Hello everyone! This is a question about GPS on the device, however I didn't see too many comparisons from previous Inspire 4G owners which is what I'm mostly interested in. However I invite anyone to join in this topic.
I currently have an Inspire 4G running CM 7.1 and have been debating on getting the Skyrocket.
Last week I went to Wal-Mart and upgraded to the OGSGSII, but took it back because the GPS wasn't working as well as my Inspire was. I had the Captivate before the Inspire and as most of you know the GPS was terrible and I didn't want to go back to that. I rely on GPS too much since I travel for work. Not to mention my new work phone is a OGSGSII that I just got yesterday and I didn't want to have two of the same device. The GPS on my work OGSGSII is functioning about the same as the one I took back from Wal-Mart.
So for those of you that have the Skyrocket, did any of you come from the Inspire? How's the GPS functionality on the Skyrocket compared to Inspire? For those of you not coming from the Inspire, please tell me your opinions too.
Thanks!!
Our inspire had horrible GPS
As a matter of fact we just returned from a 3 week road trip where we compared the 2 and we were soooo glad I had the skyrocket.
GPS can be hit or miss on Samsung devices but when it is a miss it is easy to fix

I say ditch the inspire and come here. I had the inspire and the battery life is horrible compare to this one.

Oh and GPS is way better. I was inside with this picture.

What is your all's opinions on what people are saying about the screen? Some are saying they see lines?

I had the HD2 and the Inspire. The Skyrocket has a better GPS than both. Hardware wise, my Skyrocket is better than my Garmin 3790! Now, if we could only get Garmin software on Android.
I'm not real happy with any of the GPS apps for Android.
Google maps is OK if you already know where you're going. It misses by a couple of blocks sometimes. The maps are accurate, the addresses for POIs are not. Also, Google Maps is not reliable at choosing the best, or even a reasonable route. No real POI import. Only useful with a data source. Caching works OK, NOT. Excellent worldwide map availibility, IF you have a data connection.
Co-Pilot's maps are only OK at Best. The text to voice sometimes says turn left when it really means right. POI import is a struggle at best. Limited worldwide map availibility.
Sygic is not too bad. POIs must use the same database as Google, because when it's wrong in Google, it's wrong in Sygic. The Vehicle Icon is WAY too big; Sygic says that will be fixed soon. POI import from Mapsource is doable. Good worldwide map availability.
Overall: 1 to 10
Garmin 3790
. Software: 9
. Hardware: 8
Skyrocket GPS hardware: 9
. Google Maps Software: 6.5
. Co Pilot Software: 6
. Sygic Software: 7.5
Using an inspire right now but my SR will be here Tuesday, cant wait!

They exist..myself and others have posted pics. If you are not a picky person you might never notice in some cases. On one SR i had it was insanely noticeable

I came from the Inspire. I am very impressed with the functionality of the GPS on this device. You shouldn't have an issue at all.
HTC = Hate The Consumer
I get great gps compared to my inspire. I cabn get 10 or 15 satellite's while sitting inside, never could do that with inspire. Also the wifi is pretty good and connects to my wifi at home almost instantly while my inspire didnt. I do however still love my inspire, it was a great first android device for me. She will never be forgotte

Glad to hear good experiences. Think I might go get one while the Inspires are still going for a good price on eBay.

Giving this a bump to see if anyone else would like to participate in this topic before I go upgrade to the Skyrocket.
Thanks again!
The GPS is phenomenal, I get 4 meter accuracy while indoors.

I agree with what others here are saying, the GPS is outstanding. Of course, I came from a Captivate so navigating by star chart would be better than that thing. I do not have the screen issues that other post about, but i have seen the pictures and it appears some phones do have serious screen issues. I am still amazed at the LTE speeds, cant go back to HSPA+ ... Good luck.
I get faster gps lock inside my house with my skyrocket than i did outside with my inspire. Everything on the skyrocket is smoother and faster than the inspire
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium
I can vouch for the GPS too. I came from the Captivate (had to get a bluetooth GPS receiver dongle for that POS because I travel on business frequently to cities I've not been to before).
Skyrocket got it right. Locks in seconds and tracks spot on. I haven't been to an urban area like NYC or San Francisco yet so no idea how well it works in those canyons.
^^^+1...came from Captivate, I use the GPS on my Skyrocket daily and am constantly in awe of how spot on it is.

Came from captivate and inspire. Skyrockets GPS has served me quite well. Love the reliability.

just bought my 1st webos device.webOS has been around for like 3 years already! how come devs have not come up wid a decent solution for VIRTUAL KEYBOARD!!?? its really awkward to slide out d physicalKB even to type a url in web browser! :-( is there any way to get a vkb on pre 3 just like the one in webOS 3.0???
Hi,
Are you in India or the US ? If in India, where did buy you the Pre 3 ? How is it faring ? How much ?

