant. Blocking users from rooting their phone would be a loss for all, as it is one of the major reasons for buying Android. If they did so to stop users from tethering, then we'll be seeing a spike in T-Mobile customers as they allow you to tether at your leisure for no additional cost. Being on an open source operating system, it would be illegal for them to tell you how you can use your technology and what modifications you're allowed to make to it.
I'll stay rooted and I will continue to tether via USB and rack up my apparently corporate-rattling 1GB of stolen bandwidth to demo THEIR products. Interesting concept.

Nothing in Apache or GPLv2 prevents them from telling you how you can use your technology, or prevents them from locking down the device.

Hey lets pretend the article is 100% accurate which because P3Droid wrote it I would say has some possibility of being the case, as of this point verizon is not doing anything besides tracking. And no one knows when and if they will do anything else. Theirs a whole lot of what they can do, but besides having a legal and finance department, they also have a marketing department which wont let them unleash a PR nightmare. Taking 1/10 (which is what I believe the current agreed upon number of root users, i may be wrong with this figure) of your smartphone users and either canceling their contracts or killing service on their devices with threat of an ETF would probably amount to over 1 million users with root access being effected. It just wont happen that way, its not logical for them to do it, because with that many users effected it would be all over TV and such.
The only hope that you could sue them would be if they hit you with a ETF, which they probably wouldn't. Most likely their looking for people sharing wifi on their devices with 3rd party apps just like AT&T did and will tack on the mifi hotspot cost to your bill if you continue to do do, and say if you don't like it break your own contract.
If they were to all out attack everyone with root access I would really be shocked, specifically because they would have to most likely cancel everyone contract with no ETF and then users would just flock to sprint. Who regardless of what this article says probably wont follow suit, at least for a few years because of their market share and the Tmobile & at&t merger.
Again the end of this is just my two cents but the beginning is true VZ isnt doing anything besides information gathering at this point.

[Q] Credit for outage

Has anyone heard from Verizon (or from speaking to CSRs) if they are going to be crediting us back a day (or more if this continues) of data or anything to compensate for the fact the network was down.
I know any time I have had data issues and asked for a credit, they always tell me since I have unlimited there is no way for them to credit the amount.. anyone else had any luck?
Unless you're on a corporate account, I doubt they're going to do much and just say that this "slight inconvenience" will give you "more reliable, faster, and further extended coverage, so it was for your own good". lol
I doubt you're going to get credited. And if you do, it'll be what? Maybe $5? Yipee, you can go get a ****ing Happy Meal now.

You want your dollar back? Go ask, I'm sure they'll just pull a dollar out of their pocket just for the lulz.

I complained to them this morning, and explained to them that I work 3rd shift and have felt this from the beginning. After rebooting multiple times, I thought my use of the LTE off radio app had messed up my radio.
I then factory restored and of course that didn't fix the problem. When customer service finally opened I called and explained my frustration and how they could of at least sent Thunderbolt users a text message that it wasn't on the consumers end.
She said that not every TB user is experiencing the problem, so testing everyone wasn't an option and that Google backed up all my settings (yeah right) so she didn't see the problem. I hope you all have better luck.

I'm on the site because I like to tinker with my phone. That doesn't mean that I'm going to cry to Verizon the moment my phone isn't working and demand a few dollars for reimbursement.
This is partly why Verizon charges so much. They have one of the best customer service for a cell phone company... and they have to pay all these people to talk to dumb and annoying people who expect credits and discounts left and right or people that ***** about everything.
But seriously, just do the fix thing and you'll be on 3g, good [temporarily] enough. Its not like 4g costs more than 3g, so without a price difference there's no way to get a credit to your account. If this lasts for a long time then maybe Verizon should do something, lets just hope they fix it soon.
I'm not saying one camp is right or wrong more than the other. But I am saying that I bought the Thunderbolt to replace my original Droid for one major reason: 4G LTE.
For the past 3 weeks that I've owned my 'Bolt, 4G LTE connections have been spotty and very inconsistent. I assumed the reasoning was any of the following:
1. Custom ROMs I've installed.
2. Custom radio I installed.
3. Custom kernels I installed.
At no point did I think it was because of Verizon's 4G LTE not fully "being there".
Now that we are experiencing nationwide 4G LTE outage, this paints a starkly different picture for me than what I had previously thought.
What I think is a fair resolution is for folks to be able to return their Thunderbolts and have their new-every-two reset (if they used it to purchase a Thunderbolt) if they live in an area where 4G LTE coverage was listed.
Whether this outage is a short-term issue or part of a series of long-term growing pains/headaches, I think folks who bought this phone for the 4G should either get 4G or have the opportunity to return the phone. That's fair in my opinion.
M.
I have a slightly used Droid x I will gladly exchange for your TB.
im blown away by how many people think its unreasonable to expect verizon to provide that service that we all pay for. i guess we should all just bend over and take it like all of the PSN/PS3 customers, huh?
This thread is a joke.
If you are posting on this board, then i'm fairly confident that you don't deserve a credit because:
- You most likely temporarily turned on 3G (EVDO) data and are getting just about the same speeds as before
- You probably had your LTE radio switched off
- According to Verizon's policy, messing with these radios, flashing roms, etc... voids your warranty... and i'm sure they don't like giving credits for that.
In all honesty I can feel for the guy/gal who is stuck on 1X right now, while trying to tether so they can download their work mail.... they are the ones who deserve an explanation... and maybe a very small compensation. (what, $5?)

