[Q] Credit for outage - Thunderbolt General

Has anyone heard from Verizon (or from speaking to CSRs) if they are going to be crediting us back a day (or more if this continues) of data or anything to compensate for the fact the network was down.

I know any time I have had data issues and asked for a credit, they always tell me since I have unlimited there is no way for them to credit the amount.. anyone else had any luck?

Unless you're on a corporate account, I doubt they're going to do much and just say that this "slight inconvenience" will give you "more reliable, faster, and further extended coverage, so it was for your own good". lol

I doubt you're going to get credited. And if you do, it'll be what? Maybe $5? Yipee, you can go get a ****ing Happy Meal now.

[email protected]
You want your dollar back? Go ask, I'm sure they'll just pull a dollar out of their pocket just for the lulz.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk

Doubt it. Unless you missed calls or had absolutely no signal, I really don't think they'll give you credit. But thats just my guess.

I dont want credit for the data.. i want something for the huge inconvenience this outage is causing me... Imma go ***** n see what I can get...

You're on a site...for people who love their phones....Just sayin'.

I complained to them this morning, and explained to them that I work 3rd shift and have felt this from the beginning. After rebooting multiple times, I thought my use of the LTE off radio app had messed up my radio.
I then factory restored and of course that didn't fix the problem. When customer service finally opened I called and explained my frustration and how they could of at least sent Thunderbolt users a text message that it wasn't on the consumers end.
She said that not every TB user is experiencing the problem, so testing everyone wasn't an option and that Google backed up all my settings (yeah right) so she didn't see the problem. I hope you all have better luck.

No, you still have data... you just dont have your LTE. I would laugh at anyone requesting credit lol...

I'm on the site because I like to tinker with my phone. That doesn't mean that I'm going to cry to Verizon the moment my phone isn't working and demand a few dollars for reimbursement.

This is partly why Verizon charges so much. They have one of the best customer service for a cell phone company... and they have to pay all these people to talk to dumb and annoying people who expect credits and discounts left and right or people that ***** about everything.
But seriously, just do the fix thing and you'll be on 3g, good [temporarily] enough. Its not like 4g costs more than 3g, so without a price difference there's no way to get a credit to your account. If this lasts for a long time then maybe Verizon should do something, lets just hope they fix it soon.

I'm not saying one camp is right or wrong more than the other. But I am saying that I bought the Thunderbolt to replace my original Droid for one major reason: 4G LTE.
For the past 3 weeks that I've owned my 'Bolt, 4G LTE connections have been spotty and very inconsistent. I assumed the reasoning was any of the following:
1. Custom ROMs I've installed.
2. Custom radio I installed.
3. Custom kernels I installed.
At no point did I think it was because of Verizon's 4G LTE not fully "being there".
Now that we are experiencing nationwide 4G LTE outage, this paints a starkly different picture for me than what I had previously thought.
What I think is a fair resolution is for folks to be able to return their Thunderbolts and have their new-every-two reset (if they used it to purchase a Thunderbolt) if they live in an area where 4G LTE coverage was listed.
Whether this outage is a short-term issue or part of a series of long-term growing pains/headaches, I think folks who bought this phone for the 4G should either get 4G or have the opportunity to return the phone. That's fair in my opinion.
M.

I have a slightly used Droid x I will gladly exchange for your TB.

im blown away by how many people think its unreasonable to expect verizon to provide that service that we all pay for. i guess we should all just bend over and take it like all of the PSN/PS3 customers, huh?

This thread is a joke.
If you are posting on this board, then i'm fairly confident that you don't deserve a credit because:
- You most likely temporarily turned on 3G (EVDO) data and are getting just about the same speeds as before
- You probably had your LTE radio switched off
- According to Verizon's policy, messing with these radios, flashing roms, etc... voids your warranty... and i'm sure they don't like giving credits for that.
In all honesty I can feel for the guy/gal who is stuck on 1X right now, while trying to tether so they can download their work mail.... they are the ones who deserve an explanation... and maybe a very small compensation. (what, $5?)

PSN has been out for more than a week. You can't access ANYTHING with their network.
4G LTE has been down for less than 24 hrs. You can still make phones calls and access data, although slowly.
Big difference.
I just think it's silly that people are crying to Verizon when it's been less than 24 hrs. Give them some time to fix it for Christ's sake.

