[Q] Request - Mobile Hotspot application for Charge - Verizon Droid Charge

Unsure if this is possible - I've recently moved on to Gummy Charged (EP1F) release and have found that it did not include the Mobile Hotpot application (Verizon version).
Is it possible for someone to take the (apk?) from a stock(ish) rom and upload it so that I can install it onto this rom?
I am paying for the wireless tether service and would simply like to use their application to do so. (I am trying to avoid going back to stock to try to rip the application to put gummy charged back on) - can anyone assist?

Mobile hotspot is built into the framework afaik, and doesn't come in apk form. However, I'm on kejar's rom and I have mobile hotspot available in my apps list.

I can't even explain how it happened, but I reinstalled gummycharged and it was THEN in my apps list. I just came back to update when I found your response.

Why pay for the service? If you are rooted run something like android tether for root. This plus unlimited plan is the best choice in my opinion

I didn't open this thread to turn into "why pay for something you already have". so I won't be answering this question..it has nothing to do with the original question. thank you.

htc evo root and wireless tether

Hi wondering if its possible to root and use wireless tether for the new htc evo. I see they have the hotspot installed but its a monthly fee service. Can I use the wireless tether like I use to on the hero?
Thanks
much like sublimenal above, I'm new to XDA, and I'm jumping in because this is the place to be for the How-to.
Can someone direct me as to where to read up specifically on the the EVO root and tether process? Am I jumping the gun, and there is a walkthrough in development?
Regardless, thank you ahead.
Hey there, actually i just did it yesterday. It was extremly simlple, nothing like rooting the hero and took me about 3 minutes total lol. Here is the process.
1. on your phone go to http://unrevoked.com/m/
2. download the apk file
3. install the apk file and click start
4. you are rooted!
5. go to this url and scan the code with barcode scanner http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...name=wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk&can=2&q=
6. install the tether app
7 run the tether app and your solid!
foserious? Man! THANK YOU!
I'm gonna do this right now!
Yeah I couldn't believe it, the hero took me a few hours to figure out how to root/tether even with the tutorials. This was extremely simple, i guess it works for the hero as well but only if you didn't install the 2.1 update.
man, thank you so much. Everything went awesomely.
Now it's time for me to donate to these code commanders.

Why is everyone's evo working on tether and mine i always have problems. If its that simple i would think mine would work.I got tether running and says limited connectivity on my laptop. Also i downloaded the tether on the market place.Could that be the wrong tether...??
please check your tether log, and post any pertinent info.
Also, does your laptop identify the connection as Ad Hoc? What IP does your laptop get if any? Are you using any features with tether like WEP?
Details plz.
Thank you..................
I want to thank everyone that has helped me figure everything out.Just a few things i need to know.
1. Can sprint find out your using tether?
2. Are there settings i can adjust so no one can use tether but me?That way not anybody can connect to it?
3.When using tether,is it best to turn on 4g or is it okay with 3g running?
4. Can i connect more then one device using tether??
Thank you all...
Step 5
Ok i clicked on the url to scan the code and the page wont load. Any suggestions, or maybe different link? I got a 502 server error.

hi all..please dont be hard on too hard on me for not being a "tech wizard" but I have a couple of questions..I just bought the EVO and I am new to android OS I have always been a windows user so I am pretty clueless on how the android operating system really works my main concern is being able to tether with the EVO with my TP2 I was able to use walking hotspot which now I cant use with android and pda.net which I cant use with my Ipad unless my android device is rooted.can someone post step by step instructions on how to "root" to be able to tether and also if there is a way to "back up" my info just incase something happens.and what to do if I want to restart the phones to the original factory settings just incase I decide to return the device within my 30 day trial..I am hoping all the battery tricks work and I am able to tether with out a problem if not this baby is going back to the store..thanks and I apologize in advance for my ignorance with this topic.I have owned windows mobile devices since it was first introduced so I am clueless to anything else
I'd start by looking in the correct forum or using search.

Sprint monitors data usage, however if you look at your bill the extra $10usd that you are paying gives you unlimited data usage on 3g and 4g. Just be aware that Sprint has reserved the right to throttle down your bandwidth.