PSN has been out for more than a week. You can't access ANYTHING with their network.
4G LTE has been down for less than 24 hrs. You can still make phones calls and access data, although slowly.
Big difference.
I just think it's silly that people are crying to Verizon when it's been less than 24 hrs. Give them some time to fix it for Christ's sake.

Ok, I'll bite. We pay ~$1/day for data service. So if we simplify and say that for one day things didn't work, then we should get a $1 credit. But data is not completely out. Only 4g data. Since you're not completely out of service, you're not entitled to the entire $1. We could argue all day about how much 4g data service is worth but in reality we can't complain. Data is still $30/month just like it was and still is for 3g customers. Now what exactly do you want a credit for again? Is it really worth it for you to waste an hour or so of your time to get < $1 credited to your account? VZW doesn't have a habit of long outages or treating customers badly so why does everyone want to jump on their back about an outage like this?

just got gx2 having some issues

I just got the phone today me and fiance both got same phone we were told our area had 3g coverage i contacted tmobile support and the tech stated it is not availabe he actually suggested we seek another carrier anyone have any suggestions to getting better quality signal and data...
Since you bought it from Tmob you should ask and get the unlock codes for free and also should be opt out of the early contract termination fee as well because it was not your fault about the coverage area. Don't let them push you around. Stick to your guns that the tmob rep said you would have 3G and yet you do not.
Check with ATT and see if they have better coverage in your area. The G2X can work on ATT networks as well but you would have to do some research on the settings and etc.
Thats my two cents if your gonna leave Tmob and keep the phones.
As for getting better reception or data signal theres pretty much nothing you can do to make it better if the towers aren't there.

Agree with all that, maybe you can get the phone as a Standard rate plan, which they don't offer with smart phones. You can then use it wifi all over the place. And when the merger hits, you might get better reception if they can share antenna....though some say the G2x will not work on any 3G ATT signals.
thanks for the responses
Yea ive been searching around seeing if there was a fix or noticable difference in rooted pre gb releases for better sig/data strength and such i even caled tmo when i got home and spoke with tech rep and he suggested that i just return devices and go to a diff network I felt that was a horrible way to represent the company. Didnt even try or make a feeble attempt to troubleshoot just blew it off to ah well you dont get 3g in your area so to bad basically.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the G2X only works on the 1700mhz 3G band. ATT does not use this band so he would be stuck on 2g, which is exactly the problem he's having with tmobs now.
well i should have gone further in to detail
The issue is in the store i was told that i would be in a 3g area once i got home i was only staring at the letter G on the highway i had 2G but at home now even outside I am at G and tech on the phone said i was in 2g area then proceeded to tell me i should look in to another company problem is ive tried verizon which is incredible service horrible support and sprint which had great customer service but horrid service I can travel to mount vernon and data roam.

Hmmm you might be right and i have to retract my statement cuz now ever since the phone was released it showed that it was quad band and had both bands for tmob and ATT for 2g/3g/4g bands and now LG says its not.
Even Tmobs site showed it had that capability. I'm reading into it now. Thanks for the refresh course.
No one suggested WiFi Calling? I use it at work and its awesome. Really cuts down on battery usage too. Plus WiFi Calling is now FREE on Tmobile so why WOULDN'T you want to use it at home or at work?
Beats paying AT&T for a $100 WiFi Extender and having it come out of your bank of minutes.
Plus WiFi Calling works over standard WiFi, so even at McDonalds it will work.
Of course this is under the assumption that there IS some coverage around your home. If there was NO service then I would probably just look elsewhere. If you can at least make calls in your neighborhood and calls, text, and surf the web at home (using WiFi Calling and WiFi) then that isn't so bad. Text messages work on any network grade. The only issue you'd have with a slower network is data. But if there is decent service "around" your house, then WiFi calling works wonders to make sure you are online around your home.
It would actually be kinda cool to reply on a WiFi router for service because at 10pm I could just pull the plug and cells go off. No kids texting at 2am.