Ok, I'll bite. We pay ~$1/day for data service. So if we simplify and say that for one day things didn't work, then we should get a $1 credit. But data is not completely out. Only 4g data. Since you're not completely out of service, you're not entitled to the entire $1. We could argue all day about how much 4g data service is worth but in reality we can't complain. Data is still $30/month just like it was and still is for 3g customers. Now what exactly do you want a credit for again? Is it really worth it for you to waste an hour or so of your time to get < $1 credited to your account? VZW doesn't have a habit of long outages or treating customers badly so why does everyone want to jump on their back about an outage like this?

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.
Im not happy about this, if it is or going to happen but even if we root the device, carriers don't have to allow it on their service. After all we did modify the device and thats all they need to use agaianst us...
Yes and since when can they see what we are doing and what else could they find out using that aoftware
oh noes...my porn watching days are coming to an end....
Regarding Tmo, yes they allow tethering for free, but throttle you after 5gb. So I'm not going to jump over there. I don't think rooting should be prevented, but it is understandable that vzw would want to stop unpaid tethering. Unlike Tmo they do charge extra for that.

Honestly, I think they should just make hotspot free after they start tiered plans. They'll get a their money either way.
But this move is something I can totally understand. Do I like it, no. It's a real shame how closed Android is becoming. I never thought we would get to this point, but this time next year, Android might not be open as we'd like it.
Only hope of keeping Android Android is the Nexus line. Hopefully Google starts to bring it to all carriers in a yearly fashion.

So I guess the question is, since the thunderbolt was htc most locked down phone to date, is if any of this root identifying software is located deep inside its code? I'm coming from sprint and the epic 4G and there was code hidden in there called carrier IQ that pretty much logged everything you did on the phone, your calls trxt, usage, whatever. Sounds alarming that it had that ability but what was weird is that even though it was running and functional the actual logging was turned off. I, and a lot of other people, wondered why this would be in a phone and after reading this im thinking sprint made samsung put it in there. So now I'm curious about what verizon asked htc to hide in the thunderbolt?

2 things. Verizon can see on there computer what software your on. So that right there will immediately through up a red flag. Another thing I'm kinda leaning toward Verizon on this one. For example when 4G hits my area. Verizon customers will increase. Doing so if my neighbor is tethering off his phone constantly then he's taking up all the bandwidth and my quality of service will depreciate. Now if he was capped and paying for tethering he would use it more conservative. I believe this is what Verizon is getting at. It's not about control , its about quality of network service for others.
There's probably no way to sue them bastards... It's their network and this is just a cap in data usage (like they haven't done that already.)
Verizon has been evil since the very beginning. All they wanted was our money, and probably our soul.

These threats are insignificant. Blocking users from rooting their phone would be a loss for all, as it is one of the major reasons for buying Android. If they did so to stop users from tethering, then we'll be seeing a spike in T-Mobile customers as they allow you to tether at your leisure for no additional cost. Being on an open source operating system, it would be illegal for them to tell you how you can use your technology and what modifications you're allowed to make to it.
I'll stay rooted and I will continue to tether via USB and rack up my apparently corporate-rattling 1GB of stolen bandwidth to demo THEIR products. Interesting concept.

Nothing in Apache or GPLv2 prevents them from telling you how you can use your technology, or prevents them from locking down the device.

Hey lets pretend the article is 100% accurate which because P3Droid wrote it I would say has some possibility of being the case, as of this point verizon is not doing anything besides tracking. And no one knows when and if they will do anything else. Theirs a whole lot of what they can do, but besides having a legal and finance department, they also have a marketing department which wont let them unleash a PR nightmare. Taking 1/10 (which is what I believe the current agreed upon number of root users, i may be wrong with this figure) of your smartphone users and either canceling their contracts or killing service on their devices with threat of an ETF would probably amount to over 1 million users with root access being effected. It just wont happen that way, its not logical for them to do it, because with that many users effected it would be all over TV and such.
The only hope that you could sue them would be if they hit you with a ETF, which they probably wouldn't. Most likely their looking for people sharing wifi on their devices with 3rd party apps just like AT&T did and will tack on the mifi hotspot cost to your bill if you continue to do do, and say if you don't like it break your own contract.
If they were to all out attack everyone with root access I would really be shocked, specifically because they would have to most likely cancel everyone contract with no ETF and then users would just flock to sprint. Who regardless of what this article says probably wont follow suit, at least for a few years because of their market share and the Tmobile & at&t merger.
Again the end of this is just my two cents but the beginning is true VZ isnt doing anything besides information gathering at this point.