Ok. I'm very much aware of ebay but I was under the thought you bought it locally in India. I'm seriously planning to get a WebOS device, either the Pre 3 or the Touchpad. I'll get it from Ebay US since the prices are cheaper than Ebay India.
I'm just curious, how good is WebOS ? I mean the battery life, apps availability, bluetooth connectivity, etc.
I'll proly get a new one with warranty. Any chances that HP will honor international warranty should you run into any problems with the devices ?
There is a way to enable the virtual keyboard,it envolves enabling "Dev Mode" and downloading some "HomeBrew" Apps.I'm actually running WebOS 2.2.4 right now on my Pre Plus. Works pretty good, its unstable at times, but the more iuse it,the more it seems to "burn" in and become more stable.
There is a patch for it..go to webosnation.com
Unfortunately, it only enable the virtual keyboard on portrait mode..not the landscape mode..
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium
But in Preware, there a virtual keyboard that can be installed and if I remember , it can go landscape.

Are you being serious? Did you even try to do what the OP told you? If that doesn't work try holding the power and volume down buttons. And no there is no such thing as a jailbreak for android devices.

I was equally inmpressed when I ran one of my GPS programs. My last phone HTC Inspire 4G struggled to get 6 satellites and I was locking on 11 of 17 satellites on my HOX. Love it!
Been playing with GPS recently just to practice for an upcoming trip to the US mainland. Boy does routing suck in Honolulu, Hawaii. It's almost as if Google's navigation and Navigon have no clue that we have highways here.
GPS reception has been great though, locking in quickly and reliably.
thnx for the help guys...but lets get back on topic..the gps lock on this thing is unreal! im very impressed with its performance.
anyone else with great gps performance where others have failed?

The GPS is great on this phone! The GPS works ten thousand times better than my captivate. I'm going to try the GPS on my fight to K.C. Also thanks on the screenshot thing! It took me a few times to figure it out.

GPS is almost useless on mine. It looks up fast enough, outdoors...but its ability to hold an accurate location or track is almost non-existent.
Sitting putrefy still, phone on a flat unmoving surface, taking applications like My Tracks, Endomondo, etc., report me moving at speeds up to 8mph and the position indicator just meanders all over the map, sometimes jumping two or three city blocks.
Guessing I have defective hardware since none of the gps fixes housing around have helped.

I was telling someone else about this about a week ago. I was comparing the GPS to my Galaxy Nexus. The GN had about 9-12 satellites in line of sight. Connected to about 8-9. The LTE One X had at the same spot 20-23 in line of sight. Connected to about 9-12. Accuracy was 12 feet with my GN and 9 feet with my LTE One X. The GN works great in the navigation part but what stood out was the amount of satellites the One X was able to see. It was almost 2X's the amount of my GN.

Assuming that you have made sure the satellite gps is turned on that definitely sounds like a defective phone. I hope you can get a replacement with the hold on the phones in customs.
Mine works phenomenally well. Used it to calibrate the speedometer on the boat last weekend. Very fast connection, strong and accurate.

I also noticed how well and accurate GPS works on this phone. It locks very fast on cold start and so far it locked for me inside buildings as well.
But unfortunately there is a down side - it kills battery.
I was also able to get a solid lock from 35,000 feet inside of a plane heading from Vegas to Kansas City. Pretty cool watching that little arrow cruise across the country
One of the first features I checked after upgrading from my captivate. Giddy
3-4m lock in 2 seconds outdoors. 5-7m lock in 2 seconds inside moving car with accurate nav!
GPS is very useable asset now!

How do you put screen shots on the internet? Do I need a scanner?

Ok then lets see a ss of your settings so i can try them on my cappy or at least compare them.

I'm not understanding why high end GPS that doesn't cost a fortune is so hard to find. Navigon is 50 bucks. Ugh. Am I missing?
I've used copilot for a couple years with no problems. It's a cheaper alternative for offline nav.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Im just using google navigation modded for worldwide navigation.
So far it works with minimal data usage for navigation.
Copilot works great too but i rarely get updates from it for my country.

bad choice. the phone is rly cool in every way EXCEPT on the lag. if you instal more than 20 apps the phone will lag ( this includes the avast app that i dont know if it makes the lag on my phone). this happens when the phone memory reaches less then 450 mb free of 1 gb, which is alot free so i dont understand. i guess its because p920 only has 556 mb ram instead of 1gb

3D Camera works great, especially if you're outdoor, in a picnic the effect is beautiful
Hardware is ok! except for the Ram space, I only have 150 free usually and when using wifi it drops to a range of 90 which is so close to crash, plus I don't think 512Mb of ram can load ICS so don't have your hopes up.
The phone isn't so popular either so there aren't enough custom roms out there, not as half as there are for the SII at least.
LG's stock UI is simple clean and with very useful widgets, but nothing to say wow about, its a little bulky/laggy (a bad finishing touch) so I use ThiazO3D custom rom and the problem is solved
The screen is quite bright and very good for games, but frankly who still uses LCD for their phones? Battery drop is manageable (I play 3D games outdoors for about 30-40min and carry on my day)
I don't recommend it if you're not a fan of 3D, but I like mine
you shouldve bought the optimus 3d max

I don't agree that 512MB RAM is too little for ICS. There are plenty of phones with 512MB RAM that run ICS fine...
