[Q] On Rooting.. - General Questions and Answers

Im a complete noob Here..
Just bought my LG P500 android phone with 2.2.1 froyo stock..
I want to root my phone as a start to Open VPN
I've done my research and ended with gingerbreak...
Im on Chainfires thread and It says "format the SD card"

[Q] about installing 3.1 on wifi xoom

i have an unmodified wifi only xoom (us) im a little confused about getting the update to work, im a noob but do have success with other devices like rooting and installing cm7 on an evo and others, but im either missing something or just not getting it. if im stock can i just install clockwork through rommanager and put the update.zip on an sd card and update through that, i thought the xoom needed to be modified to use an sd card( until an update anyway) and i understand and have installed fastboot and any and all drivers. i cant post in the dev so i thought id post here, any help at all is appreciated. thanks
I was a little confused about it too. It seems CWM will "see" your sdcard as /sdcard/ even if you dont have sd support. Once I booted up, /sdcard/ went back to what it was, and so did everything else, but I'm on 3.1 somehow.
I'm pretty sure you have to be rooted to flash in CWM though, am I wrong? At least anything dealing with /system/ . If you're totally stock, I'd just keep pushing for the OTA
is there any reason at all to update to 3.1, what are the benefits, I see all the hype but nobody is showing any benefit????

Couple questions about rooting infuse 4g

Alright i am almost ready to root my infuse 4g... i just wanna make im doing this right... I got this one that i think i should do(link is gonna be at the bottom) but i wanna know, how do i put a file on the internal sd card? Is that the folder that comes up when ever you use a file manager, without root access, on the phone?
And also how do i know that i have the drivers for my phone? Because kies is **** and it keeps failing or something...and last question, Someone please tell me the procedure if im wrong...
What i think is supposed to be done for rooting is you root, with something such as the one below in the link, and then do you have to install a different rom(i was thinking of infused 2.1.0) or do you have to just get a rom manager and do enable it or something like that?
Please someone answer these questions?
This is the link for the root i wanna do, as it is aimed at rogers infuse 4g, which of course is what i ahve

As long as Kies is successfully installed you should have the drivers. That's all I had to do. As for loading rom's, don't use rom manager. Flash it with CWM.

On the internal SD card, which CWM recognizes and can use just fine.

Please read the guides that are already posted in the DEV section. You don't need a SD card to root nor to run custom ROMs. It is advisable to get one though.

Thanks I should have searched first >.< Btw after I install some other firmware and root my phone, would I be able to update it via Kies ?
Thanks for the answer again
No buddy, once you root Kies will be useless. You may be able to find the most up-to-date rom and root it.
If you go for a custom rom usually developers update it to the latest firmware version.
Just be careful on what your doing to your phone. Read the tutorial 3-4 times before starting the process and make sure you have everything.
Also.. make sure you check task manager and end task all KIES apps. (KiesAgentTray KiesPLR etc)

I have Android LG P506 (help)

Hey guys, I'm finally fed up with my lg p506 thrive:
I am running the Android 2.2.2 system. My kernal version is 2.6.32.9
Is it possible to so called 'root' this phone in order to make it perform faster. I am always getting the low space warnings and barely have any apps on it. I know this isn't the most state of the art phone at all, but if their's anything you guys could recommend besides moving apps to my SD card I would really appreciate it!
I'm a newbie at any sort of rooting so if you guys could assist me it'd be great. From my research here, people say to install Gingerbreak 1.2 APK. My main question being, where do I "install' this file when I have my phone connected via USB?
Thanks,
Megafast13