No one really knows but Tmobile is releasing lots of "Quad-band" phones in the event the AT&T merger goes through. They've even stated they ONCE the merger goes through, they will unlock the other frequencies.
So while there is no absolute answer whether our phones are truely quad-band until we crack it open and actually test, it would be odd that it passed FCC, had it listed on the website, and touted as one of the biggest features... only to NOT have no such hardware.
Makes more sense that Tmobile just "locked it up" for now.

There really isn't much the csr over the phone can do. If you don't have service the person on the phone can't magically teleport a tower into your hood.
They offered you the chance to return the phone and get your money back. How else would you like them to proceed when they can't provide you with service?
Thanks all for the responses
Yea thats what ive been doing just got it set up to wifi in the house honestly out and about not that big an issue as i already have everything i need on the phone at that point unless its a game using data based connectivity which i can deal the phone in itself is just to nice for me to let go of and as for the last post honestly youve waited your breathe and I dont appreciate the rudeness really there is no magic tmo fairy to pop out of my ass and stick a new tower in my back yard gosh there goes that idea. but yea def love the phone testing out root lol i couldnt wait day 1 rooted and working on a good rom/kernel combo in the near future you can look forward to me buildling from aosp soon as this has been something i have been nearing for quite a while now just couldnt find a decent enough phone to dev on so be on the look out for the Triumph Rom coming soon to your neck of the woods.
I was rude? I thought I was just being logical and asked what you would have done if you were the csr.
I'm glad you are at least trying the phone out via wifi, 99% of the people here would have ditched it.
well if i mistook you i apologize
But i def would not recommend someone leave my business for another without prior checking thoroughly to see what other options there may be this guy spent 5 minutes on the phone with me he was in tech support and did no do any literally anything to troubleshoot why i was listed in a 2g area but only getting 1g was my big issue but honestly ill take this over sprint any day i cannot leave the house 5 minutes in any direction without data roaming so just pushed over dark and sin with faux kernel going to set it up and test drive I will be working up some gb roms once official release is out which from the reads i have found is only sometime soon. heres to hoping.

switching to VZW.. questions

I'm thinking about switching to VZW for ST but my husband is kinda iffy about the bills. We both own ST S3 and love them. But data speeds are really slow.
My questions are.. I have been told that VZW has the same data speeds as ST. Anyone know if this is true?
We now pay about $100 bucks a month unlimited calls and text. Unlimited data UP TO 2.5 than your speeds are slowed "throttled".
I'm I silly to think I could get the same package or close to what ST offers through VZW? I'm looking at 2 phones.

Stay away from Verizon! Not only does their customer service suck but they spy on every customer and know of everything that is on your phone!

I think your statement is a little unfounded. Let's just say if I did the stuff I do on 4g on comcast without vpn comcast would be sending me emails to stop. Verizon has never done that. Verizon could potentially spy on you but they don't at least not to the extent of comcast. Another thing to note is if you put files on your phone via USB Verizon doesn't have a way to see them. Don't get me wrong I am no fan of Verizon but Verizon is by no means big brother. Customer service isn't great I'll give you that but they sure do make up for that in coverage and reliability. Other than the differences in price, coverage, and customer service the big four are all the same so if you think Verizon spy's on you they all do.
It's not unfounded. My GS3 on contract with them is having problems. Technical support knew every app, every setting and proceeded to ask about what certain files were that are on my memory card! I'm not into conspiracy theories, but they knew everything about my phone.

Verizon kinda does "spy" on your phone. Although, it's not unannounced. Verizon added "Remote diagnostic utility" in an update waaaay back in the day. I think this was our VRALG7 or VRALG1 ICS update. You can read about it on AC.
Yes, I do remember this receiving publicity in 2012. They (Verizon) are supposed to ask you before activating it of course.

I guess this is just another reason to go aosp. Pretty messed up if you ask me. They should of made us put in a secret pin to tell the techs in order to use that function.

I hear you on that, although I've been on that AOSP train for quite some time. Idk if I recall the exact name of the diagnostic tool in the rom itself though. Part of me feels like it is removed from the base roms but idk if I'm mistaken.
Sadly Verizon is the only option in my area. I'd to do a rom and get off touchwiz but when I got my phone it already had the 4.3 update on it so it's locked down now.

Due to the Verizon Remote Diagnostic utility, Verizon only has direct access to your phone when you call NOT whenever they feel like. If you can prove otherwise, you might have a claim for invasion of privacy.