Free tethering on my Samsung Epic 4g?

Can it be done free? My phone is rooted, I just want to know if it can be done for free before paying for an app like PDANet or EasyTether. I Saw a project on code.google.com called 'android-wifi-tether' but it wont work on this phone (need a custom kernel). I am behind on android by quite a bit. Is there a better custom rom I should be utilizing on this phone or should I make sprint's stock rom try to work for me?
search on the market for
"wireless tether"
there is a free app called "wireless tether for root"
works great on my magic running cyan ..

[Q] Mobile Access Point?

My previous phone was a Captivate. I know by flashing Paragon you can use the phone as a Mobile Access Point. By doing this I basically made the phone a mobile wifi hub.
Is that a possibility with the Skyrocket?
Is there any way I can implement that now?

You can do it easily with the Stock ROM, Root, and Titanium Backup. All you have to do is "freeze" the Tethering Manager apk and then you can use the Wifi Sharing which is directly built into Gingerbread. Be careful of your carrier's snooping.
assuming you have at&t, you can use various apps to use the phone as WiFi hotspot. Be careful at&t is catching up with many apps and are billing there customers with tethering fee. Alternatively you're phone already has tethering built in. When using a custom ROM like CM7 tethering is hidden from your carrier.
I dont understand why AT&T feels it necessary to retard their phones just to milk their customers.
I understand they are greedy money-hoarding automatons, but really? If you're going to provide a phone service, provide service for the entire capability of the phone don't stop half way. I'd anticipate an official response like Dear Customer, It requires money to run these services. We want paychecks. Fork it over.
I'd love to poke holes in that perspective but truth is that it won't get me anywhere at this point in time.
Anyway - thanks for the heads up.

I'm pretty sure AT&T can and does detect tethering/hotspot usage regardless of which ROM you flashed. Not sure the mechanism they use, but it might be their servers pinging your device and seeing TTLs that are greater than 1, or some other packet inspection.
The root/freeze app method works fine, but it won't prevent carrier detection. Cyanogen's Koushik has an alpha app out that purportedly evades detection, but you have to use it in conjunction with a laptop. So, no standalone hotspot with that one.
I said to hell with it and just froze the tethering manager. My plan is on a business account anyway so AT&T can bite me.

You could. That does seem like a great way to chew through your data plan limits in a hurry, though.
I have an unlimited plan. But really just for setup. I got my dada a new TV and it needs a firmware update but it can only get one thru a wifi connection and my dad does not have internet.

[APP][2.3+][Update 17/09/13][Free/Pro]Free Tethering Unlocker

Free Tethering Unlocker
Unlock your tethering possibilities!
With this simple app you can, finally, use your Mobile Data plan, to surf with your notebook or any device you want, without having to pay any extra to your network operator!
As you can see here, since Android 4.1.2, Google introduced a new tethering function to "mark" tethering packets, so the operator can bill the user for that traffic separately from the traffic generated locally by the phone. May be useful even with Android 2.3+, when tethering problems occurs.
This app makes a simple trick to the routing table, to permit tethering traffic to proceed to the mobile network without any modification :victory:
PLUS, on the premium version, there is an on boot unlock function that will patch the routing table at every reboot, automatically. This way you can forget about the existence of this app and freely enable tethering when you need.
Features:
Automatic interfaces detection
Boot time patching (Premium only)
Wi-Fi and USB tethering mode supported
Tested operators:
The application works properly on all Android devices 2.1 +, but was tested on the following devices:
Vodafone IT
Changelog:
-----1.0.8------
Fixed interface detection bug, multiple interfaces support (LTE Galaxy S4)
New configurations added: T-Mobile
Translations fixed.
Known Issues:
If you use "superuser" on some ROMs you cannot get root privileges. To solve this, download "SuperSU".
Very Important:
In the app menu, there is a link to report your current operator configuration, this way if your actual configuration is not supported (the application wont work) I can see what is happening and can fix the app for your configuration.
This help me a lot, so, please, do it if the app don't work for you. Thanks.
Download:
Download the application from the market here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.kernelxp.freetether
Screenshots :
Remember, if you like this application, rate and review it! Thanks!
Let me know which phone and which operator you use, to complete the compatibility list, thanks.