LOOK HERE! How to get AT&T to bring back $30 data.

Hey guys! Just got off the phone with an AT&T rep, tried to talk him into getting me unlimited data for $30 per month. Obviously that didn't work so well, but he did share some valuable info with me...
Every time someone calls and asks for it, they file a report and send it make to the main department. The keep each report, and he says they've been getting so many recently, they're considering bringing back the plan for those who have called in and asked for it sometime in the next few months.
I don't really know how it will work, but here's your time to call!
Can someone else ask AT&T if these reports actually exist so I know this thread isn't pointless?
Just dial up an ATT rep and ask for unlimited data. They'll most likely say no, but they will also most likely file that report that one guy mentioned.
ok thank.........
In other news, the temperature of earths core has dropped buy over nine thousand degrees.
-sent via 1.21 giggawatts of android.
When I spoke to a CSR manager he didn't say anything about reports but he did confirm that they've been getting bombarded with irate customers who want the unlimited data plan back. His outlook on it was that AT&T was forever changing their plans to meet customers needs and that it was very likely that an unlimited plan would become available in the near future.
BUT and this is a big BUT .... He insinuated that it would come at a heftier price tag. So maybe instead of $30, we might be looking at a $50 all you can eat smorgasbord of data.

Verizon is getting rid of unlimited data too...
Sounds like something I would say to a customer who had spent the last 30 minutes bombarding me with impossible requests.
Just wanted to confirm that I also got 'grandfathered' into an unlimited data plan at $30/month, though it took almost 3 weeks in 'management review' to get there. The problem for me is that I wanted the MEdia Net plan back, and I'm half tempted to tell them to stick their new phone and go back to using my HD2.
Here's why.
In all the years I've been with AT&T (four or more have been out of contract), I've never gone over 200MB a month, and I don't think I've ever gone over 30 text/mms messages a month. Never. Ever. Not when using my Kaiser, and not when using my HD2 both of which were bought privately from Ebay, and not as an upgrade. If anything, I've paid for MEdia net for many months when I didn't use data or messaging at all.
So, for me, a 2G data plan with 200 messages at $20/month would be fine for my needs, and still not hurt AT&T, since I'm not a data hog.
Anyway, just sayin'. YMMV.
Lol I doubt they will bring it back. It had more to do with them having network capacity issues than anything else.
Besides if they actually do keep that info then they will probably corolate the info with the average usage of the people making complaints and if those people are considered high use then it is unlikely their voices will be heard.
Besides I think they where even looking at getting in trouble for the network overload. Doubt they will go back.

Just canceled verizon service over this phone!

After having so so many issues with this phone and issues with my previous OG Droid i came to my wits end and dropped my service today after verizon refused to give me anything other than a Revolution or thunderbolt as a replacement!
Loving my Charge on Humble 4.22 with unlimited data. It can only get better when I move into Humble 5.0 or other EP4P ROM.
I really can't complain about this phone, although I'm sure I couldn't hang with stock.
Are you getting other service? In general, Verizon's network is superior. I'm sure that varies with location though.
i have my charge on humble and all i have to say is WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

I was running a custom rom also but the constant lack of data is unacceptable! i have tried EVERY rom, modem and combination out there! after having 8 of the other droids, and 3 of these i was told that i could swap to ANY other phone i wanted so i researched it and chose the bionic because it has higher ratings the rep then told me no not that phone anything but that, so i said ok let me do some research and i did and decided to go to the iPhone for the reason of apple has better support! and the rep said oh, sorry not that either.... ok so if i can have ANY phone what can i actually have? he replied thunderbolt or revolution... UH.... NO... So o can canceled my service and will sacrifice the poorer networks....
I kinda feel stuck as well. But I don't want to cancel my service.

