[Q] Rooting & rom noob - help needed - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I have few question and dunno where to start. First, I downloaded some custom ROM and I want to install it, is installing new ROM same as rooting ? If not, how to install that ROM which I have already downloaded and ROOT my Galaxy Ace ?
P.S. I'm kinda afraid of rooting I get it as some sort of scary **** to do :S But since I can't update to 2.3.6 since this stupid Polish firmware doesn't let me to do it, I want to change to another one. And I want to ROOT it so I can move some apps to memory card so I get more RAM
I would really appriciate some useful advices

This thread by hubix should explain it all

Thanks I should have searched first >.< Btw after I install some other firmware and root my phone, would I be able to update it via Kies ?
Thanks for the answer again

No buddy, once you root Kies will be useless. You may be able to find the most up-to-date rom and root it.
If you go for a custom rom usually developers update it to the latest firmware version.
Just be careful on what your doing to your phone. Read the tutorial 3-4 times before starting the process and make sure you have everything.
Also.. make sure you check task manager and end task all KIES apps. (KiesAgentTray KiesPLR etc)

I know that rooting gives a super user privilege to android owners, but i have to know that is that compulsory to install any custom rom after rooting my device.am now satisfied with my stock rom (not afraid of losing my phone ) but i have to stop unwanted running programmes from my phone.I am not rooted yet, ready to root any time. What i have to do to root my phone (safest and simplest way) and to stop unwanted running programmes.
Hope a sudden Reply.

No need to PM any DEv, I guess they are too busy on the development.
You can write any question here and many experience user can answer your inquiry.
You can root your device and stick to stock ROM and remove any programs that you didn't want to use.
Use Titanium back-up from the market to erase them.

1- you should port other phone's rom to your phone and then flash it.. only then will you be able to use that rom on your phone..
2- Google stock rom/original firmware <your phone 'name> .. if its available on the internet then you will find one.. or else you will need to do a nandroid backup or extract it..
3- there is no general rom which works on all phones rightaway.. there is cyanogenmod which is by far available for all phones (don't know about Chinese phones) .. but you will have to do some tweaks or modification to work on a specific phone because different phones have different hardwares..
4-4.1.2 is jb and not ics.. you will have to put cm10 or probably delete the bloatware installed by your supplier..
5- as i said before you need to port cm9 for your phone.. there are many noob friendly guides on xda to help porting roms.. check out

Google srsroot, download it from their official website and try..

does your phone has locked bootloader or UNlocked one?
I have a same problem...any ideas?
How good are these phones?
very good phones
A suggestion...
I'm not 100 % you can do it but there is a slight chance you can root your phone through fastboot ! Maybe pushing the su binary and apk through adb and giving permissions or maybe flasing a custom CWM Rrecovery through fastboot and flashing an SU flashable zip through that recovery !
BUT be awere BOTH of these methods are BIG MAYBE ! I can not test and I can not ensure you any of these will work !
You can get a flashable SU package here :
1) Superuser : http://androidsu.com/superuser/
2) Super SU : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
you can
yes you can
i know page on Facebook that support me to root my device and install cmw
Chinese smart phone support
I used this to root my i9400, hope it helps!

Thanks for your replies I really appreciate it. I am sorry its in the wrong place, I did look, but I couldnt find it.
@AXD96....if i use that, are there updates for it, and also if I need to unroot it is it possible. Its still under guarantee.
Thanks again.
Can I ask, if somebody could explain, whats the difference between flashing and rooting, having the phone locked or unlocked and how that affects both, being able to use kies, how does that work, if its been rooted.

yes the update yes but you must use cydia 1 time after you will get root access you must install superuser or supersu from playstore and you should do these updates from play store
if you are thinking about firmware update the answer is always yes! )
you cant do updates if you change bootloader,if you want to change rom you MUST change bootloader

android is based off linux. and pretty much has everything a linux computer has except Super user/admin like we have on windows. pretty much rooting is running a exploit to get Super user so we can run applications/ flash OS and other goodies. locked and unlocked have to do with the bootloader. im not the best guy with knowing what a boot loader is but pretty much it boots your OS. if its locked you are unable to flash unsigned Roms so no custom roms pretty much. im not sure why Samsung cant update their phones ota sometimes so they use kies. maybe the file is big enough that it cant be carried ota.