Thank you sir..
Noob Attack!
Uhm, sir, noob question from a noob person...
Does this app ,of yours, works like those WiFi Tethering apps like Barnacle WiFi / OpenGarden...?
And if it so, how does this differ from those apps?
And if it isn't so, does my phone required to have WiFi Tethering and Hotspot support to use this?
This app only patches original mobile WiFi hotspot (tethering) Android application.
This way you can use what tethering application included in Android distribution, there is no need of external applications like opengarden.
BTW I think, but not assure, that my app will unlock third party tethering application too, so you can use whatever tethering application you want and test if with my patch the tethering starts working.
If you do that, please, report the result here, so I can add compatibility.
Thanks.

Brilliant!
Does it also spoofs my mac address?
Enviado desde mi MB860 usando Tapatalk 2
Android stock mobile WiFi hotspot uses NAT, so...yes, your operator sees only your phone's MAC address.

By the way, can you guys who successfully use this app tell me which is your phone model and your operator, to compile a compatibility list, for all users?
Thanks!
Im using SGH-T999. By the way how do we know if the app is actually working?

This is simple, you have only to unlock tethering with this app, then try to surf with your PC, through the mobile WiFi network created by the phone. If you can see something and you have not paid anything for that....it works.
I suggest to call your operator and ask for disabling the tethering profile. This way (the one I've done) if you can surf the web from your PC, you're sure not to pay. In case the app is not working gor you, and you're using the standard tethering APN (and your operator will charge for that), the connection will be interrupted and you will be not charged for anything.
Let me know, bye!
BTW, today I'll publish an update with new configuration. Stay tuned!

Nexus6, VZW (unlimited plan), does not work. Checks for subscription, then says "Your order could not be processed", and fails.
*Edit:
Developer corrected the issues, this appears to be working on N6 in lastest version!

Worked first time!
PHONE: INFOCUS M512 (Foxconn)
OS: 4.4.2 (root), MIUI
OPERATOR: FIDO/ROGERS (Canada)
4G/LTE
I had NO working tether on this phone since purchase 2 weeks ago (tether was working on retired Apple 3GS - same 1 GB data plan). I probably could have gotten it working on the new Android with a call to FIDO tech support, but I remember when i bought the new SIM card, the sales guy at the mall kiosk warned me that FIDO calculates their tethering data a "little differently" than phone data, and that I might notice higher-than-expected usage totals on my statement...
I think not.

I'm currently working on an update but my job does not leave me much time so...might take a while to be ready, I'm sorry.
Bye and merry Christmas!

Anything new with this app?
Hi!
I'm currently working on a brand new application, with Material Design graphics.
Also the engine is updated, hopefully supporting more unlocking techniques.
Unfortunately my job does not help me in this; I've very small amount of time to write this app, therefore I cannot give you an estimation about when I'll be able to release it. Sorry.
Regards,
Marco.

Hi Marco & thanks for your app.
I've had it on my phone for a while, and it has been working fine, however due to the ever increasing load on my ram & cpu from all the apps & google service updates, I have had to prevent a bunch of system processes & apps from running.
This has stopped your app from working.
Can you please list the system apps/processes that your tether unlocker app needs access to or need to be running so I can enable just the necessary ones thanks?