The only issue you mention is "constant lack of data", which would seem to have nothing at all to do with the phone and a lot to do with the network. A Bionic doesn't have magic cell tower creation sauce in it. Neither does an iPh*ne. You say you've been through 11 phones over this, proving the phones aren't related, and proving that VZW has bent over backwards to please a whiney idiot. They've lost a pretty penny giving you phone after phone for something that has NOTHING to do with the hardware, because they actually care about whiners (most of us don't). Good luck finding another company that dedicated to keeping you around while they lose money on you.
If you KNOW of a better carrier in your area, from you know actually talking to real friends on other carriers in your area (if you haven't WAAHed them all away), then just switch to them. No need to post a gee tell me I'm right and a great martyr to strangers all over the world on a forum. Just switch.
Maybe you wanted to be Thomas Paine and start a revolution with all of us. Umm... too bad. Many of us get great service. Sorry yours sucks, but no need to post anywhere but a site dedicated to your local geographic area. Otherwise the info is pretty worthless to most of us.
Finally, THANK YOU, for finally leaving VZW. Your antics have contributed to driving up their overall costs (passed on to all of us eventually).
I dont see how you can complain when you were running custom roms.
Did you ever give the Charge a chance at a complete stock setup?

So ill go over to att where i expect things not to work!
Humble 5.0 has made this phone good and I agree with others dont leave big red when you have unlimited. Tons of new devices to come.

Really not a good time to bail ... the latest EP4 leak is a big step up in modem performance (almost never drop data anymore -- If I do, it's for maybe 10 seconds).
EP4 will (supposedly) be released within the next few weeks OTA.
Plus this improved modem performance lets me use 2X Battery (similar to Juice Defender) to turn off data while the phone is not in use, yet turn it on every xx minutes to check email, etc.... resulting in a big battery savings. I could never do this with the previous leaks or when the phone was stock -- it would take FOREVER to pick up data each time I turned the screen on.

We are past Tuesday WTF? I'd call back and demand satisfaction!
Now it the wrong time to switch carriers. Unless you go to Sprint. Verizon's Unlimited Data on 4G @12mbs(av.) is something I would have tried to stay and deal with.
I understand your fustration. All I want is a phone that works and does what was promised. I tether and still have probs when playing Xbox live, or downloading torrents. Speedtest gets me 12mbs, but still have problems then it locks or freezes. So I know what you mean. I've tried ALL ROMS. I'm on Humble 5.0 right now, and I love it.
But all you need to do is restart, or turn off then on mobile data, and it works. It'll work for awhile. But there are still those problems that happen. Despite all that...I still Love Verizon. I've had no probs with cust serv or phone coverage. To me, the problem is bad, but not enough to make me EVER leave Verizon.
Luckily I won this phone and still have my new every two discount. So I will sell this phone for 200 and end up paying 50 for Galaxy Nexus. I hope that the problems with tethering and data freezing don't exist with the GN.
I've had them all. Treo on ATT, Samsung Flip Phone on Sprint then flashed to Cricket, G1 on T-Mobile, then Droid Eris and Charge on Verizon. VERIZON IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST!...Luckily I got unlimited data before it was gone. If you had that and let it go...I'm sorry, but I think you will look back and realize you mad a big mistake.

Sprint is having their own data problems right now. You guys are complaining about dropping data until you reboot. How about not having any data at all regardless of how many times you reboot. That's how bad Sprint is in some areas right now (northwest Indiana). If I try to go to the market sometimes the phone will sit there for literally five minutes and still won't connect. I get data time-outs and the spinning circle multiple times a day. Which is why I went back to Verizon on my hands & knees hoping their network has improved in the past couple of years.
Big red came through. They have very nice CS (well 95% nice) LOL. I got the Bionic just in time to sell it after I use my upgrade to get the nexus!!!! (The Bionic is a very good phone BTW) Verizon service hands down beats the rest. When it comes to the big red, you get what you pay for. That's the truth.

[Q] Will this phone will not run 4G on SimpleMobile?