flashing=install some software (brutal force Haha) with flashing you install(copy)data on your phone maybe a firmware,
flashing is used with pc while you flash a firmware or the clockworkmod...
flashing is also used while we speaking about recovery when you install a zip...
routing is the procedure to add superuser function to your android
you can get root flashing a firmware that has included the root
or get it using some exploit
exploit=android bug
there are a lot of bug in android versionS
for example today there arent exploit avariable on android 4.4 and 4.3 but there are 1 or more in android 4.2 4.1
and there are a lot of bug in android 2.3 this os the same of iOS on iPhone, in apple world we talk about JAILBREACK...
if you would like to try to root using exploit you can try FRAMAROOT an app or CYDIAIMPACTOR a software on pc
if you would like to flash a firmware with root you should use ODIN

hit a problem, I downloaded Cydia to my macbook pro, installed it, selected debugging mode and accept downloads from unknown sources, opened Cydia and the drop down option has 'drop SuperSU su to /system/xbin/su' clicked on start and immediately kies wants to open, and then Cydia says 'Error signature bugs unavailable'. What does that mean and why has it happened.
Thank you
Did I mention that it is running 4.1.2.....does this need 4.3?

I dont see anywhere that the Galaxy s3 mini cant be rooted, and I see others using 4.1.2 being rooted. So can somebody explain? And looking on the Impactor website it doesnt say anything about that either......

sorry i was a little late, i have never heard of that cydia app that guy was talking about and i looked it up and it has nothing to do with rooting.
so i looked it up like i promised and i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459910 should work on 4.1.2 the guy said its in Chinese and if you look down there's pictures to find your way through it. yeah once its rooted it should have superuser or SuperSU (same thing made by different people) if it is not on there you might have to download it from the playstore just look one of them up (chainfires SuperSU is recommended) and install it and get a root checker from the playstore as well. Update me if anything happens.

Hi all,
Can I replace the ROM of my phone to earlier versions?
The manufactures have done a mod of JB 4.2 to 4.4 KitKat but the ROM have a lot of bugs, sad , my question is, can I flash a 4.2.x stable ROM from for example a S4 clone ROM? Plus, my download mode is fake because everything is chinese.
And also, with the attachments and using CPU-Z.

Hi.
Unfortunately I was unable to find any support or info about your device on xda. If you have the stock firmware or a nandroid backup, you could restore the old ROM.
You can also try a factory reset and set up your phone again to see if that sorts things out.
Another possibility is to root your device, install Titanium Backup app and freeze/uninstall bloatware to reduce burden on phone resources. This might (or might not) reduce your lag. Please proceed with caution and only if you know what you're doing as injudicious use of this feature can cause system instability.
Short of that, I'm afraid your only option is to contact the manufacturer and request for a downgrade.

Ok, I recently installed SuperSU and my Titanium Backup is been granted, and now what will I do?

[Completed] [Q] Start to finish guide

Hi, my name is Anthony and I have a T-Mobile S5 running the latest version of android (I think it's 5.0.1 or 5.0). I'm kinda a newb with flashing and rooting. I had my phone rooted using towel root a while ago, but I lost that root in an update and it is no longer supportive of my phone.
I'm looking to install custom roms but before I do so, I would like to make a full backup of my current stock touch wiz so I can revert to it in case I don't like the new rom. I also would like to root my phone. Oh, and before anyone tells me that I need to install Odin, I have a Mac running Yosemite.... A lot of people have told me that I need to install clock work in order for this whole process to work.
Recap:
1. Make backup rom
2. Root phone
3. Teach me how to flash roms using a Mac.
4. Include any other important info and links for downloads.
I mainly want to install CM12, but I still want a backup rom to revert to later
Thanks, and please don't post any hate
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. Some pro tips, figure out how to use Odin. You'll need it eventually if you want to root and flash roms. Either in a Windows vm or heimdall. If something goes wrong you'll need to flash the stock firmware.
There's a whole forum for your device,http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5. And the best place to ask your specific question is here,http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/help