[TMO][MOD] TMobile Native Tether fix 4.4.2 (AOSP and stock based ROMs)

So, I recently decided to give T-Mobile a try since I think Big Red is becoming more and more evil by the day... To my dismay, I discovered that trying to use the native tether on T-Mobile just redirected me to a "My Account" page. This was thoroughly disheartening. Early attempts at looking into this pointed me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2567579
However, that appears to only apply to 4.4. I installed Gummy rom which is on 4.4.2, and flashing that zip just caused a bootloop (because the framework-res.apk had changed).
Well after further digging, I ended up finding a fix over in the Nexus 5 forums (Specifically, this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47203432&postcount=70)
EDIT: The following worked for me on gummy ROM. So I think this is the fix for AOSP based ROMs. Read further down for the stock based solution discovered by pelebkf
So, long story short, in order to get your native tethering to bypass the T-Mobile redirect page, you want to:
Download SQLite Editor: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor&hl=en
(If you don't want to spend $3, you could transfer the file mentioned below to your computer and do it on an sqlite editor there. The free sqlite editors in the market didn't work for me. This one worked like a charm)
EDIT: This free sqlite editor has been claimed to work fine as well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.htsoft.sqleditor&hl=en
Open the following file in SQLite Editor (or transfer to computer and open there): /data/data/com.android.provider.settings/databases/settings.db
Open the "global" table and add the following entry:
label: tether_dun_required
value: 0
Back out of the app and reboot, and then tethering should be working fine!
Stock based ROM method (give a thanks to pelebkf for figuring this out!)
Go to Settings-> "More..." (under Data Usage) -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
Click the APN "T-Mobile US LTE", scroll down to "APN Type", click that, and add ",dun" to the end of the list (so the list should say "default, mms, supl, hipri, fota, dun") then hit okay. You should be set now!
Just attempted this fix on stock and my hotspot usage is still increasing while using a user agent switcher in chrome.
My nexus 4 however works fine with this fix and the same setup.
Wondering what the difference between the 2 are.

This didn't work for me. I still get redirected, running 4.4.2. TMO OTA. Tried to flash the old framework-res.apk and now phone won't boot, so I'm sitting in recovery. Does anyone have the stock framework-res handy? Any other suggestions on tethering?
I did this on Gummy ROM. I will flash stock at some point and try to take a look for you. Girlfriend is in town visiting so it might not be till after the weekend though.
FYI I am working on trying to get this to work on the stock. Think I may have it. Will post as soon as I find out step by step.

Awesome, thanks! I made the stupid mistake of running the OTA today and needing tether today.... Guess I'll have to live with 56k wifi.
Hey If someone with STOCK 4.4.2 could try this for me.
Edit the main APN "T-Mobile US LTE" and add ",dun" to the end of the "APN type" (so the it should say "default, mms, supl, hipri, fots, dun") then save it.
Then using a User Agent Switcher check and see if you Smartphone Mobile Hotspot Increases or stays the same in data usage.
This seems to have worked for me with NO other modifications.

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll update the OP
Bugger... I was using the hotspot today and listened to a youtube song fine, went to a website fine, then youtube went to autoplay the next song and I got the t-mobile upsell page... Checked some other tabs, they were all getting it now. I applied both hacks in my op (i'm on kangakat at the moment), rebooted, and i'm still getting the upsell page. Says I don't have hotspot or I've used my allotted monthly limit. Haven't had any luck with it yet, but i also haven't really given it any time. Anyone else run into this? I'm on that $30/month prepaid plan.
Well I install Pac Rom and without making any adjustments, hotspot works perfectly. I noticed "dun" was absent from all APNs.
Sent from my Moto X using xda app-developers app
Has anyone found a way to make it work on Kangakat (Stock based rom)? Followed all the steps and does not work. Thanks!!

this no longer works right? Can someone confirm?
I heard tmobile blocked this method now
Try and let us all know! As far as I know it doesn't work!
It's hard for me to test now as I've upgraded my plan to simple choice, where hotspotting is included in the data (e.g. my 3GB plan means i am free to tether as much of my 3GB as I want). Thus, I no longer have a "mobile hotspot usage" in my billing, so I can't actually see what it recorded as having been used.
I am on simple choice unlimited data and it still works based on the T-Mobile app. I am completely stock.

i think thats because the simple choice allows you to tether until you used up your allowed 4G data (then its throttled to 2g) except if you are on the truely unlimited data at 4G speeds they only allow 5GB of tethering.
I have the unlimited 4g data (grandfathered 70/m plan) which allows for 3gb tethering.
According to the t mobile my account app my tethering data is not being used after this mod was done to the the APN.