Does anyone here knows exactly if there is some sort of limitation that would prevent this phone from getting 4G speeds on mysimplemobile.com (T-Mobile MVNO)?
I have been able to get 4G speeds on their network for almost 2 months, and then it switched to 3G speeds (~240kbps for downloads). I asked the tech support wtf is happening, and the guy came up with some bull###t explanation, why my phone cannot possibly run 4G. I do not have a feeling he knows what he's talking about because when I kept asking him what standard must the phone support for 4G speeds, he kept saying "it must run 4G on 1700 band". After I kept pressuring him, he said "HSDPA+ 1700".
He also mentioned that people are getting 4G speeds on their network with iPhones from AT&T, until the "system recognizes" and then they somehow down to EDGE. It makes no sense to me whatsoever, how could a phone that doesn't support frequency on which network is running could run 4G at all, like, EVER.
Does anybody here know about the intricacies of the 4G networking to tell:
* if Samsung Galaxy S 4G does indeed support 4G on whatever belongs to mysimplemobile?
* is there even such thing as HSDPA+ 1700MHz, and does SGS4G support this?
* is it possible that a phone legitimately runs at 4G speeds for months, and then out of sudden stops doing it without any foul play from operator?
* is it possible that the phone runs 4G on a network that does not even support their band (like this iPhone thing)
Here's a quote from the tech support email:
Thank you for your interest Simple Mobile. We are responding to your
recent inquiry.
We were able to speak with you on October 28, 2012 (9:25 PM EST) at
*********. You were informed that the reason that your data speed
runs only with 3G is because your phone is not a supported handset for
4G speeds.
We understand that you were able to use the 4G speed these past few
months. You were informed that this case is similar with our iPhone
users. During activation, the network does not know the phone model the
SIM card is inserted into. The network sends data throughput through
multiple frequencies in order to determine the frequency the handset is
running into. Once the network realizes that the handset does not work
with 1700 MHz bands, it sends the appropriate data speed which is 2G.

Does that explanation make sense?
Your phone wouldn't just stop getting 4g it would have never got it in the first place. If the phone supports what band the company uses for 4g then you get 4g if it does not the you will not.
The guy is an idiot about the iphone thing. It would be like setting your walky-talky to channel 5 and trying to talk to someone on channel 3. The bands either match or they don't.

I will wait a couple days for the next billing cycle, and if this theory is right, I will see 4G speeds back again. If I do, those SimpleMobile folks are sneaky a**holes. Not only they lie about their plan being "unlimited", they also have technical support lie about the phone/network capabilities in a manner that assumes their customers are dumb. This is wrong on so many levels....
Put this code in your dialpad *#2263#
Then you can browse and select the bands your phone supports

Simple mobile throttles you before you hit the 2gig mark. Yeap. It blows. It will reset on billing cycle. Text info to 848484 to see your usage and reset date.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming this for me.
How do they get away with it? They advertise unlimited everything, and then throttle? And not only throttle, but disable data completely after 3GB or 2.5GB, according to this: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1773841-How-Much-Data-on-the-50-Plan
How come nobody sued their ass for doing it, isn't such blatant false advertisement a ground for class action?

Throttle slows down but if you can still download, you are still unlimited, so they are not in breach and are still offering you unlimited.
Also read things like Section 25-2, and others http://www.mysimplemobile.com/Simple-Mobile-Terms-Conditions.aspx it's clearly there, so you agreed to that, so there is nothing you can do. You can't tether, you can't P2P, you can surf webpages basically or you might get throttled.
When I first got suspended, the telephone rep I got to speak to, told me that Pandora was a breach of contract even. Maybe next month, instead of dropping the prices, they will up the data. Wishful thinking, but, doubtful.

It is outrageous... I wrote a blog post why nobody should sign up with them. Please share around. Hopefully, at least a couple of poor souls would avoid this mess. http://blog.galets.net/2012/11/why-you-should-stay-away-from.html

They just sent me a warning, "your data service at risk of being suspended due to violation of TOC, blablabla. call 1-800-xxxxxxx".
So, I called 1-800 number. Nobody there to talk to me, but the voice annotation says, like getochkn says, "if you're here, we've warned you, you agreed to our toc, we can disconnect you anytime we'd like, if you don't like that - f### off"
This made me quite confused, because I only used like 340Mb of "unlimited" data plan. Last month, when I used 2.5Gb, they didn't mind.
So I called tech support, trying to get an idea, what is it exactly that they don't want me to do. The guy started telling me all sorts of bologne, like we don't allow tethering, do you tether? I said "no". He said "do you have facebook?". I said "yes, what does it have to do with anything?". "WHEN YOU LEAVE FACEBOOK RUNNING, IT USES A LOT OF DATA, THIS IS WHY YOU GOT WARNING".
I said "I have facebook, but not on the phone. It seems to me that you are guessing. Can you look at my account, and tell me what exactly caused warning, so that I don't do it in future?" He said "it is because last month you used very little data, but this month you are using A LOT"
At this time I started suspecting that the dumbass not only does not know what he is talking about, but just makes up stuff as he goes. So I said, "you got access to my account, how much data does it show I used?".
he couldn't answer.
this was so eye opening... They are hiring monkeys for their tech support, and they are SO STUPID, THEY ARE NOT EVEN GIVEN ACCESS TO ACCOUNTS!!! So they make up stuff, as they go. I don't even know why would anybody call
This entire thread is just disgraceful in terms of the tech support. He lets techs straight up lie to you. I'd ask for a higher up and complain.

Interesting that you mentioned it. When I realized that the tech guy lies straight in my face, I asked him to talk to supervisor. He put me on hold for a few minutes, then picked up the phone back (himself), said that supervisor is crazy busy this time, and cannot talk, but THE WARNING ACTUALLY WENT BY MISTAKE, and he apologizes, there is no warning on my account, poof - gone.
I am pretty certain that he never actually could tell, if there is a warning to begin with
I'm wondering if I call them with a made up number, if they will pretend that the account actually exist, or they actually will be able to figure THAT.

switching to VZW.. questions

I'm thinking about switching to VZW for ST but my husband is kinda iffy about the bills. We both own ST S3 and love them. But data speeds are really slow.
My questions are.. I have been told that VZW has the same data speeds as ST. Anyone know if this is true?
We now pay about $100 bucks a month unlimited calls and text. Unlimited data UP TO 2.5 than your speeds are slowed "throttled".
I'm I silly to think I could get the same package or close to what ST offers through VZW? I'm looking at 2 phones.

Stay away from Verizon! Not only does their customer service suck but they spy on every customer and know of everything that is on your phone!

I think your statement is a little unfounded. Let's just say if I did the stuff I do on 4g on comcast without vpn comcast would be sending me emails to stop. Verizon has never done that. Verizon could potentially spy on you but they don't at least not to the extent of comcast. Another thing to note is if you put files on your phone via USB Verizon doesn't have a way to see them. Don't get me wrong I am no fan of Verizon but Verizon is by no means big brother. Customer service isn't great I'll give you that but they sure do make up for that in coverage and reliability. Other than the differences in price, coverage, and customer service the big four are all the same so if you think Verizon spy's on you they all do.
It's not unfounded. My GS3 on contract with them is having problems. Technical support knew every app, every setting and proceeded to ask about what certain files were that are on my memory card! I'm not into conspiracy theories, but they knew everything about my phone.

Do you use Verizon backup utility?

Verizon kinda does "spy" on your phone. Although, it's not unannounced. Verizon added "Remote diagnostic utility" in an update waaaay back in the day. I think this was our VRALG7 or VRALG1 ICS update. You can read about it on AC.
Yes, I do remember this receiving publicity in 2012. They (Verizon) are supposed to ask you before activating it of course.

I guess this is just another reason to go aosp. Pretty messed up if you ask me. They should of made us put in a secret pin to tell the techs in order to use that function.

I hear you on that, although I've been on that AOSP train for quite some time. Idk if I recall the exact name of the diagnostic tool in the rom itself though. Part of me feels like it is removed from the base roms but idk if I'm mistaken.
Sadly Verizon is the only option in my area. I'd to do a rom and get off touchwiz but when I got my phone it already had the 4.3 update on it so it's locked down now.

Due to the Verizon Remote Diagnostic utility, Verizon only has direct access to your phone when you call NOT whenever they feel like. If you can prove otherwise, you might have a claim for invasion of privacy.
